Dobro došli na Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival!

Welcome to the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival!

Muzička akademija u Sarajevu i Manhattan String Quartet iz New Yorka nastoje opredmetiti individualnu i kolektivnu energiju u umjetnički čin pod nazivom Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival i umjetnički edukativni poduhvat nazvan Sarajevo Chamber Music Institute.

The Academy of Music in Sarajevo and the Manhattan String Quartet from New York are working together in an effort to objectify individual and collective energy into the artistic act entitled Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and an art education endeavour, the Sarajevo Chamber Music Institute. The significance of Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival was confirmed in last year’s edition with the performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartets, which was rated as the premium production among Sarajevo’s festivals in the past year, not only in the art music field but also in general.

Kamerna djela ovih, ali i nekih drugih kompozitora, izvodit će istaknuta imena i velikani današnje reproduktivne svjetske muzičke scene, uz Manhattan String Quartet, David Finckel, Wu Han, Benjamin Bloomfield, Sangmi Lim, Aleksander Swete, Yeonju Jeong, Boris Rener, Christopher Taylor i Dino Mulić. Zadatak ovih umjetnika nije samo vrhunsko izvođenje umjetničkih djela, već i poduka studenata muzičkih akademija iz cijelog svijeta filozofiji kamernog muziciranja.

The program theme of this year’s festival is the chamber music of Franz Schubert and Antonín Dvořák. These two composers were chosen simply because they are musical geniuses of the world music scene and the best representatives of great music of small nations. Their chamber works, and some of other composers, will be performed by prominent names of contemporary world music scene, the Manhattan String Quartet, David Finckel, Wu Han, Benjamin Bloomfield, Sangmi Lim, Alexander Swete, Yeonju Jeong, Boris Rener, Christopher Taylor and Dino Mulić. The task of these artists is not only the superior performance of the works in question, but also teaching students of music academies from 2

around the world the philosophy of chamber music making. Once we wrote it, and we write it again, that the May Festivities of Music opened the door of the Academy of Music to the world, and that the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and the Sarajevo Chamber Music Institute showed that the Academy of Music is an institution where music is definitely living, in the way as a being dwells in a man or the being of music lives in the spirit of humanity. With each new musical endeavour we become more aware of ourselves and of our beings in communion of one another. Therefore, we are very much looking forward to the renewed cooperation with the Manhattan String Quartet and the artists who will perform at the Festival, aware that the individual success of these artists is the collective success of the Academy of Music in Sarajevo and vice versa, of course.

With immense gratitude to them, and those who have worked diligently on the organization of this Festival and Institute, we extend our welcome as hosts, and we open our collaborative effort for each following year, striving to increase and exceed the need of the local social practice for the highest reaches of art.

Radujmo se muzici i ljudskim susretanjima!

Let us rejoice in music and human encounters! 3

Dear ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pride that we present to you the 2012 Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and Institute. On behalf of the festival directorate it is our pleasure to welcome you!

Ove godine SCMF slavi život i djelo Franza Schuberta i Antonína Dvořaka, velikana čija ljudska snaga i maestralno umijeće čine okosnicu programa našeg Festivala i Instituta. Kompozicije kojima su ovi majstori doprinijeli repertoaru kamerne muzike istinska su remek-djela i čine najsjajnije tačke ovog žanra. Uistinu imamo veliku sreću da se ovim djelima uvijek možemo vraćati, i uvijek iznova otkrivati njihovu ljepotu i težiti ka njihovom savršenstvu!

Franz Schubert (1797–1828): RANI ROMANTIČAR U BLIZINI TRADICIJE

Franz Schubert (1797-1828): AN EARLY ROMANTIC, YET SO CLOSE TO TRADITION

During his thirty one years of life, Franz Schubert created works of unsurpassed artistic beauty. “Art’’ means being present long after one’s life and times have ended. Not many artists, especially composers, have possessed the power to continue living after their physical death. Schubert was one of those. By creating his unique art, while remaining close to the tradition of the classicist époque, Schubert composed works that bear the stamp of his own genius.

rarely seen, and to music, which, by his own testimony, Schubert was unusually bound, he gave his heart completely. Schubert was aware of himself as a musician and composer, not as robustly or as innocently, but still similarly to other great composers who have given the world a gift of their glorious creative opuses. His music is capable of the drama of Beethoven, while still inclining to the lyricism of Mozart. If we listen to Schubert’s symphonies, or quartets, or fantasies, we feel how close he can be to Mozart, and, on the other hand, if we listen to his piano sonatas, it will be clear to us that he is so close to Beethoven. But in songs, however, Schubert is only Schubert, and no one else – or we could say that everyone else - is like Schubert. And this is where the grandeur of Schubert’s genius lies – to be close to Beethoven and to be yourself, to be in Vienna, a city enchanted by Mozart, and still remain Schubert. And where could it be more important to be one’s own than in Vienna where, in Schubert’s time, such a vast number of great musicians lived and created their art.

Let us look into some of Schubert’s pieces that will be performed at this year’s SCMF. Each one of them is an ideal example of what we could call Schubertianism in terms of style, life’s decisions, life itself. Quartettsatz in C Minor, D 703 (1820), String Quartet No. 13 in A Minor, D 104 (1824), Fantasy in C Major for violin and piano, Op. 159 (1827), Fantasy in F Minor for piano four-hands, Op. 103 (1828), song cycle Die Winterreise D This selection is a precise cross section of Schubert’s chamber works, not in terms of the chronology of their creation, as much as the quality and beauty of his writing, and primarily his melodies. Each of the compositions listed is an individual indicator of Schubertian artistic attitude: to give to the world only what meets the demands of his own musical genius. If the genius of the individual happens to be in harmony with historical audience’s attitude about art as pleasure and rebellion, then the result of our choices and selection is in the right place.

Schubert composed over 1100 works, about 600 of which were songs. The songs and chamber works in particular, which dominate his oeuvre, short form. The short form is the ideal medium for what we call unity in diversity in music: unity of compositional technique - diversity of musical content, unity of musical material - variety of human emotions, unity of artistic poetics diversity of listening aesthetics, etc. It is in this framework that we should understand Schubert as a composer and allow each of us our individual aesthetics of listening. Schubert, in fact, is to be listened with a relaxed body but a tense spirit. In our existence in humanity and in relation towards what is other and different. So, let us listen to Schubert!

Poslušajmo Schuberta! 11

Antonin Dvořák (1841–1904): TRADICIJA IZ/NOVA

Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904): THE (NEW) TRADITION

Dvořák was one of the few composers that originated in a small nation and rose to a place of prominence and relevance on the world music scene. Let us also remember his Czech compatriot Bedřich Smetana, Hungarian Bela Bartók, Norwegian Edvard Grieg, Finn Jan Sibelius and others, who all prove that small nations, who do not have centuries-long traditions of art music, can yield world music geniuses. And especially the Czech people! The role of Czech musicians in the development of musical life in Western Europe and the Western Balkans is well known. Composers such as Dvořák are actually those who make the history of world’s music, the music that society has recognized as great. And it is great because it is aesthetically relevant and it is precisely because of that relevance that it remains alive for listeners and audiences, everywhere and through all times.

There are many episodes that make Dvorák’s life and his artistic path interesting and somewhat unique. His biography is filled with the difficulties of his gradual ascent to artistic fame. One of the most important events for the 32-year Dvořák was his acquaintance with Brahms, thanks to whom he received an award in a competition for talented composers in 1873, in what was then the Habsburg Monarchy. Another important episode in the life of Dvořák was his artistic engagement in the United States (1892-1895). His stay in America gave birth to his famous Symphony From the New World, the String Quartet in F Major (American), the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor and the Sonatina for violin and piano; and the general atmosphere of American soil’s melodic nature will remain to reflect itself in his works.

Bedřich Smetana, in particular. But even though we can find traces of composers such as Brahms and other late Romantics in Dvořák’s harmonic language, his melodic invention, enriched by the Czech-American overtones, is originally Dvořákian.

Nije čudno i neobjašnjivo?

Dvořák is a musician in the best sense of the word. In the autograph of one of his compositions it was written: “Despite everything I remain a simple Czech musician.” Isn’t that strange and inexplicable? He began his musical career in an entertainment orchestra playing viola, and then, when the whole orchestra became part of the National Theatre in Prague, Dvořák began to seriously study art music, primarily by learning a large operatic repertoire. The combination of innate musicality and knowledge of world music literature will form his artistic attitude that music is good only when it is well crafted and when you have something to say to others. The particular lyricism and elegy of his melodic moods are formulated through classically shaped forms, enriched by a complex harmonic language. And this is what could be called a Dvořákian approach to music and art in general. Many pages of Dvořák’s scores show that making music for him is a need, not just a profession or a potential earning. Describing his stay in America, the Czech writer Josef Škvorecký wrote a true story that Dvořák, who was terribly home sick for his beloved Bohemia, often went into nature with music paper and pencil and wrote his music down from nature’s empty space.

The Sarajevo Chamber Music Institute is dedicated to the belief that when people make music together, wonderful things can happen, lives can change, misconceptions can disappear, bridges can be built, bonds can form. We have devoted our lives to this principle, and to make it happen here we expect nothing but all of your effort, energy, intellect, and passion in the next ten days. Is that too much to ask? The music, the idea, the principle deserves nothing less. We are very excited to be working with such a talented and diverse group of students, to share with you our love of chamber music, and to work with you on this great repertoire. It is our hope that with our hard work together we may create

from each other how to more convincingly speak the universal language of music. This is what we do, it is who we all want to become, so let’s get started on this leg of our journey. Welcome, and let’s get to work!
