The Queen & the Spymaster A Novel Based on the Story of Esther Sandra E. Rapoport The year is 475 BCE, and across the Persian Empire a civil war begins. The royal Edict of Destruction has given license for theft, kidnapping, and murder, prelude to annihilating an entire people - three million Persian souls. Persia is desperate for a hero. "The Queen & the Spymaster" tells the story of the unlikely champions of Ancient Persia, and of a thousand--year vendetta that presages modern historical events in Iran and Afghanistan. Our palace drama presents a fascinating and terrifying world-within-a-world, and takes place over the course of two decades in the Achaemenid or Persian dynasty. We read of the personal and political rivalries in the royal court of Persia between the king's vizier and an ambitious minister. Of two beautiful queens, one of whom dares to disobey the king and disappears without a trace, and of a second queen who is not who she pretends to be. And through it all, we read of a king who alternately appears foolish and fierce, pandering and paranoid, manipulative and murderous. The global backdrop for this fast-paced story of palace intrigue is the ancient Near East of the mid-fifth century BCE. At the time our story commences, the world powers - Babylonia, Assyria, Persia, and Greece have been engaged in a centuries-long battle for world domination. Readers are transported to the exotic fortress city of Susa, the imperial palace, and the royal harem, where truth wears a mask. Rapoport meticulously describes a royal court populated by an intricate shadow-world of spies and informants. A sinister brotherhood with orders to draw a target on the king's back. Rival cabinet ministers who command private armies. An orphaned girl with a gift for languages and an innate political intuition. A queen who, unbeknownst to all, is a secret agent. And the shrewd tactician who controls her. "The Queen & the Spymaster," a thrilling novel, tells the Esther story you never knew. PB 9781732495500 £21.99 March 2019 Penlight Publications 520 pages

Rabbi Twersky's teachings represent a rare synthesis of three intellectual approaches within the Torah world: the Chassidic tradition on which he was nurtured from childhood at home; the scholarly/academic approach which he mastered in Harvard University and Hebrew University; and the Lithuanian yeshivah approach which he internalized by studying weekly for decades with his father-in-law, Rabbi Joseph B. Was Yosef on the Spectrum? Understanding Joseph Through Torah, Midrash, and Classical Jewish Sources Samuel J. Levine Yosef's behaviors, interpersonal relationships, and personal development are often difficult to understand and seem to defy explanation. This book presents a coherent and cohesive reading of the well known Bible story that offers a plausible account of Yosef's behaviors, specifically those of an individual on the autism spectrum. Viewed through this lens, Yosef emerges as a more familiar and less enigmatic individual, exhibiting both strengths and weaknesses commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder.

Reviews: As he lays out his extraordinarily bold, profoundly thought-provoking hypothesis, Levine's deep love for and highly nuanced understanding of his subject leaps from every page. —George Rohr, Noted Philanthropist HB 9789655242997 £24.99 October 2018 Urim Publications 180 pages

What the Mystics Know Seven Pathways to Your Deeper Self Richard Rohr Drawing from the best and most poetic of Richard Rohr's essays from nearly a quarter of a century, each chapter in this new collection examines one of the seven core mystical truths. Organized according to the mystical paths that every worshiper must follow, Rohr identifies the despair of everyday life, promotes opportunities for change even in the face of pain, and encourages transforming one's deeper self into a beacon of light that aids in the metamorphosis of others. Illuminating these insights with reflections on Christian and Jewish scriptures while citing the greatest religious writers throughout the ages, Rohr offers an unparalleled window into the wisdom of the mystics in this succinct volume that represents the best of his vast library of writing. A Baptist Preacher's Buddhist Teacher How My Interfaith Journey with Daisaku Ikeda Made Me a Better Christian Lawrence Edward Carter Sr. In this soul-stirring memoir, Lawrence E. Carter Sr. shares his remarkable quest to experience King's "beloved community" and his surprising discovery that King's dream was being realized by the Japanese Buddhist philosopher Daisaku Ikeda. Coming of age on the cusp of the American Civil Rights Movement, Carter was personally mentored by Martin Luther King Jr. and followed in his footsteps -- first to get an advanced degree in theology and then to teach a new generation at King's alma mater, Morehouse College. Over the years, however, Carter was disheartened to see the radical cosmic vision at the heart of King's message gradually diluted. Then he encountered Ikeda, president of the lay Buddhist association Soka Gakkai International. Carter knew that King had been inspired by Ghandi, a Hindu, and now Ikeda, a Buddhist, was showing him how King's message of justice, equality, and the fundamental dignity of life could be carried to millions of people around the world. What ensued was not a conversion but a conversation -about the essential role of interfaith dialogue, the primacy of education, and the value of a living faith to realize King's dream of truly global cooperation.

Reviews: Carter's story should inspire and disturb all of us as it challenges our cherished and comforting assumptions, our tightly held claims and possessions, our glib tropes, including those about about home, race, religion, self. —Vincent L. Hell and Damnation A Sinner's Guide to Eternal Torment Marq de Villiers In Hell and Damnation , bestselling author Marq de Villiers takes readers on a journey into the strange richness of the human imaginings of hell, deep into time and across many faiths, back into early Egypt and the 5,000-year-old Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh. Lonely But Not Alone A Spiritual Autobiography Nathan Lopes Cardozo Lonely But Not Alone tells the highly unusual story of Dutch-Israeli Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo, a child of an intermarriage between a Christian woman and Jewish man who discovers Judaism in his teens and subsequently undergoes a ritual conversion. Weaving together his history and his novel approach to Judaism borne out of his unconventional experiences, Cardozo tackles the problems of religiosity, doubt, faith, and the holy land of Israel and offers his vision for an improved Judaism. This volume blends Cardozo's personal account, testimony by his mother about concealing his father's family during the Holocaust, seminal essays on Jewish thought, and an interview with the author.

Reviews: When the international community formally acknowledged the rights of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland after the First World War, it was implicitly understood that this connection emanated from nearly 3,000 years of Jewish law and tradition. Rabbi Cardozo eloquently reminds his readers of that very fundamental truth in a period when many in the world have unfortunately forgotten it. --Ambassador Dore Gold, former Israel ambassador to the United Nations on For the Love of Israel and the Jewish People HB 9789655241693 £22.99 January 2019 Urim Publications 250 pages

Reviews: “[The Encyclopedia of Jewish Values ] goes far beyond traditional rituals to encompass every action of our lives . . . . Rabbi Amsel's writing is clear and factual, his tone reserved and intellectual. He easily provides cogent arguments for all his views, seamlessly citing Rashi commentary and Torah scripture when needed in detailed, well-organized footnotes. King Doha Saraha's Advice to a King Traleg Kyabgon Whilst on the one hand, it is said that Mahamudra is a very advanced form of meditation, on the other, if one were already advanced one would not need any instructions. Mahamudra manuals often tend to explain everything step by step as if the reader does not know anything. Obviously then, they are meant for people like us. In the King Doha, Saraha gives a step by step account of the pitfalls a meditation practitioner can fall into and how to avoid them. With a background of practising extensively in the tantric tradition, he gives his reasons for considering the Mahamudra approach an appropriate path. Based on a commentary by Karma Trinleypa, Traleg Rinpoche gives a straightforward and clear explanation of Saraha's message to us as practitioners of Mahamudra.

Letter to a Friend Nagajuna's Classic Text Traleg Kyabgon When Buddhists say 'things arise due to causes and conditions,' they mean things come into being from a whole assembly of interrelated factors and events. We cannot trace a linear history or causal chain of events to their arising; they just come into being when the appropriate causes and conditions congregate at an appropriate time and place. When the causes and conditions that perpetuate or sustain the existence of that particular entity cease to present themselves, that particular entity will then disintegrate. Letter To A Friend explores coordinating body, speech and mind i such a way that produces positive karma and good outcomes. The Buddhist approach to moral or ethical values is not moralistic. Our moral and ethical values are part of a moral psychology, and part of our spiritual aspirations and orientation; they are not just about conduct.

Zen Traces Exploring American Zen with Twain and Thoreau Kenneth Kraft As Zen takes root in the west, new forms arise. For centuries Zen masters have tested their students with koans and capping phrases. A koan is a spiritual paradox that must be solved intuitively. A capping phrase is a trenchant comment. Both are meditative practices that reveal deeper truths about the self and, ideally, lead to enlightenment. In Zen Traces, Buddhist scholar Kenneth Kraft plays off these practices in a new idiom. He selects passages from four sources: traditional Zen, present-day Zen, Henry David Thoreau, and Mark Twain. When a koan-like story about a contemporary Zen teacher is paired with a pithy comment by Mark Twain, something fresh emerges.

About the Author: Kenneth Kraft, professor emeritus of religious studies at Lehigh University, is a scholar of Japanese Zen and socially engaged Buddhism. He is the author and editor of six books, including Eloquent Zen, Zen: Tradition and Transition, and Dharma Rain: Sources of Buddhist Environmentalism. Kraft holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Studies from Princeton University, an M.A. in Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. from Harvard University.

Reviews: “In this lovely book, Ken Kraft provides a unique opening for American Buddhism and American wisdom in general. The reader will come to fresh and spacious new insights and enjoyments . . . Islam Aede of the Ocean and Land A Play in Seven Acts Noor Inayat Khan Noor (Noor-un-Nisa) Inayat Khan (1914–1944) is widely remembered as a hero and martyr of the Second World War. Some of those who honor her memory are aware that before the war she wrote stories for children. Until now, however, Noor’s mystical drama "Aède of the Ocean and Land" has remained virtually unknown. A fantastical creation, "Aède" shines a revealing light on Noor’s life and thought, reflecting her unique assimilation of the spiritual teachings of her father, Hazrat Inayat Khan. In "Aède," Noor combines elements of Greek myth, Sufi esotericism, and personal experience to produce a gripping and surprising retelling of the Odyssey of Homer. The protagonist wrestles with monsters, colloquizes with nymphs, and sails the Mediterranean in search of home. Will Ulys reattain domestic bliss in Ithaca—or does another destiny await him? Noor Inayat Khan delicately infuses Homer’s epic poem with Sufi philosophy and weaves a narrative that is at once an ode to her parents as well as her own interpretation of the journey of life. As gods and humans mingle in a world of conflict, soul-searching, and heroism, Noor layers her characters, understanding their frailties and their strengths. Judaism Living in the Presence A Jewish Mindfulness Guide for Everyday Life Benjamin Epstein In our frantic, fast paced society, we need constant guidance to remind us that we can only find the peace of mind we sorely lack by looking inward. Judaism, like many other spiritual traditions, offers a unique path to cultivating fulfillment and presence of mind. In cultivating peace of mind, we do not aim to achieve transcendence. Rather, our goal is to enter fully into whatever is occurring in our lives and meet it with full presence. But being a better Jew and a happier person are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, they are mutually interdependent. From the moment we wake to the moment we fall asleep, biblical commandments provide us with guidelines that encourage us to be aware of the present moment. A Guide to Jewish Mindfulness provides concise and clear instructions on how to cultivate peace of mind in order to attain a life of greater commitment and inspiration for the present moment. Destiny Why A Tiny Nation Plays Such a Huge Role in History Ken Spiro Every Hollywood epic follows the same plot outline: a cosmic struggle of good and evil that pits a little hero against a big bad guy (think Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader, Frodo Baggins vs. Saruman, Harry Potter vs. Voldemort). The odds are totally stacked against the hero, yet as the story unfolds, his strengths are revealed, and in the final showdown he triumphs. All these movies follow this plot because it is deeply ingrained in our subconscious that this is the way the story is supposed to happen. This may be fiction and fantasy in the movies, but in reality it is the story of the Jewish people and the real plot of human history. This book walks the reader through the central themes in Jewish history: the impact of Jewish values on civilisation, Jewish drive and the disproportionate impact of the Jewish people, antisemitism and its message, the Jewish view of history and conception of time and the End of Days. These themes allow the reader to see the striking parallel between the reality of Jewish history and the universal plot of these epic movies that everyone loves. The metaphor is enhanced with striking fold-out movie storyboards depicting Jewish history in movie form. The reader will come away with an understanding of the unique role and mission of the Jewish people in history and its very special destiny.

The Importance of the Community Rabbi Leading with Compassionate Halachah Daniel Sperber The contemporary rabbi nowadays is influenced by the modern rabbinic establishments throughout the world, especially the rabbinate in Israel. This monopoly on opinions and interpretations of Talmudic texts prevents individual rabbis from creating their own independent positions out of fear of critique. The current structure gives a negative impression on the rabbinic establishment. The Importance of the Community Rabbi tries to describe and delineate key requirements for a good rabbi, i.e., one who can give socially acceptable halachic solutions within the parameters of Orthodox thinking. In order to do this, Sperber points out the halachic techniques and mechanisms that may be used toward this goal. These are illustrated with stories from rabbinic literature and examples from the responsa literature. HB 9789655242386 £21.99 September 2018 Urim Publications 160 pages

Comparative Religion What We Can Learn From the East Beatrice Bruteau The impetus for this book was a request from a group of Christian retreat directors who wanted to know what they could learn from Eastern spiritual traditions. Bruteau's response was a series of five easily accessible, nontechnical reflections on various aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism offered generally as interpretations of Christian practices or texts. Here, she has added two additional essays, "Gospel Zen" and "The Immaculate Conception, Our Original Face." Both continue the interpretive application of Eastern traditions to Christian texts. The book's popular style is a strength as it is accessible to a broad audience. Bruteau's interpretations of Christian texts are often insightful and may spark further exploration and dialogue with the East PB 9780824514570 £10.99 September 2018 Crossroad Publishing 132 pages

Kabbalah for Beginners Rav Michael Laitman PhD A book for everyone who is seeking answers to life's essential questions. We all have problems; we want to know why we are here, why there is pain and how we can make life more enjoyable. The four parts of this book tell us exactly how the wisdom of Kabbalah came about, who discovered and developed it, and what they discovered. Afterwards, the book tells us about the world we live in and finally, it explains how we can make our lives better for ourselves and for our children. Part One discusses the discovery of the wisdom of Kabbalah, and how it was developed, and finally concealed until our time. Part Two introduces the gist of the wisdom of Kabbalah, using 10 easy drawings to help us understand the structure of the spiritual worlds, and how they relate to our world. These drawings are accompanied by explanatory texts that make understanding Kabbalah very easy. Part Three reveals Kabbalistic concepts that are largely unknown to the public. For example: the Creator exists nowhere but within us; our senses reveal what they sense, not what is really out there; and reality is nothing but a reflection of our perception, and hence changes when we change. Part Four elaborates on practical means you and I can take in order to make our lives here better and more enjoyable for us and for our children. It explains how we can implement Kabbalistic principles such as freedom of choice and the power of society, and thus become more whole and fulfilled individuals.

Kabbalah Revealed The Ordinary Person's Guide to a More Peaceful Life Rav Michael Laitman PhD This is a clearly-written, user-friendly guide to making sense of the surrounding world while achieving inner peace. Each of the six chapters in this book focuses on a different aspect of the ancient wisdom of Kabbalah, shedding new light on a teaching that has too often been shrouded in mystery and misconceptions. A subtle, yet profound idea weaves the book's chapters into a coherent and concrete whole. The first three chapters tell us why the present world is in a state of crisis, explaining how our growing desires promote progress as well as alienation, and why the biggest deterrent to achieving positive change is rooted in our own spirits. Chapters Four to Six offer a prescription for positive change. Therein, we learn how we can use our spirits to build a personally peaceful life in harmony with all of Creation. For the first time ever, the timeless principles of Kabbalah are explained for a general readership by a world-renowned scholar of Kabbalah -- Rav Michael Laitman, PhD. For those seeking to achieve transformational change on a personal, communal or global level, "Kabbalah Revealed" is required reading.

Soka Education For the Happiness of the Individual Daisaku Ikeda, Victor Kazanjian From the Japanese word meaning "to create value," this book presents a fresh perspective on the question of the ultimate purpose of education. Mixing American pragmatism and the Buddhist philosophy of respect for all life, the goal of Soka education is the lifelong happiness of the learner. Rather than offering practical classroom techniques, this book speaks to the emotional heart of both the teacher and the student. With input from philosophers and activists from several cultures, it advances the conviction that the true purpose of education is to create a peaceful world and to develop the individual character of each student in order to achieve that goal. This revised edition contains four new chapters that further elaborate on how to unlock self-motivated learning and how to empower the learner to make a difference in their communities and the world.

Light of Zen in the West Incorporating 'The Supreme Doctrine' & 'The Realization of the Self' Graham Rootht This Centenary Commemorative Edition also includes two lesser known works – ‘Buddha and the Intuition of the Universal’ and ‘Techniques of Timeless Realization’. The volume is complemented by a detailed Glossary, an Index, an Original Foreword by Aldous Huxley (1955), an Original Preface by Swami Siddheswarananda (1955), and a Contemporary Foreword by Professor Asanga Tilakaratne. Benoit’s writings on the human predicament and the path to inner freedom were influenced by his studies in Zen Buddhism and psychoanalysis. There is, as well, an evident dialogue in Benoit’s writings between the Gurdjieff teaching and Zen, with insightful ideas about universal laws, ‘inner work’, the ‘human machine’, and ‘work in life’. The Supreme Doctrine and The Realization of the Self foreshadow contemporary transpersonal and integral psychology: through the re-integration of psychology and metaphysics, Benoit invites us to make our own journey toward spiritual transformation and the intuitive understanding of universal truths. Kabbalah, Science & the Meaning of Life Because Your Life Has Meaning Rav Michael Laitman PhD Science explains the mechanisms that sustain life; Kabbalah explains why life exists. In Kabbalah, Science and the Meaning of Life, Rav Michael Laitman, PhD, a kabbalist and a scientist, combines science and spirituality in a captivating dialogue that reveals life's meaning. For thousands of years kabbalists have been writing that the world is made of a single entity divided into separate beings. Today the cutting edge science of quantum physics states a very similar idea: that at the most fundamental level of matter, we are all literally one. Science proves that reality is affected by the observer who examines it. And so does Kabbalah. But Kabbalah says more: even the Creator of reality is found within the observer. In other words, God is inside of us, he doesn't exist anywhere else. When we pass away so does he. These earthshaking concepts and more are eloquently introduced so that even readers uneducated in Kabbalah or science will easily understand them. Therefore, if you're just a little curious about why you are here, what life means, and what you can do to enjoy it more, this is your book.

Chanting in the Hillsides The Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonim in Wales & the Borders Jeaneane Fowler, Merv Fowler In 1983, a tiny group of people in Cardiff and a married couple in Aberporth West Wales were the only Welsh members of Soka Gakkai International, a Japanese movement based on the beliefs and teachings of the 13th century Buddhist, Nichiren Daishonin. Today, there are hundreds of members in Wales and the Borders. This book examines the history of the movement in these two areas, and draws on original research gleaned from the members themselves. The research elicits facets of their faith, practices, and study, as well as their testimonies to the success of such beliefs and practices in their daily lives. The book combines the twin goals of academic analysis of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin in general with the warmth of its expression in the lives of its adherents in Wales and the Borders.

Shamati (I Heard) Yehuda Ashlag Rav Michael Laitman's words on "Shamati" (as appeared in Attaining the Worlds Beyond): "Among all the texts and notes that were used by my teacher, Rabbi Baruch Shalom Halevi Ashlag (the Rabash), there was one, special notebook he always carried. This notebook contained transcripts of his conversations with his father, Rabbi Yehuda Leib Halevi Ashlag (Baal HaSulam), author of the "Sulam" (Ladder) commentary on "The Book of Zohar", "The Study of the Ten Sefirot" (a commentary on the texts of the Kabbalist, Ari), and many other works on Kabbalah. "Not feeling well on the Jewish New Year in September 1991, the Rabash summoned me to his bedside and handed me the notebook, whose cover contained only one word - "Shamati" (I Heard). As he handed me the notebook, he said, 'Take it and learn from it'. The following morning, my teacher perished in my arms, leaving me and many of his disciples without guidance in this world." Committed to Rabash's legacy to disseminate the wisdom of Kabbalah, Michael Laitman published the notebook just as it was written, thus retaining the text's transforming powers. Among all the books of Kabbalah, Shamati is a unique and compelling composition. PB 9781897448106 £12.00 April 2008 Laitman Kabbalah Publishers 405 pages

Seven Days of the Heart Prayers for the Nights & Days of the Week Stephen Hirtenstein, Pablo Beneito Ibn ´Arabî (1165-1240) has long been known as a great spiritual master. His many works of prose and poetry are beginning to be more accessible in translation in Western languages. They possess the remarkable quality of being able to speak to people of all walks of life and belief, across the apparent barrier of many centuries and differing cultures. Despite this growing interest, the prayers which are attributed to him remain little-known. They provide a most precious glimpse into the real practice of the mystical life within the Sufi tradition. This is the first time that any of Ibn ´Arabî's prayers have been published in another language. This particular collection is one of the most beautiful, having been revered in the Islamic world for centuries. There are fourteen prayers, one for each day and night of the week. They include not only the most astounding expressions of contemplation and devotion to God, but also an unparalleled depth of knowledge of Union (tawhîd). As the translators show in their introduction, the very structure of the prayers is a mode of contemplation, since for Ibn ´Arabî the weekly cycle itself is sacred. These prayers are presented with notes and appendices.

About the Author: Stephen Hirtenstein is a Senior Research Fellow of the Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi Society and Editor of the Society Journal, as well as director of Anqa Publishing. He also works as a senior editor on Encyclopaedia Islamica, and teaches Sufism and Sufi poetry at the University of Oxford. His particular interest is in the conservation of the existing manuscripts of Ibn ‘Arabi’s works. Hindu Goddesses Beliefs & Practices (Religious Beliefs & Practices Series) Lynn Foulston This book explores the diversity of Hindu goddesses and the variety of ways in which they are worshiped. Although they undoubtedly have ancient origins, Hindu goddesses and their worship is still very much a part of the fabric of religious engagement in India today. The book offers an introduction to a complex and often baffling field of study. Part I, "Beliefs" provides a series of encounters with a range of Hindu goddesses starting with the idea of 'Goddess' as a philosophical concept. Topics include textual evidence for belief structures, goddess mythology, and the importance of 'the Goddess' in Tantrism. Part II, "Practices" leads the reader through the tangled web of goddess worship, pausing along the way to examine the contrast between temple and local worship, the splendour of festivals and the importance of pilgrimage to those places in India where goddesses are considered to reside. A Conclusion provides details of contemporary developments in goddess worship, such as the appearance of new deities who supply the needs of worshipers in the twenty-first century. No prior knowledge is necessary as the book is aimed at undergraduate students and anyone interested in the religions and philosophy of India. The book is a living experience of the Goddess, both at a personal level and throughout the world of Nature. It unfolds a vast panorama of insight, devotion, mantra and meditation that propels the reader into a new vision of reality beyond life and death. Probably the most comprehensive and innovative examination of Ma Kali in recent decades, the book reveals all dimensions of life and consciousness in Kali's transformative dance.
