APPLIED THERMAL MEASUREMENTS AT THE NANOSCALE
Frontier Research in Computation and Mechanics of Materials and Biology - Vol 3
A Beginner’s Guide to Electrothermal Methods
by Xiaoming Zhou & Gengkai Hu (Beijing Institute of Technology, China)
This book can serve as a practical guide for novices to design and conduct measurements of thermal properties at the nanoscale using electrothermal techniques. An outgrowth of the authors’ tutorials for new graduate students in their own labs, it includes practical details on measurement design and selection, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, and pitfalls and verifications. The information is particularly helpful for a novice setting up their own experiment for the first time.
ACOUSTIC METAMATERIALS AND WAVE CONTROL
The book starts with a simple mass-in-mass chain model to illustrate the concept of negative mass due to internal resonance and its impact on wave transmission. The practical transformation theory for controlling acoustic waves is explained. Pentamode acoustic metamaterials and related cloaking design are also included. Finally, the book ends up with the sub-diffraction-limited acoustic imaging based on metamaterials. (2nd Edition)
edited by Kenneth Horch & Daryl Kipke (University of Utah, USA)
edited by Dimitrios Stamatialis (University of Twente, The Netherlands)
The current volume is shorter than its predecessor. This has been achieved by reducing some of the repetition present in certain chapters of the earlier edition and eliminating a few chapters whose topics are now well covered in review literature readily available on the internet and elsewhere. Two chapters have been retained in their original versions to provide important background material, but the remaining chapters have either been revised by their original authors or replaced by new versions written by different authors. In addition new topics have been added to the section on existing systems.
The compendium consists of 11 chapters, written by world renowned experts in the fields of membrane technology, biomaterials science and technology, cell biology, medicine and engineering. Every chapter describes the clinical needs and the materials, membranes, and concepts required for the successful development of the (bio)artificial organs.

This book highlights the basic concepts and equations for bioengineering flow processes. The well known Bernoulli equation in hydraulics is extended for pulsating flows, peristaltic flows and cardiac pumping. The dimensional analysis, model law and dimensionless equations can be related to computational models and experimental observations. New topics included oxygen transport in membrane oxygenator and micro mixing of blood flow in capillary channels
Review of the First Edition: “... is a new book by one of the world’s greatest experts on bioengineering aspects of hemodynamics. It provides an excellent elementary introduction to this topic.” Biomedical Engineering Online

Growth of the Biomedical Industry
by Jen-shih Lee (Global Monitors, Inc., USA & University of Virginia, USA) This book is about the great innovations that the biomedical industry has had on improving the health and treating diseases of people and the incredible effort that scientists, engineers, technologists, mathematicians and physicians has invested in conceptualizing, producing and marketing the innovations. This rapidly growing industry is a knowledge intensive industry that is constantly generating, and adapting to, new technology. The innovations are the movers leading to the growth of the biomedical industry since 1960. However, its growth may be threatened by the lack of access to capital, a burdensome and uncertain regulatory environment, and lack of R&D innovation and productivity. by Signe Kjelstrup (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway), Dick Bedeaux (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway), Eivind Johannessen (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway) & Joachim Gross (University of Stuttgart, Germany) Key Features: ○ There is no yet another book in the field aiming to teach the essence of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and its applications to engineering students, practitioner engineers, and scientists working on industrial problems, but a simpler way to at non-equilibrium thermodynamics ○ The publication of the book will be a great improvement of the present situation
This comprehensive and must-have edition provides a broad coverage of the optimal design of Accelerated Life Test Plans under timevarying stress loadings. It also focuses on the formulation of Accelerated Life Test Sampling Plans (ALTSPs) which integrate accelerated life tests with quality control technique of acceptance sampling plans. NONLINEAR WAVES IN BOUNDED MEDIA
http://www.worldscientific.com/jmm
The Mathematics of Resonance
by Michael P Mortell (University College Cork, Ireland) & Brian R Seymour (University of British Columbia, Canada)
Editor-in-Chief
This unique book aims to treat a class of nonlinear waves that are reflected from the boundaries of media of finite extent. It involves both standing (unforced) waves and resonant oscillations due to external periodic forcing. The waves are both hyperbolic and dispersive. To achieve this aim, the book develops the necessary understanding of linear waves and the mathematical techniques of nonlinear waves before dealing with nonlinear waves in bounded media. The examples used come mainly from gas dynamics, water waves and viscoelastic waves.

Multiscale Modelling is a relatively new research field which has in a short time had a significant impact on many scientific and engineering disciplines including material science, fluid dynamics, chemistry, and biology. In these areas problems are often multiphysics and have important features at multiple scales, particularly multiple spatial scales. Multiscale Modelling is an international peer-reviewed journal that presents forefront fundamental works in the above field of research. It features timely scientific reports of advances in modelling and computation, theoretical breakthroughs and also contains interesting review articles about emerging issues. Stability and Structures AN INTRODUCTION TO MATRIX STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND FINITE ELEMENT METHODS
by Jean H Prévost & Serguei Bagrianski (Princeton)
18
As an expert in structure and stress analysis, the author has written extensively on functionally graded materials (FGMs), nonlinear vibration and dynamic response of functionally graded material plates in thermal environments, buckling and postbuckling analysis of singlewalled carbon nanotubes in thermal environments. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the author’s works which include significant contributions to the postbuckling behavior of plates and shells under different loading and environmental conditions.
This comprehensive volume is unique in presenting the typically decoupled fields of Matrix Structural Analysis (MSA) and Finite Element Methods (FEM) in a cohesive framework. MSA is used not only to derive formulations for truss, beam, and frame elements, but also to develop the overarching framework of matrix analysis. FEM builds on this foundation with numerical approximation techniques for solving boundary value problems in steady-state heat and linear elasticity.
