Integration of Details of European Classical Architecture II

This book is about connotative aesthetic principles which could be summarized as principle of subtle difference of visual elements and principle of unification of relation elements. The coordination of the visual elements (shape, colour, texture) and the relation elements (volume, image, proportion) is the main constituting element

Integration of Details of European Classical Architecture III

of the spatial design of the city. Principle of subtle difference of visual elements means that when dealing with the unitary architecture among the architectural complex, subtle difference is allowable in shape, colour and texture. Meanwhile, this subtle difference should be controlled within a certain range in order to guarantee the visual identity of the complex.

Contemporary Architecture in China

Claudio Silvestrin Timeless Italian Style Architecture Design Philosophy

Rise of the Orient 2017

Considered to be one of the masters of contemporary minimalism, Silvestrin is admired by international architects and designers, such as Giorgio Armani and Terence Conran. He is known for the serene spaces and simple, essential forms of his architecture and interior design. This book could be the best annotation of his design philosophy of minimalism by showing the works for Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Giada, Anish Kapoor, Victoria Miro, Fondazione Sandretto Re-Rebaudengo, YTL Singapore, illy Coffee, Princi, Rainer Becker of Zuma and internationally acclaimed hip hop artist and producer Kanye West.

The book is a collection of 22 architectural projects in China exhibited as Rise of the Orient, an exhibition held in the Florence Design Week 2017. Critics/architects from the Western world are invited to give comments on each project designed by contemporary Chinese architects. Each project is illustrated with high-resolution images, drawings, sketches, and statements by the architects, presented in a way to best manifest the conception and realisation of the design ideas. Enjoy contemporary architecture in China in an easy way!

I like the strong and austere language of Claudio Silvestrin’s architecture – a complexity behind a simplicity that is so unspectacular, so understated, as to render it spectacular. - Giorgio Armani

Architectural Material & Detail Structure

In our expectations, concrete is always rough and grey. Therefore, how to increase its public acceptance is architects’ great consideration. Many architects have tried actively; some mix concrete and other materials in a proper proportion – clean concrete surface combined with carefully manufactured wood or metal makes it easier to be acceptable. The perfection and abstraction of concrete are also more influential to those who are familiar to contemporary art trend.

The development of architectural materials has lasted for thousands of years. On one hand, we are always looking for materials and expressive techniques of historical and local background; on the other hand, we constantly get impressed by the state-of-the-art technology. Sheet metal is extensively used in architecture, like aluminium sheet, aluminium-plastic panel, colour steel plate, copper plate, stainless steel plate, etc. as there are multiple advantages: it is environment-friendly due to its high recovery percentage; its diversification in colours and forms enables various complex geometry patterns and textures; its weatherability and durability can adapt to most buildings’ requirements. It is also capable of achieving different visual effects: smooth aluminium sheet and stainless steel plate reflect the beauty of modern technology, while copper plate realises the integration of the present and the past.

Architectural Material & Detail Structure

There are four main sections in this book: steel, aluminium, copper and zinc. Each section is further classified by the metal’s specific forms. Through careful analysis, photos, detailed drawings and informative text, it illustrates the characteristics of metal and its application in the detail structure. This book provides a practical reference for the application of metal in architectural design for architects and other readers alike.

In recent years, with the development of science and technology, the variety of brick and stone has been extended and updated continuously, which contributes greatly to the creation of distinct architectural features. The book discusses masonry in two sections addressing brick and stone respectively, and goes further into detailed classification. The projects are elaborately selected and analysed, each presented with photos, drawings and narratives. As a summary of the status quo and future of the application of brick and stone in architecture, the book is intended to provide a comprehensive, new understanding of masonry in the 21st century.

Advanced Materials

Concrete usually gives the impression of being rough, cold and grey. Therefore, how to make it more friendly and acceptable to the public is an important issue in architectural design. Many architects have made positive attempts. For example, the mixed use of concrete and wood or metal will make concrete more accessible. In addition, the perfection and abstraction of concrete will attract those familiar with modern arts as well. The book approaches the use of concrete in architecture from a new perspective. Through presentation and analysis of the latest projects, you will gain a new understanding of this traditional material and get inspirations as well.

Metal

As a typical element of traditional Chinese architecture, wood was extensively used in urban design, building groups and single buildings in the past. Nowadays, modern timber architecture is emerging all over the world. As an environment-friendly, natural and simple material, timber gains popularity in architectural design again. The book introduces different types of wood, each illustrated with specific cases, which are analysed through real-scene photos, detailed drawings and informative text. Through this well-organised book, readers will get a comprehensive understanding about the application of wood in architectural design.

The history of glassmaking can be traced back to 3500BC in Mesopotamia and it is the Romans who first used glass in architecture. With the development of technology, glass has become a common material in contemporary architecture. We have glass ceramics, polished wire glass, groove glass, glass tiles ... With increasingly diversified surface treatments such as enameling, acid embossing, sandblasting and screen printing, there seems to be endless choices for architectural design. The book introduces various glass types and showcases their application with carefully selected projects.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The design team started to study Ninghai’s local culture and custom as soon as the project began, since it is the shop owner’s hometown. There is a

great number of design inspiration generated between communities and cultures, and the design process is full of interesting conflicts between the past and the present. Opening the familiar door, sunshine will surround

you together with dust. The owner grew up with this door when he was not even one meter tall. He is a grown man now, and the door finished its service of frequent opening and closing and stands here silently. There is a

lot of broken glass on the wall at home. They shine brightly in the sunlight

and the owner always thought they were precious stones. He would sneak a few glass pieces into his pockets. The design team used rustic finish as

commonly applied in earlier projects on the facade of the project. As a result of the lack of traditional technique and adding blue vitreous material to

the existing ingredients, the unique design of the facade better reflects the conflicts of past and present.

Cafés and bars are booming throughout cities in China. Renovations or newly built ones, they are often designed to appear international, with modern design approaches usually adopted by designers in the West. Yet elements revealing the Chinese genes can be found, interpreted in contemporary ways to tell the story of rejuvenation of an ancient civilisation in design.

After the reform and opening up, the Chinese people began to have contact with interior design from other countries. Until today Chinese designers are still heavily influenced by the design trends from abroad, yet there are significant changes in the industry in China. As traditional art forms and culture connotation are introduced into interior designs, we witnessed in this book the emergence of projects with Chinese background and strong foreign characteristics, the projects of true originality and innovation, as well as those promoting traditional culture and technological innovation as the same time.

DESIGN CONCEPT As a local fish restaurant brand in Hunan, Rice & Fish has been focusing on the inheritance and innovation of Hunan cuisines. Since it is a locally

based brand, the issue of inheriting regional culture is a focus in spatial

design. Magnificent style and exquisite details coexist in the aesthetic of

Huxiang dwelling culture. This project is based on the wooden elements of

the heritage “mansion” in Yongzhou, Hunan Province. The traditional “line” is employed as conceptual acknowledge to tradition via antique wooden pieces in the space, and then screw-thread steel is deconstructed into the

“mansion” structure with modern approaches. They are the conceptual part of the space and the new “lines’. These two techniques form the hints and

foundation of inheritance and innovation, and the life scene of open dining under the same roof evokes a loving life experience at home.

The “big fish” drifting in the air answers to the brand identity and indicates the rich land of fish and rice. The use of folk art like traditional bamboo weaving in art installations responds to the theme of space and also expresses the desire to promote the beauty of traditional handicraft.

The book selected 27 projects to showcase the latest interior designs of cafés and bars in China. The 17 cafés and 10 bars will lead you to learn about practices of architects and interior designers in China and their design stories.

012

This book shows the higher levels of the interior design of Chinese restaurants and presents advanced design concepts, project analysis and projects demonstration via the five chapters of Innovation of Tradition, Cultural Heritage, Localization of Foreign Cultures, Infinite Creativity and New Application of Technology.

DESIGN CONCEPT The project is formerly Ninghai Noodle Shop in the

013

old Ningbo community. The simple shopfront and the authentic Ninghai flavour make it very popular in the neighbourhood. Its consumer group is mainly families

and office workers in the old community. Based on the

rebranding concept, the design team reintroduced brand identity and interior design. “Zao Fang” was finally

chosen as the shop’s name as it means paying a visit,

only using the character “灶” meaning cooking stove to replace “造”, symbolizing its persistence to traditional food making techniques and to the original flavour.

The word “Zao Fang” means a common courtesy in the Chinese culture. And as the shop’s name it represents

the inheritance and development of traditional cuisines. It is a search for the familiar and friendly tastes.

Since nursery education has been highly valued these days, there is a growing demand for ‘childrencentred’ kindergarten designs. But it is a challenging task for designers to create a kindergarten that can meet conventional needs and benefit children’s physical and mental development as it requires not only excellent professional skills but a thorough understanding of educational venue. Knowledge of children’s psychology is sometimes necessary. It places the designers of a kindergarten in face of many unexpected problems during the process. This book addresses the problems designers often encounter in kindergarten design in terms of space planning, activity zone design, material selection, furniture design and colour design. Over 20 international designers are invited to share their experience and provide solution by project statement and QA. A number of successful kindergarten designs are also included, to help the readers find their inspiration and reference.

Successful Bakery Design II

New Chinese-style Design

A collection of 21 interior design projects, categorised into four parts: - The Meaning of Literature - The Beauty of Painting - The Fineness of Craft - The Thinking of Philosophy

Owning a bakery of comfortable and welcoming interior that gives off wonderful smell of bread and cakes every now and then is the dream for a lot of people. To provide customers with a pleasant experience for the eye and the mouth, each space must be equally functional while they retain their own features. The book introduces the essence of bakery design from the perspective of brand identity, colour scheme, lighting design, choice of materials and spatial layout, presenting the design concept in a fuller scale and on a deeper level. You can also find tips on site selection, essential equipment and budget planning in the appendix.

All of these projects are selected as they are deemed to be the best representation of ‘Modern Orientalism’, a style in interior design that is believed to have both a traditional Chinese flavour and modern design characteristics; a contemporary interpretation of the traditions based on requirements of modern men. The interpretation is not realised by simply using typical Chinese elements in the design; rather, the deeper soul behind the Chinese civilisation is explored; literature, painting, craft, and philosophy are all covered. Through the book, you will have a comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture and its application in contemporary interior design. Both outside and inside the steel is used as a search for the material forward aseptic feeling.

The owners required five separate purpose-built fridges to fit within the shop’s footprint. Inspired by cafes in Japan (which the owners adore!) where creative use of small spaces permeates through the design, a clever layout ensures that all kitchen equipments were well located for staff to work comfortably. The result is also more-than-generous amount of storage throughout. The minimalistic approach continues with a simple material palette, coupling with straight geometries to achieve a regulated sense of order.

Inside, it seeks to turn the space into a warm atmosphere, where people feel cosy and also look for items that evoke the tradition at the bakery, which is why the interior is lined with natural wood of spruce and some detail in decorative ceramic tiles. The property has a kitchen and toilets of hiding in the back where the finishes are more conventional and industrial. Lighting Design

Despite the small footprint, the floor spaces have designated front and back-of-house areas where tarts are made in-house. However, with no space to conceal kitchen activities, food preparation work becomes theatre. To minimise clutter, storage joinery was selectively designed to squeeze every last inch of useable space. Built-out veneered walls, overhead cupboards and counters all conceal access to services and storage.

Lighting also seeks a careful design. “We have sought shelter metaphorically evokes a large mass and this we have done with molds of the same material that mimic those of a loaf of bread; in the work area, these molds are an organic element where the ‘mass’ seems to fall to the ground. We have also opted for signage lighting and concealed lighting to enhance the wood panelling and lighting in all the cases.”

Through large curved movements of white concrete, clear figures of the ‘plissée’ take shape, between which the spaces of the boutique slide in. The nobility of the smooth and delicate surfaces is given by a contemporary material made of ultra high-density concrete and by marble powder. The project also respects its “commercial” nature. The building does not want to appear as an institution or a museum; and its generous shop windows open to the immediate public place. The drawing is influenced by the

suggestive inspirations of Miami, images of sun and beaches along with an idea of dynamism, youth, and contemporary design. Architecture and Haute Couture unite in the common desire to seduce. Distinctive architect Claudio Silvestrin, designer of the Giada Milan store in Montenapoleone, has created a contemporary and timeless architecture, where ancient and modern embrace one another in a calm and elegant space, giving a luxurious feel and full expression to the Giada collection. The 250m2 Giada flagship store in Beijing is facing the prestigious Jinbao Street, with entrances from the street as well as the Jinbao Place shopping mall. Comprised of truly natural materials and elements: lifegiving water, stone walls and floors, cast bronze and natural leather, full height doors and mirrors-all united in harmony through a linear and decisive geometry, rich in sophisticated details. A travertine water trough runs along the entrance wall. Blocks of cast bronze provide pedestals for the products, vitrines and a screen for the cash desk. The rough surface of raw limestone totems create a textural backdrop to the soft clothes, which are hung on square frame rails with a bronze finish. The design of the store's

exterior is revolutionary: an enormous façade made of yellowish porphyry stone, 15 meters wide and 9 meters tall, with a singular, smooth, bronze finish door adjacent to an equally proportionate clear glass window looking into the boutique itself. The façade is instantly striking. It is characterised by huge, illuminated cracks breaking the surface of the seemingly indestructible stone. The idea behind this appearance is a poetic metaphor representing the rising energy and fire of a dragon. In the architect Claudio Silvestrin's own words: ‘A young dragon dwells underground Unknown He dreams of seeing the sky He pushes upwards In rising, the earth's surface begins to crumble Through the cracks Light emerges’ Designer: Claudio Silvestrin Area: 250m2

A shopfront sets the tone of the design of the brands. It shows the core values of the business. As the market is becoming more and more competitive, each brand strives to build up its unique image to create a distinctive soul – the DNA that cannot be replicated. The shopfront is a manifestation of the DNA in a nut shell. It is the biggest ‘business card’ to give away for free. It offers a glimpse of the merchandise inside. It is a teaser – customers are hypnotized as soon as they see the shopfront and become immediately tempted to go inside the store. It is the magic spell that calls for people’s attention. As a result, façade design is essential to the brand building process.

A must-read for architects, shopfront designers, sign designers, concerned citizens, and anyone who cares about the first impressions of shops, this well-illustrated book is equally appealing to shop owners.

The entirely transparent façade of a high-end flagship store on Amsterdam’s upmarket shopping street, PC Hooftstraat, uses glass bricks, glass windows frames and glass architraves in a way to evoke the vernacular of the area with the goal to maintain the character of the site. The 620 m2 of retail and 220 m2 of housing, were designed for investor Warenar. The design unites the ambition of Amsterdam to have large distinctive flagship stores without compromising the historical ensemble. MVRDV’s Crystal Houses began its existence with the request of Warenar to design a flagship store combining both Dutch heritage and international architecture on the PC Hooftstraat, Amsterdam’s one and only luxury brand street

The book shows you how to design great shopfronts, from planning to design principles according to type of shop, location, product, and architectural elements. This delightful book features latest shopfronts from over 140 different shops in urban contexts, revealing changing trends and distinct characters of different brands. Each shopfront not only shows the unique face, but contains a host of interesting details about the designs, materials and construction methods. With numerous photos and drawings, it has eight major parts, including introduction, parts of a shopfront, planning for shopfront design, renovation of traditional shopfront, new shopfront design principles, design approach of architectural elements, security, and works.

that was previously primarily residential. MVRDV wanted to make a representation of the original buildings and found a solution through an extensive use of glass. The near full-glass façade mimics the original design, down to the layering of the bricks and the details of the window frames, but is stretched vertically to comply with updated zoning laws and to allow for an increase in interior space. Glass bricks stretch up the façade of Crystal Houses, eventually dissolving into a traditional terracotta brick façade for the apartments (as stipulated in the City’s aesthetics rules), which appears to be floating above the shop floor. This project is a complete renovation for Tiffany's jewellery store located in Chongqing, China. A full architectural intervention included a storefront design and interiors creating an environment connecting the brand's rich history and identity with today's customers in Asia. The goal was to combine nature, which has always been a constant design theme for Tiffany, with modern architecture to create an uplifting experience within the three-story space. The illuminated site specific sculpture of falling leaves made of Tiffany blue and iridescent metals by Japanese

artist Nami Sawada is viewable from the outside and spans the full length of the entrance, introducing the free-flowing state of the design before one even enters the store. The classic elements of Tiffany & Co. flagship store on the fifth avenue are employed in this project while its typical symbolic patterns are found on the decorations: the façade has a stereoscopically engraved effect; where the pearly gloss is reflected on the metal exterior, resembling the white ribbon on the famous Tiffany Blue Box®; the frame of the fine steel store entrance is decorated with grain pattern representing nature.

Nature in Luxe

Residence in Luxe

The interior works introduced in the book express people’s state of mind of returning to nature and the wish of being close to nature via the way of living. As for the interpretation on the design thinking of natural style, cases in this book are diversified, not only advocating natural materials such as wood, vine and granite, but also focusing on natural lighting, ventilation, energy saving, usage of natural colours and closing to nature. What’s more, interior furnishings and decorations which have a wild smell are applied, at the same time, sceneries which have strong oriental cultural flavour are brought into houses, as well as the virescence and artificial landscape. Moreover, wonderful cases in tiny luxurious style are also included in this book, excluding the concept of ‘Slight Luxury’ through elegant pictures and presenting a happy and unique family wholly from hard to soft decoration, which offers a tiny luxurious feast of interior art for the readers.

Bars with Specific Themes

Coffee Shop with Specifc Themes

In recent years, most bars’ successes attribute to their distinct themes or unique interior designs. Today, the bar’s interior design tends to individuation and diversification, which is directly related to creation intentions of the designer and the owner. A bar’s theme could be anything or any events, even a fleeting idea. Therefore, a bar’s theme tends to be diversified and abstract which runs through every aspect of its interior design. This book will illustrate bar design in four chapters: theme design, layout design, the use of materials and lighting design. Each chapter starts with some must-know design points and then some experienced designers will share their experience with design cases. At last, some featured bar design cases within recent three years will be illustrated. The common features of our selected cases are promoted and highlighted: consideration of details, emphasis on experience and sustainability, understanding of owner’s demands and appropriate expression of space.

With the continuous economic development and faster pace of life, people are facing more and more life pressures. In the busy and bustle life, we need a place to release emotions and look for friendship. A coffee shop which blends Chinese and Western cultures will be an ideal place. A successful coffee shop design must have its own theme. On the basis of this theme, the space can be well arranged to meet functional and aesthetic requirements, thus providing a pleasant experience for users. The book starts from ‘theme’ and illustrates each case to analyse the expression of different themes in coffee shops. It shows how the designers achieve their original design goals through extraction and application of conceptual elements and development of creative ideas.

From Me to We The Changing Workplace

This is a surprising book which presents us the changing trend of workplace with the emergence of ‘big data’. This may bring us more imaginations: in the future, should employers trace their employees’ movement in work places? Can the colour of an interior wall change the way that we think and perceive? Even will you need an actual office then? The answers may be varied, but we are sure that the design of workplace is changing in the role of enhancing working efficiency. The book unfolds in accordance to this idea. We have to admit that with the development of ‘big data’, workplaces are changing from a spatial order of ‘me’ to that of ‘we’. Changes are constant and evolve with social developments. We hope the book will trigger readers’ deep thoughts.

Though great differences exist between elderly residential systems in Eastern and Western societies, architects and designers all over the world should always pay attention to the mental health of the elderly residents, and safety and comfortability of their living environment. The book covers the most typical aging societies such as Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, USA and Japan, where the latest notable projects are selected, including nursing homes, senior apartments, elderly communities and high-end elderly residences. Featuring different styles and innovations, and particularly an analysis of the demands and trends of elderly residential projects in China, the book offers a reference kit for all designers from different backgrounds.

Elements of Neo-Classical Style

The elements of Neo-classical style are the elements that reflect Neo-classicism in modern living space. It could be as big as a solid Roman column, and as small as a beautifully carved artefact. These decorative substances can evoke imagination, cast visual impact, and reach the very inner part of the audience. They are not necessarily ‘vintage’, but they do convey the preciseness, solemnity, and luxury of Neo-classicism. Neoclassical elements present strict geometric patterns and are more or less hand carved, bringing the ambiance of solemn elegance and the ‘human’ factor into the interior. Therefore, Neo-classical style is given more consideration in today’s interior decorating industry.

Jungle the Concrete 2

Vertical greening and roof gardening is an important element of sustainable urban planning, and also a significant aspect in the construction of an ‘eco-friendly China’. It is an important means to alleviate the urban heat island effect and deal with heavy storms. This book aims to review developments of eco-cities in China in recent years. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 introduces basic knowledge and technical know-how about vertical greening, including a general introduction and suggestions about site analysis, planning and design, green wall and roof construction techniques and maintenance. Part 2 is a collection of 31 projects, showing the latest achievements in vertical greening and roof gardens in China. All these projects are selected carefully and presented with photos, drawings and narratives to demonstrate the design process, conception, and installation/realisation in a professional way. It will be helpful to vertical greening practitioners around the world to learn from experiences and lessons in China.

Five years ago, the Green Wall concept was only talked between specialists and the clients had no patience to listen to our presentation. Now architects would be upset without including a piece of green wall. After four years’ waiting, we are happy to present you a new version of Living Wall: Jungle the Concrete. In this book, the collection of recent projects is updated accordingly and the technical drawings and data are up-to-date. Most projects are featured with detailed plant list which are very valuable information for the readers. New concept and new technologies in the green wall are introduced. Nature is not to be outdone, cultivating her own vegetable and mineral anomalies, with or without the help of humans.

As the world is undergoing rapid urbanisation and the demands for good housing in cities soar, we are looking for residential environment where we can take refuge from the intense and hectic lifestyle. This enticing book is a window to a diverse range of community landscape design creating exceptional living environment across the globe addressing this need of high-quality housing.

In the domain of the garden, in the widest sense of the term, singularity obviously goes beyond the aesthetics and the classic tendencies of landscape design, such as they have been defined across the centuries. Garden creators are personalities in their own right. Whether multi-media artists, landscapers, architects, musicians, designers or simply the guy next door, they have in common the willingness to cross agreed-upon rules and ideas.

The stimulating book is divided into three sections – high-rise residential tower landscape, midrise residential block landscape and low-rise villa landscape as each category has its unique landscape character. The beautifully articulated projects in the book demonstrate how landscape architects integrate some key parameters like culture, context, sustainability and budget in their projects. It is hoped that the book can be enlightening and instructive to both landscape designers and learners.

Ogres & Giants

A book with Augmented Reality which allows you to enjoy the 3D images, games, music and many more surprises behind each page. The little prince lives on a little asteroid, B612, which he shares with a vain flower and three volcanoes. From there he sets off on a voyage among the planets and ‘falls’ to Earth, where he strikes up a close friendship with an aviator. The little prince discovers that separated from the things that gave meaning to his daily life, that needed his care and provided his well-being, he feels more alone than ever. His conversations with the king who has no subjects, with the drunkard who drinks to escape the embarrassment of being a drunkard, etc., show the little prince that it is not worth living in isolation; it is ridiculous and useless. Later, his chats with the fox teach him that whoever forms a relationship is forever responsible for what he has created. Thus, having learned this lesson, and feeling overwhelmed by melancholy, the little prince decides to return home and he leaves us the possibility of sensing his presence each night in the starry sky.

A book with Augmented Reality which allows you to enjoy the 3D images, games, music and many more surprises behind each page.

Geology is a deeply attractive science as it encompasses the fundamental issues of our planet: its origin, its formation, life in the past and current evolutionary processes, in which we human beings are actively involved.

From its foundation in Rome, in the 8th Century BCE, until its fall, in the 5th Century CE, one of the humanity’s most extraordinary and influential civilisations developed: the Roman civilisation. A culture that stood out not only for the innovation of its political institutions and the extent of its great feats of engineering but also for its capacity to spread its language, its law and its art to all corners of its empire.

The observation and study of the heavens have fascinated every civilisation; some even believed that our planet was the centre of the universe. Today, we know that Earth is just a tiny point in our immense universe.

More than five thousand years ago, in a large region shaped by the Nile, one of the longest rivers in the world, one of the most remarkable and long-lasting civilisations in human history developed: Egyptian civilisation. It was a culture that was outstanding not only for its impressive artistic and architectural works, but also for its wisdom and scientific knowledge.

A book with Augmented Reality which allows you to enjoy the 3D images, games, music and many more surprises behind each page.

All the stories we read, even those that might seem unreal and full of fantasy, have a deeper meaning to be discovered. In them we can discover better ways of living by valuing others or enhancing our own way of being. Here you will find stories from authors such as Rudyard Kipling, the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen, Félix María Samaniego, Oscar Wilde and Jacint Verdaguer, as well as those from popular traditions in the United States, China, Russia, Greece, India, Poland, and elsewhere. Each story highlights a fundamental value that will be easy to identify and understand. Twenty-six wonderful tales teach values such as Honesty (‘George Washington and the Cherry Tree’); Friendship (‘The Musicians of Bremen’); Loyalty (‘The Little Lead Soldier’); Initiative (‘Puss in Boots’); and Generosity (‘The Happy Prince’).

Braving these stories you will sail undiscovered seas, dive to the depths of the ocean and traverse wonderful and remote territories. You will come face-to-face with gorillas, toast your flagon with Vikings and marvel at the extraordinary treasures of Asia. Our fifteen adventurers (Jacques Cartier, Marco Polo, Roald Amundsen, Christopher Columbus, Jacques Cousteau, David Livingston, Francis Drake, Mary Kingsley, Alexander Humboldt, Ibn Battuta, James Cook, Erik the Red, Vasco da Gama, Amelia Earhart and Dian Fossey), will inspire you to do some exploration of your own!
