The West Bloomfield Lakers finished 3-6 in Head Coach Ron Bellamy's first year last season, with three losses coming by seven points or less against Clarkston, Troy and Pontiac. Although Bellamy characterized the 2011 Lakers as being a young team, he indicated that they're not without solid senior leadership this year. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)

Developing focus, discipline Lakers working to pull out wins in close games est Bloomfield hopes that year two of the Ron Bellamy project will mean a rise up the ranks in the Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Red Division. "They're competing and doing everything that the coaches give them," said West Bloomfield Head Coach Ron Bellamy. "We're a young team and we're bigger up front. Our weakness will be replacing the many seniors that graduated." The Lakers finished 3-6 in Bellamy's first year last season, with three losses

W

coming by seven points or less against Clarkston, Troy and Pontiac. "We want to win those close games and we need to be more focused to do that," Bellamy said. "We want year two of the project to have more details and discipline." Taking the snaps under center for the Lakers will be senior quarterback Daryn Byrd, while his main targets will be returning wide receivers Connor LaPorte and Cortez Hardrick, who are also seniors. "Daryn is looking solid, he's a dualthreat quarterback and we're excited about what he'll bring," Bellamy said. Seniors Bejon Dees and Kimani Elliot are also two receivers to watch, according to Bellamy, as the Lakers

will run a spread offense. Bellamy added that Dees can also play at quarterback. Senior running backs CJ Bratwaite and Jalen Campbell will also be part of the Lakers' spread offense while senior offensive guard Zach Sneor and senior center Zach Root will head West Bloomfield's offensive line. The Lakers will also run a 4-3 defense, with senior middle linebacker Michael Okorn returning as a starter. Senior defensive back Kimani Elliot is a player to watch, according to Bellamy, along with David Hunter at defensive back. West Bloomfield opened its season on Aug. 25 against Farmington and will play its home opener on Sept. 1

against Clarkston in an early, key OAA Red matchup. The Lakers' OAA portion of the 2011 schedule also includes home games against defending Division 1 state champion Lake Orion on Sept. 16 and Troy on Sept. 23. West Bloomfield will also play on the road against another state playoff team from last season, Rochester, on Oct. 6; and will wrap up the regular season on the road at Pontiac on Oct. 21. "We have solid senior leadership and I believe we will have a great season. Our boys have been working very hard and want to be successful," Bellamy said. â?? — Michael Shelton

2011 KICKOFF PREVIEW

St. Mary's still title contender? Eaglets reload with star power, strong work ethic rchard Lake St. Mary's finished as a state runner-up for the secondstraight year in 2010 and the Eaglets are hungry to finally hoist a championship trophy at Ford Field. "It's just the tradition. The kids play hard and play tough football week in and week out and do a good job of it," said St. Mary's Head Coach George Porritt. "I thought we've been pretty good and giving maximum effort (during training camp)." The Eaglets finished last season 11-3, with two losses coming against Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice, including the Prep Bowl at Ford Field. The third loss came against East Grand Rapids in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 3 title game at Ford Field, marking the third time in four years the Pioneers have tasted a state title at the Eaglets' expense. St. Mary's is regrouping for 2011 having played scrimmages against Clarkston, Grand Blanc and Sterling Heights. The Eaglets' biggest impact player in 2011 is senior linebacker James Ross, who led St. Mary's in total tackles last season with 59.5 while also garnering 4 sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss. However, Porritt said Ross — who has committed to the University of Michigan — has been dealing with hamstring issues during training camp and that his status for the beginning of the season is unknown. "We have to have him out there. He's one of our captains," Porritt said. Ross' fellow linebackers include seniors David Talley (7 sacks), Joe Eroyan (4 sacks) and Dylan Zerki (46 total tackles). Senior Claudio Jeberaeel will head the defensive line while senior cornerback Charlie Ciuni will be key in the secondary. On offense, senior Spencer McInnis and Keith Stonestreet will be the primary running backs while senior Grant Niemiec returns at fullback after scoring 13 touchdowns, falling just short of 1,000 yards last season. Senior Dan Clements and junior Matt Linehan are battling for the starting quarterback job while sophomore Jalen Watts-Jackson and senior Chris Woolen are standing out at wide receiver. The offensive line will be patrolled by

The Eaglets of Orchard Lake St. Mary's have a tough schedule this year as they look to return to the state championship game for the third year in a row. Head Coach George Porritt said his players gave "maximum effort" during training camp, which included scrimmages against Clarkston, Grand Blanc and Sterling Heights. After opening the season at Grand Rapids West Catholic on Aug. 26, St. Mary's will play its home opener against Toledo St. John's Jesuit on Friday, Sept. 2.

Near the end of the season, the Eaglets will face a murderer's row of Catholic League rivals with home matchups against Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (Sept. 30) and Warren De La Salle (Oct. 7), and trip to Shamrock Stadium to face Novi Detroit Catholic

Central (Oct. 15). "I think we have a good football team, but it's a tough schedule," Porritt said. "I'll put my schedule up against anyone's. We just have to take it one day at a time." ❏ — Michael Shelton

The Eagles of Huron Valley Lakeland have a strong offensive line led by senior guard Zach Fedorko, junior guard Michael Sullivan, and sophomore tackle Ryan Kelly, all of whom are returning starters who will be protecting starting senior quarterback Casey Palanca. On defense, senior Austin Bills returns at tackle, junior outside linebacker Anthony Waite is back and will be joined at linebacker by Josh Orlando, while Fedorko and Sullivan will also help anchor the defensive line. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)

'Not where we want to be yet' Eagles covet return to playoffs after two-year absence fter finishing just above .500 last season, Huron Valley Lakeland is looking to get over the hump and return to the state playoffs. "We've progressed. We're not where we want to be yet, but they've worked hard and we'll have to play well out of the box," said Lakeland Head Coach John Maltese. "We've been missing the injury bug, knock on wood." The Eagles finished 5-4 last season and 3-2 in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division, but missed the playoffs for the second-straight year. This year, the Eagles have a strong

A

offensive line led by senior guard Zach Fedorko, junior guard Michael Sullivan, and sophomore tackle Ryan Kelly, all of whom are returning starters. They will be protecting starting senior quarterback Casey Palanca, who just finished short of passing for 1,000 yards last season. "Casey has the ability to read and react to defense. He handles pressure well and is an accurate passer," Maltese said. Alongside Palanca will be two returning starters, senior fullback Josh Orlando, who had 476 rushing yards last season, and junior running back Chuck Sanders, who had 8 touchdowns in 2010. "Josh's tough running style will earn him extra yards and he is sneaky-fast to get into the secondary," Maltese said. "Chuck uses his speed

and size (6-feet-2-inches tall) to make the big play offensively or defensively. Expect 2011 to be a breakout year for him." On defense, senior Austin Bills returns at tackle, having amassed a total of 21 assisted and solo tackles and 4 sacks last season. He will also see time at fullback. "He combines his quickness and strength and became a force on defense," Maltese said. Another player to watch is returning junior outside linebacker Anthony Waite, who had a total of 65 assisted and solo tackles last season. Waite will also see time at running back. "Anthony has a nose for the football and has great instincts. He is an explosive, tough runner with tacklebreaking ability," Maltese said. Orlando will also play at linebacker

while Fedorko and Sullivan will also help anchor the defensive line. Kelly will play at defensive end and Bobby Schumaker will see time at defensive back. Senior Shane Lyons will handle the kicking and punting duties for Lakeland this season. The Eagles opened the season with a tough non-conference slate, which started on Friday, Aug. 26 at home against Northville and continues on Thursday, Sept. 1 at South Lyon. Other key matchups this season for Lakeland include its homecoming matchup against KLAA North champion Walled Lake Central (Sept. 30), the Bogie Lake showdown at Walled Lake Northern (Oct. 6) and the annual season finale at Huron Valley Milford (Oct. 21). â?? — Michael Shelton

Fox back in driver’s seat Coach returns to team he turned into powerhouse e's back. Three years after he resigned from his post, Pat Fox has returned as head coach of Huron Valley Milford and is once again looking to help the Mavericks return to prominence. "It's exciting and its fun," he said. "We have a lot to build on. We have great kids and they're good to work with and I love going to practice." After taking over in 2000, Fox transformed Milford virtually overnight from a long-time doormat to a yearly contender, as the Mavs had six straight winning seasons from 2001 to 2006, including a 10-2 district championship team in 2006. Fox compiled a 50-29 record over eight seasons before relinquishing his post to Jeff Hill in 2008. With Hill now at Royal Oak, Fox said he'll come with a different approach since he last roamed the Milford sidelines. "A lot of things have changed. In 2000, we were a double-slot, triple-option offense. Now we're a shotgun, no-read, nohuddle, up-tempo offense," he said. "We can zone and run more than last year and put the ball up 18 to 20 times and not 30." Last season, Milford started 4-0 only to lose four of their last five games, including Aug. 26 at Waterford Mott, 7 p.m. one-point overtime losses to Howell and Sept. 1 vs. Wayne Memorial, 7 p.m. COACH: PAT FOX rival Huron Valley Lakeland, finishing the Sept. 9 at Grand Blanc, 7 p.m. year 5-4 and missing the state playoffs for NINTH SEASON a second-straight season. Walled Lake Northern's offensive unit meshed well in four pre-season scrimmages, according to Head Coach Brett Moore. He said speed is this year's team strength, but depth is an issue. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)

Getting over the hump Northern's Knights seek first-ever playoff experience alled Lake Northern has been on the cusp of its very first state playoff berth the past two seasons, only to just fall short at the end, a trend the Knights are looking to reverse in 2011. "Our leadership has shined through and we did well in our five-team scrimmages," said Northern Head Coach Brett Moore. "We're as ready as we've been in four years.” Northern recently played pre-season scrimmages against Detroit King, Rochester, Lapeer East and Corunna to

W

prepare for the season. "I thought our offensive line did well and our offense meshed well. I thought our kids pursued well and were moving around the field," Moore said. Last year, Northern had a record of 4-2 with three games remaining, but lost all three to finish 4-5 for a second consecutive season. One person looking to turn things around for Northern is senior quarterback Kirk Thomas, who broke his clavicle in last season's opening game but now looks good, according to Moore. Junior Collin O'Donnell, who filled in admirably for Thomas last year, will be the backup quarterback, but Moore said he should get some

snaps, as well. The two featured backs for the Knights will be senior Ted Lilley along with junior Jake Ginster, both returning starters. Thomas and O'Donnell's main target will be senior wide receiver Ryan Towns. Heading up the Knights' offensive line will be senior guard Jarrett Harmon, along with senior tackle Sheldon Islami. The Knights' defense will be led by linebackers Andy Rabaut, a senior, and junior Mike Peer. The defensive line will be headed up by senior Jim Bartsch, while the secondary will be guarded by junior safety Matt Kosmalski and senior cornerback Ryan Soulet.

The Knights will open their season with three games on the road, at Livonia Churchill (Aug. 25), South Lyon East (Sept. 1) and its Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division opener at Walled Lake Central (Sept. 9). Northern's home opener is Sept. 16 against Waterford Mott, and the Knights will host the annual Battle of Bogie Lake against Huron Valley Lakeland on Oct. 6. "I think our overall team speed and quickness is our strength, but our depth is an issue though," Moore said. "We have to get a couple bounces and stay injury-free. It's going to come down to a couple plays, just like every year." ❏ — Michael Shelton

2011 KICKOFF PREVIEW

A tough act to follow Vikings are more experienced after best season ever ollowing up the best season in a school's history is a daunting task, but Walled Lake Central is looking to prove it's up to the challenge. "We are a playoff football team and we'll be playing in November," said Vikings Head Coach Robert Meyer. In 2010, Meyer boldly predicted his team would repeat as Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division champions. The Vikings not only did so with an undefeated division record, they also won the KLAA Lakes Conference title, won 11 straight after an opening-week loss to Canton, and advanced to the Division 2 state semi-finals for the first time, where they fell to Division 2 runner-up Lowell and finished at 11-2. Meyer said his 2011 team is more experienced because the playoffs gave his players more preparation. "We have a lot of experience returning after a 13-game season last year. We're very fast and intelligent," he said. Returning to start at quarterback is senior Zac Leimbach, who passed for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns and also rushed for 900 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. Also returning is senior running back KJ Schultz, who has rushed for over 700 yards each of the last two seasons. Seniors Curtis Booth and Zach Hill will also be two running backs that will get their share of carries. Heading up the offensive line will be seniors David Eisenberg, Jared Collins, Charles Sovel and Jurgen Collaku. Junior Mike Dobrowolski and sophomore Devyn Bogert will be two players to watch on the line as well. On defense, the linebacking corps will be headed by Sovel and Hill along with senior Adam Kondrat. Schultz will be the key defensive back and will be joined by senior Darrell Williams, while Collins will be the centerpiece of the defensive line. Central opened its 2011 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 25 with a rematch at Canton before traveling to Salem on Thursday, Sept. 1. Central's home opener on Oct. 9 will be against Walled Lake Northern. Warriors have big shoes to fill Western needs game-breakers to step up this year fter returning to the state playoffs last season following a year's absence, Walled Lake Western will look to overcome key losses to have a strong 2011 season. The Warriors finished 7-3 in 2010, rebounding from a 3-6 season in 2009 and making their seventh state playoff appearance in eight years. However, Head Coach Mike Zdebski said the Warriors will need gamebreaking players to step up this season, especially with the graduation of 1,500yard running back Rylan Probst and

A

Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) AllStar free safety Randle Brewer. "The key to the season will be how the players that fill these shoes produce," Zdebski said. The key returning starter for Western will be senior inside linebacker Brent Zdebski, who amassed 149 total tackles last season — with 81 of them solo tackles — and averaged 15 tackles a game in his third season as a starter in 2010. Other key players on the Warriors' defensive squad will be senior outside linebacker Ty Sickler, senior cornerback Gabe Costanzo, inside linebacker Zack Mitchell, and senior outside linebacker and Walled Lake Northern transfer Chris Borgman.

The defensive line will be headed by senior Jason Gamble, who stands 6-feet-3-inches tall and weighs 285 pounds, along with senior Steven Papadimitriou and senior Vinny Gjokaj, who was All-state in the discus and power lift. Starting at quarterback for Western will be senior CJ McGorisk, while senior running backs Connor Ruby and Alex Buchanan will look to fill Probst's shoes. Senior Chris Stepek will play at tight end while Brent Zdebski will also see time at fullback and senior Cam Vieaux will be the primary receiver. The Warriors' offensive line will be anchored by 6-foot, 315-pound senior Kalin Humphries, who will be joined

up front by senior All-state powerlifter Matt Carreathers and seniors Dillon LaFontaine, Austin Sarah and Jason Dryer. Senior Josh Strange will handle the placekicking duties for a fourthstraight season after converting on 21 extra-point attempts and kicking two field goals for the Warriors in 2010. Dryer will handle the punting duties. The Warriors began the season on Aug. 26 at Saline, and will hit the road to face Novi on Sept. 1 and Waterford Kettering on Sept. 9. Western's home opener is on Sept. 16 against Huron Valley Lakeland, and the Warriors will host their annual rivalry game against Walled Lake Central on Oct. 6. ❏ — Michael Shelton

Captains’ goal: reverse trend Kettering aiming for first winning season in 13 years

W

aterford Kettering is looking to move up from kings of Waterford public school teams to Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division contenders in 2011. "We have taken steps to improve our program and will continue to work hard in order to compete in this very talented division," said Kettering Head Coach Mike Fras. Fras took over as Kettering's head coach last year after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes. He was also a former head coach at Walled Lake Northern. Kettering only won one game in 2010 and it came against arch-rival Waterford Mott, marking the Captains' third straight win in the series. Now Kettering looks to reverse a trend of 12 straight losing seasons. The Captains' main weapon will be highly-touted senior running back Justin Santana, who rushed for over 800 yards in 2010 and is aiming for more this year. He will be joined by fellow running back, junior Alec Spurlock. Kettering also has a quarterback battle on their hands with junior Chase Kreilach and sophomore Danny Hubbell competing for the starting job. On the offensive line, sophomore Brett Reynolds will start at center while Aug. 26 vs. South Lyon East, 7 p.m. seniors Danny Stieler and Daulton Arthur and sophomore Matt Okaiye will Sept. 1 at Northville, 7 p.m. COACH: MIKE FRAS return as starting linemen. Depth will help Corsairs Mott looks to prove doubters wrong after 0-9 year aterford Mott may have gone winless in 2010, but second-year Head Coach Keith Garrison said that his 2011 team is heading in the right direction. A couple reasons for that are the team's new defensive coordinator, Marty Castellon, and greater numbers on the team, which will allow players to focus on playing on only one side of the ball. "This allows our kids to play one-way and it really makes our kids better," Garrison said. "We should be healthier and in better shape and more effort

W

should be given because we have more depth. Our coaching staff is in place and we have had a good, spirited training camp." After an 0-9 season last year, Garrison knows not many will take his team seriously, but the Corsairs are looking to prove their doubters wrong. The starting quarterback will be senior Evan Underdown, whom Garrison said has a strong arm and is very accurate. "We were an option team last year, now we're a play-action team and Underdown has improved. This should play to his strengths," Garrison said. Underdown's main targets will be senior receiver Curtis Nash and senior fullback Londo Herrera, while the fea-

tured running backs will be junior Alex Moorer and senior Jacob Amell. Garrison said he hopes his offense will be 50-50 between running and passing the ball. Heading up the offensive line will be five returning starters: senior linemen Vinnie Cervantes and Chris Saikalis, along with junior linemen Ross Miller and Robert Berden, and senior center Josh Rieck. Mott will run a Pressure-8 defense which will include senior linebacker DJ Burnett, junior linebacker Mitchell McBride, senior safety AJ Goff, and senior defensive back Oshea Barton. The defensive line will be led by seniors Ryan Pierce and Jered Irwin. Up-and-comers to watch for on defense include junior linemen Jalen

Wade and Chris Mathews, junior linebacker Matt McCollister, and junior defensive backs Andrew Webb and Eric Munro. Junior Ricky Smith will handle the placekicking duties. Mott opened the 2011 season at home against Huron Valley Milford on Aug. 26 and will next play three straight games on the road. The Corsairs will then host two straight games against Walled Lake Central and Walled Lake Western before playing its annual grudge match at rival Waterford Kettering on Oct. 8. "We have boatloads of senior leadership," Garrison said. "We have to limit turnovers and be good in the red zone." â?? — Michael Shelton

Lakers have hurdles to clear Our Lady must overcome loss of crucial players

W

hile Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes will have to overcome a lack of experience and size to have another successful state playoff run in 2011, the Lakers' addition of a junior varsity team this season is a sign that Our Lady isn't slowing down. "This means we are getting better numbers out for football and they will get more experience with playing time and it will help us down the road," said Our Lady Head Coach Mike Boyd. "We have 56 boys out for football from a pool of about 100." Our Lady won its second consecutive Detroit Catholic League Intersectional 2 Division title last season in addition to making its 14th straight trip to the state playoffs, where the Lakers won their eighth district title in 10 seasons. This year, Our Lady will have to overcome the losses of key players including wide receiver Austin Karbowski, tailback Anthony Caiozzo, and offensive lineman Philip Marcinkowski. The featured tailback in Our Lady's multiple offense will be senior Kevin Mooney, the Lakers' only returning starter in the backfield. Junior Jake Doetsch is also expected to get some carries, along with junior Mitch Lasceski at fullback. They will be aided by an offensive line that includes seniors Adam Figurski and Sean Broderick. Joining them will be junior center Chris Donohue and junior offensive guard Andrew O'Bryan. Our Lady's search to replace Mike Sullivan at quarterback is focused on two upstarts, sophomore Vinny Puma and freshman Sal Mastromatteo. Boyd added that Puma can also double as a running back when Mastromatteo is under center. The main targets for either quarterback will be junior receiver Richie Cross and senior Jake Weir at tight end. On defense, the Lakers will front a 4or 5-man defensive line headed by Doetsch and Weir. Junior Garrett Ross, along with Lasceski, Puma and O'Brien will make up the Lakers' linebacker corps.
