Forthcoming Titles Apollo Program Development Plan Edited by Robert Godwin It has been said that the Apollo Program was the greatest human achievement since the construction of the pyramids in Egypt. It was certainly one of the greatest achievements of modern times. But how was this miracle accomplished? Superficially, Apollo was the culmination of less than a decade of work by the greatest scientific and engineering minds anywhere in the world, but it was also an astonishing logistical and management achievement. Before President Kennedy was elected to office, military planners on both sides of the Cold War were convinced that the moon might represent the ultimate safe haven for military assets. If an enemy was to launch a first strike, whoever controlled the moon would always have the last word. With the goal of ensuring that safeguard, the US Army and the US Air Force began making plans for going to the moon long before NASA was even created. However, President Eisenhower chose to put America’s space program in the hands of a civilian agency and the military moon program ended. Three years later, when President Kennedy announced his nation’s goal of landing men on the moon, the sheer scope of the task required more than just scientists and engineers, it required men and women who were used to planning on a scale rarely seen outside of military conflict. It would also require the requisitioning of many of those old military assets, from ships, to tracking systems, to contractors. USAF Four Star General Samuel C Phillips would sit astride of the colossal program named Apollo and with the aid of nearly half a million of his fellow citizens would achieve the seemingly impossible. This book contains the entire plan, as it was summarised for a very limited number of people who were highly placed in the organisational structure. This rarely seen document is reproduced here in its entirety and spells out how the greatest logistical program of the 20th century was achieved.

About the Author: Robert Godwin is the author and editor of dozens of books about space flight and science fiction. He produced the first ever virtual reality panoramas of the Apollo lunar surface photography and the first multi-camera move of the Apollo 11 Moonwalk. He was the Space Curator at the Canadian Air Space Museum in Toronto and he co-produced the movie 2001: The Science of Futures Past. Saturn V America's Rocket to the Moon Eugen Reichl Without the mighty Saturn V rocket, the Apollo 11 moon landing would not have been possible in July 1969. Even today, nearly fifty years later, it remains by far the largest and most powerful rocket ever used. Equipped with computers that are easily surpassed today by any mobile phone, the Saturn V was an unprecedented technical achievement. This book, part of the "America in Space" series, tells the gripping story of the development and creation of the Saturn V in concise, detailed text, and features numerous high-quality color images, technical drawings, and specification/dimension charts. As well as a detailed look at the Saturn V's design and construction, all thirty-two Apollo missions are discussed, including the later Skylab and Apollo– Soyuz Test Project.

The Soviet Space Program First Steps: 1941–1953 Eberhard Rödel This concise history is the first book in a new series on the Soviet space program, and features many rare photographs, diagrams, and charts. When Soviet rocket experts examined the first Nazi V-2s in early 1945, they immediately realized that their own technology was years behind what the Germans had developed. The dropping of the two American atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 made the path forward clear: the development of a Soviet atomic bomb, and a suitable missile to carry it. This story begins with the Soviet's pre- and early war developments in rocket technology, then covers the discovery and study of the V-2s at Peenemünde, Germany. The Soviets assembled remaining V-2 rockets from existing parts and their mode of operation was studied. Developments in the Soviet R and G series missiles in the early 1950s are discussed in detail, as is the development for the peaceful use of Soviet rocket technology in space. Humanity and The Universe I, Humanity Jeffrey Bennett Story Time From Space Official Selection Part of a set of books launched to the International Space Station through NASA's Story Time from Space program, read aloud by astronauts for children around the world Written in the first person with the viewpoint of a narrator who represents the human race throughout history, I, Humanity tells the story of what we now know about the universe and how we learned it. It begins with the ancient view of a small, flat Earth, and page-by-page shows how we've gradually learned about our planet, its orbit, and its place in the vast universe. The book is designed to work on three different levels: education, perspective, and inspiration. The educational aspect comes in the factual content of the story, the perspective element involves enabling children learn to see themselves and our planet in a new light, and the inspirational component comes in helping children dream of how they can help make the world a better place.

About the Author: Jeffrey Bennett is an astrophysicist and educator who proposed the idea for and helped develop the Voyage Scale Model Solar System -- the first science-oriented exhibit approved for permanent installation on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Space Exploration Project Apollo The Early Years, 1961-1967 Eugen Reichl In May 1961, American president John F Kennedy committed the nation to carrying out a manned landing on the moon before the end of the decade. This volume covers the early years of the Apollo program (1960-1967), still the most significant space effort in the history of mankind. In a very short time, NASA developed the mighty Saturn rockets, the Apollo spacecraft, and the lunar lander. This breath-taking development came at a cost, however, as in 1967 astronauts Virgil Grissom, Roger Chaffee, and Edward White lost their lives during a test. Ten months after the catastrophe, however, the Saturn V, America’s moon rocket, made its triumphal unmanned maiden flight. After that, just twenty more months would pass before man set foot on another celestial body for the first time. HB 9780764351747 £17.50 September 2016 Schiffer Publishing 144 pages

Project Apollo The Moon Landings, 1968–1972 Eugen Reichl The moon landing remains the most astonishing and impressive accomplishment of manned space travel to this day. In July 1969, just eight years after President John F. Kennedy announced the bold plan, the first astronaut set foot on another celestial body. While Project Apollo: The Early Years covered the exciting developments from the first project drawings to the unmanned first flight of the mighty Saturn V, this book covers the later years of the Apollo era, in all its fascinating detail, including the test flights in Earth's orbit; the first orbits of the moon; the legendary Apollo 11 mission; the drama of Apollo 13; and Apollo 17, the last manned moon flight in 1972. Experience this era through exciting accounts, radio transcripts, and impressive photographs and diagrams. HB 9780764353758 £17.50 September 2017 Schiffer Publishing 144 pages

Project Gemini America in Space Series Eugen Reichl In just two-and-a-half years, beginning in 1964, two unmanned and ten manned flights took place in the Gemini program. This program was the turning point in the space race with the USSR; from then on the Americans took the lead. Flights lasting two weeks, into the Van Allen Belt, the first extravehicular activities, rendezvous maneuvers and docking with other spacecraft—all of this was achieved by Gemini, paving the way for the more demanding moon landing program. It was not all success, however. Like almost every significant undertaking, Project Gemini also had its dramas and tragedies. All Project Gemini missions are discussed, including details on allcraft and the astronauts involved. Superb color, archival images, cutaways and plans are also included.

Reviews: “…these are the most detailed accounts I know of these pioneering programmes, bringing back memories of long ago for those of us old enough, providing inspiration for those not.” - Ray Ward, Popular Astronomy, Dec 2016 HB 9780764350702 £17.50 February 2016 Schiffer Publishing 144 pages

Project Mercury America in Space Series Eugen Reichl Project Mercury was America's entry into the manned spaceflight program. When the program began in 1958, the Soviet Union was far ahead of the US in the race for supremacy in space. With immense effort, and in record time, NASA, the newly created spaceflight organization, developed a space transport system with orbital capsule and booster rockets. They used it to send Alan Shepard on a first suborbital "jump" into space in May 1961, and in February 1962 to make John Glenn the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. Nevertheless, the Americans were beaten by the Soviets in the race to put the first man into space. Project Mercury was, however, the foundation for NASA's later success in the race to the moon. All Project Mercury missions are discussed, including details on all craft and the astronauts involved. Superb color, archival images, cutaways and plans are also included.

Skylab 3 The NASA Mission Reports Dwight Steven-Boniecki Book & DVD. With the successful repair of the Skylab workshop by Pete Conrad’s Skylab 2 crew the stage was now set for his fellow Apollo 12 moon walker Alan Bean to lead a full scientific mission to the giant space station. Bean was to be accompanied by two of the next generation of astronauts, Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma. The crew were launched on a Saturn IB on 28 July 1973 for a mission which would last for just short of two months. This would be by far the longest duration mission ever attempted by the United States. Just as the previous mission had required space walks, Skylab 3 would also see the crew venture outside on three separate occasions. The experience gained from these early repair missions would be of incalculable value to the future of manned space exploration. Having secured the station and completed the repairs begun by Conrad’s crew, Bean, Lousma and Garriott conducted an intensive series of experiments on themselves and on behalf of students back on Earth. They also began the serious study of our home planet through the Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package and undertook meaningful studies of the Sun using the Apollo Telescope Mount. Many of the paradigms for life aboard the International Space Station began right here with the flight of Skylab 3. Monitoring the crew’s reaction to long duration exposure to micro-gravity, watching the effect on small organisms, carefully studying the earth’s ecosphere, looking out into deep space with the benefit of “clear skies” and generally learning whether humanity could withstand the rigors of long missions away from the Earth. In this book you will discover everything from the minutiae of complex experiments to the human face of some of the earliest true space residents. Once again the enormous Skylab workshop would provide them with a home. PB 9781926592282 £25.95 December 2016 Apogee Books 354 pages illus

Skylab 4 The NASA Mission Reports Dwight Steven-Boniecki Book & DVD. By the end of 1973 the United States’ was firmly entrenched in its long-term space station program. The Skylab Orbital Workshop had managed to survive its birthing pains and had already successfully carried two crews in low earth orbit when Apollo astronauts Gerald Carr, William Pogue and Ed Gibson strapped themselves atop one of the remaining Saturn IB super boosters. Destined to be the second-to-last crew to fly in the remarkable Apollo spacecraft the three men would spend an unprecedented 84 days in space. Although none of them had any previous spaceflight experience they had all trained for many years in hopes of a trip to the moon, only to find themselves slated to set new long-duration records for spaceflight. Over almost three months Carr, Pogue and Gibson conducted an inordinate amount of experiments inside the cavernous Skylab space station. They studied the sun in ways never before achieved, monitoring solar flares and coronal mass ejections from our home star. They also began the first real work of earth observation. The crew of Skylab 4 proved that it was possible for humans to live in space for extended periods without too many adverse effects. They worked out the first stringent space exercise regimens to help them to maintain their health and they conducted multiple spacewalks. Without a doubt, the crew of Skylab 4 pioneered the way forward in space station research and their efforts would light the path for the International Space Station. In this book you will find the remarkable details of NASA’s final early space station experiment through the original documents published at the time of the mission, including the mission debriefing telling the story in the crew’s own words. Included with this book is a DVD featuring launch video of the Skylab 4 mission, rare audio of the re-entry of Skylab with a Skylab slideshow, Skylab 4 Status Report, Skylab 4 Inflight Press Conference, The Legacy of Skylab and more! Biographies The Father of Canadian Astronautics The Life of Dr Philip A Lapp, OC Edited by Peter R Frise, Robert Godwin On 4 October 1957 the science of astronautics was thrust into the limelight when the first artificial satellite went into orbit around the Earth. Politicians around the world scrambled to catch up and understand the significance of this enormous achievement. At that time most of Canada's top engineers were employed by such stalwart companies as De Havilland, Canadair and A V Roe Aircraft. However, the flight of Sputnik opened up a frontier which required a new breed of visionary missile-men. Men such as Phil Lapp. Working from within De Havilland's newly formed missile division, Lapp immediately recognised the new world that was opening up in Sputnik's wake. Within a few weeks of that momentous event he organised a meeting of his fellow engineers to inaugurate a "Canadian Astronautical Society" at the De Havilland factory in Downsview Ontario. This meeting heralded the birth of Canada's space program. This book takes the reader on a journey from Dr Lapp's humble beginnings in Toronto to the end of his life when he earned Canada's highest civilian award, the Order of Canada. Related in his own words he explains what led to Canada becoming one of the most respected forces in the world of astronautics. From the Avro Arrow, the Alouette Satellite, the birth of Direct- TV, to the Canadarm and Radarsat, Phil Lapp's story is an extraordinary tale of a unique man working in a historic time, meticulously related from his own uniquely Canadian perspective. William Leitch Presbyterian Scientist & The Concept of Rocket Space Eight 1854-1864 Robert Godwin In 2015 author Robert Godwin revealed the story of William Leitch an almost unknown Scottish/Canadian scientist who in 1861 suggested that rockets could be used for spaceflight because they obeyed Newtonian principles. In William Leitch Presbyterian Scientist and the Concept of Rocket Spaceflight 1854-64 Godwin reveals the life of this brilliant mind from the early Victorian era. In September 1861 Leitch wrote an essay called "A Journey Through Space" in which he proposed the idea that a rocket would be the most efficient way to travel outside the Earth's atmosphere. His idea would be forgotten and not be "rediscovered" for another three decades. Beginning from Leitch's humble birth on the Isle of Bute in western Scotland, this book takes you through his education alongside William Thomson, later the most famous scientist of the 19th century, through his many scientific lectures on everything from the mysteries of electricity to the viability of alien life on other planets, before concluding in Kingston Ontario where he struggled to convince Canada's first Prime Minister to try and establish a fair educational system for all Canadians. In this greatly expanded second edition Godwin dissects more than three dozen newly discovered essays by William Leitch in which he discusses some of the profound mysteries of all time. Babbage and his "analytical engine" and the significance of artificial intelligence; the special relationship between light and time and a connection to Albert Einstein; the need for a grand unifying theory to explain the universe; a remote possibility of a connection to Robert Goddard and a very definite connection to the flight of Apollo 11. The story of William Leitch shatters many modern preconceptions about the fragile truce between science and religion in the early 19th century and adds a new wrinkle in the history of space flight. Here Be Dragons The Rise of SpaceX & the Journey to Mars Stewart Money This is the story of SpaceX. In the pre-dawn hours of 22 May 2012, a conventional looking rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral on what was only its third flight. Yet it was carrying a spacecraft to conduct history's first commercial mission to the International Space Station, and along with it, America's best chance to restore its space-faring capability. The total taxpayer cost for developing the rocket and the spacecraft, including previous flights was $396 million, a fraction of the amount NASA had spent on any comparable project. For Elon Musk and SpaceX Exploration Technologies Corp, a company founded only a decade earlier, it was a stunning accomplishment, yet it was only one stop on a journey which leads all the way to Mars. From its earliest trials and near disaster on the remote Pacific atoll of Kwajalein to four successful missions to the International Space Station, this book vividly details the first era of SpaceX. Set against a national space program in complete disarray at the end of the Shuttle era, it is also the story of a unique partnership with NASA, one that holds the promise of a new era of space exploration. Live TV From Orbit Dwight Steven-Boniecki Book & DVD-ROM. The often overlooked missions of Skylab, ASTP and the Shuttle categorically receive the recognition they have long deserved. Live TV From Orbit presents the planning and development of the TV systems used on those flights and summarises the TV coverage during the respective missions. Engineers and planners involved with NASA, Westinghouse and RCA help complement the detailed analysis of just how much effort went into bringing some of the most important historical video from Earth Orbit to the everyday person's living-room. Using the internal memos and status reports as its foundation, this book digs deep to uncover the story which unfolded behind the cameras. Unlike the days of Apollo, NASA had to fight against the growing apathy of the general public, and despite this hurdle, managed to deliver many iconic moments in outer space with a glorious clarity which had never been seen before. Having set the benchmark high for the lunar missions, NASA planners had to push it higher to win the hearts and minds of potential viewers. Blogging the Moon The Once & Future Moon Collection Paul D Spudis Book & DVD. NASA has been in the news lately for reasons beyond the exciting discoveries of various and vast quantities of water on the Moon. Unfortunately, the long, drawn out repositioning of our national space program has brought the space community to loggerheads, leaving the future of the U.S. manned space program in jeopardy. The upheaval caused by fights over rocket designs and suppliers, and the "Eenie, meenie, minie, moe" formula being used to select our new space direction, has placed the U.S. space program in peril. For over two decades Paul Spudis has had a front row seat to the U.S. national space program and has written extensively about space policy and space science. His opinions and insights recently found a home on the Air and Space Magazine blog, The Once and Future Moon. Beginning with his reporting from India in October of 2008, Paul's easy to read essays have followed and reported on the growing upheaval in the space community and the battle being waged for the ideological control of and funding for space exploration, and the resulting chaos. In keeping with his call for a strong U.S. human space program, Paul Spudis outlines and explains the importance of creating a sustainable space program through the use of the Moon's resources to create new capabilities to live and work in space and move humanity off planet. These essays and reader comments are compiled in the book. The bonus DVD includes a slideshow of over 30 years of Dr Spudis' pictures researching our Moon, as well as Dr Spudis' in-depth presentation about the Moon's resources.

About the Author: Dwight Steven-Boniecki is the 2011 AWA Taylor Award-winning author of “Live TV From the Moon” who returns with a second and intensely re-searched analysis of NASA's work in developing TV for the post-Apollo missions. PB 9781926592299 £26.95 December 2016 Apogee Books 440 pages

Skylab 1 & 2 The NASA Mission Reports (Apogee Books Space Series) Dwight Steven-Boniecki The race to the moon was barely over when the United States suddenly found itself in a new competition; one to establish a permanent long-term human presence on the high frontier. The Soviet Union had given up on its aspirations to plant the Hammer and Sickle in the lunar dust when their gigantic lunar booster, the N-1, had failed for a third time. Instead, they had forged ahead in the field of long duration spaceflight, with their sturdy Salyut series of space stations. Having won the moon, NASA's senior management returned to the competition, this time with their own space station, the mighty Skylab Orbital Workshop. Taking full advantage of the massive lifting power of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the engineers in Huntsville and Houston turned the shell of a Saturn IVB into the largest pressurised and habitable volume to ever fly into space. But ambition comes at a price. No sooner had the enormous Saturn hauled its payload aloft than things began to go wrong. Designed to be powered by a pair of huge solar panelled wings the workshop arrived in orbit with one wing clipped. The first crew to board Skylab, veteran moonwalker Pete Conrad and his companions Joe Kerwin and Paul Weitz, suddenly found themselves having to unlearn their mission plans and hastily put together an audacious rescue, to save the multi-million dollar project. The mission of Skylab 2 was the forerunner of all of NASA's subsequent orbital repair missions. Conrad, Kerwin and Weitz proved to the world that astronauts could conduct long and ambitious repairs in space and go on to fulfill many of their original scientific objectives. They also established a new record for the longest time in space for a U.S. space mission, remaining in orbit for almost a month. This is the story of the beginning of the colonization of space. For space fans and engineers, a companion DVD is included that features spectacular video of Skylab from the NASA archives. PB 9781926592275 £24.95 August 2015 Apogee Books 244 pages
