Be Chief It’s a Choice, Not a Title Rick Miller Conventional wisdom about Chiefs and power is all wrong. It says Chiefs are special. Chiefs are chosen. Chiefs have titles. And only those at the top have the power to be Chief. But today, reports indicate that 7 in 10 workers are not giving 100% on the job. Why? Mostly, they feel powerless. Researchers estimate the cost of this lost productivity at over $500B annually. We need a new way to think about Chiefs and power, and we need new tools to create powerful organizations. To Rick Miller, being Chief has nothing to do with position or title. And power has nothing to do with authority or control. Rather, Rick defines a Chief as anyone who fully and enthusiastically connects what they do to who they are, personally and professionally. Rick defines power in terms of the clarity, energy, and impact we can all choose to build. Miller is a different kind of turnaround specialist who has led million- and billion-dollar organizations that have unlocked employee productivity, tripled growth rates, and delivered sustainable growth using a strategy to cultivate teams of powerful Chiefs. As a student-teacher and a player-coach Miller, shares strategies that work for Chiefs at all levels.

About the Author: Rick is a servant leader, a student-teacher, and a go-to Chief. He is also an experienced and trusted confidant, an author, a sought-after speaker, and an expert at driving sustainable growth. For over 30 years, Rick served as a successful business executive in roles including President and/or CEO in a Fortune 10, a Fortune 30, a startup, and a non-profit. In each case, he was recruited from the outside to turn around poor performance in difficult times. Rick Miller is a Chief not because of his many high-ranking titles, but because of his ability to bring out the best in others - and in himself - using the choices he developed in his Power Compass. Rick has been in demand for the past ten years as a confidential adviser to many of today’s most senior executives, and is extensively connected within the global business and leadership communities. Recruiting in the Age of Googlization When The Shift Hits Your Plan Ira S Wolfe No business function is being disrupted by technology and demographics as much as recruitment. Tried and true recruiting practices are no longer working. New job categories are emerging, traditional jobs are disappearing and employment technologies are advancing at an exponential pace. An evolving definition of work and acceleration in the automation of work is only intensifying the competition for qualified workers. And yet many companies continue to recruit and screen talent like it was still 1970. In Recruiting in the Age of Googlization, Ira S Wolfe exposes the realities of automation on the future of jobs and the rapid reconstruction of the concept of work. Wolfe illuminates with his down-to-earth writing style how exponential change will transform or eliminate most jobs and make many business models irrelevant or unrecognizable. Wolfe's examples read like science fiction jumping off the pages of everyday reality. His forecasts and solutions are simultaneously exciting and terrifying. It is within this new business environment that organizations must learn to recruit and retain talent. Whether you're responsible for Human Resources or management or the average worker or student wondering what's next for his or her career, Recruiting in the Age of Googlization is a thought provoking, compelling read. Recruiting in the Age of Googlization provides a blueprint for a recruitment process that works in any organization. The solution is built on a framework of best practices that will surely help organizations recruit, select, manage, and retain the talent they need. The book will inspire new ideas, spark pivotal conversations, and challenge existing assumptions about business and help lay out a game plan to make change work.

About the Author: Described as a ‘Millennial trapped in a Baby Boomer body’, Ira S. Wolfe has emerged as one of HR’s most visionary thinkers in managing the convergence of the tired, the wired, and technology. He is a prolific blogger, contributing writer, podcaster, and author. His first book The Perfect Labor Storm launched him onto the national stage which was followed by Geeks, Geezers, and Googlization. His 2016 TEDx Talk Make Change Work for You became the inspiration for his latest book Recruiting in the Age of Googlization: When the Shift Hits Your Plan. Business & Management After Action Review Continuous Improvement Made Easy Artie Mahal Master the After Action Review (AAR) to improve the outcome of any personal or professional activity. From the beginning of time, humans have survived and thrived by learning from their experiences – both good and bad – and then tweaked their actions for better results next time. This continual quest for improvement stems from the difference between “what was” and “what could be.” Even if we're not consciously aware of it, we're constantly seeking improvement in this very same way. If we turn to this analysis in a more intentional and methodical way, with an eye towards continuous improvement (CI), then next time around the outcomes can be more rewarding and desirable. After Action Review (AAR) is a continuous improvement approach for reflecting on the work of a group or team. Learn how to apply both informal and formal AAR approaches. Along with a complete walkthrough, the book includes resources and materials you can use in your work right now. For example, the Group Insights template will help you distinguish "likes" from "wishes," and the Planning Template will show you how to optimize the time spent during the AAR. Chapter 1 covers basic facilitation skills needed to conduct an AAR including active listening, questioning, information gathering and analysis, public speaking, presenting, intervening, and managing group dynamics. Chapter 2 explains the AAR in detail including its value proposition and frameworks. Chapter 3 explores the informal AAR and Chapter 4 the formal AAR.

About the Author: For two decades, Artie Mahal successfully led mission-critical programs at Mars, Incorporated. He has delivered Business Process Management services worldwide, and is a speaker at professional forums. He had served with three governors of New Jersey in various community programs, and was the President of the first Sikh Temple in New Jersey. Be Unstoppable No Excuses Tariku Bogale "We don’t usually know what we are born to do. We certainly also don’t know what kinds of obstacles we will face, or what forms they will take. When we understand how the world has been connected through history—through the movement of people, goods, languages, music, movies, and many other things—we see our world more clearly as a shared planet and a home for everyone. There is very little in life more important than acting quickly and with great decisiveness. Many people all over the world have dreams—big dreams or small dreams. To get there, we have to take risks. People who have studied business or been in the business world, like me, know that in business, one often discusses risk versus reward. Be Unstoppable is a golden nugget of wisdom, through the stories into which my life’s energy has flowed and emerged greater each time, that will bring you gold, in real money and in what is important in your life." Creating a Customer Service Mindset Jaquie Scammell Creating a customer service mindset is a book in three parts. It starts by looking at some of the best Australian businesses and their leaders with a customer service mindset. These organisations may not get as much street cred or exposure as Google, Amazon or Facebook, but they are leading the way when it comes to delivering superior customer service in the world. Next it looks at the future of work and the importance customer service and conscious leadership will have on the success of your organisation. The final part reveals the how you can instil a customer service mindset throughout your organisation by teaching them how to adopt a continuum of behaviours. The catch is that you, as a leader, have to adopt these behaviours, which will impact your employees’ performance, which in turn, impacts your customer interactions and loyalty, and then enhances your whole organisation. Hearing the Voice of the Customer Bill Inmon Increase the awareness of your customer’s behavior to survive and excel within your industry. One hundred years ago, the voice of the customer was easily and routinely heard by the shopkeeper. In small towns, the shopkeeper knew everyone. Today’s world has gotten much bigger and much more complex. No longer does the store owner personally know everyone who comes into the store. Yet there are three important abilities technologies offer that make it possible to listen to the voice of the customer today: The ability to acquire, store, and manage huge amounts of data; The ability to read and understand text in a computerized environment; The ability to visualize data. This book answers important questions such as: Where is the voice of the customer heard? How does the corporation find and capture the voice of the customer? How is the voice of the customer actually interpreted and understood? How do you cope with the volume of messages the customer is sending you? How do you separate noise from the important messages? How do you analyze the composite voice of the customer over thousands of customers? How do you reduce the voice of the customer to a visual format that is understood by management? How do you know when the message the customer is sending changes? After reading this book the reader will be able to manage, build, and operate a corporate infrastructure that listens to the voice of the customer.

About the Author: Bill Inmon -- the "father of data warehouse" -- has written 57 books published in nine languages. Bill's latest adventure is the building of technology known as textual disambiguation -- technology that reads raw text in a narrative format and allows the text to be placed in a conventional database so that it can be analysed by standard analytical technology, thereby creating unique business value for Big Data/unstructured data. Bill was named by ComputerWorld as one of the ten most influential people in the history of the computer profession. Bill lives in Castle Rock, Colorado. How to Successfully Implement Your Business Strategy Peter Mills Without clear direction, a productive working environment and an effective strategy implementation process, integrated with all aspects of the working organization, an organization’s strategy may not be delivered and the causes of failure will not be clear. Good strategy implementation is about effective leadership. Effective leadership is not only about setting direction but also creating a working environment that both enables and supports strategy implementation. This environment includes the organization’s structure (functions, roles and role relationships); its systems of work (policies, processes and information and communication technologies); and the application of effective managerial leadership practices. Each component provides the context for work and together they create the working environment that impacts all employees, including managers. To successfully implement a strategy, leaders must be able to: - Clearly define the strategy - Align the organization for success - Cascade and deploy the strategy to relevant employees - Monitor and assure implementation.

Motivational Marketing You Bet Its Personal!: How I Sold Goods in Millions to the Richest World Markets Shlomo Knoller This inspiring book, made of real-life study-cases, tells the often surprising story of the author's special way in successfully restructuring, managing, and expanding the international marketing activity of industrial companies in Israel, Europe and the United States. Besides, it reflects on the outstanding growth of lsrael's economy, which started in 1948 as a small developing country with barely half a million citizens and now boasts cutting-edge high-tech industries that worth billions of dollars export worldwide. The readers, especially those who are trying to follow Knoller's impressive example, will be equally thrilled and amused though also equipped with most useful tools for their own professional challenges. Shlomo Knoller was born in April 1934, to a Jewish family in Berlin. His grandfather owned textile stores in Berlin, but then two of the stores were ravished in a Nazi rally. This brought the man, who had previously fought for Germany in the First World War as an officer, to take his family to Israel, then Palestine Mandate, “till the storm blows over.” The entire family was saved from extinction due to this fortunate decision. The Knollers lived in Tel Aviv. Shlomo, the third generation, graduated from a Vocational High School, and did his regular army duty in the Nachal program, which combined military service with Kibbutz life. Most naturally, the author joined as a member Kibbutz Yiftach in Upper Galilee, and at age 23 he married Edna, a farmers' daughter from Yokne'am village, who became his life-partner for over sixty years. They have three daughters and nine grandchildren, and still work their land. A year after their marriage they left the kibbutz and moved to newly-built southern city of Ashdod, a famous sea town since biblical times, where Shlomo Knoller started as a maintenance worker at Rogosin Enterprise, and later ended as its CEO. The rest of his meteoric and absorbing career is depicted in this book. PB 9781941905180 £14.99 January 2018 Dekel Publishing House 178 pages

Data Management Blockchainopoly How Blockchain Changes the Rules of the Game Steve Hoberman Learn how blockchain works, where to use it within your organization, and how it will impact data management. Part I will explain will explain the concepts underlying blockchain. A precise and concise definition is provided, distinguishing blockchain from blockchain architecture. Variations of blockchain are explored based upon the concepts of purpose and scope. Now that you understand blockchain, where do you use it? The reason for building a blockchain application must include at least one of these five drivers: transparency, streamlining, privacy, permanence, or distribution. Usages based upon these five drivers are shown for finance, insurance, government, manufacturing and retail, utilities, healthcare, nonprofit, and media. Process diagrams will illustrate each usage through inputs, guides, enablers, and outputs. Also examined are the risks of applying these usages, such as cooperation, incentives, and change. Part III explores how blockchain will impact data management. The Data Management Body of Knowledge 2nd Edition (DAMA-DMBOK2) is an amazing book that defines the data management field along with the often complex relationships that exist between the various data management disciplines. Software Wasteland How the Application-Centric Mindset is Hobbling our Enterprises Dave McComb Know what’s causing application development waste so you can turn the tide. This is the book your Systems Integrator and your Application Software vendor don’t want you to read. Enterprise IT (Information Technology) is a $3.8 trillion per year industry worldwide. Most of it is waste. We've grown used to projects costing tens of millions or even billions of dollars, and routinely running over budget and schedule many times over. These overages in both time and money are almost all wasted resources. However, the waste is hard to see, after being so marbled through all the products, processes, and guiding principles. That is what this book is about. We must see, understand, and agree about the problem before we can take coordinated action to address it. The trajectory of this book is as follows: In Chapter 1, we explore how bad the current state is. The three industries that address software waste are discussed, including the legacy software industry, neo-legacy software industry, and legacy modernization industry. Examples of application waste are illustrated from both public and private sectors. In Chapter 2, we explore the economics of the software industry. Although the economic tradeoffs are changing at the speed of Moore’s Law, our approaches are not keeping pace. Learn how information systems really behave in terms of actual application development. In Chapter 3 we use “root cause analysis” to reveal the real contributors to this situation, which are dependency, redundancy, complexity, and application centricity. Chapter 4 recounts the many failed attempts we’ve made in the past to deal with information system complexity, including relational databases, ERP systems, enterprise data modeling, service oriented architectures, and APIs, Agile, data warehouse and business intelligence, outsourcing and offshoring, cloud, Software as a Service (SaaS), data lakes, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Chapter 5 dismantles seven fallacies that contribute to our remaining stuck. For example, the first fallacy is “We need detailed requirements or we won’t get what we want.” The quagmire is not affecting all sectors of the economy equally. Chapter 6 looks at how this is playing out in the government and private sectors, large and small companies, and various parts of the IT industry itself. Chapter 7 outlines some action you can take now to begin to extricate yourself, including a detailed assessment and defining metrics for measuring and preventing software development waste.
