Forthcoming Titles A Tea Caddy Collection Mark Bramble Through photographs and anecdotes, Broadway author and director Mark Bramble presents the vast collection of antique tea caddies he and his late mother assembled over more than 5 decades of collecting. Explore the historical and societal atmospheres that engendered such varied styles of caddies and how interest in these treasures, created for storing tea, coincided with the competitive search for the formula to make "true" porcelain. The history behind the tea caddy reinforces the overlap between art and functionality, and how the culture of artistic creation is a random blend of geography, sociology, talent, and luck. In this generous volume, collectors are treated to an endearing reflection on a lifetime hobby of mother and son, whose collection encompasses centuries of worldwide artistic creation.

About the Author: Mark Bramble is the author and director of many Broadway musicals, including Barnum and the Tony Award winning Best Musical 42nd Street. He began his theatrical career under the mentorship of legendary producer David Merrick, for whom he worked on more than twenty Broadway productions. His many collaborations with Michael Stewart include The Grand Tour with songs by Jerry Herman and the off Broadway opera Elizabeth & Essex. He directed the Broadway and London revivals of 42nd Street and has staged the show all over the world. HB 9780764354571 £38.50 March 2018 Schiffer Publishing 160 pages 435 color images

Salt, Sword and Crozier Books and Coins from the Prince-Bishopric of Salzburg (c. 1500-c. 1800) Felice Lifshitz, Joseph F Patrouch Like the popes in Rome, the Prince-Bishops of Salzburg ruled over substantial territories as secular princes. Salt, Sword, and Crozier highlights their dual authority—the princely sword and the bishop’s staff or crozier—and the basis of their economic power in their control of natural resources such as salt. The exhibition showcases books from the Salzburg prince-bishop’s seminary library that were printed from the fifteenth through the early-nineteenth century, supplemented by coins minted under the authority of successive archbishops beginning in the twelfth century and ending in 1786. It presents fascinating new details for each year that gold coins were minted, the existing distribution of these scarce coins, a survey of the greatest collections ever assembled, and the provenances of the rarest of the gold coins.

The Arab Chest Sheila Unwin, Terence Clark The first exhaustive study of a piece of furniture that has been used in the Arab world for centuries, and on the East African coast since the early 1800s. The Arab chest caught the attention of expatriates and travellers throughout these regions, and by the mid-20th century it had become a collector's item in the West. Sheila Unwin first came across the chests in East Africa in the early l950s. Since then she has been determined to discover their provenance and unravel their stylistic origins. This journey of detection is reflected in her historical overviews, which cover the early Arab trading networks, Arabs and Persians in East Africa, the Gulf and Oman, the Mughals in India, and the early explorations and trading expeditions of the Portuguese, Dutch and British from East Africa to the Far East. Her study of these enables her to trace the cultural influences that have combined to produce the chests, and to chart their complex origins. More than a historical survey, the book is also a guide to the classification, care and cleaning of chests. It is lavishly illustrated with archive and contemporary photographs and maps, while line drawings demonstrate the differences in classification and type of chests and fittings. The English Revolver A Collectors’ Guide to the Guns, their History & Values George Prescott Famous throughout the nineteenth century for the quality of its products, the English revolver industry began a steady decline after World War I from which it never recovered. Apart from the famous Webley service revolvers, many products of this important industry are little known outside of the auction house and sale room. This book sets out to rectify that situation, describing Adam's and Tranter's revolvers, as valued in their day as any of Webley's products, and including guns from the more obscure makers neglected by previous writers. In particular, the chapter on military revolvers is one of the most important sections of the book, beginning with the British government's early purchase of Colt's percussion weapon and concluding with the Webley Service revolvers, strikingly familiar to many who served in the British Army in both World Wars. Finally, many of the guns are pictured here for the first time, a number having been photographed especially for this book.

About the Author: George Prescott has been writing and publishing upon a variety of subjects, including firearms, since 1993. He lives in Kent, and currently writes about English weapons for Classic Arms & Militaria magazine, amongst other things. Toy Forts & Castles European-Made Toys of the 19th & 20th Centuries Allen Hickling Contained within this authoritative text is the exciting history of the manufacture of toy forts and castles in western Europe throughout the turbulent nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Lavishly illustrated with nearly 800 images, this book provides detailed information on who made these castles, palaces, and fortresses, when, where, and how, and with what materials. The author focuses especially on manufacturers in Germany and Great Britain, but covers Denmark, Belgium, and France as well -- and describes the fascinating story of the industry’s rise and demise. Company histories show how these manufacturers, often successive generations of families, dealt with the enormous economic and political obstacles of the times. Organized spreadsheets with serial numbers, dates, dimensions, and distinctive features of products will satisfy the curiosities of toy collectors, museum curators, archivists, antique dealers, architectural history buffs, and more.

About the Author: Allen Hickling has been collecting toy forts and castles for thirty years. He has assembled one of the largest collections in the world, part of which is in a museum in Cyprus.

Reviews: "Many collectors will know Allen Hickling from toy shows round and about the country, which he has been attending for many decades, and has become the acknowledged master of collecting forts and castles. And of course many toy soldier fans display their collections on toy buildings. Chapters cover the history of toy forts, the Hausser story, the rest of the German makers, Lines Brothers, the rest of the British makers, and various European makers. Plastic collectors will find examples by Britains, Timpo, Kleeware, Starlux, Elastolin and others.” -- Plastic Warrior, Issue 163 HB 9780764348136 £57.50 January 2016 Schiffer Publishing 340 pages 772 color photos
