AGNES MARTIN Pioneer, Painter, Icon Henry Martin
“One of America's least recognized masters of 20th-century abstraction” — The Economist AGNES MARTIN (1912–2004) now ranks among the great artists of the Twentieth Century. Canadian-born, Martin became a key figure in the male-dominated 1960s art world, creating abstract and geometric paintings that bridged the work of her contemporaries Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, with that of a new generation of minimalists including Carl Andre and Eva Hesse. However, at the height of her career, Martin abandoned this success and New York. Recurring treatment (including shock treatment) for schizophrenia in the infamous Bellevue Hospital had taken its toll on the artist and she needed an escape: “I had to have time and nobody’s going to give you time where I was,” she said, “So I had to leave”. For almost two years Martin travelled across the US and Canada before finally returning to New Mexico for inspiration, as Georgia O ’Keeffe, D.H. Lawrence, Willa Cather, and many more had done before her. Here, Martin resumed her practice and went on to become an influence on a new generation of artists, including Rachel Whiteread and Zoe Leonard. For the next thirty years Martin was prolific, producing paintings on the themes of joy and happiness. Before she died in 2004, aged ninety-two, she had become, after an early life of hardship, “the greatest artist in the world,” recipient of the Venice Biennale Golden Lion Award (1997) and a Whitney Museum retrospective (1993). In 2015, a major retrospective of at Tate Modern, London, introduced Martin ’s work to a new generation for the first time in twenty years. While Martin’s work has been examined in previous books, her personal life has yet to be fully explored—until now. Throughout her life, Martin’s gender, sexuality, profession, social status, and schizophrenia made her an outsider. Based on new interviews with Agnes Martin’s family, friends, and lovers, Henry Martin explores Martin’s outsider status and charts her story from the pioneer plains of Canada, to the desert of New Mexico and New York’s bohemian circles where her transformation from outsider to icon was hard-won. Researched since 2013, Agnes Martin: Pioneer, Painter, Icon is certain to be a mainstay for readers of the arts, and admirers of the creative spirit. Revelatory accounts of the artist’s early life, combined with unpublished photographs from Martin’s family and friends, make this an essential biography on the artist. About the Author: Henry Martin is an award-winning Irish writer. His plays have featured at Project Arts Centre, Roundhouse, Underbelly, Arcola, Theatre503, and Belltable; his fiction and poetry is published in Ireland, Mexico, USA and UK; and he has written on art and books for Soho House and Phaidon Press, where he worked in editorial and rights. He has a BA in English and Philosophy from the National University of Ireland, Galway, an MA in Playwriting from Royal Holloway, University of London, and he is pursuing an MA (Res) in art history at the University of Buckingham and the National Gallery, London, with a Tavolozza Foundation Scholarship. www.henry-martin.co.uk 368 pages * 205x125mm * 16 illus * May 2018 * PB * £18.50 * 9781943156306
Forthcoming Titles It Must Be Art Big O Poster Artists of the 1960s and 70s Michael Fishel, Nigel Suckling, Roger Dean Throughout the 1960s and 70s, London-based Big O Posters helped define the new and democratic art medium of the psychedelic poster, a vehicle for rebellion against the old order that went hand in hand with the music, literature, and film of the time. This is a comprehensive collection of works published by Big O artists, astonishingly creative folks whose artistry developed almost completely outside the influence of the art establishment. Included in more than 300 images are works by 19 artists, including Martin Sharp, Roger Dean, H.R. Giger, Robert Venosa, and Vali Myers whose signature styles include sci-fi, fantasy, visionary, botanical, and surrealism. In addition to hundreds of original works, this book digs below the surface to offer insights and anecdotes about the era, the artistic process, and reveals connections to artists from the past (Aubrey Beardsley, Alphonse Mucha, Kay Nielsen) whose spirit chimed with the age of Big O Posters. Made for Walking A Modest History of the Fashion Boot Andy Peake Social meets fashion history in the tantalizing story of the boot from the Roaring Twenties and Prohibition to online shopping and fashion blogs. Weaving together such unlikely elements as Glam Rock, the martyrdom of Joan of Arc, and the Iran-Contra scandal, it shows how the modern fashion boot plays with our ideas of gender, straddling the line between practical and stylish, between fashion and fetish. Peake, author of the popular Made for Walking blog, includes thought-provoking photos and graphs that look deeply into what boots do, and what we make them do. In the words of renowned designer Beth Levine, "Boots moved into prominence the same time The Pill did. Both were symbols of a woman's new freedom and emancipation." Whether you're a student of fashion history, a collector of vintage clothes, or someone who feels "five hundred times more dashing" wearing boots, this book is for you. Open Aperture The Evolution of Photography in an Abstract World Paul Matte Fine art photography, like science, is undergoing major transformations. Just as George Eastman's invention of roll film changed the world's artistic outlook, so too have Instagram and other communications technologies multiplied the possibilities for artistic expression. This retrospective, organized by genre rather than year, explores important categories such as camera-less photograms, self-portraiture, environmental portraiture, street photography, documentation, and abstraction. It contains examples of the groundbreaking work of photographers from Diane Arbus, Edward Weston, and Alfred Stieglitz to Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, often grouping the artists together in unexpected ways. While it provides a brief history of the different genres, this is not a history book, but rather a study of the uniqueness of particular photographic visions in their time. It will inspire fine art photographers to challenge preconceived concepts, overcome creative block, and become part of the new avant-garde. Pablo Picasso The Interaction Between Collectors & Exhibitions, 1899-1939 Enrique Mallen This book explores the interaction between collectors, dealers and exhibitions in Pablo Picasso’s entire career. The former two often played a determining role in which artworks were included in expositions as well as their availability and value in the art market. The term collector/dealer must often be used in combination since the distinction between both is often unclear; Heinz Berggruen, for instance, identified himself primarily as a collector, although he also sold quite a few Picassos through his Paris gallery. On the whole, however, dealers bought more often than collectors; and they bought works by artists they were already involved with. While some dealers were above all professional gallery owners; most were mainly collectors who sporadically sold items from their collection. Picasso’s first known dealer was Père Manyach. As his representative, Manyach went about setting up exhibitions of his works at galleries in the French capital. Picasso’s first major exhibition took place in 1901 at Vollards. Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler and Léonce Rosenberg came in after Vollard lost interest during the Cubist period, as they had a manifest preference for the new style. Like Vollard, later dealers often preferred the more conventional Neoclassical phase in Picasso. This was the case with Léonce’s brother, Paul Rosenberg. The book is organized chronologically and discusses the interaction between Picasso’s collectors, dealers and exhibitions as they take place. The Telling Image Shapes of Changing Times Lois Farfel Stark Seeing the World Through Shape How do humans make sense of the world? In answer to this timeless question, award winning documentary filmmaker, Lois Farfel Stark, takes the reader on a remarkable journey from tribal ceremonies in Liberia and the pyramids in Egypt, to the gravitydefying architecture of modern China. Drawing on her experience as a global explorer, Stark unveils a crucial, hidden key to understanding the universe: Shape itself. Art Art in Battle Dag Solhjell, Erik Tonning, James Van Dyke, Eirik Vassenden, Karin Hindsbo, Line Daatland, Terje Emberland, Matthew Feldman, Christian Fuhrmeister, Anita Kongssund, Gregory Maertz Edited by Erik Tonning Associate editor Frode Sandvik The exhibition 'ART IN BATTLE' deals with battles over art initiated by Nazi policies and European conquests on several arenas. Expounding the problems of the overfamiliar dichotomy of “Degenerate“ versus “Great German“ art, it examines propaganda exhibitions in occupied Norway as well as hitherto unseen art by soldiers stationed in Norway. This exceptional catalogue both documents this ground-breaking show and assembles leading experts on the history and ideology of Nazi cultural campaigns in both Germany and Norway to initiate a fresh discussion of the relationships between centre and periphery within the artworlds of the Third Reich. Beyond historical re-assessment, this project also asks more pressingly: How do we encounter these battles over art today? PB 9783838210148 £74.00 May 2017 Ibidem Press/Ibidem-Verlag 256 pages

Emily Carr in England Kathryn Bridge In 1899, at age 27, Emily Carr travelled to London to attend art school. She spent almost five years in England, and in this time her life completely changed. She returned to Canada in 1904 a mature woman, eyes widened from living abroad, chastened because of ill health and technically proficient as an artist. Historian Kathryn Bridge takes a fresh look at Emily Carr's time in England. She reveals new evidence that fills in many of the gaps in our knowledge of this important phase of Carr's life, and she documents important connections with people that the artist maintained throughout her life. She illustrates her findings with historical photographs and Carr's own sketches, paintings and "funny books", some never published before. Altogether, this book gives readers an entertaining second look into a pivotal time in the life of one of Canada's most famous artists. Three of Emily Carr's funny books are included in this volume: “A London Student Sojourn” in which Carr makes fun of life in Mrs Dodd's Guest House, where she stayed while attending the Westminster School of Art. “Kendal & I”, recalling the day she and her friend Hannah Kendall attempted in vain to watch the funeral procession of Queen Victoria. “The Olsson Student” offers a comical look at a painting excursion into the woods during her art-school days in St Ives, Cornwall.

Frozen Lives Karl and Anna Kuerner, Andrew Wyeth's Iconic Couple LuLynne Streeter To their children, Karl and Anna were "ordinary" people. To the rest of the world they were the extraordinary faces immortalized by Andrew Wyeth. Their story shows they were also far more complicated. Reflecting unprecedented access granted to the author by the Kuerner family, this compellingly readable book sheds light on the complex impacts the Kuerners had on Andrew Wyeth. Even as a young boy growing up in Pennsylvania's rural Brandywine Valley, he was fascinated by his intriguing neighbors, and they would be a major source of Wyeth's inspiration for more than seventy years. Karl Kuerner, hardened by poverty and his service in the German Army during World War I, faced demons of anger and frustration. Anna had her own battles, sometimes wandering the farm muttering to herself in German, between periods in the insane asylum. Included are family photos as well as color images of some of the major Wyeth paintings that the Kuerners and their farmscape inspired. The Hopper Managing editor Jenna Gersie Edited by Rose Alexandre-Leach, Anna Mullen, James Crews The Hopper is a lively environmental literary magazine, along with stunning visual art, from Green Writers Press that strives towards an invigorated understanding of nature's place in human life. The annual publication in a series is part of a new phase in nature writing that seeks to include a modern consciousness in narratives of place. When used for cider making, a hopper is a wooden or metal box that collects fruits before they are funnelled down through a chute to the crusher. In old Vermont towns, it was common for the community of growers to share one cider press instead of each farmer purchasing and maintaining his or her own. Come fall, people would cart their apples or pears to the farm that kept the mill, and into the hopper their fruits would go -often mixing with the products of a neighbouring grower. The Hopper believes that in order to refashion our lives to accommodate the knowledge we have of our environmental crisis, we have a lot of cultural heavy lifting to do. To reacquaint ourselves meaningfully with the natural world we have to turn our interpretive, inquisitive, and inspired faculties upon it. Through what we publish and the communities we encourage, The Hopper seeks to be a leader in this cultural recentring and can be used for environmental education and discussion. Light Colour Line -- Perceiving the Mediterranean Conflicting Narratives & Ritual Dynamics Edited by Thomas Dittelbach, Agnes Sebestyen "The light, the colour, the horizon line are parameters for the perception of the Mediterranean. The key issue is how we can connect all the specific ways of perception which each of us necessarily has of the Mediterranean. All the different convergences need to reflect themselves and reverberate in the narratives, the rituals, the performances and oral traditions of our perception of one another. Perceiving the Mediterranean means to pursue a dialectical process in discovering the otherness of our counterparts at the other edge of the horizon which is not simply an aesthetic line. Using narrative forms of representation, literary, filmic and photographic media require modes of perceiving the Mediterranean that in comparison with perceived reality reveal fractures and contradictions – conflicting narratives. This book tries to offer different ways, topics and interdisciplinary methods, from medieval to recent times, to drive forward a mutual communication on Mediterranean issues." No Idle Hands The Myths & Meanings of Tramp Art Laura M Addison Tramp art describes a particular type of wood carving practiced in the United States and Europe between the 1880s and 1940s in which discarded cigar boxes and fruit crates were notched and layered to make a variety of domestic objects. These were primarily boxes and frames in addition to small private altars, crosses, wall pockets, clock cases, plant stands, and even furniture. Whittling objects such as chains and ball-in-cage whimsies was a common hobby -- including among rail-riding “hobos” -- and for many years “tramp art” was believed to have been made by these itinerants as well. Although this notion has been widely dispelled, the name has stuck. In recent years efforts have been made to identify makers by name and reveal their stories. While some examples of tramp art may be attributed to itinerants, this carving style was more commonly a practice of working-class men creating functional objects for their households. The book presents over one hundred and fifty tramp art objects collected mainly from the United States and also including pieces from France, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil -- demonstrating the far reach this art form has had. It includes works by contemporary artists, thus establishing tramp art as an ongoing folk art form rather than a vestige of the past. The pieces reproduced here reveal an artistic and intricate sensibility applied to each handcrafted piece. Essays consider assumptions about tramp art related to class, quality, and the anonymity of its makers and examine this practice through the lens of home and family while tracing its relationship to the tobacco industry. Surrealism & the Occult Nadia Choucha Many people associate Surrealism with politics, but it was also permeated by occult ideas, a fact often overlooked by art historians. This occult influence goes beyond general themes to the movement’s very heart. The antinomian stance of Surrealism can be traced directly to the influence of radical nineteenth century magi such as Eliphas Lévi, whose Dogma and Ritual of High Magic was widely read by Surrealism’s ideologues. Amongst these we find its progenitor André Breton. The book shows how many Surrealists and their predecessors were steeped in magical ideas: Kandinsky, with his involvement with Theosophy, the sorcery of Salvador Dali; the alchemy of Pablo Picasso and the shamanism of Max Ernst and Leonora Carrington. Surrealism did not establish itself in Britain until the 1930s but a select few felt something in the air. Almost ten years before the Surrealist experiments with automatic drawing, an obscure English artist, Austin Osman Spare had perfected the technique. Navajo Weavings with Ceremonial Themes A Historical Overview of a Secular Art Form Rebecca M. Valette, Jean-Paul Valette Featuring more than 500 photos and maps, this is the first comprehensive, research-based history of Navajo weavings with imagery inspired by tribal sacred practices. These Yei, Yeibichai, and sandpainting textiles have been the most sought after by collectors and the least studied by scholars. In spite of their iconography, they never served a ceremonial function. They were created by Navajo women at the instigation of Anglo traders, for sale to wealthy collectors willing to pay premium prices for their perceived spiritual symbolism. This book describes the historical and artistic development of the genre from its controversial emergence around 1900, to the 1920-1940 period of intense creativity, and concluding with the contemporary search for innovative patterns. Never-before-published weavings, detailed annotations, and an extensive bibliography make this an invaluable reference for scholars and collectors, and a fascinating exploration for all who are interested in the Southwest and its native cultures. American Interests in the Holy Land Revealed in Early Photographs Lenny Ben-David Although Jewish life in the Holy Land reawakened during the 19th century, photographs of Jews in Palestine and the life they lived there are scarce. Collecting photographs from the archives of the the Library of Congress, the Ottoman Imperial Archives, the New York Public Library, libraries in universities and churches around the world, and in families' albums, Lenny Ben-David provides a unique and visual history of the American fascination and dedication to a Jewish national home in the Holy Land. Photo essays include fascinating stories such as why Lincoln wanted to visit Jerusalem, how the U.S. Navy saved the Jews of Palestine in 1915, why the Chief Rabbi of Palestine visited the White House in 1924, why there was a Ferris wheel on the Holy Mount Zion, where did Mark Twain stay in Jerusalem, and much more.

Brooklyn's Sweet Ruin Relics and Stories of the Domino Sugar Refinery Paul Raphaelson Brooklyn's Domino Sugar Refinery, once the largest in the world, shut down in 2004 after a long struggle. Most New Yorkers know it only as an icon on the landscape, multiplied on T-shirts and skateboard graphics. Paul Raphaelson, known internationally for his formally intricate urban landscape photographs, was given access to every square foot of the refinery weeks before its demolition. Raphaelson spent weeks speaking with former Domino workers to hear first-hand the refinery's more personal stories. He also assembled a world-class team of contributors: Pulitzer Prize–winning photography editor Stella Kramer, architectural historian Matthew Postal, and art director Christopher Truch. The result is a beautiful, complex, thrilling mashup of art, document, industrial history, and Brooklyn visual culture. Strap on your hard hat and headlamp, and wander inside for a closer look. Butch Not Like the Other Girls SD Holman This is a photographic exploration of the liminal spaces occupied by female masculinity in contemporary communities. Its first incarnation exhibited as a public art project in transit shelters around Vancouver in March-April 2013, with a simultaneous gallery show at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (the Cultch). According to Cultch administrators, the opening night (which attracted over 500 attendees and spilled out into the street for half a block) was the largest visual art opening in their 35-year history. The project caused an internet sensation, generating thousands of posts and shares on social media, blog posts as far away as Germany and Denmark, and interest for further exhibitions across Canada and the United States. This project delineates Butch as an inclusive site of resistance to limitations on the way women, gender, and sexuality are still defined. The images honour the beauty, power, and diversity of women who transgress the gender binary, interspersed with text written by the photographic subjects themselves. The transversal dialectic of female masculinity is celebrated here — unapologetic and undiluted. The author positions Butch as intrinsically queer. They explore the complex and contradictory natures of butch, “glorying in our mercurial and perhaps sometimes confusing natures.” Butch not only forces a reassessment of the body and the queer subject, it dismantles socialized, roledefined, gender appropriate behaviour. The queer cultures in which Butch is situated are constantly changing, and the author captures a diverse range of portrayals that celebrate and reflect butch identities. In the context of transgender movements, intersex activism, and genderqueer dialogues, a project like Butch on picturing and mirroring butch finds an important place. Jewish Treasures of the Caribbean The Legacy of Judaism in the New World Wyatt Gallery, Stanley Mirvis, Jonathan D. Sarna This photographic essay highlights the little-known history of the first Jewish communities established in the New World dating to the 1600s. Award-winning photographer Wyatt Gallery documents the oldest synagogues and cemeteries on Barbados, Curacao, Jamaica, St. Thomas, St. Eustatius, and Suriname through his singular style of photos with histories written by Stanley Mirvis. The enclaves, formed by Sephardic Jews who fled the Catholic Inquisition, became so influential that they helped fuel the success of the American Revolution and partially finance the first synagogues in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. Once home to thousands, today these historic communities are rapidly dwindling and could soon disappear. Only five historic synagogues remain in use, and many of the cemeteries have been damaged or lost to natural disasters, vandalism, and pollution. These photographs bear witness to the legacy of New World Judaism and provide a record for future generations. HB 9780764350955 £57.50 December 2016 Schiffer Publishing 240 pages 233 colour photos

Searching for Mary Schäffer Women Wilderness Photography Colleen Skidmore Mary Schäffer was a photographer, writer, botanical painter, and mapmaker from Philadelphia, well known for her travels in the Canadian Rockies and Japan at the turn of the twentieth century. Colleen Skidmore takes up Schäffer's own resonant themes--women and wilderness, travel and science -- to ask new questions, tell new stories, and reassess the persona of Mary Schäffer imagined in more recent times. Public and private archival collections in the United States and Canada set the stage for this engrossing exploration of Schäffer's creative, collaborative, and competitive enterprise amid the cultural complexities of Philadelphia's science and photography communities, and the scientific, tourist, and Indigenous societies of the Rocky Mountains of Canada. "In this impressive book, Colleen Skidmore uses her considerable skills as a social historian of photography to shed new light on the remarkable life of Mary Schäffer. She knows the stories, the characters, and presents a social history that is fresh and convincing. Skidmore's conclusion is brilliant and will certainly serve as a catalyst for further research and study of Mary Schäffer." World of Urban Decay 2 Martin ten Bouwhuijs When exploring the remains of forgotten buildings and abandoned lots in Eastern and Western Europe, a sign with “Trespassers will be prosecuted!” is usually what you will find outside. Imposing, seemingly lifeless structures -- some abandoned for 25 years -- including churches, mortuaries, factories, hospitals, swimming pools, and more, become reanimated in this series of arresting, sensually provocative images. On many buildings, unaffected by human interference for years, only beautiful, natural decay can be seen: moss growing on mattresses and cars, wallpaper peeling, and complete floors -- beds, pianos, and all -- having completely collapsed. These images are the results of daring photographic escapades, out of which is born a new appreciation for the architecture and the awe-inspiring grandeur of far-gone days. Surreal angles, from bottoms of stairwells in vacant sanatoria, and in an unsupervised Swedish junkyard, bring the photography to life and keep the interest in this urban expedition at a thrilling peak. Blade King of Graffiti Blade, Chris Pape BLADE has already told his life story through graffiti. Now, over forty years into his career and armed with an incredible memory, BLADE sits down with Chris Pape to reflect on growing up in the Bronx in the turbulent 1970s, and recounts the highs and lows of his storied career, holding nothing back. BLADE is considered "The King of Graffiti" because, by 1980, after painting 5,000 wildly creative trains, he stopped counting. This book parallels the New York graffiti movement almost from its inception, moving through its glory years in the mid-1970s, when BLADE earned his title, and ending in the global art scene, where he remains a major presence. BLADE helped New York graffiti become internationally famous by making it look fun, and, for reasons of quantity, quality, and, perhaps above all, for sheer spirit, BLADE may very well be the most popular graffiti artist with his peers. From the Platform: Subway Graffiti, 1983-1989 Paul Cavalieri See the New York City transit system at a time the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has tried hard to forget. In the early '80s, graffiti writer Paul Cavalieri, who writes "CAVS," was drawn to the colorful tags on trains. He started learning train schedules so he could snap works by many writers of the time. This is a compilation of subway graffiti from 1983 to 1989, when the MTA announced that its fleet was entirely graffiti-free. More than 325 color photos capture everything from motion-bombed train interiors riddled with pilot marker tags to epic works covering whole exteriors, top to bottom. Artists tell their tales of adventure throughout and reminisce about working on live third rails, navigating the complex subway system to find their works, and witnessing graffiti's gradual disappearance from the trains. Jeans of the Old West: A History Michael Harris The still popular blue jeans have their origins in the Old West frontier of San Francisco in the late 1800s. Gathered from collections around the world, here are never-before-seen pictures of antique Miners denim worn in the frontier communities of Nevada and California, including Levi denim that is over 120 years old. Over a dozen other brands that used this strong, durable fabric, and helped make blue jeans what they are today include Greenbaum Brothers, Neustadter Brothers, S R Krouse, A B Elfelt & Co, Heynemann & Co, Harman Adams, W & I Steinhart & Co, Toklas, Brown, and others. To avoid patent infringements, these other, little-known brands designed jeans that found a way around the rivet patent of Levi Strauss. Installation Art Between Image & Stage Anne Ring Petersen This book explores how installation art developed into an interdisciplinary genre in the 1960s, and how its special intertwinement of the visual and the performative has acted as a catalyst for the generation of new artistic phenomena. It investigates how it became one of today's most widely used art forms, increasingly expanding into consumer, popular and urban cultures, where the installations' often spectacular appearances ensure that they fit into contemporary demands for sense-provoking and immersive cultural experiences. Making an important contribution to the development of the critical and theoretical discourse on installation art, Ring Petersen addresses a series of basic questions: What is an installation? What techniques does it employ? How does installation art affect its viewers? How can we explain the rise of installation art in a cultural-historical perspective? Answers to these questions are pursued through analyses of installation art's spatial, temporal and discursive aspects as well as its reception aesthetics and cultural-historical contexts, and through analyses of a large number of works from a variety of sub-genres, including performance installations, video installations, installational exhibitions and recent use of installation in commercial contexts, including by artists such as Bruce Nauman, Olafur Eliasson, Mona Hatoum, Pipilotti Rist, Ilya Kabakov, Superflex, Thomas Hirschhorn, Carsten Höller, Terike Haapoja and ART + COM. Remembering Miss O'Keeffe Stories from Abiquiu Margaret Wood In 1977, Margaret Wood was a twenty-four-year-old living an ordinary life in Lincoln, Nebraska. That year, her life changed as she came to Abiquiu, a remote village in northern New Mexico, where she began a five-year stay as companion and caretaker to then eighty-nine year old Georgia O'Keeffe. There were no sign posts in the village in those years, and few markers for a young woman managing the complex role as companion to a woman of O'Keeffe's stature who nonetheless was now dependent on others to maintain the independent life she had cultivated so fiercely. Wood and O'Keeffe often walked the red hills of Ghost Ranch in early evenings, the place where the artist experienced true freedom. The artist had a reputation of living a secluded life, but in fact enjoyed welcoming a host of visitors to her home. Wood shares anecdotes about these social exchanges, along with a treasure trove of stories intimately shared. When Wood's father -- the photographer Myron Wood -- came to visit, he asked for and received permission to photograph O'Keeffe. A dozen of these historic images, published a decade later in the seminal publication, O'Keeffe's Abiquiu, are reproduced to complement Margaret Wood's quiet insights of life spent with O'Keeffe. Imposing, seemingly lifeless structures -- some abandoned for over 25 years -- including churches, mortuaries, factories, hospitals, swimming pools, and more, become reanimated in this series of arresting, sensually provocative images. On many buildings, unaffected by human interference for years, only beautiful, natural decay can be seen: moss growing on mattresses and cars, wallpaper peeling, and complete floors -- beds, pianos, and all -- having completely collapsed. These images are the results of daring photographic escapades, out of which is born a new appreciation for the beautiful architecture and the awe-inspiring grandeur of far-gone days. Abandoned NYC Will Ellis Every city has its ghosts. From Manhattan and Brooklyn's trendiest neighbourhoods to the farflung edges of the outer boroughs, Ellis captures the lost and lonely corners of the United States' most populous city. Step inside the New York you never knew, with 200 eerie images of urban decay, through crumbling institutions, defunct military posts, abandoned factories, railroads, schools, and waterways. Uncover the forgotten history behind New York's most incredible abandoned spaces, and witness its seldom seen and rapidly disappearing landscape. Explore the ruins of the Harlem Renaissance, sift through the artefacts of massive squatter colonies, and find out how the past is literally washing up on the shores of a Brooklyn beach called Dead Horse Bay. This book is for anyone who's ever wondered what's behind the "No Trespassing" sign. HB 9780764347610 £33.50 January 2015 Schiffer Publishing 160 pages 215 colour photos
100 UK Graffiti Artists Frank Malt Simply opening these covers commits you to being dazzled by 100 of the UK's top "writers" and street artists, immersing yourself in the styles, past and present, which make UK street art great. Upon its arrival in the UK from New York in the 1980s, graffiti rapidly spread across the island, infecting the youth like a stylistic virus. Out of the early days came names that would become part of UK writing legend, such as Mode2, Zaki Dee 163, Choci Roc, Goldie, and Robbo. Alongside works by these pioneers, we sweep across the whole of the UK, taking in Scotland and Wales, running through the nineties and right up to the modern day when more advanced, technical graffiti, wheat pasting, and stenciling are the new media on the street. This collection includes works by Aroe, Skore, Xens and Kem, Mef, and more. Guiding us through this review is Steam 156, who was there at the start and is still as passionate as ever. This is a must-have collection for graffiti writers and fans around the world. HB 9780764341960 £42.99 October 2012 Schiffer Publishing 222 pages 810 colour photos
