Introduction
Conceptual Wooden Model
The genesis of this project started 20 years ago, during the siege in 1992 when a group of Sarajevo intellectuals imagined an utopia: they asked to the most renowned contemporary artists to donate an artwork for cultural solidarity. This work, that after being part of a temporary exhibition in a European museum, would become part of the new Ars Aevi collection. The European museums were involved from start and the first donation was a piece by Michelangelo Pistoletto. The network expanded very quickly finding in Italy many enthusiastic supporters. Politicians, donors and intellectuals have helped to achieve a rich collection of works, Jannis Kounellis, Marina Abramovic, Anish Kapoor, Joseph Beuys, are some of the artists. To promote the project his founder Enver adŞiomerspahić invited Renzo Piano to the first exhibition of the collection

in Sarajevo in 1999. As Goodwill Ambassador for Unesco Renzo Piano accepted and fell in love with the city and with the idea of a new museum. Sarajevo is a melting pot of cultures and religions, a meeting point between the East and the West which for centuries has created a network of coexistence and a sense of community. The goal of the Ars Aevi project is to create an international multicultural center and a worldwide contemporary art museum in Sarajevo, a city where ethnic groups and different cultures from East and West have met and pacifically cooperated for centuries. The Mayor of the city and the Minister of the Canton selected an area for the construction of the building in the museum district that extends from the bank of the Miljacka river to the Zmaja od Bosne boulevard, known in the world as avenue of snipers, not far from the Library.

The concept
Conceptual Model
The original idea of the project was to create a link between the residential area south of the Miljacka river and the Zmaja od Bosne boulevard, the most important communication route of the city. The project is conceived as a 300m long promenade. The promenade goes from the south bank of the Miljacka on a footbridge crossing the river, an arbored avenue traversing a lawn and lands on raised platform. This platform is the lower level of the museum with social and urban activities, linked to the heavy trafic street with a few steps across its entire width of the path. Above, on the upper level is the exhibition space, separated from the urbanity of the street level. The starting point was to build in 2002 a pedestrian bridge over the river that cuts in two parts the city. The bridge was self financed and had a great success in the urban habits of the citizens. The promenade from the bridge to the avenue Zmaja od Bosne started to exist through the empty site and people today crosses the area on a regular base. The preliminary project developed in 2005, was for a building on two levels plus a small basement with a total surface of 5.000 sqm, but it has been impossible during the past years to find the monetary support for the construction of the building. For this reason the Renzo Piano Building Workshop has simplified the concept of the project by making it modular,

buildable by adding sections overtime, following the possible fund scenarios with the idea of a first step of 2.000 sqm. A concrete columns system on a 6,00x6,00 m grid will populate the whole lenght of the area in series of 4 on a role, they will be enclosed by glass and wooden panels. The size of the additional space will be proportioned with the amount of the raised funds, and can grow subsequently with the acquisition of new funds. The column in concrete will go over two floors, at the bottom level the space will be more public, the entrance, the bar, the shop, the temporary exhibition and visitor services depending on the size of the built area, while at the upper level there will be naturally lit pure exhibition space. The natural light will be filtered through a glass roof, shaded by louvers and by dimming fabric. A small basement will be built at the beginning with the possibility of housing the mechanical equipment for the entire complex. On the rest of the site a lown with trees will be the transition space of the path from the footbridge to the museum entrance. In the future it can become the scuplture park of the museum and extend the exhibition space outdoor. As it has been at the beginning when the sculpture of Daniel Buren with his many poles on the grass lawn, suggested the allusion to the project.

The preliminary project for the Ars Aevi Museum was developed in 2005, and its realisation took place in cooperation with the UTN II program of the European Union and the City of Venice. The project was a cooperation between the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and other partners - Favero & Milan Ingegneria (structure), Manens Intertecnica (services) and Edilvenezia (coordinator of the preliminary design phase). This project was officially presented in Sarajevo at the Conference of Ministers of Culture from South East Europe which was organised by the Government of Italy and UNESCO, in Venice, in November 2005. The idea for the project came from the configuration of the site, a linear strip between the Miljacka river that cuts the city in two and the heavy trafficked avenue Zmaja od Bosne. The necessity of the connection of the urban area south of the river and the street that leads to the historical center of the city was evident. As a sewing element on the river the project foresees a pedestrian bridge that connects the residential area through the new cultural area to the avenue, one of the most important communication arterials of the city. It is a 300m promenade where social and public activities can co-exist with bar, book market and temporary exhibitions for jung artists - that will happen at the bottom level, while the pure exhibition space will be at the upper level. It will be a series of columns on a 6,00x6,00 m module that at the end of the process will fill the entire strip on a double height. The space will be enclosed by the cladding around the columns: glass panels and wooden panels on the lower level and mostly wooden panels on the upper level. The promenade, raised from the meadow level and reachable by a sloped area of the grass, will end with a wide stair on the avenue. On the underground there will be an area for all the services that will be necessary for the mechanical equipment of the building. The upper level will be naturally lit by a glassed shed roof. The bridge The idea for the footbridge was there since the first sketches presented in 2000 and 2001. It was the origin of the line that connected across the river the two part of the city that had been separated during the siege. The construction of the wooden bridge was self financed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and some friends, supporters of the idea. The City of Sarajevo and the Canton were fully involved in the initiative and helped with the bureaucratic part. The bridge has a laminated wood structure with wooden deck and structural steel stiffeners, supported by four columns, two at each river bank. It has been constructed in 2002 and since then it is part of the bridges over the Miljacka river that allow the connection between the two sides of the city.
