Agriculture Bagasse Properties, Production and Uses (Agriculture Issues and Policies Series) Edited by Antone Farr Sugarcane bagasse is considered a by-product of the sugar-alcohol industries. However, in the last few decades, this biomass has been used mainly for energy generation. Considering the widespread uses of sugarcane bagasse, the authors begin with a focus on detailed information about the main producers of sugarcane and world availability for its plantation. Different approaches for extracting the cellulosic and hemicellulosic fractions are also described. Next, the impact of certain production variables on the yield and surface area of sugarcane bagasse derived activated carbon are investigated. The physicochemical properties of the produced activated carbon including pH, moisture content, fixed carbon, volatile matter and ash content are also investigated. Efforts aiming at the utilization of lignocellulosic materials as alternative sources of chemicals and energy have been increasing due to the concern about growth of CO2 emissions. As such, the authors discuss recent advances in biotechnology and the development of the biorefinery concept which have expanded the possibilities of bagasse application. The authors go on to discuss the advances made so far for the biotechnological conversion of bagasse to biofuels and useful chemicals in order to determine which further efforts are yet required to establish the fermentation of sugars derived from bagasse on an industrial scale. Bagasse fiber is composed of comparable amount of lignocellulosic cell materials, therefore it has a high potential to be utilized a promising economic and ecobenign alternative to gasoline. Current proposals for the diversification of traditional uses of bagasse and lignocellulosic biorefineries are analyzed, with emphasis on sustainable biofuels, organic fertilizers, human food and livestock, from the point of view of production and marketing. Necessary strategies for their management that allow for sustainable use as feedstock are also discussed. Lastly, the authors study the gasification of sugarcane bagasse through the theoretical description of the process, analysis of environmental impacts and computational simulation of the gasification of bagasse and straw using a nonstoichiometric chemical equilibrium model. Architecture A Stage for the King The Travels of Christian IV of Denmark and the Building of Frederiksborg Castle Patrick Kragelund Along with Hamlet’s Kronborg at Elsinore, Frederiksborg is the most magnificent early seventeenth-century residence in Northern Europe, visited by thousands of people from all over the world each year. Its splendid setting on three interconnected islands and the richness of its sculptural decoration is unparalleled. However, much of the structure and interior was devastated in a fire in 1859 and the large-scale damages necessitated substantial reconstruction. While the reconstruction is reasonably faithful to the original architecture, it was exceedingly lax when it came to the more than sixty freestanding sculptures that originally adorned the castle’s courtyards, galleries, arches and facades. This volume recreates an idea of how Frederiksborg presented itself to its visitors in the days of Christian IV. The book further unravels the profound inspiration Christian IV drew from his sojourns to Berlin, Dresden and, especially, to England, where in the summer of 1606 he visited his brother-in-law James I at Theobalds House. This visit provided inspiration that, even while construction of his residence in Denmark was in progress, would dramatically change the overall layout and facades of Frederiksborg, thereby turning the castle into the marvel that it remains to this day. In this pioneering study, featuring more than a hundred photos and illustrations, Patrick Kragelund etches out a new and important historical and architectural dimension to this magnificent monument.

About the Author: Patrick Kragelund holds doctorates in Classics from the University of Copenhagen and was director of the Danish National Art Library since 1998 until his retirement in 2016. He has published widely on Roman history, literature, drama, and epigraphy, as well as on the reception of the classics in post-Renaissance art. Nijmegen Designing the ‘City Bridge’ (English/Dutch Edition) Laurent Ney Text in English & Dutch. Nijmegen: Designing the 'City Bridge' is the personal account of Laurent Ney, the engineer of the duo Ney-Poulissen who was asked to design the new city bridge in Nijmegen. And that was a challenge, because Nijmegen already had a face-setting bridge, the Waal Bridge, which was declared a national monument with its imposing arch construction.Laurent Ney gives the reader a look in his head and his sketchbooks. We follow him in a fascinating process in which building knowledge, both historical, cultural, local and international, is combined with a clear vision of landscape and urbanity. The municipality of Nijmegen is working on a 'city bridge', but what that exactly means is the central question during the design process. Gradually, many decisions and considerations come to an end and if it turns out that a steel bridge is far too expensive, almost everything starts all over again. The result may be: a single arch bridge, the longest in Europe. Using original documents, such as the assignment formulation, design sketches, environmental explorations, sources of inspiration, models and photographs, Laurent Ney gives a fascinating insight into a complex design process.

About the Author: Laurent Ney (France, 1964) is a civil engineer trained in Belgium and Germany. He set up his own office in Brussels and Luxembourg in 1992 (www.ney.be). In collaboration with Chris Poulissen he designed the integral bridge 'De Oversteek'. In the Netherlands Ney is best known for the spectacular canopy of the courtyard of the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam. PB 9789460041747 £24.99 December 2014 Vantilt Publishers 200 pages

The Dutch Urban Block and the Public Realm Models, rules, ideals Susanne Komossa, Roger Willems In The Dutch urban block and the public realm, Susanne Komossa uses typomorphological research to analyse the development of the Dutch urban block as an architectural model over the past four hundred years. The urban block is the link between city dwellers’ everyday lives and the urban public realm. This clearly written and amply documented study calls for the small-scale urban economy and the public realm to be treated as essential components of the city when new urban plans and models are developed.

About the Author: Susanne Komossa is an associate professor of architectural design at the Department of Architecture / Public Buildings: composition and tectonics at the Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft. PB 9789460040559 £42.99 October 2010 Vantilt Publishers 224 pages

The State Of The Delta Engineering, Urban Development and Nation Building in the Netherlands Han Meyer All over the planet, urban growth is taking place in delta and coastal areas. To what extent can the Dutch experience serve as a model for other urbanised delta areas? Since the eleventh century, an inaccessible marshy delta in the lower reaches of the River Rhine and the River Maas has developed into one of the most urbanised parts of Europe. Dykes, dams, canals and pumps have protected and united, but also divided, the Dutch people – right up to the present day. In the Netherlands, there is an inextricable link between hydraulic engineering, urban design and nation building. The state of the delta examines how this relationship has emerged and succeeded, and is currently changing. A key contribution was made during the twentieth century by major hydraulic engineering and urban planning projects that permanently changed the face of the Netherlands. Meyer moves on from there to consider how things may yet develop in the future. Not only does the Dutch government no longer have a monopoly on national spatial planning, but climate change and the growing concentration of people and capital in the west of the country are making a drastic overhaul of its flood protection system and of the urban planning approach unavoidable.Simply transplanting the new Dutch approach to other urbanised delta areas will not work – yet lessons of relevance to them can certainly be learned from it.

About the Author: Han Meyer is Professor of Urban Development at Delft University of Technology. His attention is focused on Delta construction. With this theme he examines the changing coherence between the landscape conditions of the delta, urban design, civil engineering and social context. He is the author and co-author of various publications in this field. HB 9789460043345 £26.99 January 2017 Vantilt Publishers 240 pages

The Process of Enterprise Risk Management (Management Science - Theory and Applications/Business Issues, Competition and Entrepreneurship) Kok-Boon Oh, Bruce Ho, Pham Le Thu Nga, Huang Yejing, Jianmei Wang This book provides an introduction to enterprise risk management. It presents a holistic view of the fundamentals right at the start that will aid the reader in understanding the concepts of risk and why they need to be analyzed to more advanced topics of strategic risk management. The author does this by adopting a widely accepted risk framework that uses financial risk as a common thread weaving through the entire enterprise risk management process to illustrate its workings. Therefore, the aim of this book is three-fold: First, it discusses the concept in a generic analytical framework of managerial decision-making. As the basic principles of risk management have been intermeshed with the generally accepted enterprise risk management framework, this implicitly warrants the discussion of the corporate environments in which risks exist, namely, the operational and financial systems. The second objective is to detail the enterprise risk management process in the context of a firm with a focus on financial risk exposure. Third, the risk management strategies are discussed; their relevance, methods and application are presented. This book also provides a framework for analyzing key financial risks and a guide for implementing risk controls in an enterprise risk management context. Embedded Systems Design Edited by Michael Schmidt, Jongdae Kim Embedded systems and real time operating systems (RTOS) are fast achieving ubiquity, blurring the lines between science fiction and hard reality. Computer systems that are embedded in a variety of devices and play a significant role of specific control functions have permeated different scenes of industry. Therefore, we can hardly discuss our life or society from now onwards without referring to embedded systems. Nowadays, different advances in technology have reduced the cost of micro-controllers and devices, such as sensors and actuators. In addition, the proliferation of Internet connections has led to the appearance of digital system controllers that are designed to monitor and control equipment distributed by remote human intervention. Embedded systems and Real Time Operating systems are two among the several technologies that will play a major role in making these concepts possible. A large number of people are already depending on operating systems for real time applications, these 'eyes in the sky' are now going to make an impact on our everyday lives in a more considerable manner. Embedded Systems Design is intended to describe research or technical aspects in the area of real-time and embedded systems. It aims at the evaluating of the maturity and design and control of embedded and real-time systems, and ubiquitous computing technology and the investigation of the trends and innovations in the field. For a broad range of embedded systems to continue their growth, a number of high-quality fundamental and applied researches are indispensable. It deals with the use of software engineering techniques in the design of embedded systems. It aims to propose a strategy for the development of embedded systems, that incorporate aspects of computing interest as an abstraction of the behavior and component-based design which allows embedded systems to have a number of features. Various technologies presented in this book will be helpful to researchers and engineers around the world. HB 9781642230185 ÂŁ180.00 January 2019 Scitus Academics 377 pages

Earth Sciences Archipelagos Types, Characteristics and Conservation (Earth Sciences in the 21st Century Series) Edited by Mabel Perez, Juana Mills The book begins by examining the Canary Islands and their characteristic orography and regime of winds that affect this archipelago. Investigations were carried out by the authors which allowed for the characterization of the atmospheric corrosion for metals of wide industrial use. Due to its geographical location, the Azores archipelago is one of the perfect places to observe and study the characteristics of atmospheric processes. The remote conditions of the islands allow for the monitoring of greenhouse gases without the influence of local sources of pollution. Consequences of climate change are also discussed. The closing chapter discusses a new paradigm in the sol-gel synthesis, particularly in the synthesis of bioactive glass. In this new approach, the deionized water is replaced by highly ionized and naturally acidified thermal water collected from springs located in Furnas Volcano. Given the potential impact of these waters on the structure and bioactivity of sol-gel bioactive glass, special emphasis is given to their genesis, physicochemical properties and ionic diversity. Education Knowledge or Praxis? An Attributional Perspective in Multicultural Teacher Education (Education in a Competitive and Globalizing World Series) Yan Yang Globalization and changing demographics in the United States have resulted in a need for higher education to prepare teachers for an increasingly diverse society. To this end, teacher preparation programs in colleges and universities have included a curriculum with required multicultural education courses. Although the important role of causal attribution theory has been well-documented in a wide range of disciplines, its role in multicultural teacher education remains a mystery. In this book, the author first reviews two overarching theoretical frameworks, namely, causal attribution theory and aspects of multicultural education. Second, in an attempt to bridge the gap between causal attribution and multicultural teacher education, the author conducted a study exploring the relationship between causal attribution of cultural awareness and cultural competence among preservice teachers. Participants included 793 preservice teachers from two large public universities who reported their causal attributions of cultural awareness and their cultural competence. Canonical correlation analysis results showed two significant relationships between causal attribution and cultural competence. Personal control over the causes of cultural awareness was found to be positively related to praxis, i.e., behavioral outcome; whereas attributions to internal and stable causes were positively associated with knowledge as major components of cultural competence. The findings indicate the importance of addressing causal attribution and moving beyond negative emotions in improving preservice teachers’ cultural competence in multicultural education. Third, the author discussed the theoretical and pedagogical implications of the study results. Limitations of the study and future directions are also discussed. Engineering Advances in Engineering Research Volume 25 (Advances in Engineering Research Series) Edited by Victoria M. Petrova Advances in Engineering Research. Volume 25 examines the background of magnetic sensors within the field of traffic engineering. Starting off with an introduction to the principles of traffic detection and estimation, the authors study the design and development of a low cost, energy efficient multi-function wireless traffic earth magnetic sensors (EMS). Recommended sensor layout strategies are presented in an effort to reduce the investment cost and provide a decision-making basis for traffic management. Next, the authors present the main advantages of the vortex and highly turbulent flows and their implementation area in the chemical engineering. The technological scheme includes devices with active hydrodynamic regimes used in the granulation processes. The theoretical bases for the technological line of the devices with active hydrodynamic regimes is also presented. Piezoelectric materials were discovered many years ago, however, new compounds and fabrication techniques are continually explored in order to get the optimal and new properties. The authors discuss a new piezoelectric ceramic with Platinum implant that has been fabricated in recent years. The application possibilities of this ceramic are increased since there is a third electrode available which can be used to control its behavior. The analysis of the behaviour of Passive Magnetic Bearing (PMB) in order to achieve an acceptable magnetic force and stiffness is proposed as an interesting topic for rotating systems. In this compilation, numerical analysis, which is an effective method to investigate the structural parameters of PMB, is applied using Finite Element Method to the twodimensional model of PMB. The closing paper presents a universal solution for the magnetic force interaction calculation between arbitrarily magnetized permanent ring magnets. The configuration contains two permanent ring magnets that correspond to the axial or radial passive magnetic bearing configuration, and the type of the bearing depends on the permanent magnet’s magnetization vector direction and the permanent magnet’s position. Digital Integrated Circuit Design Edited by Mohammed Darmi, Yanfeng Jiang Integrated circuits (ICs) are a keystone of modern electronics. They are the heart and brains of most circuits, encompassing the particular logic and circuit design techniques required to design integrated circuits, or ICs. ICs consist of miniaturized electronic components built into an electrical network on a monolithic semiconductor substrate by photolithography. Today, due to the continuous miniaturization of electronic components, a single integrated circuit (IC) contains many transistors and interconnections very close each other, and this causes an increased number of unwanted interactions. In a mixed-signal System-on-Chip (SoC) (ie: when analog and digital circuits are integrated on the same silicon chip) performance limitations come mainly from the analog section which interfaces the digital processing core with the external world. In such ICs, the digital switching activity may affect the analog section. A method to isolate the individual components formed in the substrate is necessary since the substrate silicon is conductive and often forms an active region of the individual components. With the progress of science and technology, communication products play an increasingly important role in the development of countries and improvement of daily life, and the integrated circuits are the core components of communication products. At present, the scale of integrated circuits enlarges gradually, functional integrations extend, and the requirement of reliability also improves. This book is aimed to cover trends and developments in the design and application of analog, radio frequency, and mixed signal integrated circuits as well as signal processing circuits and systems. It features both new research results and reviews and reflects the large volume of cutting-edge research activity in this field today. This book intends to mainly introduce the failure analysis technology and process of integrated circuits applied in the communication products. This book also introduces the specific process of failure analysis, and the process can reflect the application of concrete failure analysis method. The integrated circuit failure analysis depends on the accurate confirmation and analysis of chip failure mode, the search of the root failure cause, the summary of failure mechanism and the implement of the improvement measures. Electronic Circuit Analysis Edited by Feim Ridvan Rasim, Michal Tadeusiewicz Fault diagnosis of electronic circuits has been one of the most challenging topics for researchers and test engineers. Given the circuit topology and nominal circuit parameter values, fault diagnosis is to obtain the exact information about the faulty circuit based on the analysis of the limited measured circuit responses. Fault diagnosis of electronic circuits is essential for analog and mixed-signal systems testing and maintenance both during the design process and the manufacturing process of VLSI ASICs. With recent sharp development of electronic design automation tools and widespread application of analog VLSI chips and mixed-signal systems in the area of wireless communication, networking, neural network and real-time control, the interests in analog test and fault diagnosis revives. System-on-chip solutions favored by modern electronics pose new challenges in this topic such as increased complexity and reduced die size and accessibility. As discussed earlier, the conventional method for multiple fault diagnosis can be divided into three steps: fault detection, fault location determination, and finding the faulty elements values. This conventional method is readily deemed to be a numerical method by its very own nature but it is presented here as it provides basic insight to the problem and the limitations facing all numerical methods. While process engineers have traditionally coped with die-to-die fluctuations, the today within-die variations are more subtle since they imply that different areas of the same die exhibit different values of the various parameters. Electronic Circuit Analysis provides state of the art complete coverage of electrical circuits and to the field of energy conversion technologies, analysis and design. A number of methods of analyzing power electronic circuits are discussed and illustrated. HB 9781642230161 £160.00 January 2019 Scitus Academics 299 pages

Electronic Devices And Circuits Edited by Bo Li, T K Subramanyam The device which controls the flow of electrons is called electronic device. These devices are the main building blocks of electronic circuits. Engineers design and test circuits that use the electromagnetic properties of electrical components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes and transistors to achieve a particular functionality. The tuner circuit, which allows the user of a radio to filter out all but a single station, is just one example of such a circuit. Integrated circuits and other electrical components can then be assembled on printed circuit boards to form more complicated circuits. Today, printed circuit boards are found in most electronic devices including televisions, computers and audio players. This book entitled Electronic Devices And Circuits contains a collection of latest research developments on the printed electronics from the material-related various processes to the interdisciplinary device applications by a selected group of authors including promising novices to experts in the field. The intent of this book is to provide readers the backgrounds and trends of the electronics devices, including processes, and specific areas of applications. Currently, the research on the electronics devices is confronted with many issues including material and printing process issues. In addition, for the specific applications with low‐cost and high‐volume manufacturing, the solutions for the issues may be different depending on the applications. Therefore, this book can allow readers to provide the fundamentals of the printed electronics in process or device levels as well as the circuit level implementation scheme for applications. Furthermore, this book can provide a clue for the readers on how to solve their current issues for their specific applications. In telecommunication, entertainment devices, computational techniques, clean energy harvesting, medical instrumentation, materials and device characterization and scores of other areas of R&D the science of electronics get coupled by fine technology advances to make incredibly large strides. Heusler Alloys Structure, Properties and Applications (Materials Science and Technologies Series) Edited by Julia Coleman Ternary Mn-based Heusler alloys often exhibit a ferromagnetic shape memory effect, which is best studied in Ni2MnGa, a prototype of Heusler alloys. Heusler Alloys: Structure, Properties and Applications opens by analyzing how by substituting nickel for iron, another Heusler alloy emerges, Fe2MnGa, with much richer structural and magnetic properties than Ni2MnGa and a large ferromagnetic shape memory performance in slightly off-stoichiometric compositions.Next, the effects of atomic site disorder on the transport, magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical properties and electronic structures of metallic Cu2MnAl, Ni2MnGa and Ni2MnIn and half-metallic Co2CrAl, Co2MnGa and Co2CrGa Heusler alloy films are been investigated and the findings are discussed. The concluding study presents first-order reversal curve diagrams of the fullHeusler alloy nanoparticles synthesized by co-precipitation method, followed by thermal annealing at 700 °C under Ar/H2 atmosphere. Interacting single domain particles were dominantly detected from analysis. PB 9781536144703 £90.00 December 2018 Nova Science Publishers 114 pages

Nonideal Heterojunctions for Image Sensors (Materials Science and Technologies Series) Valentyn Smyntyna, Vitalii Borshchak, Eugene Brytavskyi The subject of the proposed publication is to study electronic processes in a nonideal heterojunction in order to use this material in a high-quality optical fashion and for X-ray image sensor development. The effects of accumulation and erasure of recorded optical information, as well as a satisfactory consistent theory of phenomena and effects are fully described and discussed in this book. The academic level of this book is advanced: It is for specialists studying photoelectronics, the physics of surfaces and sensorics as well as university professors, lecturers and higher school teachers. It could be used also as a textbook for postgraduate students, Masters of Sciences and undergraduates. This contribution describes properties, characteristics and formation processes for nonideal heterojunction structures based on micro- and nanocrystalline thin-film semiconductors applied for optical sensors. The experimental studies concerning the nature of the conductivity features of the nonideal heterojunctions are described in detail. A new model of tunnel-hopping transport over local centers in the space-charge region of heterojunctions with a continuously changing barrier potential is developed and experimentally tested. The characteristic density and morphology of defects at the boundary and in the space charge region of a nonideal heterojunction are calculated. A comprehensive model for the recombination of carriers moving along localized states at the recombination centers of the heteroborder is created. For the first time, the nature of the photosensitivity features of the nonideal heterojunction, associated with the presence of deep centers in the space charge region and their charge exchange under conditions of photoexcitation is described. A prototype of an optical and X-ray image sensor, the equipment and software for reading and visualising recorded information are analysed. Surface Structuration and Its Advantages in Optoelectronics (Materials Science and Technologies Series) Natalia V Kamanina It is well known that after the discovery of fullerenes (1985) and carbon nanotubes (1991) so many scientific and engineering groups in the world have started to use these structures in order to modify the basic properties of the organic and inorganic materials. The main advantage to improve the materials properties have been shown when the fullerenes or carbon nanotubes have been incorporated into the body of the conjugated organic materials or into the inorganic materials lattice. However, the change in material properties when structuring their surface has been shown in less detail. In the current book, namely the surface modification of the different types of the materials are shown. The promising nano-objects used for this aim – the carbon nanotubes – are proposed. The basic features of these nano-objects are regarded to their branched surface, high conductivity, strong hardness of their C—C bonds, little value of the refractive index as well as their complicated and unique mechanisms of charge carrier moving. Different types of the optical materials such as metals (Al, Sc, etc.), semiconductors (ZnSe, ZnS, etc.), optical crystals (LiF, KBr, etc.), ITO layer, and polymer matrix surface are treated by the laser oriented deposition technique under the condition to vertically deposit the nano-objects mentioned above in order to change the refractivity, spectral, mechanical characteristics and wetting phenomena of the materials. Analytical and quantum chemical calculations support the experimental results. The book can extend the materials database and can be useful for the education process as well as for the practical application. PB 9781536140798 £78.00 October 2018 Nova Science Publishers 68 pages

Environment Disaster Social Work from Crisis Response to Building Resilience (Natural Disaster Research, Prediction and Mitigation Series) H C. Johnston Wong Occurrences of disasters are becoming more frequent and serious. Other than natural disasters, humanity is faced with new challenges of city fires, car accidents, disease outbreak, industrial accidents, radioactive exposure, terrorist attacks, environmental hazards and other unimaginable incidents. Social workers and other city emergency response teams – notably medical teams, firemen, police officers and mental health workers – are all called upon to mitigate and minimize disaster effects. Of course, saving lives is of the utmost importance; saving minds, however, cannot be neglected. This book describes the processes of crisis intervention, community mental health promotion and post traumatic growth. Putting resilience at heart has led to the ACT-R approach which can be learned not just by social workers, but by all response workers. Monitoring, Control and Effects of Air Pollution (Environment Engineering Series) Edited by Corbin Tennyson The most important tools in environmental protection is monitoring and modelling. Both the monitoring and modelling of air pollution is essential to provide a picture of the damage humans are doing to the environment, and to enable pollution problems to be discovered and dealt with. An environmental monitoring could be defined as a system of detection, measurements, evaluations and forecasts of environmental states, and the collecting, processing and spreading of information on the environment. Air pollution can cause health problems and it can also damage the environment and property. It has caused thinning of the protective ozone layer of the atmosphere, which is leading to climate change. The source of pollution may be in one country but the impact of pollution may be felt elsewhere. Air pollution and its control is a global issue demanding international cooperation. Monitoring of air pollution is a very important source of data. However, measurement of the air pollutant concentrations, in comparison to monitoring of other elements in the environment, is the most difficult. The difficulties arise from the large dynamics of the atmosphere, causing that it constitutes the main route of pollution spreading and their transport between remaining environmental compartments and universal exposure for a large population without a chance for isolation, which is possible in the case of polluted waters and soil. Another problem is low concentration of air pollutants and their interaction with other gases. This book addresses the subjects related to the selected aspects of pollutants emission, monitoring and their effects. HB 9781681175157 £160.00 January 2017 Scitus Academics 318 pages

Novel Approaches and Their Applications in Risk Assessment (Environment Engineering Series) Keith Marcell Risk assessment is the determination of quantitative or qualitative estimate of risk related to a well-defined situation and a recognised threat. An acceptable risk is a risk that is understood and tolerated usually because the cost or difficulty of implementing an effective countermeasure for the associated vulnerability exceeds the expectation of loss. Risk assessment is involved with some essential steps such as the identification of problem, risk evaluation, and assessment review. Health risk assessment includes variations, such as risk as the type and severity of response, with or without a probabilistic context. Risk assessment consists of an objective evaluation of risk in which assumptions and uncertainties are clearly considered and presented. Part of the difficulty in risk management is that both the quantities by which risk assessment is concerned – potential loss and probability of occurrence -- can be very difficult to measure. Novel Approaches and Their Applications in Risk Assessment is compiled to communicate the latest information on risk assessment approaches and their effectiveness. Presented materials also cover subjects from environmental quality to human health protection. HB 9781681176185 £160.00 January 2017 Scitus Academics 332 pages

Oil Pollution Issues, Impacts and Outcomes (Pollution Science, Technology and Abatement Series) Edited by Emilio Potter, Alyssa Vega This compilation opens by examining earlier investigations of the oil drops dynamics in the marine environment, including the influence of their buoyancy and the dissolution of gases contained inside crude oil. Modelling these processes presents possibilities for estimating the spatial scales of oil drops spreading within the sea environment and on the sea surface, as well as their effect on an ice cover of ice infested seas. The presented information can be the basis for development the instruments for remote detection of crude oil escapes from seabed pipelines. Soil in places of oil pollution, such as Western Siberia, is discussed. The degree of influence of pollutants depends on the type of soils. For instance, it may affect more on peat than on mineral soils. In the northern part of Western Siberia, peatlands with a low content of ash elements are dominant. In the event of an oil leak, an essential element of effective response to any adverse consequences is proper planning for definition of necessary tasks, personnel, and resources. As such, the authors stress the importance of implementing modern features, like automated monitoring and rapid response, in crisis situations in areas of enterprise information systems development. This is urgent for the petroleum and gas sectors of the Russian economy, as the number of oil leaks has increased to 28,000 per year. The concluding paper presents the results of original long-term field research carried out on geographically different seacoasts. The results are analyzed in order to determine the rates of spilled fuel oil natural destruction and to consider their relationship with principal environmental factors such as climatic and hydrological conditions, coast exposure and geomorphology, types of substrate, and intensity of biogeochemical cycles. Fiction Between Nine and Nine Leo Perutz In turn-of-the-century Vienna the impoverished, foreign-born Stanislaus Demba, who earns his livelihood as a tutor of children of the professional class, must urgently find two hundred crowns to take his girlfriend to Italy in order to prevent her from going with a well-off law student. In a series of humorous and intricately-connected vignettes, the Czech-born Leo Perutz, himself an immigrant to Vienna, sends the hero cascading through the various social classes of the city in his quest to obtain the needed money even as he tries to conceal a shameful secret. Besides offering a satire of contemporary life in his characterization of the petty bourgeoisie and the upper class – university professors and intellectuals, gallants and flirts, gamblers and high-class thieves – Between Nine and Nine (1918) also sheds light on the forces that conditioned identity in fin-de-siècle Vienna: industrialization, misogyny, anti-Semitism, classism, and xenophobia. Through the modern, indeterminate narrative stance, the novel, originally entitled Freedom in its serialized version, ultimately depicts the contingency of self-determination and identity in a complex social milieu. On display are the author’s skills as storyteller and caricaturist, his subtle and satiric humor, his highly refined aesthetic sensibilities, and his insightful social commentary. Readers will find him and this novel delightfully provocative. PB 9781572411685 £18.00 January 2010 Ariadne Press 186 pages

Inspector Bronstein and the Anschluss: 1938 Andreas Pittler Vienna, March 1938. The Nazis are about to seize Austria, and the tottering regime of Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg is trying to save the country through a hastily arranged referendum about Austria’s independence. Just at this time Inspector David Bronstein is called to the scene of a crime. A high-ranking Nazi has been violently murdered. And while Bronstein is attempting to solve this murder – and another one as well – indications of an imminent annexation, an Anschluss, of Austria to the Third Reich are growing more and more clear. For Bronstein a double battle against time... With this book Pittler has completed the final volume in Pittler’s Bronstein Pentalogy, depicting here with a wealth of atmosphere and nuance the last hours of Austria and once again mobilizing the protagonists of his saga about the First Austrian Republic. The Pineapple Production, Utilization and Nutritional Properties (Food and Beverage Consumption and Health Series) Edited by Lydia Hampton The opening review included in The Pineapple: Production, Utilization and Nutritional Properties discusses the fundamental and applied aspects related to production of aroma compounds in pineapple fruit. Using different isolation techniques (vacuum distillation, simultaneous distillation-extraction, solvent extraction, dynamic headspace and headspace solid phase-microextraction), the volatile compounds are analyzed in conjunction, mainly with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.Internal browning or blackheart is an important physiological disorder of fresh pineapple fruit occurring during low temperature storage and a limiting factor during export. The authors discuss how phytosanitary treatments including heat, cold, or ionizing radiation can be used to control quarantine pests for market access.Various classes of bioactive metabolites from pineapple reported in the scientific literature (and their nutritional properties) are discussed. The effects of these metabolites on human health are vital, and thus it is extremely important to understand their nutraceutical potential and future applications.Lastly, the authors propose that the incorporation of pineapple peel flour into cooked meat products enhances moisture and texture, and improves probiotic survival during storage. Similarly, the antioxidant capacity of pineapple peel flour enhances lipid rancidity in cooked meat products. PB 9781536145946 £78.00 December 2018 Nova Science Publishers 115 pages

Niue and the Great War Margaret Pointer I am the island of Niue, a small child that stands up to help the Kingdom of King George.' – Niue Island Council. The story of tiny Niue’s involvement in the Great War has captivated people since an account was first published by Margaret Pointer in 2000. In 1915, 160 Niuean men joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as part of the Maori Reinforcements and set sail to Auckland and then Egypt and France. Most had never left the island before, or worn shoes before. Most spoke no English. Most significantly, they had no immunity to European disease. Within three months of leaving New Zealand, over 80 per cent of them had been hospitalised and the army authorities withdrew them. Margaret Pointer became involved in research to trace the lost story of Niue’s involvement in World War I while living on the island in the 1990s. The resulting book, Tagi Tote e Loto Haaku: My Heart is Crying a Little, was published in 2000. Her research has continued since, and Niue and the Great War contains much new material together with new photographs. This moving story has now been set in a wider Pacific context and also considers the contribution made by colonial troops, especially ‘coloured’ ones, to the Allied effort.

About the Author: "Margaret Pointer is a graduate in history from Victoria University of Wellington and for many years taught at secondary school level. Spain 1936 Year Zero Raanan Rein, Joan Maria Thomas Marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, this volume takes a close look at the initial political moves, military actions and consequences of the fratricidal conflict and their impact on both Spaniards and contemporary European powers. The contributors re-examine the crystallization of the political alliances formed in the Republican and the Nationalist zones; the support mobilized by the two warring camps; and the different attitudes and policies adopted by neighbouring and far away countries. Spain 1936: Year Zero goes beyond and against commonly held assumptions as to the supposed unity of the Nationalist camp vis-à-vis the fragmentation of the Republican one; and likewise brings to the fore the complexities of initial support of the military rebellion by Nazi Germany and Soviet support of the beleaguered Republic. Situating the Iberian conflict in the larger international context, senior and junior scholars from various countries challenge the multitude of hitherto accepted ideas about the beginnings of the Spanish Civil War. A primary aim of the editors is to enable discussion on the Spanish Civil War from lesser known or realized perspectives by investigating the civil war’s impact on countries such as Argentina, Japan, and Jewish Palestine; and from lesser heard voices at the time of women, intellectuals, and athletes. Original contributions are devoted to the Popular Olympiad organized in Barcelona in July 1936, Japanese perceptions of the Spanish conflict in light of the 1931 invasion to Manchuria, and international volunteers in the International Brigades. Mathematics Advanced Modern Engineering Mathematics Edited by Gregory Antoni, M G Sobamowo There is a widely understood need for professional engineers and student‘ becoming engineers’ to think mathematically and to use mathematics to describe and analyse different aspects of the real world they seek to engineer. Mathematics has long been known to be problematic for university engineering students and their teachers. Mathematics is the background of every engineering field. Together with physics, mathematics has helped engineering develop. Without it engineering cannot evolved so fast we can see today. Without mathematics, engineering cannot become as fascinating as it is now. Linear algebra, calculus, statistics, differential equations and numerical analysis are taught as they are important to understand many engineering subjects such as fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electric circuits and mechanics of materials to name a few. One thinks of the dynamics of structures and industrial fluid mechanics in the engineering of bridges. Mathematical modeling therefore plays a key role in the formation of engineers, and there has been much research into how engineers should be taught the essential mathematics. This book offers a review of standard mathematics coursework while effectively integrating science and engineering throughout the text. In this book, several examples of applications of mathematics in mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering are covered. Applications in this book are the real ones found in the engineering fields, which may not be the same as discussed in many mathematics textbooks. Medicine Bacillus subtilis Morphology, Functions and Role in Disease Management (Microbiology Research Advances Series) Edited by Angelo Curtis Bacillus subtilis is a motile gram-positive bacterium widespread in the soil and the gut of animals which has been reported to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. In this book the authors begin by outlining the main features of chemotaxis as a behaviour, then reviewing the molecular machinery Bacillus subtilis uses to sense and respond to chemical cues. Following this, the authors discuss how bacterial biofilms can form on biotic and abiotic surfaces, developing various reversible and irreversible stages depending on environmental conditions. An important characteristic of biofilm is the extracellular matrix, which is usually formed by exopolysaccharide and extracellular proteins by Bacillus subtilis. Next, this compilation highlights the key features in Bacillus subtilis lipopeptides as eco-friendly controllers of plant pathogens. Currently, phytopathogens impact all agricultural systems, leading to economic losses worldwide. The closing chapter discusses NKCP®, a novel dietary supplement derived from traditional Japanese traditional food, which improved patients’ symptoms and blood pressure by improving blood flow through antithrombotic and fibrinolytic properties. Resistin Structure, Function and Role in Disease (Genetics -- Research and Issues Series) Edited by Gerald Maldonado Over the past decade, adipose tissue has received much attention for its immunological properties. Additionally, it has become increasingly apparent that adipose-secreted factors such as leptin, tumor necrosis factor-a, IL-6, adiponectin and more recently, resistin are implicated in some inflammatory and metabolic diseases. As such, this book opens by discussing resistin’s therapeutic properties. Because evidence appears to suggest that resistin is a proinflammatory cytokine, resistin may impact metabolic disease.Following this, the authors present experimental and clinical evidence indicating that resistin may have functions related to inflammation and oxidative stress. The circulating resistin level may be also useful as a marker of the effects of exercise.Resistin may also encourage vasculopathy through the promotion of macrophage scavenger receptors and CD36 atheroma macrophages expression, the formation of foam cells, as well as proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells. This causes endothelial dysfunction, resulting in limited nitric oxide and increased superoxide production. When present in the diseased vessel wall, resistin may orchestrate pro-atherosclerotic events, contributing to atherosclerosis progression towards plaque rupture. Thus, resistin may augment monocyte and macrophage infiltration, interfere in cell cross-talk and modulate the expression of various inflammatory cytokines leading to the acceleration of plaque growth. Sensorineural Hearing Loss Prevalence, Risk Factors and Treatment (Audiology and Hearing Research Advances Series) Edited by Edmund Barton Hearing loss in the pediatric population is often a source of anxiety both for families and health professionals, with current rehabilitation options mainly consisting of hearing aids and cochlear implants. As such, the authors present an overview of the causes of progressive hearing loss (both congenital and acquired) and explore the management of this condition. Sensorineural hearing loss, if not properly treated, may likely compromise speech and, consequently, the psychosocial development of the affected child. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment has a significant impact on the likelihood of hearing rehabilitation and on social development. The authors provide an analysis of the prevalence, stratification of risk factors, and the most appropriate treatment for sensorineural hearing loss. The authors go on to review the role of the gender medicine in the field of audiology. Currently, there is growing interest on the effects of gender differences on the pathophysiology and pharmacology of several disorders; however, there are still few data about the relation between gender-related factors and hearing loss. This compilation also proposes hyperbaric oxygenation as an adjunct therapy in the treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The authors take into consideration the physiologic, biochemical and cellular effect of oxygenation on the human brain and body. The authors discuss congenital cytomegalovirus infection, the most common cause of nonhereditary sensorineural hearing loss during childhood worldwide. It affects 0.2% to 2.5% of all liveborn neonates and the highest incidence occurs in developing countries, where 1% to 5% of all live births can be infected. An overview of hearing loss caused by the Zika virus infection (both congenital and adult) is provided and recent discussion on the management of this condition is explored. First isolated in 1947, Zika virus rose to prominence after its outbreak in Latin America in 2015. Due to a high incidence of microcephaly in the Brazilian northeast, the correlation between Zika virus infection during pregnancy and this congenital malformation was recognised. Half the Perfect World tells the story of the post-war international artist community that formed on the Greek island of Hydra. Most famously, it included renowned singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and his partner Marianne Ihlen, as well as many other artists and writers including the Australian literary couple, Charmian Clift and George Johnston, who fostered this fabled colony. Drawing on many previously unseen letters, manuscripts and diaries, and richly illustrated by the eyewitness photographs of LIFE magazine photo-journalist James Burke, Half the Perfect World reveals the private lives and relationships of the Hydra expatriates. It charts the promise of a creative life that drew many of them to the island, and documents the fracturing of the community as it came under pressure from personal ambitions and wider social changes. For all the unrealised youthful ambitions, internal strife and personal tragedy that attends this story, the authors nonetheless find that the example of these writers, dreamers and drifters continues to resonate and inspire. The Holocaust in Czechoslovak and Czech Feature Films (Literatur und Kultur im mittleren und östlichen Europa) Sarka Sladovnikova Šárka Sladovníková analyzes the depiction of the Holocaust in Czechoslovak and Czech Feature Films and the relevant literary pretexts. While she charts the social and cultural framework in which the films were made and how this framework changed, she also focuses on the cinematic language, the composition of and narration in each film (eg: the depiction of the war and the Shoah as a narratively closed versus a narratively open event), genre aspects of the films (e.g., the use of comedy and humor), convention and innovation in presenting motifs and characters (the division of gender roles, the character of the good German). Particular attention is paid to the portrayal of stereotypes and countertypes in the films, where already well-known images, situations, and backdrops are repeated and which meet viewers’ expectations or, in contrast, which form countertypes and countersituations that go against the grain. Many of the films analyzed are adaptations of literary works. Therefore, this book is also a contribution to the rapidly developing field of adaptation studies. Physics Advanced Visual Quantum Mechanics Robert B Griffiths Quantum mechanics is an imperative academic achievement of the 20th century. It is one of the more complicated fields in physics that has exaggerated our understanding of nano-meter length scale systems vital for chemistry, materials, optics, and electronics. Quantum mechanics has played an important role in photonics, quantum electronics, and micro-electronics. But many more emerging technologies require the understanding of quantum mechanics; and hence, it is important that scientists and engineers understand quantum mechanics better. In the strange world of quantum mechanics the application of visualization techniques is largely pleasing, for it allows us to portray phenomena that cannot be seen by any other means. Visual Quantum Mechanics relies a great deal on visualization as a tool for mediating details knowledge. The book is intended to explain the basic concepts and phenomena of quantum mechanics by means of visualisation. With an introduction to quantum information theory, this book integrates selected topics from atomic physics — spherical symmetry, the hydrogen atom, and particles with spin. There have been tremendous strides in the field of quantum information, this book introduces relativistic quantum theory, emphasizing its important applications in condensed matter physics. It explores relativistic quantum mechanics and the strange behavior of Dirac equation solutions. The book places an emphasis on ideas and concepts, with a fair to moderate amount of mathematical thoroughness. HB 9781681179810 £170.00 January 2019 Scitus Academics 308 pages

Electromagnetic Radiation History, Theory and Research (Physics Research and Technology Series) Edited by Constantinos Koutsojannis Our dependence on electromagnetic radiation includes transportation, communication, entertainment and health. Consequently electromagnetic fields interact with inner electromagnetism or tissue structures of living systems as human beings, promoting at the same time a great interest between biomedical and natural sciences while improving our knowledge to develop new and better diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. All kinds of biological and health effects concerning electromagnetic fields have also become a matter of public concern. According to the available scientific data from in vitro cell levers as well as animal and human at tissue level experiments, exposure to EM radiation is considered likely to be harmful to human health among other agents as chemicals and environmental pollution. This book aims to bring together basic knowledge including history and introductory mathematical approaches, combined with recent advances concerning radiation interaction with biological matter that includes occupational safety aspects from electromagnetic radiation. Students, researchers, as well as scientists of different fields who want a brief introduction and deep understanding of research approaches used could take advantage of starting their own path in studying the consequences of electromagnetic radiation on human health. Plant Sciences Origins and Evolution of Plants on the Earth and the Descendants of ANITA (Science, Evolution and Creationism Series) Subir Ranjan Kundu Edited by Pritha Biswas Evolutionary biology may still be a complicated field of study for many, but in this book the concept has been simplified with regard to angiosperms. The book walks the readers through the pathway of a series of events resulting in the evolution in different branches of life on Earth over the last 4 billion years. The theory explains the green planet from the pre-existing dark planet to the blue planet while touching areas like spatiotemporal changes, aquatic life as well as organic and inorganic evolution. While the mystery of evolution has stirred all from the shape of a flower to sliding continents, the writer explains and elaborates on his standpoint with relevance. Poetry Edgeland and Other Poems David Eggleton The poetry in David Eggleton’s new collection possesses an intensity and driven energy, using the poet’s recognisable signature oratory voice, strong in beat and measure, rooted in rich traditions of chant, lament and ode. Mashing together the lyrical and the slangy, celebrating local vernaculars while simultaneously plugged in to a global zeitgeist of technobabble and fake news, Eggleton recycles and ‘repurposes’ high visual culture and demotic aural culture. Edgeland offers a tragicomic and surreal skewering of the cons, swindles, posturings and flaws of damaged people on the make, dislocating the reader with high speed jinks and swerves. A satirical eye interrogates ‘data’, media bilge, opinion, social change, extreme experience, and worst-case-scenario extrapolations. A menagerie of vivid characters burst off the page – including the man who mistook the moon for a candy bar, instigators, prestidigitators, procurators, promulgators, Zorro and Governor Grey – alongside a survey of 35 types of beard, an ode to ooze, metadada, Gordon Ramsay’s pan-sizzled bull’s pizzle, a Baxterian moa, and various waka jumpers hailing from Jafaville to Jack’s Blowhole. Poeta selected and new poetry Cilla McQueen Born in 1949, Bluff-based Cilla McQueen is one of New Zealand's best-loved poets. Poeta: Selected and New Poems brings together a definitive selection of her poetry spanning five decades, arranged by the poet in a thematic narrative that elucidates abiding themes while maintaining a loose chronology of her creative life to date. Of mixed Scottish and English heritage, McQueen is a translocated Hebridean, a spokesperson variously for the southern islands and coast, Rakiura, Fiordland, Murihiku and Dunedin. One of a few poetic voices of the south, she has long been part of a social matrix of artists, among them Hone Tuwhare, Ralph Hotere and Marilynn Webb, dedicated to bringing out the native brogue and colours of Southland-Otago. Poeta gathers together poems from the poet's 14 previous volumes, punctuated by 11 striking drawings, and also includes a range of new work that shows her riddling creativity continuing to grow and evolve. The Farewell Tourist Alison Glenny Pushing against the boundaries of what poetry might be, Alison Glenny’s The Farewell Tourist is haunting, many-layered and slightly surreal. In The Magnetic Process sequence a man and a woman inhabit a polar world, adrift in zones of divergence, where dreams are filled with snow, icebergs, and sinking ships. Their scientific instruments and observations measure a fragmented and uncertain space where conventional perspectives are violated. In a series of histories – of the Atmosphere, of the Honeymoon – footnotes reference vanished texts. By turns mysterious, ominous and evocative, they represent connections to an obscured narrative of disintegration and icy melancholy. Politics & Government African Studies Matters A History of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, 1961-2017 (Political, Economic and Security Issues of Africa Series) Jacob U’Mofe Gordon This book provides the conceptual framework for documenting the history of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, West Africa. The Institute was established in 1961 by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of the newly independent nation of Ghana. It was the first Institute of African Studies (IAS) at a major university in Sub-Saharan Africa. Nkrumah’s vision was to incorporate national development into the mission of educational institutions in Ghana and throughout Africa. The role of African Studies was to provide direction through research, knowledge production and applications for development. This book begins with two historical contexts: (1) the global context and (2) the establishment of the University of Ghana, formerly the University College of the Gold Coast, founded in 1948. The book relies heavily on archival materials at the Institute, the University Archive, and interviews with many of the architects and Directors of the Institute, as well as faculty, students, alumni, and others who contributed to and were impacted by the Institute for 50+ years. The book documents key milestones in the history of the Institute from its establishment in 1961; its mission as envisioned by its founder, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and his address at the official opening of the Institute in October 1963; the development of research and postgraduate teaching curricula (MA, MPhil, and PhD in African Studies); the incorporation of six credit hours of African Studies courses as a requirement in the curricula of all undergraduate majors at the University of Ghana (current enrollment is 40,000 students); a worldwide recognition of the study of African music and dance through the works of the renowned ethnomusicologist J H K Nketia; the production of Ghanaian leaders on multiple levels in public and private sectors; the founding of the academic research Journal of Contemporary African Studies; the African Thinkers Program; research focus on African traditional leadership and chieftancy; the establishment of the Kwame Nkrumah Endowed Chair in African Studies funded by the international mining conglomerate AngloGold Ashanti; the development of external linkages with universities on 5 continents; and the creation of the first continental African Studies Association of Africa in 2013, a major historical achievement that culminated in the International Conference on African Studies at the University of Ghana. Moving forward, the Institute promises to build on its past and present to promote Pan-African Studies for national development in Africa and the African Diaspora. Borotbism A Chapter in the History of the Ukrainian Revolution (Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society Series) Ivan Maistrenko Much has been written on the 1917–1920 revolution in Ukraine, on the national movement, the Makhnovists and the Bolsheviks. Yet there were others with a mass following whose role has faded from history books. One such party was the Borotbisty, the heirs of the mass Ukrainian Party of SocialistRevolutionaries, an independent party seeking to achieve national liberation and social emancipation. Though widely known in revolutionary Europe in their day, the Borotbisty were decimated during the Stalinist holocaust in Ukraine. Out of print for over half a century, this lost text by Ivan Maistrenko, the last survivor of the Borotbisty, provides a unique account on this party and its historical role. Part memoir and part history, this is a thought-provoking book which challenges previous approaches to the revolution and shows how events in Ukraine decided the fate not only of the Russian Revolution but the upheavals in Europe at the time. Domestic Terrorism Homegrown Violence (Terrorism, Hot Spots and Conflict-Related Issues Series) Edited by Brett Schultz Since the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 (9/11), domestic terrorists -- people who commit crimes within the homeland and draw inspiration from U.S.-based extremist ideologies and movements -- have not received as much attention from federal law enforcement as their violent jihadist counterparts. The first chapter discusses how domestic terrorists broadly fit into the counterterrorism landscape, a terrain that since 9/11 has been largely shaped in response to terrorists inspired by foreign ideologies. This chapter focuses especially on how domestic terrorism is conceptualized by the federal government and issues involved in assessing this threat’s significance. Recent events of domestic terrorism which have been either perpetrated by active duty United States military personnel, or have been indirectly linked to active duty and ex-military persons, have caused significant concern and alarm over the extent to which extremists and hate-groups are present in the military services. The Rise of Domestic Terrorism and Its Relation to United States Armed Forces is discussed in chapter 2. In light of the violence related to protests in Charlottesville, VA, on 12 August 2017, policymakers may be interested in how the concepts of domestic terrorism, hate crime, and homegrown violent extremism compare with one another as described in chapter 3. They are fairly distinct ideas that federal law enforcement agencies use to categorize key types of criminals whose illegal activities are at least partly ideologically motivated. November 1998 the FBI activated NICS for the purposes of determining an individual's firearms transfer and possession eligibility whenever an unlicensed individual seeks to acquire a firearm from a federally licensed gun dealer. Federal law enumerates several grounds that disqualify someone from firearms eligibility. However, being a known or suspected terrorist is not a federal firearms eligibility disqualifier as reported in chapter 4. PB 9781536146103 £90.00 December 2018 Nova Science Publishers 141 pages

Israel, the United States, and the War Against Hamas, July–August 2014 The “Special Relationship” under Scrutiny Zaki Shalom Operation Protective Edge, launched on July 8, 2014, saw heavy fighting between the Israel Defense Forces and Hamas in Gaza. Throughout the war US government media spokespersons confirmed Israel’s right to self-defense against rockets and tunnels, and condemned Hamas for initiating the conflict and its use of human shields. But there is an important difference between confirmation and pro-active demonstration at the highest political level. The longstanding alliance between the United States and Israel has always been subject to the administration and president of the day. In this case, the Obama administration’s support for Israel’s right to self-defense was qualified, and as a result the Israeli political leadership felt constrained in its ability to defeat Hamas militarily without risking criticism from the United States that would impact negatively on the special relationship. In its role as ally, the United States was careful not to apply direct political pressure on Israel. However, US government public criticisms relating to Gazan civilian loss of life damaged Israel on the international stage via harrowing media coverage surrounding the conflict. The Federal Aviation Administration order to airlines to stop flying to Israel enhanced Hamas’ claim that it had inflicted a strategic defeat to the Zionist State. For the last 70 years Israel has recognized that the United States is its primary strategic ally – a principle initiated by Israel’s first Prime Minister and Defense Minister, David Ben-Gurion. Political and military policies have to be directed to prevent a rift. But the Protective Edge experience has brought to the fore that in times of crisis Israel cannot rely on a special relationship to secure its safety and must of necessity possess the political will and military ability to defend itself and to take actions that may result in a strained relationship. Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society 2018/2 Edited by George Soroka, Tomasz Stepniewski, Julie Fedor "Featuring a special section on Russian Foreign Policy Towards the 'Near Abroad' Issue 4,2 deals with Russia’s post-Maidan foreign policy towards the so-called near abroad, or the former Soviet states. This is an important and timely topic, as Russia’s policy perspectives have changed dramatically since 2013/2014, as have those of its neighbors. The Kremlin today is paradoxically following an aggressive realist agenda that seeks to clearly delineate its sphere of influence in Europe and Eurasia while simultaneously attempting to promote soft-power and a historical-civilizational justification for its recent actions in Ukraine (and elsewhere). The result is an often perplexing amalgam of policy positions that are difficult to disentangle. Russia Background, Issues and Recent Developments (European Political, Economic, and Security Issues Series) Edited by Ulyana Asya Romanov This book is a compilation of CRS reports on Russia today. The first chapter examines Russia’s 2018 presidential election, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin was widely expected to secure reelection (and since then, has won). The second chapter examines recent developments in Russian policy, including the increasingly authoritarian governance since Vladimir’s Putin return to the presidential post in 2012, Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region and support of separatists in eastern Ukraine, violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty; Moscow’s intervention in Syria in support of Bashar al Asad’s government; increased military activity in Europe and cyber-related influence operations, that, according to the US intelligence community, have targeted the 2016 US Presidential election and countries in Europe. The next two chapters go into further detail on Russian compliance with the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty and the new START Treaty (a new strategic arms reduction treaty that the US and Russia signed on April 8th 2010. The last chapter included in this book is a 3-page report on the Balkan’s uneasy relations with Russia. Despite Russia’s effort to influence the Balkans’ political orientation, which has led the US and, more significantly, the EU to increase attention to the region, some observers believe that Moscow likely will not be successful in realigning any of the Balkan states away from the West in the long run. See No Evil New Zealand’s betrayal of the people of West Papua Maire Leadbeater See No Evil issues a challenge to New Zealanders. The book begins by relating the little-known history of West Papua, but its focus is on the impact of New Zealand’s foreign policy on the indigenous Melanesian inhabitants. In the 1950s New Zealand supported self-determination for the former Dutch colony, but in 1962 opted to back Indonesia as it took over the territory. Delving deep into historical government archives, many of them obtained under the Official Information Act, this meticulously researched book uncovers the untold story of New Zealand’s unprincipled and often hypocritical diplomacy. The consequences of repressive Indonesian rule have been tragic for the West Papuan people, who are experiencing ‘slow genocide’. West Papua remains largely closed to foreign journalists, but its story is now beginning to be heard. A growing number of Pacific Island nations are calling for change, but so far New Zealand has opted for caution and collusion to preserve a ‘business as usual’ relationship with Indonesia. See No Evil is a shocking account by one of New Zealand’s most respected authors on peace and Pacific issues, issuing a powerful call for a just and permanent solution – self-determination – for the people of West Papua. The First Portuguese Republic Between Liberalism and Democracy (1910–1926) (The Portuguese-Speaking World: Its History, Politics and Culture) Miriam Pereira The first Portuguese Republic stood between 1910 and 1926. A characteristic of the Republican period was the strong civil participation, particularly by the urban population. Freedom of press and of association became constitutional rights and incentivized a powerful and very diversified associative movement in which trade unions and friendly societies stood out in the political spectrum as they promoted popular education and culture. The time-span studied is characterized by Portugal’s colonial expansion in Africa, an important factor in Portugal’s involvement in the Great War. As changes in education, in the concept and structure of family and in the status of women linked with the new politics, so emerged a different relationship between State and Church, new avenues for the development of economic activity, an increased focus on better labour conditions, and emigration to Brazil. Miriam Halpern Pereira provides a clear overview of the Republic’s many achievements and the internal political and wider international limitations resulting in its downfall. The political, social and cultural causes of the military overthrow of the first Portuguese Republic are analyzed against the backdrop of the concomitant rise of fascist regimes in other European countries in the years preceding the 1929 Depression. The work provides a much needed updated synthesis of the myriad circumstances of the period, and is intended for both the general public and students of modern Europe. In a clear and concise style Between Liberalism and Democracy sheds new light on a controversial epoch of Portuguese history.

About the Author: Miriam Pereira is emeritus professor of Contemporary History at ISCTE/University Institute of Lisbon). She is the founder of the scientific journal Ler História. Ukraine after Maidan Revisiting Domestic and Regional Security (Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society Series) Tomasz Stepniewski When public protests first began in Ukraine at the end of 2013, the failed promise of the Orange Revolution was still fresh in the minds of many Ukrainians. However, unlike in the aftermath of 2004/2005, the political and military crises ignited by the Euromaidan brought profound changes not only for Ukraine, but also for neighboring states and Europe more generally. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014, along with the outbreak of fighting in the Donets Basin, has resulted in a profound shift in how domestic and regional security is perceived. More broadly, these events have also called into question the durability of the post-Cold War world order, which had been based upon peaceful coexistence between states, the integrity of sovereign borders, and an acceptance of the legitimacy of international law. While the effects of the Euromaidan have already been analyzed in terms of Ukrainian politics and relations between Ukraine, Russia, and the EU, what has not yet taken place is a sustained analysis of how its legacies have reverberated throughout the post-communist region and wider Europe (and how these altered international perceptions have, in turn, affected the subsequent course of Ukraine’s domestic politics). Writing from a variety of viewpoints and backgrounds, this volume’s contributors seek to address these lacunae. Among other topics, they focus on Russia’s dissatisfaction with the post-Cold War international order, examine issues of ontological insecurity in an increasingly networked world, assess the limits of Western leverage, evaluate Ukrainian public opinion concerning NATO and the EU, consider the broader security implications of the Euromaidan for Eastern Europe, explore the role of migration and demographic factors for Ukrainian security, and assess how contentious pasts are being utilized as tools of statecraft by both Ukrainian actors and outside forces. Religion & Media in China Edited by Zheng Hsu Jin Especially with the advent of social media, the Internet in China has become the closest thing that China has to a public squarea place where ordinary people can express their ideas and opinions. China has been a multi-religion country since the ancient times. It is well known that Confucianism is an indigenous religion and is the soul of Chinese culture, which enjoyed popular support among people and even became the guiding ideology for feudalism society, but it did not develop into a national belief. It makes the culture more tolerant to others, thus, many other religions have been brought into the country in different dynasties, but none of them developed powerful enough in the history and they only provide diverse people more spiritual support. Religion and the Media in China examines whether religion contributes to the development of civil society in China. It examines how the global interconnectedness of the Internet influences the religion in China and the diaspora, in terms of how they communicate their faith, build their communities and mobilize for their causes. Electronic media has enabled wider circulation of religious symbols and discourses across a range of social fields, which tends to move religion out of the differentiated religious sphere to which it is notionally confined in liberal versions of modernity and into various contested public spheres. The paper discusses whether online social media allows Chinese Christians in the mainland and overseas to engage in religious and socio-political discourses in the same space, and if boundaries between the social and political domains established by the modern secular Chinese state are constantly being blurred and transcended in the process. The book examines whether the potential blurring of boundaries between the religious and the socio-political in the online practice of religious notions to mobilize themselves in respond to socio-political issues, and hence becoming actors in, and contribute to, the development of civil society in China. It explores the ways in which individuals in the islands have maintained their connections to Judaism as lineage, as a religion and as a culture. Transported overseas from Spain and Portugal in the 1500s while fleeing the Inquisition, and later during the second wave of exodus from Europe under threat of World War II, the Caribbean provided safe harbours for a number of Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews. There is no doubt that their presence in the Caribbean and Latin America over the last 500 years has had a tremendous impact on the growth and development of industry, modern commerce and culture. Their contribution to their new island homelands has been a lasting one. From the technology for the cultivation of sugar and the development of trade and commerce across the Atlantic, to the arts and education, Jewish life within the region has left and continues to leave an indelible mark. For the author, there have been many stops along the way in completing this book. She has travelled and interacted with Jews across the globe, and these encounters were the genesis of the questions she asked herself about Jews of all descriptions. Indeed, many of the questions and their answers arise from an existential need to rationalise her own thoughts about her personal identity. This is a pattern that the author has noted among a number of the theorists included in this work. PB 9781536144376 £78.00 December 2018 Nova Science Publishers 139 pages
