Historic Traditions & Future Directions of Research on Teaching & Teacher Education in Physical Education Edited by Lynn Dale Housner, Michael W Metzler, Paul G Schempp, Thomas J Templin Given the unprecedented growth in the knowledge base of physical education and in the number of new physical education teacher education faculty and given that many of the field’s leaders are retired or soon will be, it is imperative that the “conceptual torch” be passed in a thoughtful way. Speakers from three generations of scholars were invited to address these subjects, and the conference was organized into six theme areas: Research on Teaching Physical Education Teacher and Student Cognition Philosophic Issues Impediments and Challenges Youth Sport, Physical Activity, Public Health, and Social Change Research on Physical Education Teacher Education These conference proceedings capture the maturation process of physical education as a field of study, for the purpose of preserving the intellectual treasures of its evolution. Sport for Development, Peace & Social Justice Robert Schinke, Stephanie Hanrahan Sport for Development, Peace, and Social Justice goes beyond the individual benefits of sport to look more closely at what sport can offer to groups of people and the communities in which they live. Although the domain of sport development is mostly uncharted, editors Robert Schinke and Stephanie Hanrahan integrate sport development projects from different disciplines to challenge readers to broaden the scope of what they think can be achieved through sport. The 18 chapters, written by some of the world’s top sport science scholars, are presented in four trajectories that reflect the sport development literature: peace and reconciliation, social justice initiatives, health and well-being, and corporate social responsibility. Each chapter contains a different disciplinary approach to sport development that will captivate and stimulate the reader to create new collaborations among practitioners and community stakeholders. Sport, Race & Ethnicity Narratives of Difference & Diversity Daryl Adair This provocative collection brings together some of the leading historians, sociologists, political scientists, and cultural theorists on an ambitious range of topics dealing with sport, diversity and difference. The book is both diverse and inclusive, for it considered race, ethnicity and aboriginality in tandem; too often these themes are segmented into separate studies. The collection features vibrant examples from different eras, places and spaces - wherein co-themes like post-colonialism, gender and media representation are embedded. From the Foreword by Grant Farred: "In Sport, Race, and Ethnicity: Narratives of Difference and Diversity the authors challenge us to think about these concepts again. This collection of essays does not only explore how these terms function, what they mean in society, but how they might be thought in relation to sport. What is different or particular about race or diversity in relation to sport, a practice that has historically served as one of the key sites where issues around ethnicity or aboriginality are played out? What role does difference perform in the selection of a nation's sports team? In many ways, this collection turns that question on its head. Case Studies in Sport Diplomacy Craig Esherick, Robert Baker, Steven Jackson, Michael Sam The growing influence of sport has created a unique opportunity to build international relationships for a number of purposes, including cultural, economic, shared humanitarian, and increasingly, political diplomacy. Case Studies in Sport Diplomacy explores the influence and effectiveness of sport diplomacy in improving long-term relations between nations by opening a dialogue with international leaders, raising awareness of host countries and to bridging cultural differences, and in building international relationships through ambassadors that could increase trade and legislative agreements, and even bring peace to nations in conflict. Assessment in Sport Psychology Robert M Nideffer, Marc-Simon Sagal Will the athlete you're working with put it all together when everything is on the line? What can you do to make sure an athlete performs best when it really counts? Are certain conditions more likely to lead to success (or failure) for her? Will he be able and willing to make the changes required to be more successful? In today's highly competitive environment the answers to these questions often spell the difference between success and failure not only for individuals but also for entire teams and organisations. At the upper levels of performance in situations where competing individuals and teams have all the technical skill and tactical knowledge required to be successful psychological factors become the most important determinants of outcome. The ability to control emotions to communicate effectively and to perform under pressure is what separates winners from losers. Sport psychologists are beginning to uncover the links between thought processes and physiology; as a result today's testing tools have much greater utility and relevance than ever before. Today more than ever before sport psychology professionals must have the skills necessary to bridge the worlds of science and application. Financing Sport 2nd Edition Dennis R. Howard, John L. Crompton The contemporary sport manager must be an entrepreneur who uses marketing and financing skills to yield optimum social and economic benefits. Financing Sport Second Edition provides the most in-depth exploration of traditional and innovative revenue acquisition methods for sport organisations. The first edition of this groundbreaking text published in 1995 has been adopted in universities throughout the world and has been translated into Chinese and Japanese. Rather than simply updating sections of various chapters -- common to most new editions -- the authors approached each chapter as though writing the book for the first time. The business of sport is fast paced and ever changing. The content of the Second Edition captures the many new and creative ideas managers in sport organisations have implemented in response to their dynamic work environment. The second edition also maintains its original focus on conventional income sources available to sport organisations including ticket sales premium seating options concessions and the sale and execution of corporate sponsorships. The book maintains a strong practical orientation. Numerous vignettes or mini-cases drawn from actual practice are interspersed throughout the book. Students enjoy knowing how capital financing and revenue acquisition practices are actually being used by sport organisations; therefore the authors include numerous real-world examples to illustrate many of the best practices employed by sport managers. This 'nuts and bolts' treatment allows readers to confidently transfer the methods to effective practice. PB 9781885693389 ÂŁ66.99 January 2006 Fitness Information Technology 607 pages

The New Sport Management Reader John Nauright, Steven Pope The New Sport Management Reader provides students and scholars with a selection of the stateof-the-art research and new conceptual thinking in the field of sport management by a diverse and prominent group of researchers. It is the first anthology to situate sport management within the broader frameworks of sport sociology and cultural studies, a process already begun in general business studies. Part II features critically informed research focused within three key topical areas of sport management: marketing and sponsorship, consumption, and governance and policy development. Thirteen case studies provide wide-ranging examples of research on the global sports industry through which students, professors, and professionals alike can form cross-cultural analyses. Part III presents work on emerging themes such as economic development, human rights, media culture, and sports tourism. Conceived and developed as a clarion call for a more critical, reflexive approach to sport management education and practice, The New Sport Management Reader is designed to spark debate, discussion, and reflection and to better inform research questions and professional practice in the future. Freedom Run A 100-Day, 3,452-Mile Journey Across America to Benefit Wounded Veterans Jamie Summerlin, Matthew L Brann When Jamie Summerlin felt the calling to do something more meaningful with his life, the Marine Corps veteran came up with an extreme idea. His desire to bring attention and assistance to wounded veterans led to a 100-day, 3,452-mile run across America. His journey was intended to inspire those who sacrificed for America’s freedom, but along the way Summerlin realized he was the one being inspired. Freedom Run not only tells the story of Summerlin’s amazing run across America and his attempt to raise awareness and money for charitable organizations that serve wounded U.S. veterans, but it reveals the heartfelt stories of the many veterans he met along the way. Beginning in Coos, Oregon, and ending in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Summerlin’s trek across the nation and the stories of the veterans he encountered serve as an inspiring and eye-opening tale of courage, determination, and honor in America. Nova Science Publishers New Title An In-Depth Guide to Sports Edited by Daniël Hak An In-Depth Guide to Sports opens with a review of the study of different biochemical profiles, through the analysis of the results obtained in different works carried out by a biochemical group and based on the literature reviewed. Biochemical profiles will be analysed: haematological, endocrinological and clinical chemistry of athletes who perform team sports, with intermittent characteristics. The authors maintain that is also the object of study of the biochemical laboratory; and the implementation of scientific knowledge in a practical and appropriate way allows the medical professional to make timely and accurate decisions, prevent injuries and plan training. Next, the authors provide a broad overview of the exercise and sport psychology research with cognitive disabilities. First, they define cognitive disability and discuss common terms used in the literature. Second, they differentiate between physical activity (PA) and exercise, review PA guidelines, and discuss PA measurement issues. Third, they focus on four specific cognitive disabilities: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome (DS), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Next, the authors examine how playing football competition at terrestrial altitude is not an isolated phenomenon. For instance, eight of the last 19 football FIFA World Cup tournaments were hosted by countries located at low-to-moderate altitude. While football-required fitness and technical qualities are affected by the development of neuromuscular fatigue at sea level, hypoxia-induced decrease in convective oxygen transport further hinders the aerobic capacity but also the ability to perform consecutive sprints, eventually impacting the outcome of a game. New Title Body and Politics Elite Disability Sport in China Zhixun Guan, Fan Hong There has been growing interest in research on disability sport internationally, yet little research has concentrated on the development of disability sport in China. This book focuses on elite disability sport in China in the context of history, politics, policies and practice from 1979 to 2012. It examines the relationship between athletes with disabilities and the three major disability games: the Paralympic Games, the Special Olympic Games and the Deaflympic Games. Three key questions are asked: What policies have ensured the success of elite disability sport? How do the elite sport system and management of elite disability sport work in China? In what way has elite disability sport empowered athletes with disabilities in China? The book includes a comprehensive literature review on the historical development of disability sport in China and beyond. Functionalism and empowerment are the major theoretical backgrounds for the research. The former analyses the function of elite sport policies, systems and other factors occurring during the process, whilst the latter examines the relationship of empowerment between elite disability sport and athletes in China. The three major disability competitions are used as case studies. A qualitative research methodology with specific methods of semi–structured interviews, data collection and documentary analysis is applied to the research. The thesis concludes that the development of elite disability sport in China has received strong support from the government. Elite disability sport is closely linked with China’s politics and international image. The success of athletes with disabilities on the international stage has raised the awareness of the issues facing people with disabilities. This has changed their image in Chinese society in general and has empowered athletes with disabilities in particular. However, there is unbalanced development in elite disability sport. The book concludes by indicating some potential future directions for further research. HB 9781536135107 £160.99 June 2018 Nova Science Publishers 210 pages
New Title A Crucible of Modern Sport The Early Development of Football in Sheffield Graham Curry This book examines in detail the early development of the game of football in and around Sheffield, England. When the first football club, Sheffield FC, was founded on 24 October 1857, it began a chain of events which would see the emergence of the earliest modern footballing subculture. It formed the beginning of a process which would lead to Association Football (or soccer) becoming the most popular team game in the world, and this primacy in club formation saw Sheffield, at least initially, develop into its most important element. The central theme of the text, therefore, is an attempt to test various hypotheses related to possible reasons behind Sheffield’s pre-eminence in the growth of club football. These include influence from three areas of society: a nearby mob football enclave, the influence of former public schoolboys and a local sporting elite already established in cricket. The narrative considers other developments in the sport at that time – the relationship between Sheffield and the Football Association in London, the movement towards a generic code of football rules, emergent professionalism, the establishment of other clubs, playing patterns and spectator behaviour. Each of these components helps to form the basis for the ongoing progression of the game in the city and wider society. PB 9781536130904 £169.99 March 2018 Nova Science Publishers 181 pages

New Title Migration in Sports The Case of European and Greek Football Panagiotis E Dimitropoulos Undoubtedly, professional football hails as the most popular sport around the world. Dozens of football players, coaches, managers, agents, and fans are partake in it every day in some form, whether it is earning money, entertaining, or simply watching this sport. However, a crucial issue that requires attention is the immigration of players to foreign championships in order to be able to take advantage of professional opportunities or to find a way into more advanced football leagues. The purpose of this book is to study the immigration of athletes onto the European football field, with an emphasis on the Greece Superleague. The main conclusion that has emerged from this study is that more and more Greek players take advantage of the free market and choose to leave by migrating to find better working conditions in one of the most advanced European championships. At the same time, this book addresses that the flow of foreign athletes has increased remarkably in all European countries and in Greece specifically, which is the seventh highest host European country of migrant footballers, despite the small size and competitiveness of the Greek league. Advances in Contemporary Sport Psychology Robert Schinke I welcome you to the 2014 accepted writings of Athletic Insight. The ordering of papers does not match with the sequence in which they were released. Rather, I chose to do something a little different in this, my final year as Editor and Chief of Athletic Insight. What the reader finds in this most recent compendium of Athletic Insight writings is nineteen papers, beginning with the most recently accepted as parts of the Autumn, 2014 edition of the journal. Afterward, I reordered the remaining accepted papers so that they made the whole of the book more coherent to the readership. Briefly, there were a significant number of papers submitted to Athletic Insight from India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Sweden, Norway, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Several of these papers were screened out even before they were sent out to editorial board members or guest reviewers for a thorough peer evaluation. Those that were deemed acceptable were then farmed out to scholars well versed in the various topics submitted to the journal. The topics submitted spanned coaching, motor learning and sport psychology intersections, youth sport, elite amateur sport, professional sport, cultural sport psychology, and various aspects relating to exercise psychology. This diversity in subject matter confirms what I have always known – that Athletic Insight is inclusive and open to a breadth of topics, critical scholarship, and emerging and contentious issues pertinent today within the sphere of sport and exercise psychology. Advances in Sports Research Edited by Esther S. Linton Although research on athletes with disabilities has increased dramatically in the last 10 years, much of this research on been on athletes with physical disabilities. The authors of the first chapter of this book examine four areas: mental skills, motivation, effective sport psychology service and research from related sub-disciplines (e.g., exercise physiology) that is relevant because of indirect influences (e.g., skill and fitness development) on performance. The second chapter explores possible modifiable and theory-based factors associated with parasport progression. The third chapter charts a course for effective interpersonal relationships between team members and team harmony and performance in sports organizations. The author proposes a psychological perspective that is driven by affective behavior foundation, with major implications for the future. The authors of the fourth chapter discuss recent technologies for monitoring eye movements, which are being actively implemented in the process of rendering psychological support to athletes. In the final chapter, the authors discuss the psychological aspects of sprint runners, in particular two interrelated constructs - athletic engagement (AE) and Athletic Identity (AI). It is the inner experience of the person who transforms that can be shared with another person to provide an accessible model to follow. Firearms in America Selected Issues & Analyses Edited by Alfonso D. Sutton Congress has broad authority pursuant to the Commerce Clause to enact laws in areas that may overlap with traditional state jurisdiction. As such, Congress has passed complex statutory provisions that regulate the possession, receipt, transfer, and manufacture of firearms and ammunition. Generally, courts have upheld the validity of firearms laws pursuant to Congress’s commerce power. However, courts have been confronted with the question of whether federal laws can be applied to intrastate possession and intrastate transfers of firearms, or whether such application exceeds the authority of Congress. This book explores these cases and how courts have analyzed these as-applied challenges under the Supreme Court’s Commerce Clause jurisprudence primarily set forth in United States v. Lopez. Fitness & Cardiovascular Risk Factors What Everyone Should Know Aurelio Leone, Linda Landini The Fitness is a widespread practice especially in Western countries and is being investigated in several respects from a scientific and health perspective as well as its role in obtaining a pleasing physical appearance. The authors also discuss fitness as a recreational hobby. Since it involves physical exercises that require an adequate preparation and not completely without risk to health, it is essential that those practitioners are made aware of both the basic principles of fitness and the potential adverse effects associated with it. This is true primarily when cardiovascular risk factors are concerned. The purpose of this book is to describe these topics in a concise way with bare suggestions for understanding the subject. Handbook of Physical Education Research Role of School Programs, Children's Attitudes and Health Implications Edited by Ricky Todaro An effective planning in Physical Education entails taking into account a set of psychological, sport training-related, and pedagogical principles developed in a particular educational setting. This is a complex task that teachers usually do without the necessary time to develop it carefully. Several problems associated with this process are explained in this book. The objectives of planning in physical education, independently of the context where it will be applied, have to be aligned to the respective national standards in each country. This book explores the world of physical education in schools. It includes discussions on several topics which include a historical overview of the relation between health and physical education; new institutional designs to achieve better results for children; the role of professionally guided physical education in primary school; effects of traditional games played in physical education classes with elementary school students; school-based physical activity interventions to prevent or reduce obesity; and the psychosocial dynamics of physical education for students with disabilities. Handbook of Research for Biomechanics & Anthropometry in Sport Science Edited by Zahra Hojjati Zidashti, Soheila Yavarmasroor, Kaveh Hariri Asli This book provides new methods to novel applications of existing methods to gain understanding of the material and/or structural behavior of new and advanced systems. The authors provide innovative chapters on the growth of educational, scientific, and research activities among athletes and provides a medium for mutual communication between international sports academia. This book publishes significant research reporting new methodologies and important applications in the fields of anthropometric measuring and software. Software and anthropometric-based research findings to date contribute to the scholarly debates over mortality trends, the nature of slavery, and the outcomes of industrialization and economic development. On the other hand, these ideas were included in the proper analysis to provide a dynamic response to the shortcomings of body motion. This book also describes advanced technology and high speed detectors/equipment to determine the operational procedures to avoid hazards on human health, economics and human biology. Consequently, the results within this book will help to reduce the risk of sport injuries. HB 9781536104660 £139.99 January 2017 Nova Science Publishers 200 pages
Innovative Writings in Sport & Exercise Psychology Edited by Robert Schinke The present compilation marks the fifth consecutive year that Athletic Insight has teamed with Nova Science on the development of a compendium of writings from the journal. This year’s contributions feature a series of international scholars from Canada, the United States, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Norway, and Israel. Upon review of these submissions, one also finds an interesting turn on the part of the journal – that more than half of the submissions are from outside of North America. More broadly speaking, submissions were received from five continents, excluding the Arctic and Antarctica. Dissect the submissions further and you will recognize several senior authors within these submissions, including Ronnie Lidor, Craig Wrisberg, Diane Gill, David Lavallee, Theodore Butryn, Tatiana Ryba, and several more. Personally, I am quite excited by the series of authors and diversity in topic matter found in this compendium. I dare say that this year’s compendium is the strongest offered by Athletic Insight to date. On behalf of the publisher and the editorial staff, I hope you enjoy the chapters that follow. What follows is a brief review of the contributions found in this compendium and then the accepted publications from 2013. HB 9781629488813 £169.99 March 2014 Nova Science Publishers 407 pages

Lockouts & Work Stoppages in Professional Sports Select Analyses Edited by Conor A. Walsh Work stoppages involving professional sports, whether caused by the players going on strike or the owners imposing a lockout, are by their very nature contentious and not always resolved quickly or easily. Major League Baseball has experienced the greatest number of work stoppages (eight), followed by the NFL (five), NHL (four), and NBA (two). While both NBA work stoppages were lockouts, the other three leagues have experienced a combination of strikes and lockouts. Major League Baseball has had five strikes and three lockouts, and the NHL one strike and three lockouts. This book provides an examination of the circumstances of each strike followed by a table that identifies relevant legislative measures, and an overview of Congressional comments and report language regarding the strike, which were drawn from hearings and reports, and remarks made on the House or Senate floor. This information shows the extent of actual, or intended, congressional involvement and how some members viewed congressional involvement in the strike, and a discussion of antitrust exemptions applicable to professional sports is also included. Pacing in Sport & Exercise A Psychophysiological Perspective Andrew Edwards Pacing in sport and exercise: a psychophysiological perspective is the first book which comprehensively examines the way humans pace exercise and sporting activities. This concept represents an exciting opportunity to combine the latest physiological and psychological theories with practical sport and exercise applications. The book will be an essential read for sport and exercise science academics, students, coaches, athletes and general exercise enthusiasts. Pacing is the strategy by which effort is managed across an exercise bout in relation to a specific goal and in the knowledge of the likely demands of the task. It is widely recognised that individuals distribute effort across a task and this is in evidence during all non-reflex exercise situations where individuals are able to receive and act upon neural feedback from peripheral physiologic systems. As such, pacing across a wide range of sport and exercise contexts is investigated and explained. Sporting activities as diverse as sprinting, soccer, triathlon, rowing and cycling are discussed. In addition, training methodologies to improve the ability to self-pace exercise are reviewed and a self-regulatory system to optimize training across all exercise types is proposed. Templates for consolidating training sessions, design and monitoring strategies are included. Pacing in relation to specific population groups such as children, overweight/obese individuals and those with chronic or acute illnesses is also discussed. Finally, it is hoped this new book will stimulate further research, growth and awareness of this important topic. A Primer for Swimming Coaches Volume 1: Physiological Foundations Ernest W. Maglischo It has been 12 years since the author published the 3rd edition of the Swimming Faster series and time has not stood still. Research has continued at a rapid pace, using increasingly sophisticated methodology to improve our knowledge of the training process. In this book, the author shares what he learned with members of the competitive swimming community throughout the world. The title of this book was changed to reflect his purpose in writing it. It is a source for coaches and athletes to improve their knowledge of the scientific aspects of training. It should also help readers become familiar with the sometimes confusing terms used by sports scientists so they can read the results of their studies with understanding. Furthermore, this book informs the readers' enough in the areas of physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology as they pertain to the training of athletes. It is the author's hope that they will be able to evaluate the validity of that research and decide for themselves if it has merit. Finally, this book provides the readers' with the knowledge to apply the information they gain to their own unique training environments. This is so they will not have to copy the training of successful coaches without understanding why it was beneficial and how it might be modified to become even more useful within their surroundings. Primer for Swimming Coaches Volume 2: Biomechanical Foundations Series Ernest W. Maglischo The author's reasons for writing this book were, first, to provide readers with some basic hydrodynamic tenants that will help them understand the reasons for the complex nature of the stroke mechanics employed by elite, competitive swimmers. The first three chapters on resistance and propulsion were included for this purpose. The second purpose was to describe, what the author believes, is the major propulsive mechanism swimmers use: shoulder adduction. A third purpose was to comment on some of, the many “fads” and misconceptions about stroke mechanics that abound in our sport. His final reasoning behind writing this book was to speculate on some theories about stroke mechanics he developed over the years. The efficacy of these theories have yet to be validated by research, but are worth considering nonetheless. These purposes were met by the individual chapters on each competitive stroke, plus a chapter on stroke rates and stroke lengths. This book is not a continuation of the Swimming Faster series, although it contains some of the same information. Therefore, the author purposely changed the title to reflect his purpose in writing it. It contains descriptions and summaries of the most important research on swimming hydrodynamics over the last several decades, in his opinion. The descriptions of stroke mechanics are supported by photographs of some of the greatest swimmers in the world, both past and present. They were made from in-competition videos where one can see how they really swim, as opposed to what they think they should be doing, which is what one often sees in pool demonstrations and out-of-competition instructional videos. Science of Sport, Exercise & Physical Activity in the Tropics Edited by Andrew Edwards, Anthony Leicht The Greek philosopher Aristotle first suggested the earth could be divided into types of climatic zones, based on their distance from the equator. The region nearest the equator was termed the Torrid Zone and was considered uninhabitable. However, almost half of the world’s population now live, exercise and regularly compete in this Torrid Zone, which in modern times, we recognize as the tropics. This book is the first text to report the mechanisms, interventions, implications and practical considerations of sport, exercise and physical activity in the tropics. Tropical conditions impose a unique blend of challenges to human physical performance and these areas are thoroughly interrogated in this monograph. Pertinent commentaries of physiology, behavior, sports and physical activity considerations in hot, humid, tropical conditions are provided. These are additionally supported by peer-reviewed cutting edge research articles to maximize performance in the tropics. HB 9781631177378 £147.99 June 2014 Nova Science Publishers 191 pages
University of Alberta Press Climber's Paradise Making Canada's Mountain Parks, 1906-1974 PearlAnn Reichwein The mountain parks are for all Canadians for all time and their value cannot be measured in terms of how many access roads, motels, souvenir shops and golf courses we've provided. -Bob Jordan, 1971 The Alpine Club of Canada imagined the Rockies and neighbouring ranges to the west and the north as a "climber's paradise." Through a century of adventure and advocacy, the ACC led the way to mountain pursuits in spectacular regions. Historian and mountain studies specialist PearlAnn Reichwein's research is informed by her experiences mountaineering and by her interest in mountain culture. She presents a compelling case for understanding wild spaces and human activity within them as parts of a whole. A work of invaluable scholarship in the areas of environmental history, public policy, sport studies, recreation, and tourism, Climber's Paradise will appeal to many non-specialists, mountaineers, environmentalists, and travellers across Canada and beyond. Among Secret Beauties A Memoir of Mountaineering in New Zealand and Himalayas Brian Wilkins Climbing entered the world stage in the 1950s: this was the era that produced not only Sir Edmund Hillary but a strong body of world-class New Zealand climbers. In this important and dramatic book Brian Wilkins, who was part of the adventure, shares his experiences of climbing in the Southern Alps and the Himalayas. During the New Zealand Alpine Club expedition to the Himalayas in 1954, the year after Everest, Wilkins was the climber most closely associated with Hillary. Hillary’s two narrow escapes from death during the expedition saw Wilkins in a unique position to gauge the character and actions of this legendary figure at a formative stage in the famous climber’s career. Wilkins’ New Zealand climbing includes the first ascent of the northeast ridge of Mt Aspiring, a gripping drama of survival and human endurance and a test of the ethics of mountaineering. In this account he also submits the writings of his contemporaries to robust critical attention, writing with warm gentle humour, honesty and insight. Management Functions in Recreational Therapy David R. Austin, Bryan P. McCormick, Marieke Van Puymbroeck This book provides students and practitioners with perspectives on the management of recreational therapy heretofore unavailable to them. Many of the management concepts apply to middle-level managers, but the focus of the book is on first-line recreational therapy managers and the areas of management identified by the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). In-depth coverage is given to the five basic functions of management: planning, organization, staffing, influencing, and controlling. In addition, chapters are provided on key concepts integral to the management of recreational therapy programs. Included are chapters on internship supervision, clinical supervision, volunteer management, and managing marketing. The final chapter, Issues and Concerns for Managers, is unique in that it contains areas of substantial importance to managers that have received little attention in the recreational therapy literature. The format for the book is readable and easy to follow. Each chapter lists objectives for the chapter, gives definitions of key terms used within the chapter, and ends with a conclusion or summary of the chapter.
