The program serves elementary school children from grades pre-k3 - 6th grade. Participating schools include Washington Elementary, Cameron Elementary and King Academy. We partner with several civic and community organizations to help administer the program in three SAISD. Jack & Jill of America's San Antonio Chapter and the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa's San Antoni Chapter each work the kids at Washington Elementary and King Academy. make sure that you not only have the talent and gift to run a business, but also have the skills, knowledge and the proper team in place to help you reach your business goals. Avoid trying to do everything yourself and realize that success is a process. It takes hard work, endurance, perserverance and flexibility to build a success and profitable business. Avoid giving your products and services away and by all means separate friendship from business.” "We are a powerful resource for African-American women through networking and training coast to coast."

Destined To Be “Everyday Is Not Promised To Move Smoothly” We are still destined to be all that God has chosen us to be. Even in the mist of those times when the world decides that nope what you are trying to accomplish will never transpire because you lack the appropriate measures in succeeding (of course in the natural) the decision now becomes whether to change lanes or just ride it out. Some will advise the inevitable, others; well you know (go with your heart, they would say). Some have still not accepted the fact that their destiny never has a timeline, it just disappears without notice. Yet in still the opportunities never cease to present themselves, the right person, persons seem to appear thru motivation, encouragement but most important remembering that particular day the dream you spoke into the atmosphere, the dream you shared, the dream you invisioned long before it became visible. COOKING WITH Author Sharon Fox MUSSELS FRA DIAVOLO 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic (6 cloves) 1 to 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper 1 cup white wine 2 cups Red Sauce or Fra Diavlo Sauce, recipes follow 3 pounds medium mussels, scrubbed, debearded, rinsed and drained 2 tablespoons freshly chopped parsley leaves Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and red pepper, and saute until fragrant, stirring, about 30 seconds. Add the white wine and tomato sauce, increase the heat to high, cover and bring to a boil. Add the mussels and replace the lid. Cook over high heat 3 minutes. Remove the lid and stir once gently. Continue to cook until the mussels are completely open and firmly cooked, about 4 minutes more. Remove the pot from the heat and transfer the mussels gently from the pot to a large bowl with a Chinese wire mesh skimmer. Return the pot to the heat and increase the heat to high. Boil for a minute or 2, until the sauce is thick enough to coat a spoon. Pour the sauce over the mussels and serve immediately.

Red Sauce: 2 (35-ounce) cans plum tomatoes in juice 6 tablespoons olive oil 2 bay leaves 1 head (about 12 medium cloves) garlic, peeled and finely chopped 2 medium onions (about 12 ounces), cut in 1/4inch dice 2 medium carrots (about 8 ounces), cut in 1/4inch dice 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Place the canned tomatoes in a large bowl and place your (clean) hands in the bowl and crush the tomatoes so they breakup into a range of small pieces. In a 5-quart Dutch oven heat the olive oil over medium heat until it is fragrant, but before it smokes, about 40 seconds. Add the bay leaves and stir them in the oil until they begin to brown, about 10 seconds. Add the garlic and cook

for 1 minute until it starts to turn golden brown, then add the onions, carrots, and oregano. Cook the vegetables until they are very brown, about 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally, just enough to prevent them from scorching. Add the crushed tomatoes with their juice, the tomato paste, salt and pepper, and 1 1/2 cups of water, (white wine or clam juice can be added depending on the intended use) and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, and simmer, partially covered until the sauce level has reduced by 2 or 3 inches and the sauce is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Cook the sauce for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally so it doesn't stick. Remove from heat, cool down in the pot, then when at room temperature, transfer to a sealed plastic container and refrigerate until ready to use. This sauce will keep 10 days in a well-sealed container in the refrigerator. Yield: about 2 quarts

Variation: Fra Diavolo Sauce: Using my recipe for basic Red Sauce, you can make a quick and spicy "fra diavolo" sauce that is delicious drizzled over grilled squid and other seafood. For equipment you will need a 3quart saucepan and a wooden spoon. 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 large cloves garlic, chopped (about 1/4 cup) 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper 2 cups Red Sauce, recipe above 1 (8-ounce) bottle clam juice Kosher or sea salt Heat the olive oil in a 3-quart saucepan slightly over medium heat and saute the garlic and crushed red pepper until the garlic is fragrant and beginning to brown, about 40 seconds. Add the Red Sauce, clam juice, and salt, to taste, and simmer, stirring occasionally over medium-low heat, until the sauce returns to the thickness and quantity of the Red Sauce, about 15 minutes. Yield: 2 cups This is a great dish served with pasta!

People will only be as committed as the person in charge; that's just the nature of people. So instead of only looking at "the people" for being at fault for the ills in our community and our society at large, we need to also be asking an even bigger question; Where Are Our Black Leaders Today?

Let me bring this a little closer to home. I just realized that there are about 23 churches on Chancellor Avenue in Newark, NJ and pimps, hoes, drug dealers and killers are still out in full force terrorizing the neighborhood. How does this happen?? I'll tell you how, these "so called" religious leaders ain't doin'

Yes, parents are leaders and black parents are faced with an even harder job, because young black children are under siege. Parents are the leaders of their children and their children are our future. If kids are not getting the proper leadership and guidance from their parents or guardians, then our community

et and manage their finances more effectively" Q. When it comes to finances; especially in the Black Community have we done enough to fully educated ourselves about the consequences of not applying good financial judgements? In the African American/Black Community there is still a serious disconnect with the understanding of basic financial components. Our ancestors were not taught the much needed financial concepts; they simply knew and did what was needed to survive. However, because this is an era of information and technology, we have to stop dwelling on the past (not being taught how to properly manage our finances etc.), and start becoming aware and in tune with our individual financial pictures. We have to learn and enforce within our minds that there are consequences when we do not practice good financial behaviors. Once we grasp these concepts we then have to instill in our future generations the importance of having a solid financial mindset and implementing good financial behaviors.and enforce within our minds that there are consequences when we do not practice good financial behaviors. Q. Woman are still in this day and time the sole providers for their families, often not able to set aside funds for larger investments ie housing, transportation, education, how would you counsel, the best practices? To those individuals who have dreams of homeownership, furthering your education, even investing, I am advising you to set whatever you want to accomplish financially as a goal. Depending on your time frame as to when you would like to see these things happen, these goals can be either short or long term. What I like to do is break goals down monthly, quarterly and annually. Your short term goals should set the foundation for you long term goals. May I also suggest creating a spread sheet for your expenses. By doing this you have an idea of how your money is being spent, along with determining what “extra expenses” can be eliminated. Once you have pinpointed those extra expenses which can be cut - exclude them and save towards your goal (s). Q. Business owners make financial decisions based on the need of the company daily, temptation certainly can play a role in purchasing personal items not necessary allocated within the budget, how would you advise? Is it okay to spluge?

the “PROGRESSIVE” Black Woman

It is OK to reward yourself with the purchase a personal item every once and awhile (twice a year ~ semiannually). HOWEVER please don’t make it a habit, after all your mindset as a business owner should be to have money coming in NOT going out unnecessarily. Q. How ofter should business owners revamp or revisit their business plan? As a business owner you should get into the habit of revamping/revisiting your business plan annually, preferably the last quarter of the year. By doing so, this gives you, the owner of your business an awareness of what has been accomplished over the last 11 months, and gives a sense of direction of what needs to be completed during the New Year. Q. Your first published project” The Fundamentals of Finances – Applied to Everyday Living” a teaching resource for current/future clients brings a basic understanding about finances, the fear is not having enough, its keeping what we have, what are some of the basic rules you tell your clients? What I like to do is start of by informing my clients that understanding your finances will become easier over time. You have to first change your mindset of doing and becoming better with knowing and understanding your financial picture. It will take effort however, the more effort that is put into understanding; the more accomplished you will began to feel. Secondly you have to understand the WHAT (those expenses that are needed to be operable; living, operational, and transportation), then understand the WHY (why do these expenses have to be paid?) Once you start to understand the what and why, you will have an awareness of not spending money unnecessarily. As this process becomes easier, you will realize that you do have enough money to take care of your basic necessities. Q. As parents, its important that we teach our children about saving, purchasing power, investing (future), becoming self-sufficient, you speak to our youth, how are you received and do our youth see a pattern of increase or decrease? Being an independent consultant one of the many joys I have is speaking to our youth. It’s unfortunate that basic financial literacy has not been taught to our young people, as they are our future.

ROBIN R. HAYNES

"Teaching individuals and small businesses how to budget and manage their finances more effectively" It’s extremely important that I reach as many young people that I can to teach and implement these financial components that are needed to become financially successful. The warm reception that I receive from my audiences is unbelievable. While lecturing and speaking I like to make these concepts uncomplicated and fun. I find that after lecturing there is often times a new sense of awareness and interest that has been piqued thus having the students wanting to learn more. Q. Everybody wants to be the next lottery winner (come on we all do), until that happens I recently read an article stating that if 16 million wage earners put aside 35 cents a week (5 cents a day) = 291 Million per year funding source, can this be a realistic plan? Million per year funding source, can this be a realistic plan? In order to become a millionaire you have to be realistic with your goal and complete the calculations to make sure that your goal is attainable. I recently had a conversation with a young man who informed me that he wanted to become a millionaire by the time he reached 30, (he is currently 25 years old). In doing the calculation he would have to save a total of $16,667.00 monthly to reach his goal (1,000,000/60 months). Is this goal realistic; in analyzing your individual financial picture, only you can determine whether it is or not. Q. What does the future hold for Robin? What is your biggest challenge? I am extremely excited about 2014 as this will be an intense yet insane year (in a good way). I have partnered with several entities such as New Beginnings Youth Development, Hearts and Homes Inc., Compass Solutions, and Operation

the “PROGRESSIVE” Black Woman

Hope, just to name a few. These partnerships will allow me to continue teaching the importance of financial literacy to a wide variation of audiences. I am also standing on anticipation of the second portion of the Fundamentals Series which is scheduled for release spring of 2014. This part of the series will explain the components of credit and why it is a vital component of your financial picture. My biggest challenge: Funny I don’t look at “challenges” as challenges; I simply look at them as lessons that are being taught. Everything that I experience in life (both personal and in business ) there is a lesson. At times these lessons are painful however I do learn from them. Q. Your final advice for business owners (espciallly women) My advice to business owners: Breathe life into your dreams, make your dreams become reality. There will be some stumbling blocks and challenges, and at times you will have to step back and reevaluate. In this process ask your inner self, how BAD do I want my dreams to flourish? If you answer this question with a sense of urgency and determination ~ let nothing or no one stop you in making your dreams come to life. Always have a few ways to execute whatever it is you are in the process of accomplishing (just in case your first attempt doesn’t work). Lastly be humbled by every opportunity, stay focused, faithful and committed to your vision. Always remember “no” doesn’t mean never it simply means not now. The Fundamentals of Finances Applied to Everyday Living is an easy to understand step-by-step guide to understanding finances for everyday people. Available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon & Kindle. Back in the late 1980s, a German producer found two male models and marketed them as singers. After three hits in a row and a Grammy win, it was revealed that the duo didn’t sing at all and, you guessed it Milli Vanilli was stripped of its Grammy. I’m still dealing with the trauma. My point is that there’s never a shortage of bad ideas, and parading around two non-singers as recording artists was obviously a major glitch. Thank goodness there are still plenty of good ideas floating around the universe too and blogging is one of them. But not only is blogging a good idea, it is the very foundation of your social media platform and the first step to gaining global visibility. Your blog is your home base and the main place that your community, customers or followers should gather. Not only can it make you really, really popular – it can also make you really really rich. Still need more convincing that you should have your own blog? Below are my top five reasons why everyone should have a blog.

Reason #1 –

It Lives On!

Technically, if nothing happens to wipe out either technology or the human species your blog will still be there 100 years from now. And unlike Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TumblR, your blog belongs to you! QUI JOACIN

“Go confidently in the directions of your dreams!” Qui Joacin is an on-camera personality Ity. You name when and where; she’ll be there reporting. Qui has been in the fashion and media industry for many years. She decided to not break apart from it, but to split it into two. She now reports the latest celebrity fashion, news, and events. While always fascinated by the industry and contemplating whether she should work in merchandising, events, or styling, it became clear to her that commentating was her calling. She was always told she had a great personality, knew how to make people feel comfortable, and has the ability to be the next Oprah. With her first commentating gig in February 2011, Quisha transitioned her styling business, Styles By Qui, to Qui TV and has worked very hard to build her name having worked with

Tell us about Qui Joacin the person (growing up, family, hobbies) What can I say about myself, or should I say Qui Joacin. Well, Qui Joacin is an average girl, the only difference about me is that I am extremely hard working, yet humble. I believe my personality is my best and strongest suite. I grew up with my mother as the head of the household and because of her I would harder and harder everyday. She is a true definition of an independent woman. I commend her for single-handedly raising two girls and making us as strong minded as we are. With that ability my personality was developed. In high school I was captain of the cheerleading team, class secretary, head of the fashion club, won the principal award, and even was prom queen. I guess you can say I always knew I was destine to be in the spotlight, especially since I was also in charge of doing the morning announcements for three years. I did it all! One thing I will never forget is my senior year, last day of high school. My speech teacher approached me and told me that I am a great bs'er, because I am very good at grabbing people's attention and persuading people. That was the icing on the cake, I am going to make it!

My secret when conducting interviews is be yourself. I know it sounds so cliche, but I honestly just make it seem as if I am in my livingroom talking to my friend. I am able to not overstep my boundaries because like everyone, you don't want your friend to upset with you if you ask a certain question. The most challenging thing about interviewing is people with different personalities. Trying to connect with each person is the challenge. CELEBRITY FASHION NEWS EVENTS Q. As a young woman in media have you come upon any barriers when trying to maintain your professionalism (people taking you seriously)?

Yes I have had some people not take me serious for varies reason. My age and gender definitely plays a big part in that role. I am always being asked my age. However, the best part about me is that I am never asked my age until after I finish wowing them. Once they become excited about who I am and what I do; the question is posed. I always had a professional mindset. Since I was in high school, I never did anything, take certain pictures, or was involved in any negativity that would make it onto the web. I know I am going to make it big, so I can not have anything that will come haunt me in the future.

Q. Who inspires you? And why? Oprah is my inspiration. For one, I definitely would love to be extremely wealthy like her. I mean who wouldn't? Also, I would love to have my own talk show, where people are able to feel at home with me and spill their guts. I want to have the power to be known throughout the world by every race. Secondly, Ryan Seacrest also inspires me because I want to be a demand for every network and station. I want everyone to want me on their show to conduct interviews and host shows. These two people came from nothing and made it to the very top with hard work and dedication. I too will do the same.

Q. If given the opportunity who would you most want to interview and why?

Honestly, I would want to interview Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Oprah, and Magic Johnson all together for my own personal preference. I would love love love to pick their brains. I have so many questions to ask them that I wouldn't know where to start.

Q. Sure we will be hearing a lot more about Qui Joacin, can you tell us what’s next?

Well, Qui TV has a lot in store for this coming year, 2014. We are in the process of putting together our weekly web talk show to hopefully air in February 2014, if God is willing. There are a few things that are still in the works, but we are working hard to straighten everything out. So please stay tuned. Qui TV is coming your way extremely strong in 2014. Yes, politics is a necessary evil but it seems like the emphasis is on evil! LOL. These are the reasons why people don't follow leaders anymore. The day's are long gone where people allow "so called" leaders to lead them like sheep to the slaughter. People today are more savvy, informed and demand respect and results!! For example, how in the world can we have sexual deviants like Anthony Weiner and Elliot Spitzer running for political office? What possessed people to elect a crackhead like Marion Berry, to be the mayor of Washington DC? This is exactly why a lot of people are cynical about politics and why they don't respect politicians. And as yall know, this is a big election year for Newark as well and I am sickened by the way some of our "so called"

That person really isn't stabbing you in the back or deceiving you if they decide to run against you! Cause at some point, everybody was brought in by somebody and they ran, right?? In fact, running for political office is the right that our four fathers bled and died for!! political office for 1,000 years is just so passé. This is 2013, I believe in term limits for all political offices. That way there would be no need for in fighting. At the end of your term, GET OUT! However, since we don't have term limits in Newark for the Mayor and Council seats and if many of our political leaders weren't greedy, power hungry, ego maniacs, they could groom young, smart, eager, energetic, talent, who can run and take over their seat, rather than blocking them. "If the shoe fits wear it. And if it don't apply let it fly!!" Although Bill Cosby is not a leader, I totally respected what he tried to do when he did a tour though the hoods of American to tell black folks how they were screwing up their own community and what they can do to take responsibility for turning it around. And to my surprise, many of our "so called" black political leaders kicked his back in for airing our "dirty laundry." Well, I felt at least Bill had the balls to keep it real with his people. That was more than I could say for these cowardly politicians who just turned a blind eye while vacationing in the South Of France. There is no more room for lack luster leadership! We need pastor's, parents and politicians to step up and do their jobs!! Unfortunately, bad, black, leadership is not just a Newark, NJ issue, it's a national issue and until that changes, there will be no community, just an every man for himself mentality. WINTERIZING HAIR & MAKE-UP With the onset of colder temperatures, many of us are concerned about maintaining our beauty regimens and tailoring them for the winter season. Both hair and makeup require some changes to maintain optimal health, but both can be done with just a few tips. You can also use or revamp what you already have in your arsenal. With hair, remember MOISTURE IS KEY!! Just like with your skin, your hair requires more in the winter than when it’s warmer. Being careful not to over moisturize (which is possible), you don’t want to weigh your hair down with heavy oils. The key ingredient in a moisturizer versus an oil based product is water. Since our bodies require and are made up of primarily of water, we must take care to keep our bodies and hair hydrated. Here are some tips to keep your hair at its wintry best:

TIFINI LEWIS

Beauty, Style & Fashion Contributor

● Choose a new shampoo. What you’ve been using all summer is not going to work on dry winter hair. Chose a moisturizing shampoo that will repair and protect your locks. ● Wash your hair less. Shampooing washes out the bad stuff — it also washes out the good stuff, like the protective oils that your hair needs in order to keep its strength and shine. ● Dry your hair carefully. Rubbing your head with a towel will damage the hair shaft by roughing up the outer layer, making your hair look dull and dry. For those addicted to blow-outs, try a body bouncing roller-set that lasts longer and has a lesser heat frequency. ● Make sure your hair is dry before you head outside – wet hair can freeze up and break off! ● Deep condition – This should be done all year round, twice a month. You can switch to a deeper conditioning product that seals in moisture.

the “PROGRESSIVE” Black Woman

28 SHOWCASE Magazine January 2014

Theophani Style BEAUTY IS HER REASON ● Use a leave in conditioner with your hot tools. ● Pay attention to your diet – what you eat nourishes your body, including your hair. Eat right, again, drink lots of water … it’ll make a difference! For those who favor wool coats, scarves, turtle necks and hats, these beautiful luxury fabrics can be a nightmare for your hairline at the nape. If possible, opt for silkier scarves around the neck, or line your hats with a silk-like lining or scarf. This also can help in not robbing your hair of precious moisture and can prevent popping off .

:

● For makeup applications, the first thing to consider is the condition of the skin. Keeping in mind that your skin is your canvas, it must be prepped and made ready for application. During the winter months it's important to use a thicker moisturizer on your face and the rest of your body. Since your skin is your biggest organ, you need to look after it. Here is where primers and facial moisturizers are important. Not only do they protect the skin’s surface, they seal in moisture that may be lost due to extreme cold exposure. A few basic tips are below to help you with seasonally appropriate makeup routines ● Foundation. With less sun exposure, our complexions tend to lighten and our beautiful summer tans start to fade. It is necessary to adjust your foundation shade to not appear artificial or ruddy. The difference can be as simple as one shade lighter than you summer shade. Spend a little time by testing shades until you find the closest match possible. Also with foundation textures, creams tend to be a bit more forgiving and offer great coverage along with added emollients. If you use an oil-free formula, be sure to not skip out on your moisturizing. Just because you are oil -prone, does not mean you are to starve your skin of moisture, on the contrary. Denying your skin moisture will cause it to produce more oil and possibly breakout. Set it with a light dusting of

the “PROGRESSIVE” Black Woman

translucent powder applied with a large, loosely bristled powder brush. ● Flatter your eyes with subtle makeup. Winter's bold, bright look is focused on lips or cheeks. While you don't want to overlook your eyes, you will want to enhance them with neutral makeup. First, give them a bit of a boost by applying a thin black line with a cream or liquid liner very close to the lash line. Define the crease of your lid with a neutral shade of bronze or gray shadow. Apply with a crease brush in a half-moon shape. Curl your lashes, and then apply two coats of black mascara. I recommend using a waterproof formula; winds and cold temperatures tend to cause us to tear. You can avoid the black watery mess that can occur when using a regular formula. For holiday looks however, feel free to pull out your summer jewel-tones and mix and match with your subtle winter shades. Contrast is fun and flattering at the same time. ● Choose between your cheeks or lips for the bold pop of color. If you have full lips with pout to spare, go for an assertive mouth. If your cheekbones are high, do an amazing blush flush. Pick only one area or you'll look overdone. For your color choices, think flowers and fruit rather than jewels -- juicy red, rosy pink, ripe peach. Fairskinned ladies look great in cooler pastel shades, while darker beauties can choose warm, bluebased shades. When all else fails, choose a shade that you feel comfortable and sexy in, no matter your complexion. At the end of the day, it’s about how you feel in your own skin. These of course, are suggestions. If you wear make-up that makes you feel good, you will never make a mistake. Don't be afraid to have fun and experiment and play a little. Go with what you're attracted to, follow your own rules, and wear whatever it is with confidence.
