Adventure Awaits... PLAN YOUR VISIT TO THE OUTDOOR CAPITAL OF SOUTH CAROLINA
ExploreBerkeleyCounty.com
A message from our EXPEDITION LEADER July 2021 is our 2nd annual SC7 Expedition. Our goal with each expedition is to promote the amazing natural wonders and outdoor recreation opportunities in our beautiful state and to raise awareness of the work happening almost daily to make our state more resilient. Our team is dedicated to being the change we wish to see in our world by living the message we preach. During July we will be hiking from the mountains to the sea. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. During the rest of the year we work with remarkable partners to pick up litter, clean our waterways, plant 3.4 million trees, build artificial reefs off the coast, provide environmental education programs, and more. We invite you to join us on the trail either in person or virtually by following us daily on Facebook and Instagram. Together we will BE THE CHANGE!!
Tom Mullikin
THE EXPEDITION Utilizing the 350-mile Palmetto Trail l as the guiding pathway, the SC7 Expedition is a 30-day adventure across the state of South Carolina. The purpose of the SC7 Expedition is to highlight the amazing natural resources in our state AND to build awareness of the tremendous work that is being done to protect these resources and create resiliency strategies related to a changing climate. SC has experienced a severe weather event each year since 2015, costing our state billions of dollars. The SC7 Team is dedicated to not simply talking about strategies to build resiliency, we are actually doing something. From picking up 3.5 tons of litter annually and planting over 3 million trees to cleaning waterways and building artificial reefs along our coast…we are committed to BE THE CHANGE!

stumphouse tunnel / issaqueena falls / ross mountain passage trail
Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park is a state-of-the-art public mountain biking facility located in Walhalla, SC. Activities: Hiking + Biking
Length: 3.0 miles
It is the only park of its kind in Upstate South Carolina. Difficulty: Easy
Click to explore the Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park
Overview :
The Stumphouse Tunnel is located at the Stumphouse Tunnel Park. The tunnel is an historic railroad tunnel for the Blue Ridge Railroad. We will explore the Tunnel and then take a quick hike over to explore Issaqueena Falls. We will then hike 3 miles along the Ross Mtn Passage Trail, a connecter from the Stumphouse Mountain Trail to the Oconee Passage.
Fun Fact:
Since the tunnel stays a constant temperature all year round, Clemson University took advantage of the peculiar circumstances in order to research the process of curing blue cheese beginning in 1941. Blue cheese is no longer cured in the tunnel, but the research conducted within the tunnel played a large role in local production.
Mission:
Explore the Stumphouse Tunnel and Isaqueena Falls and hike 3.0 miles of the Ross Mtn Passage Trail from the Stumphouse parking area to Ross Mtn Road.
For those without shuttle transportation, we suggest following the team to the Lake Loop Trail and returning back to the Stumphouse Tunnel parking lot.

Roof of the palmetto state (Summit Sassafras Mountain) 1ST WONDER OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Overview :
Sassafras Mountain, the Roof of the Palmetto State is the highpoint of South Carolina at 3533 feet above sea level. Our hike will summit Sassafras Mountain beginning at the Chimneytop Gap Trailhead and continuing to Sassafras Mountain. (2.1 miles total) From the top you are able to view 6,000’ and other mountains in the distance. The geology of Sassafras Mountain reflects millions of years of plate tectonics. It lies within the inner Piedmont belt and is thought to be part of a continental fragment that attached or even reattached North America during the Middle Ordovician at a time of continental collision and mountain building called the Taconic Orogeny (mountain-building episode). These geologic processes caused active stream down-cutting and the resultant modern scenic gorges and waterfalls that surround Sassafras Mountain.

JOCASSEE GORGES HIKE
Overview :
2ND WONDER OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Named by National Geographic as one of the “50 of the Last Great Places”. In the uppermost reaches of South Carolina, the clear waters of Lake Jocassee splash against the base of the Blue Ridge Escarpment that represent the sharp transition between the South Carolina Mountains and the Piedmont. Here forested slopes drop in elevation by 2,000 vertical feet in a matter of one to two miles. The name “Jocassee,” according to Native American legend, means “Place of the Lost One.” The region is characterized by a high diversity of flora and fauna as a result of its location at the interface between the mountains and piedmont. Both mountain and piedmont plant communities are represented in the area creating a transitional zone from lower rolling hills to higher elevation mountains. The region has drawn the attention of scientists for centuries. It is where, in the mid-1700s, William Bartram discovered the famed azalea along with other species new to science and enjoyed “a view inexpressibly magnificent and comprehensive”. On this day, we will explore the Jocassee Gorges along the Blue Ridge Electric Co-op passage of the Palmetto Trail.

Jocassee Gorges includes 43,000 acres from Lake Jocassee, in northern Oconee County, to the border of North Carolina/South Carolina, on up to Caesars Head and Table Rock State Parks. Jocassee Gorges is considered a temperate rainforest as it receives 75 inches of rain annually. This makes it a unique ecosystem not found anywhere else in the eastern United States.
Begins: 9 AM
TABLE ROCK STATE PARK 158 Ellison Ln / Pickens, SC
Jocassee Gorges is a spectacular place with untouched mountain forests, crystal clear streams, numerous cascading waterfalls, diverse wildlife and over 60 species of rare and endangered plants. Of special significance: more salamanders are found here than anywhere else in the world! It’s no wonder National Geographic’s world-traveling contributors deemed Jocassee Gorges worthy of distinction.

The American Battlefield Trust and the South Carolina Battleground Trust together with numerous partners at the national, state and local levels, are working to create The Liberty Trail. This driving trail will be a one-of-a-kind educational and heritage tourism destination through which key battlefields of the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution will be preserved, interpreted and promoted. Ongoing implementation will eventually link more than 70 sites across South Carolina, preserving 2,500 acres of battlefield land. This will create a presence for The Liberty Trail in up to 35 counties.
Please visit www.T heLibertyTrail.org to learn more about this innovative, collaborative effort and sign up for email updates. You can also follow along on social media, watching as our many partners begin implementing The Liberty Trail vision using the hashtag #LibertyTrail.
Day 9 - Friday, July 9th
Length: 1.5 miles
Activities: Hiking
Difficulty: Easy
Overview :
Kings Mountain National and State Military Parks are one of the State’s Liberty Trail locations. The Revolutionary War Battle at Kings Mountain is a unique battle for several reasons. It was one of the few major battles of the war fought entirely between Americans: no British troops served here. In the South, many people were divided. When the war started, some fought for independence, others for loyalty to England.

CROFT PASSAGE HIKE
Overview :
The Croft Passage is a roller coaster for hikers, cyclists, and equestrians through historic Croft State Park. In the 1700s, the nearby shoals supported a hub of mills, trading, and political activity, including the area’s first governmental organization, the Spartan Militia District. The northern trailhead marks the site of a Revolutionary militia victory at the First Battle of Cedar Springs in 1780. The park is best known as Camp Croft, a World War II Army training center. Nearby is Blackstock Battlefield where Revolutionary War patriots defeated the British. On November 20, 1780, patriot militia fighting under Gen. Thomas Sumter (aka, “The Carolina Gamecock”) prevailed over British regulars under Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton (aka, “Bloody Ban”). Two months later Tarleton lost the Battle of Cowpens and fled north with his remaining troops.

BLackstock battlefield + MUSGROVE MILL
Overview :
Blackstock Battlefield is situated along a remote section of the Tyger River where Revolutionary War patriots defeated the British. Musgrove Mill’s peaceful setting in the Piedmont woods stands in sharp contrast to the bloody Battle of Musgrove Mill that took place there on Aug.19, 1780. The Revolutionary War historic sites at Musgrove Mill interpret and protect the location of the Battle of Musgrove Mill. The battle, in which the vastly outnumbered Patriot militia outlasted the Loyalists in a surprising victory, is detailed through interpretive signage in the visitor center and along two and a half miles of nature trail.
Length: 1.6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate Activities: Hiking
Mission:
Hike the Blackstock Battlefield Passage of the Palmetto Trail (1.6 Miles). The Expedition Team is receiving a private “behind-the-scenes” tour of Blackstock Battlefield.
Participants are encouraged to explore Musgrove Mill State Historic Site in the afternoon.

peak to prosperity HIKE
Length: 3.5 miles
Overview :
Activities: Hiking + Biking
Difficulty: Moderate
The Peak to Prosperity Passage proceeds west from the Alston trailhead in Fairfield County across the impressive Broad River trestle. The historic railroad bridge was built in 1890 and crosses the Broad River. The view from the 1,100-foot-long bridge is spectacular, especially when bald eagles soar. An earlier bridge was intentionally burned by Confederate troops during the Civil War to slow the advance of General Sherman’s troops. Across the river in Newberry County, the rail-trail skirts Peak and cuts an easy swath through piedmont forest to Pomaria and Prosperity. Along the passage, 14 wooden trestles span the meandering Crims Creek where German immigrants settled in the 1730s. The area is known as the Dutch Fork.
Mission:
Hike the second portion of the Enoree Passage (4.5 miles). Team will meet at FS 333C near milepost 26 and hike south along the trail to the Whitmire Highway – Hwy 72 (near mile post 21.5) – 4.5 mile hike.
Environmental Education Topic:
Interview with Mary Roe, President / Palmetto Conservation.
Suggested Lodging :
The Alston trailhead park provides parking, picnicking, camping, and canoe access on the Broad River. 3 night maximum for camping.

BATTLE OF CAMDEN - HISTORIC CAMDEN
Overview :
In May 1780, after the fall of Charles Town and the devastating American defeat at Waxhaws in May 1780, Continental troops began reforming at Charlotte, N.C., with Major General Horotio Gates, the “hero of Saratoga,” arriving in July to take command. Both armies understood that Camden was essential to the British plan to control the South Carolina backcountry. On August 16, Gates moved on Camden, but in what is considered among the worst American tactical decisions of the war, he placed his most inexperienced militiamen opposite the most experienced British regulars. Predictably, the Patriot militia was routed, and the attempted assault on the British militia failed when Continental Major General Baron Johann de Kalb was mortally wounded. When Tarleton and the British Legion made a saber attack on the rear of the American line, the Continental regiments broke and fled the field. Gates’s army suffered more than 2,000 casualties in the one-hour rout and hastened the 60 miles back to Charlotte. In the aftermath, Gates was removed from command and replaced by Major General Nathanael Greene.

SaNtee Indian Mounds at fort watson site
Overview :
The large hill located on the Bluff Unit at Santee National Wildlife Refuge is known as the Santee Indian Mound and Fort Watson. The Santee Indians were part of the Mississippian culture, living along the Santee River for thousands of years. The mound itself is estimated to at least 1,000 years old. It served as the ceremonial site and a burial for the Native American tribe. The site at Scott’s Lake is the largest such mound discovered on the coastal plain to this date. The mound took on a new meaning at the end of the 18th century, when it was re-purposed by British troops as an outpost, which they named Fort Watson after the British Colonel, John Watson, who directed the construction of the fort. The Mound was the ideal location for such a fort since it provided an elevated vantage point overlooking the Santee River and the road to Charleston. The fort was part of a chain of British strong points that stretched across South Carolina which included Fort Mott, Granby, Ninety Six, Camden and Charleston. On February 28, 1781, General Thomas Sumter’s partisans unsuccessfully attempted to take the fort. A new campaign was led by General Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion and his Lieutenant Colonel, Harry “Light Horse” Lee. Major Matham of Marion’s Militia proposed
to build towers that could fire down into the fort. The Americans pushed forward and after eight days, forced the surrender of Fort Watson. The fall of Fort Watson was an important link in the chain of events that made the British authorities abandon the back country of South Carolina. Both the Indian Mound and Fort Watson are now protected by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service at the Santee NWR.

HONORS FRANCIS MARION
The SC7 Expedition honors Brig. Gen. Francis Marion, one of South Carolina’s most celebrated military heroes. Interestingly, much of the terrain being covered in this expedition is the very same ground upon which Marion and his men operated during the American Revolution, which erupted in 1775 and ended in 1783. W H O WA S M A R I O N ? Francis Marion (1732-1795) was a South Carolina militia officer – named among the BIG THREE guerilla leaders including Brigadier Generals Thomas Sumter, “the Gamecock;” and Andrew Pickens, “the fighting elder” – who persistently harassed, threatened, and often defeated numerically superior British Army forces which were operating in the Palmetto State during the British occupation of South Carolina. Marion and his contemporaries did so even after Continental Army forces were driven out of the state following the defeat at Camden. But the lore and legend of Marion surpasses all others. And according to historian Walter Edgar, Marion’s men were “a ragged band of both black and white volunteers.” Marion was a native South Carolinian, a veteran of the French and Indian War, and a post-Revolution state senator. He was born in Berkeley County where he also died.
WHY IS HE SIGNIFICANT? Among the pantheon of American military greats, perhaps no name rises above that of Marion. An exceptionally gifted and successful guerrilla leader, Marion was dubbed “a damned ol’ fox” by British dragoon commander Banastre Tarleton. This nom de guerre morphed into “Swamp Fox.” And today Marion is touted among the lineages of the S.C. State Guard (the historic militia), the S.C. Army National Guard, even the S.C. Air National Guard with their “swamp foxes” emblazoned on their F-16s. Everybody else claims him too, including U.S. Army Special Forces who credit Marion as “the father of irregular warfare.” Streets, town, and town squares have become namesakes of Marion across the U.S. And every schoolboy and schoolgirl has been regaled with stories of Marion confounding the enemy time-and-again, striking from nowhere, then melting away into the misty swamps and thickets where conventional forces – even special cavalry units – were unable to track him.

Day 25 - Sunday, July 25th
AWENDAW PASSAGE HIKE
Overview :
Awendaw Passage is the coastal terminus of the mountains-tosea Palmetto Trail. The Trail’s namesake trees greet users at the Buck Hall Recreation Area trailhead. The Trail meanders through maritime forest and offers sweeping vistas of Lowcountry salt marsh along Awendaw Creek. These marshes provide highly productive nursery grounds for numerous commercially and recreationally important species and serve as filters to remove sediments and toxins from the water. The salt marshes also buffer the mainland by slowing and absorbing storm surges, thereby reducing erosion of the coastline.
Mission:
Hike the Awendaw Passage of the Palmetto Trail from the boat launch at trail post 4 to the Buckhall Recreation Area Trailhead.

Salt marshes and Spartina.

ACE BASIN EXPLORATION 5TH WONDER OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Overview :
The Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Basin (abbreviated as ACE Basin, spoken as ace basin) is one of the largest undeveloped estuaries along the Atlantic Coast of the United States. Located primarily in Colleton, Charleston, and Beaufort counties in South Carolina, the Ashepoo, Combahee and South Edisto rivers combine into the larger St. Helena Sound and drain a significant portion of the Lowcountry region. The 350,000 acres area is known for its natural environment and the preservation of its marshes, wetlands, hardwood forests, and riverine systems and the fauna that occupy the area. In 2014, National Geographic featured the ACE Basin as its cover story, and The Nature Conservancy called the area “one of the last great places.”

COOPER RIVER - BLACKWATER DIVING
Overview :
Our final exploration of the expedition will be black water diving for fossils in the Cooper River in South Carolina’s low country. Sunlight can only penetrate 10 or so feet into the tannin colored river and hence the name blackwater diving. Black water diving in South Carolina is a dream come true for fossil collectors. Fossils and artifacts erode from the river banks and accumulate along underwater gravel beds strewn about the river bottom anywhere from 20 to 50 feet below. Many of the fossils are fossil shark teeth, including the famous Megalodon shark, and its predecessors. This is one of the best places on earth to find a fossil megalodon shark tooth.
Mission:
The Expedition Team will explore the blackwater of the Cooper River via SCUBA. Any megalodon teeth or other fossils found during this excursion will be donated to the Berkeley County Museum.
Environmental Education Topic:
