HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW – HOOPS

Eagles, Mavericks, and Eaglets Huron Valley Lakeland Head Coach: Bob Brugger,

Twelfth Season Assistant Coaches: Ronald Lund, Kyle Sharrard, Brian Ives

Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Our leading returning player is junior Chuck Sanders. Chuck averaged 10 points per game and 7 rebounds as a sophomore last season. Chuck is an extremely athletic player that is capable of highlight reel finishes above the rim. I look forward to watching him mature and improve his ball handling skills. Casey Palanca is the only other player that received major minutes on last season's team. Casey is a very hard worker that brings a blue collar mentality to our team. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should watch? We have 3 sophomores that will receive major minutes this season. Nick Troxell is a 6-3 forward that is extremely versatile and capable of scoring in a variety of ways. Bradley Govan is a 6-4 center that plays very physical in the post and has the ability to dominate on the boards. Ross Heiman is a 6-foot guard that can provide

Q

Huron Valley Milford Head Coach: Chip Lutz Fifth season Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? After losing Junior point guard Alex Larson, to a season-ending wrist injury during football, we will be counting heavily on our senior class: Brandon Wallace, Steven Sloboda and Chris Orr. As a Junior, Wallace averaged about 6 points per game. He will be relied on heavily to handle the ball in the full court, run the offense and be a scoring threat for us from the perimeter. He has the ability to stress the defense by attacking off of the dribble. Sloboda averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds per game last season. We will count on him to be a physical player in the lane. We will need him to be a scorer from the low post, as well as an excellent rebounder. Chris Orr is our vocal leader and our spark. He will be relied on to guard the other team's best player and to take on the new role of being an offensive threat. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition?

Q

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Head Coach: George Porritt,

19th season Assistant Coaches: Todd Covert, Leonard Karschnia, Lamon Mathison Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Senior posts Justin Barrows and Danny Furlong, both 6-7, are returning to provide interior defense, rebounding and scoring. Barrows also shoots the three-pointer well. Senior Forwards Ethan Woelke (6-4) and Chu Ukandu (6-2) logged plenty of minutes last year and both score inside and outside, as well as rebound the ball well. Senior Mason Porritt (5-10) is a defensive specialist who provides great ball-pressure and has improved his offensive skill-set in directing the offense. Junior Sam McClendon (6-1) has added strength to his frame and could be primed for a break-out season. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for? Junior Matt Linehan (6-2) had a very good summer and is a fine perimeter shooter. Juniors Jack Austin (6 feet) and Sean Bauer (6 feet) have gained experience and should grow into their roles after spending last year as key players on the junior varsity.

Q

scoring from behind the arc. These three sophomores will have some growing pains throughout the season but provide a very bright future. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? Our athletic front court. I really feel that we will be able to rebound with any team in the county. Offensive rebounding will be a key to our success this season. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? Our guards and developing more of a leadership role on our team. Troy Baertson is a very talented and skilled point guard that will have a chance to lead and keep our team organized. The development of leadership within our team will be the underlying factor in how successful we are.

Q

Q

Our biggest strength will be our physical nature of play and our solid defensive fundamentals. We will be a gritty bunch on defense that forces teams to execute well offensively in order to score. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? Our biggest need will be developing scorers. We graduated about 65 percent of our point production from last year. We will need some of our younger players like Josh Corey, Jacob Lee and Jason Hugan to develop into consistent offensive threats. At 6-7, sophomore center Jason Hugan is developing into a more physical and consistent player. He will need to take on a larger role. With the injury to Larson, junior guards Josh Corey and Jacob Lee will be counted on to handle the ball and be scoring threats from the perimeter.

2010-11 Record: 12-11, 5-5

Q

2010-11 Record: 10-11, 3-7

What do you believe are your team's Q biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? Some depth; front court size; senior leadership; and experience after making the State Class A quarter-finals last year. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? Our defense and rebounding need to come together for us to achieve our goals. What are your team's key games on the schedule? We always target the Catholic League Central Division games (U-D Jesuit, Warren De La Salle, Detroit Catholic Central, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, and Birmingham Brother Rice). Tough non-league opponents include Clarkston, Flint Powers, Detroit Country Day, and Detroit Henry Ford.

Eighth Season Assistant Coaches: Harry Glanz, Jay Levine

Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Zac Leimbach — Great athlete and leader that can attack the rim and finish; KJ Schultz — Will assume point guard role and be relied on to be our best guard defender; Tai Abiola — Combines size and strength. Will be a very good inside threat on both ends of the floor. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for? Brett Gustufson — Very good shooting range; Charles Taylor — Transfer student that will be a strong scorer and inside threat. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? Will have a good combination of size and speed. Should be able to defend all five positions well.

Q

In what areas do you feel that your Q team needs improvement? We need to develop team chemistry very quickly as we have several newcomers and role changes that need to learn the system. What are your team's key games on the schedule? Every game is key; however, we want to compete for the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division championship. What are your team's goals for this season? Compete for league and district championships.

Third Season Assistant Coaches: Steve Smith, Josh Chesnut, Eric Throgmorton, John Minna, Jason Rennie

are your key returning players on your team this Q Who season and what should we expect out of them? Jared Sheena, 5-8 senior point guard: I expect Jared to continue to score for us, but I look for him to be more of a playmaker. Gage Throgmorton, 6-5 junior guard: He's our most improved player and grew a couple of inches. We look for Gage to continue his pure shooting and create some opportunities. Ryan Soulet, 6-2 senior guard: He gets us going with his energy and leadership. I look for him to move around the floor and play multiple positions on offense and mostly guard the other teams' best players. Kirk Thomas, 6-1 senior forward: He is a true competitor and a guy willing to do all the little things. Leo Susick, 6-5 senior center: We look for Leo to take over the lead on the glass. He’s an athletic big man that runs the floor well and can move to a forward position when needed. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for? Trent Lansaw, 6-4 sophomore forward: Trent is a very smart player that always gets

Q

Walled Lake Western Head Coach: RaRedding Murray,

First Season Assistant Coaches: Wendell Green, Edward Turner, Johnny Daniels

Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? We have one returning starter, Jamall Rhodes. We had a productive summer and will be greatly improved this year. Some of the key players are Miroslov Jaksic, a 6-10 junior forward who is good inside and can step out and shoot. Aaron Prim is a 6-7 senior forward who is good inside and rebounds well. Korey Wade is a 5-10 junior guard who is super quick and is a good scorer. 2010-11 Record: 14-7, 9-1 KLAA North Champs to the right spots. He is a very good shooter with above-average range. Joe Smigielski, 6-3 senior center: Joe gives us depth at the center position. What he lacks in height he makes up for in strength and heart. Brennan Williams, 6-3 sophomore center: He's another big, strong body to help with defense and rebounding off the bench. Evan Shankin, 6-3 senior shooting guard: Evan adds depth off the bench as a flat-out shooter. He will garner more minutes once he learns how valuable he is as a defender and rebounder. Logan Wright, 6-2 junior guard/forward: Logan provides depth at every position except center. What are your team's key games on the schedule? We’re playing a holiday tournament for the first time, Dec. 29-30. The KLAA North is a very balanced division and every game has the ability to decide the division title.

We will look for Khalil to be more aggressive on offense and score more points for us, and get others involved, as well. Brody Losh, senior, 6-6 forward. Brody can affect the game in many different aspects. He can play every position on the floor. He is able to knock down perimeter shots and has good post moves. Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Daryn Byrd is our only returning starter and we expect him to be a leader. He will play both guard spots. We expect him to be one of our leading scorers. Two other kids that return are Nikhil Mankushy and Lawrence Pukhrambam. Juniors Brandon Cole and Malik Humes are expected to step in and play big roles on the team this year. We also have two sophomores that will be playing the point for us — Josh Birnberg and Kevin Byrd.

season as he adjusts to varsity basketball. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? We are taller than we have been in the past. We want to use that to defend and control the glass. I believe another strength could be our experience. We have two players with three years of varsity experience (Khalil Malone, Andrew Hovsepian), return four starters from last year's team, and have other players who have varsity experience. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? Our team needs to work on becoming tougher in every aspect, especially on the defensive end. We will work hard on our rebounding abilities because we believe that will allow us to compete in every game.

Q

Q

We will need to do a good job of playing team defense this season, which I expect will be one of our strengths. Additionally, we also work very hard which may not win you a lot of games, but will definitely keep you in the hunt to be competitive to the end. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? We need to be more patient on offense, as well as read defensive situations more quickly. What are your team's key games on the schedule? All of our games will be key for us as we have a very difficult schedule. We take one game at a time to help prepare us for the state tournament. What are your team's goals? Sustain our effort for a longer period; take ownership for mistakes; work to improve each day; and hold each other accountable to achieve higher standards.

2010-11 Record: 9-11, 4-6

2010-11 Record: 14-8, 9-2 CHSL Intersectional Champions

What do you believe are your team's Q biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? I think that we shoot the ball extremely well as a team and the kids really understand the game. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? We are such a young team with kids that haven't competed at the varsity level and we just need more experience. We are also undersized. What are your team's key games on the schedule? I feel that every game is important, especially with all of our newcomers.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW – HOOPS

Eagles, Mavericks, and Vikings Huron Valley Lakeland Head Coach: Mike Head, Seventh Season Assistant Coaches: Mike Leitheim, Stephanie Williamson, Keith Carroll Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Marlayna Malvich (senior forward), Jessica Haren (senior forward/guard), Jessie Clink (senior guard), and Caitlin Wojichowski (senior guard). Since we essentially lost all five starters from last year, I'm looking to these four to seize the opportunity and make their own impact on our program. Each of them has shown that they are ready to lead this team in competitive situations. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for? Sophomore Dominique Zigo (point guard) is a scoring play-maker who is moving up from JV into a starting role on the varsity this season. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? We always take pride in our defensive effort and physical play. This year's group will

Huron Valley Milford Head Coach: Jennifer VanGoethem Third Season Assistant Coach: Andy Hincka Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Claire Slaughter, 5-7 senior Guard: We are returning only five players from last year, so we are looking for Claire to provide leadership to our young team. She will use her athleticism to create offensive opportunities and her hustle to generate turnovers and steals. Paige Smith, 5-3 junior guard: As a second year varsity player, we will look for Paige to be more comfortable running the offense. Lane Andrews, 5-8 junior guard/forward: We are looking forward to a healthy season. We are very excited to see all of her hard work pay off. Her ability to hit some shots will be a great asset to the team. Lindsay Smith, 5-8 junior forward: Lindsay will provide a tough physical presence in the paint. Becky LaPointe, 5-4 senior guard: Becky's work ethic during the summer will show during this season. Her dedication to becoming a better player will be evident. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for?

Q

Walled Lake Central Head Coach: Michelle Fortier,

First Season Assistant Coaches: Jasmine Bennett, Mark Werner

Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Our key returning players will be seniors Kara Birrell, Brianna Krus, Ciara Sims and Alex Vuichard. They each will be expected to lead the program in every area on and off the court. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for? It's a little early in the season to tell, but Caitlin and Colleen Starrs should provide additional athleticism to our team as seniors. Joanna Finn and Deja Whitner are two sophomores that will provide needed depth and perimeter scoring for us.. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? I believe we have strength and depth at the guard positions which we hope will allow us to extend our defensive and create opportunities in transition.

Q Q

continue that legacy. We want other teams to account for those two areas (defense and physical play) when preparing to play us. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? Our offensive game will be a work-inprogress. Also, we'll need to find ways to get important minutes from our less experienced players. I'd like to see us become a stronger rebounding team. What are your team's key games on the schedule? The KLAA North Division will be more competitive this year than it has in the past three years; so, every one of those games is important. Before the holiday break, we have tough road games at North Farmington and Macomb Dakota, plus back-to-back games vs. Hartland and Milford.

Q

Q

Maddy Kurtz, 5-7 sophomore guard/forward: As a first-year varsity player, we have high expectations that Maddy will learn quickly and use her ability to play multiple positions. Elise Gustafson, 6-foot freshman center: Elise has a lot to learn but her physical presence will be an immediate impact under the basket. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? Dedication, hard work and the ability to play as a team. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? We are a young team, so we will need to overcome adverse situations. What are your team's goals? We want to improve our record from last year and develop our younger players.

2010-11 Record: 16-5, 8-2

Q Q Q

2010-11 Record: 7-14, 2-8

what areas do you feel that your Q Inteam needs improvement? We can always improve in each area, but our success will be dictated on being able to defend and rebound. What are your team's key games on the schedule? Every game is key on our schedule. We look at each game as an opportunity to get better so that when the conference tournament and state tournament arrive, we are playing our best basketball. What are your team's goals for this season? First and foremost, our approach to this season is to get better every day. We want to be competitive in every game and by the end of the season we'd like to look back and see that we've accomplished that and the results will be a reflection of our efforts.

Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Key players returning are Maddie Schram (junior), Julia Venegas (senior), Brooke Schwandt (junior), and Erickah Woods (junior). All of these players have two years of varsity experience behind them and have worked very hard leading up to the start of the season. They've had a very good off season of hard work and hopefully their efforts will pay off with a much improved season over last year. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for? Jayla Nichols (freshman), Shelby Turnquist (junior), and Maddie Klein (junior) should add some more hard work and hustle. 2010-11 Record: 5-16, 2-8 We have a deep team with quite a bit of talent in different areas. This team has the quickness to play an up-tempo style of play but also the inside-out game to play in the half court. We should match up well with a variety of playing styles this year. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? We’ve been working hard at focusing on doing the little things that set apart a good team from a great team. Sustaining effort and execution for an entire game has been a primary focus for us. We are hoping to utilize our experience more to help our poise in key moments of a game. What are your team's key games on the schedule? All the North Division games. It's a tough division with two cross-town rivals, as well as a talented Waterford Kettering that we'll face.

a junior who is a tough defender with excellent anticipation. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? Our seniors have done a great job in getting ready for this season, they have been excellent workers and leaders who work to make everyone better. What are your team's key games on the schedule? We play some very good teams early to prepare for the league schedule: We open with Avondale, who is always very competitive. Over Christmas break we are playing two games in the highly-regarded Motor City Roundball Classic. We hope this gives us a good idea of where we are in comparison to high-quality teams and what we need to improve upon.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW – HOOPS

Corsiars, Lakers, and Lakers Waterford Mott Head Coach: Michelle Sklar Second Season Assistant Coach: Nicole Greer Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? Lauren Hung is a sophomore guard who averaged 9.6 points a game as a freshman. She is great at attacking the basket and a solid all-around player. Rachael Waynick is a junior point guard who got heavy minutes last year. Her experience playing last year will hopefully come into play. She averaged 5.8 points per game. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should watch? Carly Banchiu is a returning starter at the center position. She led the team in rebounding last year averaging 8 rebounds a game. We are looking for Carly to contribute more on the offensive end this season. Claudia Crake and Devin Schomberg should both be key role players. They are both forwards who got a decent amount of minutes on varsity as sophomores. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition?

Q Q

Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes Head Coach: Steve Robak Fifth Season Assistant Coach: Paul Robak Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? We have four returning players that played significant minutes on last year's team and one transfer that will be eligible in January. Carlee Cottrell, senior guard: Carlee was one of our leading scorers last year. Ava Doetsch: junior guard: Ava is a very good all-around player and we plan to use her speed on offense and strength on defense. Lexie Robak, junior guard: Lexie was our best 3-point shooter last season and has excellent range. Jessica Parry, junior guard: Jessica came off the bench last year and provided energy and rebounding instantly. Her motor is always running. Tori Duffey, senior guard: Tori transferred to Lakes last April from Walled Lake Central. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should watch? We have seven new players to the varsity this year and it will be interesting to see who comes out of this group to provide us important minutes in a role situation.

Q

West Bloomfield Head Coach: Steve Larkin Fourth Season Assistant Coach: Steve Nemer Who are your key returning players on your team this Q season and what should we expect out of them? We return three starters from last year's team and these three were three of our top four scorers from last year's team. They are Ashley Zeigler (junior), Sydni Davis (junior), and Kheri Motley (junior). These three guards are very talented and we will rely on them heavily throughout this season. Who are some up-and-coming players on your team that we should be on the lookout for? Ryan Whitaker, Jenny Cabaravdic, Melissa Christenson, and Alaina Skotak are seniors who were on the team last year but will be put in starting or leading positions this year. All are good ball players and will be counted on. What do you believe are your team's biggest strengths that will set you apart from the competition? We are very skilled at the guard position. Kheri Motley and Sydni Davis, who are

Q Q

We are athletic and should be able to get up and down the court and also defend. We are returning six varsity players who all got a lot of playing time last season. This being their second year of running our offense and playing in the same system we are hoping to see a lot of improvement. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? Our biggest weakness is size and rebounding. What are your team's key games on the schedule? Our first league game against Lakeland. I think all league games are important, and of course the Kettering game. What are your team's goals for this season? To finish in the top two in our division and to finish at least .500.

Q Q Q

We are expecting Anna Robb, a sophomore guard, to provide good defense and to use her speed on offense to get up the floor for easy baskets. We'll need one or two from this group to provide the defense, rebounding and energy we lost from last year's team. In what areas do you feel that your team needs improvement? Rebounding is going to be a huge key. We are a very small team, so if our girls don't make it a focus to rebound, we lose the advantage of using our team speed. When we do rebound, we are athletic and know how to get the ball. What are your team's key games? Our biggest game in the league is Cardinal Mooney, but we also have tough non-league games to help get us ready for the post-season, including Divine Child, Regina, Ladywood, and Saginaw Nouvel.

2010-11 Record: 4-17, 4-16

juniors, have been starting on the varsity since their freshman year and I think the experience coupled with their competitiveness gives us an advantage. Other guards like Ashley Zeigler and Melissa Christenson are athletic and will allow us to play a fast tempo style, which I like. The other starters all have played varsity previously, which is comforting as a coach knowing that the girls understand coaches' expectations. What are your team's key games on the schedule? We moved up a division this year after going 17-5 last year in the OAA White Division. We are now playing in the OAA Red division with opponents like Clarkston, Pontiac, Southfield Lathrup and Avondale. These games will test us each night.
