2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

All hail the boys of fall elcome once again to the Spinal Column Newsweekly's annual "Kickoff" prep football preview section featuring all 10 of the west Oakland County high school varsity teams. While the anticipation is building toward the start of the college football and National Football League (NFL) seasons, there is nothing quite like the atmosphere of high school football. It's students, whether they are freshmen or seniors, returning from summer break and cheering on their school's Michael Shelton team. The stands are full of parents and grand-parents. The Staff Writer air brings with it a cool breeze, giving way to the end of summer. But fall doesn't officially begin for most until that ball is officially kicked off. It's the cheerleaders on the sidelines, the bands marching on the field and the tailgate parties in the parking lots. And it's those groups of young men who have worked hard in the winter, spring and summer preparing to take the field with their helmets shining under the Friday night lights. All the miles they have run, all the weights lifted, all the plays memorized, all the drills endlessly run have been in preparation for that first game, that first bone-crushing hit, that first thrilling catch, that first big run, that first touchdown, and those first seven points on the board. It's young men playing not for fame or fortune, but for the love of the game, for moments they can reminisce on with their loved ones the next day and years from now. Lakes area football fans have been blessed recently to witness their teams win division, district, regional and even state championships, and see a wide array of players showcase their skills and talents. This season will be no exception. After winning its first state title in over a decade following five failed attempts, Orchard Lake St. Mary's celebrates a milestone this season: 100 years of gridiron action. And it will do so with its team color covering its entire new field that is the envy of schools across the nation. And the Eaglets will hope to paint Ford Field red once again in November. The most competitive division in the lakes area is the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division, which is up for grabs this season. Walled Lake Western is looking to repeat as North Division champions and duplicate its run to the state semi-finals from last season — and go beyond. But, Walled Lake Central wants the division title back from its rival, not to mention a

W

third straight district championship and much more. Over on Bogie Lake Road, Walled Lake Northern hopes this will be the year that the Knights joust their way to their first state playoff appearance. But Northern's big brother, Huron Valley Lakeland, has retooled with fearsome offensive and defensive lines that will look to give opponents nightmares. Then in Waterford, one program looks to return to glory while two programs that have been mired in mediocrity look to rise from the ashes. Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes had gone a decade and a half without missing the state playoffs until last season. It's long-time coach has responded with reinforcements as members from the school's last state championship team make up the Lakers' new coaching staff that will look to help Our Lady rediscover its greatness. Waterford Kettering responded to a winless campaign last year by bringing in Kyle Schultz, a former Kettering assistant who helped Pontiac reach the state playoffs in 2011. Waterford Mott welcomes Chris Fahr, a Michigan native and former U.S. Marine who looks to turn the Corsairs into something akin to the few and the proud. And in West Bloomfield there's a head coach that hopes the third year of his tenure will bring with it the fruition of his plan to turn the Lakers into contenders. We at the Spinal Column Newsweekly — our entire staff, Amy K. Lockard including myself and photographers Amy K. Lockard and Damon Tang — Staff appreciate your love of high school Photographer football and hope that this new, expanded Kickoff section will serve you as a preview of our coverage to come. That includes the return of Kickoff Weekly, our weekly online video show previewing our featured game of the week, with interviews of the coaches and players involved. We thank you for staying with the Spinal Column Newsweekly for coverage of lakes area high school football Damon Tang and we hope that you share our enthusiasm for the upcomPhotography ing season. Intern To me, it brings to mind the lyrics of the Kenny Chesney song, "The Boys of Fall." "When I feel that chill, smell that fresh cut grass, I'm back in my helmet, cleats and shoulder pads, standing in the huddle listening to the call, fans going crazy for the boys of fall." ❏

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

Reloading, not rebuilding Vikings confident despite just six returning starters ow do you follow possibly the best three consecutive seasons in school history? That's a question the Walled Lake Central Vikings will look to answer in 2012. From 2009 to 2011, Central finished with a combined record of 27-8, including the school's first regional championship and trip to the state semi-finals in 2010; three straight state playoff appearances; back-to-back Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division titles in 2009 and 2010; and a KLAA Lakes Conference title in 2010. Last season the Vikings conceded the KLAA North crown to their rivals from Walled Lake Western prior to playing in their first state playoff game in Division 1 football since 2003, as their last four playoff appearances were in the Division 2 bracket. But the Vikings rebounded first to stun the defending Division 1 state champion Lake Orion on the road, 20-

17, in a pre-district game on a gamewinning 20-yard field goal by Bryan Maxwell as time expired. The kick was set up by a fake-punt pass in Dragons' territory on fourth down that kept the drive alive. Central then knocked out county powerhouse Clarkston, 45-26, a week later to claim a second straight district championship. The Vikings' season then came to an end in a 38-21 defeat to Utica Eisenhower in a regional final as Central felt short in its bid for a second straight

With three key starters gone from last year’s team, Walled Lake Central considers this a season to “reload,” not “rebuild.” The Vikings return three starters from each side of the ball and the offense will be ran by seniors Eric Rosteck and Nick Timmons, who will likely be splitting time at quarterback this year. regional championship. Now Central will have to get adjusted to life without quarterback Zac Leimbach, wide receiver K.J. Schultz, and offensive lineman Charles Sovel. "We have three returning starters on each side of the ball," said Central Head Coach Robert Meyer. "We're a very young team, but the boys have worked hard. We're pretty fast and our kids are excited and motivated." The Vikings plan on employing a triple-option offense and a 4-3 defense this season. One of Central's captains this year is three-year varsity player and returning starting linebacker Matt Boulus, who will be key to the Vikings' defense. "We're just following the steps of the team before us and setting the new tone of the school with this new group," Boulus said. Matt Boulus, "We've got high senior hopes and we linebacker think we can be where we were last season." He will be joined in the defensive unit by senior linebacker John Glenn

and senior defensive lineman Devyn Bogert. "For us it's not rebuilding, it's reloading," Bogert said. "I think we have some kids that will make an impact and it's all coming together." As for the quarterback position, it appears that seniors Eric Rosteck and Nick Timmons will be splitting time under center, as well as playing in the secondary. One of their main targets on offense will be wide receiver Alex Palafox, who will also be one of Central's main cornerbacks. Senior offensive lineman Mike Eric Rosteck, Dobrowolski will senior also provide proquarterback tection up front. On special teams, the Vikings bring back senior kicker Bryan Maxwell, who connected on five field goals last season. "I think we're pretty happy with the progress, it's just a matter of getting more game experience under our belts CONTINUED PG. 7

and I think our kids will respond," said Assistant Coach Jeff Penrod. "There's a lot of consistency with our coaching staff and we've really made no adjustments because we believe in what we're doing." Central opens the season with two non-league games at home against Saginaw Heritage (5-4 in 2011) and Livonia Stevenson (2-7 in 2011). The Vikings' KLAA North schedule includes a road matchup against Walled Lake Northern on Sept. 21 before hosting Walled Lake Western on Oct. 5, when Central will look to avenge last season's 18-11 loss to the Warriors. "I think staying healthy will be key and you try to limit injuries as much as you can. We also have to be very fundamental with blocking and tackling," Penrod said. Meyer added that despite a lack of game experience, he believes his team will be fine if it can make it through its first few games unscathed.

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

Knights knocking on the door Northern on the cusp of moving to new heights alled Lake Northern is hungry to earn its first-ever visit to the state playoffs in its 10th season, after coming so close last year that the Knights could almost taste it. In 2011, Northern finished 5-4, matching their 2005 record for the best in school history. The Knights also finished 3-2 in Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division play, which included a 28-21 victory over rival Huron Valley Lakeland, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Eagles. After a victory over Huron Valley Milford on Oct. 14, Northern entered Week 9 last season with Matt Kosmalski, five wins and a senior three-game winrunning back ning streak. However, the Knights fell 7 points short to KLAA Central Division champion Northville, leaving them one win short of an automatic state playoff berth. Now there is a sense of urgency as the Knights know they are on the cusp

of taking the football program to new heights. "We're cautiously optimistic," said Northern Head Coach Brett Moore. "We have a lot of three-year starters and good senior leaders. We're just making sure that the young kids adapt and progress and get used to the varsity level."

Brett Moore Fifth Season There’s a sense of urgency among the Walled Lake Northern Knights, who know they’re now on the brink of taking their program to new heights. After a disappointing 2011 season, Head Coach Brett Moore is cautiously optimistic about the Knights’ prospects in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association North Division this year. Leading Northern's offensive attack will be the double-barreled running game of senior running backs Matt Kosmalski (5-feet-10-inches, 170 pounds) and Jake Ginster (5-feet-11inches, 175 pounds). Last season, Ginster rushed for 550 yards and nine touchdowns and had 14 receptions for 171 yards, while Kosmalski had 293 yards rushing and two touchdowns, as well as 20 receptions for 255 yards and four touchdowns and 11 kickoff returns for 250 yards. "Last season was a huge disappointment because all of our games were close. We're using that as fuel this season for all these games," Kosmalski said. "I'm just trying to get all the jobs done that I can. My teammates are always looking up to me and I just try to be Collin O’Donnell modest and do senior my job so they quarterback can follow." Q: Who is your coaching role model and why? BM: Bill Parcells. I liked the way he handled individuals, and the way he was always professional. Q: What do you enjoy the most about coaching high school football? BM: Bringing together a group of young men and getting them to come together as a team. Making it work with the students you have and from your district. Q: Which college or professional player do you wish you could coach? BM: Troy Polamalu (of the Pittsburgh Steelers). He's just a complete difference maker and a continuous motor.

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW ➼ W.L. NORTHERN FROM PG. 9 improve greatly this season if the Knights are to make the post-season tournament. "We've been hitting the defense hard the entire off-season," Moore said. "We've had a lot of film work but the coaching staff put together a good game plan and it's all about getting back to basics." In addition, Kosmalski will play at defensive back, where he finished Kody Harthur, with 83 total tacksenior les, including 69 defensive end solo tackles, as well as a team-high four interceptions last season. Senior Mike Peer (6-feet, 180 pounds) returns at linebacker after finishing with with a team-high 88 total tackles last season. Senior Myles Kenney (6-feet-1-inch, 210 pounds) will play at defensive

tackle after finishing with 21 total tackles last year, while senior Kody Harthur (6-feet, 210 pounds) will get his chance to step up and contribute at defensive end. Northern's non-league schedule consists of home matchups against Livonia Churchill (Friday, Aug. 24) and Plymouth Salem (Thursday, Aug. 30). The Knights will also have homefield advantage when hosting Walled Lake Western (Sept. 14) and Walled Lake Central (Sept. 21), with the game against the Vikings serving as the team's "Pink Out" in which pink jerseys will be worn to benefit women's breast cancer awareness. Northern will then travel the short distance to Huron Valley Lakeland for the annual Battle of Bogie Lake on Oct. 5, before closing the regular season with its homecoming game against South Lyon on Oct. 19. The Knights are hoping that when time has expired in Week 9, it can finally start preparing for state playoff football. ❏

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

'A lot of explosive potential' Warriors regroup with enthusiastic new core players resh off a division title and its first run to the state's final four in a decade, Walled Lake Western is looking to maintain its perch atop its city prep gridiron standings. "We had a good scrimmage against (Bloomfield Hills) Brother Rice and Farmington Hills Harrison," said Western Head Coach Mike Zdebski before his team's 2012 opener. "We still have a lot of improvements to make, but I expect we'll make them significantly." Last season the Warriors stormed to a 7-0 start and won their first Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division title over rival Walled Lake Central. Western then made its second straight state playoff appearance and grinded out victories at home over Huron Valley Milford and South Lyon and a thrilling double-overtime victory over Port Huron to advance to the Division 2 state semi-finals, its first appearance since 2001. However, the Warriors would fall to the eventual Division 2 runner-up, Lowell, in overtime. Now, Western is looking to come back strong in 2012 with only one starter, Josh Jones, returning. But many upperclassmen are also hungry for the chance

to prove themselves in increased roles. The Warriors will employ multiple offensive sets this season, including the Wing-T and Spread offense, along with a 4-4 defensive front. Under center will be junior quarterback and kicker Kyle Bambard (5-feet-9, 175 pounds), who threw for over 800

yards, 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions last year while splitting time with C.J. McGorisk. Bambard also kicked 9 field goals last season, including a game-winning 46-yard bomb against South Lyon and a game-tying 47-yard field goal against Lowell, proving he is the man with the golden boot now being coveted by Bowl Championship Series (BCS) universities. "Working with C.J. last season was a big help and playing into the playoffs gave me confidence that if I do my job, the other 10 (offensive players) will do their jobs," Bambard said. Assistant Coach Bill Larges said Bambard is a tremendous athlete who bench presses 255 pounds and runs a 4.49 in the 40yard dash. "There's a lot of explosive potential in our offense," Larges said. Leading the rushing attack will be senior Melis Kyle Bambard, Johnson (5-feet-9, junior 180 pounds), who quarterback will see increased action after play-

ing just two games last season. In addition, senior Niklas Heglin (5feet-9, 160 pounds) will see if his baseball prowess will assist him on the grid-

Q: Who is your coaching role model and why? MZ: Bear Bryant. I read a lot of books on him. He's a hard worker and a detailed person. Q: What do you enjoy the most about coaching high school football? MZ: I enjoy the lessons that will influence young men for the rest of their lives. Q: Which college or professional player do you wish you could coach? MZ: I'd coach Ray Lewis. His knowledge and love of the game is unsurpassed.

iron at split end, as his hands and speed will be assets for Western. Also returning is senior defensive back Jones (6-feet-2, 210 pounds), who finished with 40 total tackles last season along with two interceptions, a pair of fumble recoveries and 13 deflected passes, in addition to amassing almost 450 yards on kickoff returns. "Our defense will have a lot of speed, along with a lot more dedicaCONTINUED PG. 15

Q: What has been your greatest moment in coaching? MZ: Coaching my son, Brent. That was a lifetime plan. Now I can watch him (at Kalamazoo College).

action as an inside linebacker, while Johnson will be looked upon to step up at defensive end, as well. Western opens the 2012 season with two straight non-league games at home against Saline (Friday, Aug. 24) and South Lyon East (Thursday, Aug. 30). However, Western's matchups this season against city rivals Walled Lake Northern (Sept. 14) and Walled Lake Central (Oct. 5) will be on the road, and the Warriors also face a tough season finale at Northville on Oct. 19. While Western may be lacking in game experience, the Warriors certainly aren't lacking in enthusiasm and dedication, as a new group of players are looking to put their own stamp on the program. ❏ — Michael Shelton

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

Aiming for respectability Lakers' youth balanced by speed, athleticism est Bloomfield is hoping that the third year of the Ron Bellamy era will bring with it consistency and the Lakers' return to respectability. "It's exactly where I thought it would be. My juniors have been in the program for two years and we're at an advantage because we've taught them as we've built the program," Bellamy said. After finishing 3-6 in Bellamy's first season in 2010, the Lakers took a step backwards last season with a 2-7 finish, with one win against Clarkston coming by way of forfeit due to Clarkston using an ineligible player. West Bloomfield was outscored by its opposition 315-175 last season as the Lakers were out-matched by their opposition in the competitive Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Red Division, which includes county powerhouses like Clarkston and Lake Orion. The Lakers have not played in a state

playoff game since 2008, something that they hope will change this season with the return of five starters pining for victories. West Bloomfield's defensive line will see Chance Monarch (6-feet, 185 pounds) return at strong safety, while

senior John Hubbard (5-feet-10, 195 pounds) will return at outside linebacker and junior J.J. Bloom (6-feet-2, 200 pounds) starting once again at linebacker. "I think we're pretty good. We're a young team and we have six sophomores, one freshman and 10 seniors," Monarch said. "We're also a small team, but we'll figure it out." Another returning starter is senior defensive lineman Keith Love, who stands 6-feet-2 and weighs 250 pounds. He will be counted on to be the anchor to help halt the tough offensive units the Lakers will face this season. Speaking of offense, West Bloomfield will welcome the return of senior running back Matt Farrow (5-feetMatt Farrow, 10, 180 pounds), senior who will see increased carries running back this season and is already garnering Division 1 university attention. He will be following in the footsteps of C.J. Brathwaite, who rushed for over 1,200 yards and scored 12 touchdowns

last season before heading out west to play for Washington State University this fall. Also getting some attention in training camp is the Lakers' corps of wide receivers led by two juniors — Brighton

Third Season Q: Who is your coaching role model and why? RB: Lloyd Carr. He's a great role model and he always challenged his players to compete and give everything they had. Q: What do you enjoy the most about coaching high school football? RB: The relationships that are developed. Also, being able to be a positive influence in these student-athletes lives. Q: Which college or professional player do you wish you could coach? RB: I'd rather stay in high school coaching.

Unaegbu (6-feet-1, 180 pounds) and Austin James (6-feet-1, 185 pounds). "Our wide receiving unit is our strongest unit," Bellamy said. "These guys have been playing for awhile, they love blocking and they love getting the football." There's competition for the starting quarterback slot between three players: Monarch, junior Maki Stribling and freshman Trishton Jackson. There's no debate on the offensive CONTINUED PG. 19 ➼

Q: What has been your greatest moment in coaching? RB: Watching former players sign letters of intent to go off to play college football.

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW ➼ WEST BLOOMFIELD FROM PG. 17 line, as junior Austin Vance (6-feet-1, 260 pounds) is an up-and-comer expected to contribute on his move up from the junior varsity team. Bellamy said that West Bloomfield will run a pro-style offense with two wide receivers, two running backs and one tight end, and that he also plans on running a 4-3 defense this season. "This year we have four starters coming back on defense and we J.J. Bloom, have to work on junior securing tackles," linebacker Monarch said. "We're also a young offensive team with a lot to improve on." West Bloomfield opened its season with a non-league tilt at home against Jackson on Aug. 24, before opening OAA Red Division play with back-to-back games against the division's defending

co-champions: The Lakers will first visit Clarkston on Aug. 31 before welcoming Lake Orion on Sept. 7. Another matchup to mark on the calendar is the Lakers' home matchup with Pontiac on Oct. 12, as the last two Chance Monarch, meetings resulted senior in an explosion of strong safety points and Pontiac winning both meetings, 30-28 in 2010 and 66-40 in 2011. Despite a lack of experience and a ton of youth, the Lakers believe they have the speed and athleticism necessary to compete in the OAA Red Division. While the West Bloomfield football program has seen some of his players earn spots on teams at Division 1 universities, it's now hoping to see all its players earn a spot in the state tournament this year. ❏

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

No 'hangover' for the Eaglets St. Mary's team looking ahead, not back rchard Lake St. Mary's ended its 99th season of football by winning its fifth state championship and is now debuting a whole new look for its 100th anniversary. For one, the playing surface is different — as in completely red. The Eaglets recently held a dedication for their new red Fieldturf field that was installed over the summer. The Eaglets are just the third football team in the country to use a red field, joining Eastern Washington University and New Braunfels Canyon High School in Texas, and the field has won rave reviews from players, parents, and alumni. St. Mary's hopes the field will set the tone for the 2012 season after a year in which the Eaglets finally won the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 3 state title after losing in five straight state finals appearances since their state title win in 2000. "I don't want to put too much pressure on them, we just need to take it one game at a time like we've always done and play St. Mary's football," said Eaglets Head Coach George Porritt. The Eaglets return eight starters from last season's championship team, including senior running back Grant Niemiec (6-feet, 220 pounds). Starting at quarterback will be senior Matt Linehan (6-feet-3-inches, 185 pounds), whom Porritt said will be the team's general this season and is looking good so far. 2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

'We're going to the playoffs' Lakers confident last season's woes won't repeat in '12 he 2011 season was disappointing for Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, and its long-time head coach has responded with a new coaching staff made up of some of his former players. "The kids' attitude has to be that they don't want to repeat what happened last season," said Our Lady Head Coach Mike Boyd. Last year saw the Lakers finish 4-5, marking their first season with a below.500 record since 1988, and end their streak of state playoff appearances at 14 consecutive seasons. Now, Boyd is looking to right the ship with a complete overhaul of his coaching staff, which includes former players who were part of his 2002 Division 8 state championship team such as Josh Sawicki, the team's new defensive coordinator. "I was at Kalamazoo Central (High School) for the last three seasons as the special teams coordinator and I did some offensive and defensive line coaching," Sawicki said. "This is a whole new coaching staff. We won 46 games when we played for Our Lady." Joining Sawicki are new assistant coaches Greg Glover, Mike Schiano, Mark Smith, and Mo Fase.

a lack of experience this season, according to Boyd. Ross is one of only three starters returning on offense this year, as he will play at split end, while Chris Donohue (6-feet, 205 pounds) will be moving from center to offensive guard and Andrew O'Bryan (5-feet11, 220 pounds) will return at offensive guard. Ross finished with 153 total tackles last season along with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, in addition to catching 24 passes for 286 yards and 4 touchdowns. He is being heavily recruited by a number of schools, including Ivy League schools Yale and Harvard, which Sawicki said have shown a strong interest in the 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior. After missing three games last season due to injury, Jake Mitch Lasceski, Doetsch (6-feet1, 200 pounds) senior will play at runrunning back ning back, while Richie Cross (5-feet-8, 170 pounds)

and Mitch Lasceski (5-feet-11, 185 pounds) will also add to the running game. Sophomore Sal Mastromatteo will be the starting quarterback after seeing some action as a freshman last season. "The offensive Jake Doetsch, line is pretty senior much new," Boyd defensive end said. "We'll run multiple offensive sets, 1-back, 2back, 3-back." On defense, Doetsch and Lasceski will play at defensive end while Ross will be at linebacker. Cross and Blake Beauchamp will also play at defensive end. Boyd said he was hoping to have some more definitive answers on the rest of his defensive starters after a team scrimmage held prior to press time. "I hope our offensive and defensive lines are strong because we have to win the battle in the trenches," Boyd said. CONTINUED PG. 27

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW ➼ ST. MARYS FROM PG. 21 St. Mary's will open the season with two tough matchups on the road, beginning at Muskegon on Aug. 24 and ending with a trip down to Ohio to face Toledo St. John's Jesuit on Saturday, Aug. 31. Secondary School of Ontario, Canada. St. Mary's is also the defending champion of the tough Detroit Catholic

League Central Division, which includes Division 1 state runner-up Novi Detroit Catholic Central and Division 2 state champion Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice. The Eaglets' Catholic League schedule sees them Sean Bauer, visiting Brother senior Rice (Sept. 29) linebacker and Warren De La Salle (Oct. 6) before hosting Catholic Central on Oct. 12. Porritt said that the 100th anniversary celebration will not dampen the Eaglets' resolve this season. "I think it's our tradition, and they take pride in performing every game," he said. "The seniors have that goal and the others fall in line." With that in mind, it would be hard to bet against the Eaglets returning to Ford Field this November. ❏

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

Grit, toughness keys for Fahr Mott looking to surprise doubters under new coach aterford Mott is hoping that the hiring of a former U.S. Marine as its new head coach will bring toughness, structure, discipline, and a winning tradition back to the Corsairs. Chris Fahr, a Michigan native whose residence is not far from Mott's campus, is now looking to turn the Corsairs from pretenders to contenders. "I want us to be a tough-nosed football team that plays the game the right way, keeps their mouths shut, and plays extremely hard," Fahr said. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Fahr was a volunteer coach for Huron Valley Lakeland in 1999 and an assistant coach for Pontiac Central's 2000 squad before joining Birmingham Seaholm's coaching staff in 2001, where he later served as head coach from 2005 to 2010. Last season, Mott finished 2-7, marking its fourth consecutive season with a sub-.500 record. The Corsairs have had a 6-29 record from 2008 to 2011, including a winless 2010 season. One highlight from last season was Mott's 21-0 shutout of rival Waterford Kettering, breaking its twogame losing streak to the Captains. Mott last made the state playoffs and finished above .500 in 2007 when

"We are also bringing a different mentality to the defensive side of the ball that will be a more aggressive style of play." Everitt added that the coaching staff thinks Mott's whole offensive

"Our linebacking core is a very speedy, aggressive group that will go sideline to sideline and we think will make some very big plays for us this year," Everitt said. Mott's non-league schedule includes a road matchup at Wayne Memorial (Thursday, Aug. 23) and a home test against Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) Central Division champion Northville (tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 30). 2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

Taking it one game at a time Kettering yearns for success after lackluster seasons ith its former assistant coach now at the helm of the program, there is renewed optimism at Waterford Kettering heading into the 2012 season. Kyle Schultz is entering his first season as head coach of the Captains after spending the previous two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Pontiac. Prior to his stint with the Phoenix, he was a Kettering assistant coach from 2004 to 2009 under then-head coach Matt Topie. "We've got a lot of young players and underclassmen who want to win games and they're very receptive of changes," Schultz said. "We have 70 guys as we head into scrimmages, and we've had a good summer. During the summer, we've been working out four times a week and we recently had a four-day camp with 140 guys and some 7-on-7's in Fenton." The huge turnout, the players' attitudes and Schultz's sense of optimism appear to be the first steps in what Kettering hopes will be the start of a renewal for its football program, after the Captains suffered a winless season last year. Kettering's 7-2 finish in 1998 marked the last time it made the state

as they did not score 20 points in a single game. Now, Kettering is bolstered by returning three-year starter and senior Alec Spurlock (5-feet-8, 175 pounds), who will play both at running back and defensive back, while junior Brett Reynolds (5-feet-11, 240 pounds) is also back after starting last season. "It's been a very positive training camp," Spurlock said. "It's better than the last two years. I have (Schultz) as a teacher and I had a good feeling he would be hired. It's hard-working and there's a lot Alec Spurlock, of good team chemistry and senior running back/defensive the team bonding is much closer." back Spurlock added the team's booster club sponsored a bowling outing for the team and that players are doing little things such as eating lunch together. Senior Brandon Thompson (6-feet,

200 pounds) will play at both running back and linebacker this year, while the offensive line will be headed by junior Alex Inglsbee (6-feet-3, 230 pounds) and senBrandon ior Justin Costigan (6-feet, Thompson, senior 220 pounds). running back/ The starting linebacker quarterback for Kettering will be junior Danny Hubbell (6-feet-3, 200 pounds), while his targets will include sophomore wide receivers Danotiss Smith (5-feet-8, 180 pounds) and Kakuan Williams (6feet-4, 200 pounds). On defense, junior Matt Okaiye (5feet-10, 200 pounds) returns as a starting defensive lineman. He is joined by senior defensive lineman Tommy Edwards (6-feet, 240 pounds). In addition to Thompson at linebacker, sophomore Austin Wood (5feet-10, 175 pounds) will be another CONTINUED PG. 35

Schultz said the Captains will

employ a double Wing-T offense and a 5-2 defensive set during the 2012 season.

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW "We're going back to an upbeat WingT offense, no-huddle in some cases, for a faster tempo," said Kettering Assistant Coach Jim O'Leary. "Defensively, we're going back to a five-man front. The kids have totally bought into the system and have put a lot of time in the weight room and at camp." "Our skill positions are really strong, but we lack in size and have lots of inexperience, so it depends on how fast they get used to game speed," Schultz said. The Captains opened the season on the road against South Lyon East on Friday, Aug. 24 before hosting South Lyon tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 30. Kettering then opens up Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division play at home against Walled Lake Central on Friday, Sept. 7, while its annual matinee matchup against rival Waterford Mott is on the road on Oct. 6. "We're taking it one game at a time," Schultz said. "Our early schedule is favorable so you never know." ❏

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

Eagles relying on size, speed Brawn makes up for what Lakeland lacks at key spots

T

CoachEs’ Q & A

hree consecutive seasons without a state playoff berth has Huron Valley Lakeland looking to soar in

2012. "We want to stay humble but excited," said Lakeland Assistant Coach Danny Taylor. "We've just maintained a good attitude and everyone wants to work hard, whether it's in conditioning or drill work." The Eagles finished 4-5 for the second time in three seasons last year after a 5-4 record in 2010. Last season also saw Lakeland lose to rival Huron Valley Milford, as well as see its five-game winning streak against Bogie Lake Road neighbor Walled Lake Northern snapped. Lakeland is looking to return to the state playoffs since its magical 2008 season, its third straight playoff appearance, in which it defeated Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice at home to win its first district championship. Now, the Eagles come back reloaded

and retooled with eight returning starters on offense and seven on defense. Retuning to play on both sides of the ball will be Lakeland's stellar senior Anthony Waite (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) at running back and defensive end. Waite rushed for 709 yards and finished with 66 total tackles on defense last season

From left to right, Josh Lowe, Justin Bafus, Dave Brown, Brad Govan and others line up for a kickoff during a recent Huron Valley Lakeland practice. Lockard)

with two fumble recoveries. "Anthony has a nose for the football and has great instincts," said Head Coach John Maltese. "He is an explosive, tough runner with speed." Waite said that the Eagles hit training camp this year with a more positive attitude. "We're pretty up-tempo and more aggressive and we're better conditioned," he said. "We hit the weight room every day." Christian Gojcaj (5-foot-10, 170 pounds) is a junior who will also look to get some carries, as well as 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior Jack Flynn. Gojcaj will also play at defensive back, while Flynn (43 total tackles in 2011) returns at linebacker. Starting at quarterback will be junior Ross Heiman, who played backup to Casey Palanca last season while also playing at split Christian Gojcaj, end and in the junior secondary. Meanwhile, defensive back Lakeland's offensive and defensive lines are loaded, with 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior Zach Fedorko (offensive guard/defensive

tackle); 6-foot-5, 270-pound junior Ryan Kelly; and 6-foot-7, 315-pound junior Kevin Kwapis looking to intimidate and establish their dominance over opponents this season. "Zach combines his quickness, strength and football instincts to become a force on both sides of the ball," Maltese said. "Ryan uses his size and tremendous strength and menZach Fedorko, tal toughness to become a domisenior nate player in the guard/tackle county. Kevin has excellent agility for a player of his size, and will use this combination to become an anchor for our offensive line." Brandon McDonald, a 6-foot, 220pound senior, will also return at both offensive guard and linebacker. "I think it helps us that we have size," Fedorko said. "We've worked out a lot." Seniors Andrew Laverence (6-foot-5, 195 pounds) and Justin Bafus (6-foot2, 190 pounds) are back to helm both the tight end and defensive end spots. Bafus finished with 29 solo tackles and CONTINUED PG. 39 ➼

John Maltese Eleventh Season Q: Who is your coaching role model and why? JM: Coach Bob LaPointe, who was the head coach at Harper Woods Notre Dame when I was young. He had great communication and knowledge. Q: What do you enjoy the most about coaching high school football? JM: Working with the young men and showing them that there are life lessons in football that are important. Q: Which college or professional player do you wish you could coach? JM: Brian Urlacher (of the Chicago Bears), because of his tenacity, passion, and football intelligence. Q: What has been your greatest moment in coaching? JM: When Lakeland defeated (Bloomfield Hills) Brother Rice (in the 2008 district final).

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW ➼ LAKELAND FROM PG. 37 2.5 sacks last season. Juniors Austin Yeomans (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) and Brad Govan (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) are two more returning starters who will see time at tight end. Yeomans will also look to improve on his four sacks from last season at defensive tackle, while Govan will play at defensive end.

From L to R, Anthony Waite, Zach Fedorko, Ryan Kelly, and Kevin Kwapis. (Photo/Amy K. Lockard)

While Maltese said his offensive and defensive line will be his team's strengths this season, he also admitted that lack of depth in key positions will be an obstacle

Lakeland will have to overcome. The Eagles face a tough start to their schedule, which began with two non-conference games at Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) Central Division champion Northville on Aug. 24 and the home opener Brad Govan, against Novi tomorjunior row, Thursday, Aug. tight end 30. Lakeland then opens up its KLAA North schedule at home against defending division champion Walled Lake Western on Friday, Sept. 7. The Eagles close out the regular season with home matchups against rivals Walled Lake Northern (Oct. 5) and Huron Valley Milford (Oct. 19). But with a lot of size and strength to its advantage, Lakeland looks like a division contender on paper and now it's up to the Eagles to make it a reality. ❏

2012 KICKOFF PREVIEW

Depth, ground game critical Mavs hunger for hardware after return to playoffs he return of Head Coach Pat Fox last season brought with it Huron Valley Milford's return to state playoff football. Now, the Mavericks want to return to winning championships. After a two-year absence, Milford advanced to the state playoffs last season, but fell just 7 points short to Walled Lake Western in an opening pre-district matchup in which the Mavs had the ball at the Warriors 5-yard line with 10 seconds left in the game but were unable to convert. Milford finished in third-place in the ultra-competitive Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) West Division last season under Fox, who was Milford's head coach from 2000 to 2006 before relinquishing his post in 2008 and then returning last season. Among the highlights from 2011 was the Mavs' 27-20 victory over rival Huron Valley Lakeland, which clinched a state playoff berth and also avenged their heartbreaking 1-point defeat to the Eagles in 2010 that kept them from their playoff-clinching sixth victory. The Mavs now look to put last season's playoff disappointment behind them as they will be led by senior quarterback Alex Larson (6-feet, 170 pounds), who threw for 1,200 yards and

rushed for 970 yards last season. "(For us to succeed in the state playoffs), it's going to take more hard work, putting more time in, and becoming more of a team to overcome adversity and help us to become better," Larson said. "We're all getting along and everyone is becoming more of friends."

Huron Valley Milford took third-place in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association West Division last year, and the Mavericks will employ a zone-read scheme on offense this season with senior quarterback Alex Larson, who threw for 1,200 yards last season, at its helm. Last season, Larson was complemented by Brandon Wallace, who had 1,270 yards rushing, and Chris Orr, who had 31 catches and six touchdowns. This season, Larson will be assisted by the talents of senior tight end Brandon Williams (6-feet, 185 pounds), senior wide receiver Darrion Spencer (6-foot-1-inch, 180 pounds) and junior wide receiver Thomas Woodrow (5foot-10, 170 pounds). After missing most of last season, senior running back Rob Ritchie (5foot-10, 165 pounds) is expected to have more carries this season. "We bring back our starting quarterback, we have a good run game and depth at the skill positions," Fox said. Heading up the offensive line will be senior right tackle Derrick Newman (6-foot-5, 310 pounds) and senior guard Jarred Jackson (6-foot-2, 270 pounds). As for Milford's defense, a pair of junior inside lineAlex Larson, backers, Daniel senior Wallace (6-foot-1, 235 pounds) and quarterback Cameron Bell (6foot-1, 205 pounds), are receiving a lot

of attention from Fox. "I like our linebackers," he said. "Cam played a lot after coming up from junior varsity last season and Danny had a dislocated ankle last season, but he looks good so far." The defensive line will be headed up by Jackson and Newman, along with senior Derrick Newman, lineman John senior Ernst (6-feet, 210 right tackle pounds) and junior lineman Korey Clark (5-foot-11, 215 pounds). "Korey is a wrestler, he keeps low and has a good center of gravity, good footwork, and he's exceptional with his balance," Fox said. "We have nice offensive and defensive lines, but they're not as deep as they were last year." Senior cornerback Anthony Dawson (6-foot-2, 175 pounds) is also expected to play a big role in the Mavs' secondary. Fox said Milford will employ a zoneread scheme on offense and an even front on defense. Milford opened the season at home CONTINUED PG. 42
