JULY 2012

www.oaklandlakefront.com

T

he 13th annual Quake on the Lake promises to be bigger and better than ever, with worldclass hydroplane boat racing and a strong lineup of entertainment and activities planned. This year's event, which will be held from Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22, will serve as the first American Power Boat Association (APBA) World Championship series event ever held in Michigan. The races will be held on Waterford and White Lake townships' Pontiac Lake at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, located near M-59 (Highland Road) and Williams Lake Road. Last year, Quake on the Lake served as an APBA National Inboard Hydroplane Championship Series event, marking the first such event in Michigan in 42 years. In 2009, Quake on the Lake hosted the APBA Eastern Divisional Championships. "It's an awesome accolade that the APBA has selected us for the World Championships," said Quake on the Lake Board of Directors Chairman Dale Hampshire. "It has a great history the last 12 years. Not only have we hosted the Eastern Divisionals and the nationals in the past with great success, but in the last 12 years (racers at Quake on the Lake have) set 17 world records. And I think the world records and the way we run the event and the course itself says everything about why the APBA chose the Quake to hold the World Championship here." Mary Anne Wilson, Quake on the Lake race chairperson, said that she believes between 80 and 100 teams will be part of this year's event, including boats from Canada, parts of the East Coast and even states like California, Louisiana, Washington, and Colorado. www.oaklandlakefront.com

"The reason they show up is because, like any other race team, they have a budget and they want to get to the races that will provide them the greatest point structures for their season and also to get them in the record books," Hampshire said. "And when you've got a course that's considered one of the fastest 1-mile courses in North America, that's obviously where the racers want to go. They want to be the fastest on the water." All net proceeds from Quake on the Lake will benefit a charity founded by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, The Rainbow Connection, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. In addition, a sixth-grade student from Pontiac named Terryon, nicknamed "TJ," will be this year's Rainbow Connection beneficiary for Quake on the Lake after being diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in February. Since then, he has been receiving treatment for the disease. His wish is to go to Walt Disney World in Florida. "We've given money to the Salvation Army, military K-9 groups around the world, Jaycee's, the Lions Club, and local high school sports," Hampshire said. "We always end up giving money to three or four different groups every year." Food and Entertainment In addition to the exciting racing that will be taking place, this year's Quake on the Lake will have a "Made in Michigan" theme, from the food and beer served to the the music being performed. This year's entertainment headliners will be Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, who will perform a concert on Friday, July 20 at 8 p.m. The tentative entertainment lineup for July 20 is: OAKLAND LAKEFRONT

• Shotgun Willie, 6 p.m.; and • Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, 8 p.m.; The tentative Saturday, July 21 entertainment lineup is: • Good Tymes, 4:30 p.m.; • Shotgun Willie, 6 p.m.; and • Thirsty Perch, 8 p.m. Music is also scheduled for Sunday, July 22, but the lineup and schedule was yet to be released as of press time. For those that want to take a break from watching the boats fly across the lake, the Family Fun Zone will give children a chance to climb a rock climbing wall, come down slides and jump around on bouncers, in addition to getting their faces painted. There will also be vehicle and ski boat displays, as well as high-performance race cars and a silent auction. In addition, the Detroit Pistons Year-Round Hoops Truck is also expected to be at Quake on the Lake with basketball activities, while the Flaming Pistons Car Club will showcase classic cars and hot rods. Hampshire said he expects about 18 vendors will be at Quake on the Lake to sell food and concessions, including hot dogs, barbeque favorites, and ice cream. About 15 more display vendors are also expected to attend, including some of the event's sponsors. There will be a Michigan beer tent serving brews including Kid Rock's American Badass Lager; Diabolical IPA and Black Eye IPA from Traverse City; Lighthouse Amber from Cheboygan; and Saugatuck Blonde from Saugatuck. Also being served at Quake on the Lake will be Towne Club soda and Absopure water from Detroit, www.oaklandlakefront.com

and Great Lakes Chips from Traverse City. The Racing The Pontiac Lake course is recognized as the fastest 1-mile course in North America; 17 world speed records have been broken in 10 classes of inboard hydroplane races held during past Quake on the Lake events. "It's got a natural barrier around the northwest corner of the water, which keeps the wind down and the wind is what creates problems for hydroplane racing," Hampshire said. "The racers know this is a very flat race course for them vs. the Detroit River or something like that. I've heard the racers coin the lake the 'Fastest Glass in North America,' meaning it's the smoothest. They're not afraid to push their boats to the limit." Fans who attend will witness hydroplane racing from classes that will run from 90 mph to those that approach 175 mph in the straightaways. Kevin McGregor of West Bloomfield Township will be participating in the Vintage exhibition with his red 7-liter vintage boat, Miss Lu Lu. He has participated in every Quake on the Lake event since 2007 and he said his boat can reach up to 110 mph. "I basically enjoy the ability to run my vintage boat in an exhibition format on a competitive course, along with the entertainment, the bands, the concessions, and the family atmosphere, and they can have fun, as well, when I'm not in the boat," McGregor said. His brother, Bryan, is a White Lake Township resident who also races a 6-liter vintage boat. Becky Wilson, a 2007 APBA Rookie of the Year and race chairperson Mary Anne Wilson's daughter, will also race in the 1.5-litre class in her boat, Miss Circus Circus. This will be her fifth Quake on the Lake. OAKLAND LAKEFRONT

"The Rainbow Connection makes it special," Becky Wilson said. "I'm very proud to race for that organization and raise money for wherever they want to do." The boat classes competing are as follows: • 1.5-litre stock: minimum length, 14 feet; class letter T or Y; engine, 900 to 1,600 cc with various modifications, methanol or racing gasoline. These are popular, small and economical boats. The 1.5litre stock hydroplanes can hit 95 mph. They are typically powered by 4-cylinder 1200 to 1500 cc Toyota engines and use ordinary pump gas. • 1.5-litre modified: minimum length, 14 feet; class letter T or Y; engine, 900 to 1,600 cc with various modifications, methanol or racing gasoline. These highly-modified, 4-cylinder boats are powered by pump gas or methanol to reach a top speed of 105 mph. • 2.5-litre stock: minimum length, 14 feet; class letter S; engine, stock 2,000 or 2,300 cc 4-cylinder. The 2.5-litre stock class hydro can exceed 100 mph. Powered by 4-cylinder Ford engines (2,000 cc or 2.3-litre) on pump gas, the 2.5-litre affords very exciting side-by-side racing. • 2.5-litre modified: minimum length, 16 feet; class letter A; engine, fully modified 2.5-litre displacement. Engines used are Ford, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Datsun, Fiero, Fontana, and others. The 2.5litre modified racer can hit speeds over 125 mph — creatively. A few restrictions apply. For example, engines must not exceed 166 cl. However, these hydros can use pump gas, methanol or aviation fuel. • 5-litre: minimum length, 16 feet; class letter E; engine, 305 cubic-inch stock Chevrolet or Ford V-8 2, BBI, carb, pump gas. Ford, Plymouth and Chevrolet stock V-8 engines power the 5-litre stock www.oaklandlakefront.com

hydroplanes to speeds of 115 mph. • National Modified: minimum length, 19 feet; class letter NM; engines, up to 368 cubic inches allowed, various modifications, methanol or racing gas. The National Modified hydro offers speeds of 140 mph to the serious competitor. Many engine combinations are possible, from 4-cylinder to 350 ci V-8s. • Grand National: minimum length, 20 feet; class letter GNH; engine, V-8, various modifications up to 468 cubic inches, racing gas. The Grand Nationals are one of the largest and fastest inboard classes. With speeds of 150 mph and 70-foot roostertails, these 20-plus-foot boats are powered by big-block Ford, Chevrolet, Pontiac or Oldsmobile engines. • Grand Prix: Minimum length, 24 feet; class letter, GP; engine, big-block Chevy or Chrysler Hemi. At 170 mph and 510 ci, the Grand Prix hydroplanes are the fastest automotive enginepowered class in the world. • Jersey Skiffs: V-bottom two-person boats with unique design. • Vintage: Antique boats, 30-years-old and older that vary in class. The event schedule for July 20 is as follows: • Happy Hour Hydroplane Hot Laps, 4 to 6 p.m. • Live musical entertainment, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The schedule for July 21 is as follows: • Canadian and U.S. national anthems, 10 a.m.; • APBA Inboard Hydroplane World Championships qualifying heats, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and • APBA Inboard Hydroplane World Championships finals, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The schedule for the July 22 hydroplane racing events is as follows: • Canadian and U.S. national anthems, 10 a.m.; OAKLAND LAKEFRONT

ction Water Sports of Fenton's Mary Rising wants Oakland County's lake denizens to know the family-owned business remains ready to meet all their boating and gear needs. Formerly known as Water Sports Marine and located in the heart of the county's lakes area in Waterford Township, it's situated just south of Fenton under a different name, but still serving Oakland County customers. "We work hard to service the area," she said. "As long as they bought their boat from us, we'll pick up a boat for service and then deliver it back to the owner's driveway at no charge, for as long as they own that boat. We do some mobile service calls, too. We also maintain a presence in the county through the Pine Lake Ski School in West Bloomfield Township. We provide the boats for the ski school and gear in the pro shop." Action Water Sports of Fenton has everything a boater or water sports enthusiast could ever want or need. The business, co-owned by Mary's husband, Gregg, has been selling MasterCraft Boats since 1971 and added Cobalt boats in 2007. "We also have every major brand of waterski and wakeboard equipment," Rising said. "We have clothing, sunglasses, sandals, and Go Pro HD-quality cameras that can be used to film yourself or others doing extreme water sports. We also have indoor and outdoor storage on site." Several brands of standup paddleboards can be found in the expansive pro shop. Rising said customers are welcome to try them out during one of the wakeboard clinics the business holds on Silver Lake. Of course, the business has a parts and service department that can accommodate any brand of inboard boat. Since they have been a MasterCraft dealer since the early 1970s, the staff has retained a lot of knowledge and has kept many hard-to-find parts. "We get calls from dealers across the country looking for oddball parts," Rising said. Action Water Sports of Fenton hosts at least one boater safety certification class each year. Skiing and wakeboard clinics are offered, as is a ladies' boat driving clinic that's presented twice a year. "We have a fun wakeboarding event at our Fenton facility in the pond in front of the store," Rising said. "The wakeboarding is done with a gas-powered winch pulling the wakeboarders across the pond." And the staff doesn't just sell and service boats and gear, according to Rising. "I'd say about 80 percent of our personnel ski, wakeboard or boat," she said. "We're passionate about the sports as actual participants. That gives us a lot of knowledge to be able to better serve our customers." Rising learned to ski at age 9. Less than two months later, she participated in her first Michigan championship event. "I was a three-event skier — slalom, tricks and jumping," she said. "I also did show skiing. My passion now is slalom skiing. "I learned to ski because on the street where I grew up, there was just one other girl there year-round, so I played with a lot of boys," she said. "Two of the 10-year-old boys in the neighborhood learned how to ski, and I didn't want to be left out. A gentleman down the street was in the Silver Lake Ski Club, and he taught us how to slalom, jump and do tricks. He introduced me to the tournaments. The only time I left home during the summer was to go to church, because I didn't want to miss a ski ride." One of Rising's brothers also competed in three skiing events as a youth, while another brother and her sister also became involved in show skiing. "It was something the whole family could be a part of," she said. "My parents did the announcing or handled the food, so show skiing was a great family activity. It was a great way to grow up." Rising has passed along that passion to her daughter, Lindsey, and son, Brad, who each ski, wakeboard, and wakesurf. emocrats Mark Danowski and Jim Nash will square off in the Aug. 7 primary election for the right to challenge incumbent Republican Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner John P. McCulloch in the Nov. 6 general election. McCulloch is unopposed in the primary election. Formerly known as the county drain commissioner, the county's water resources commissioner is responsible for designated surface water drainage systems, sewage disposal and drinking water systems, lake level control structures, and soil erosion and sedimentation control. The water resources commissioner serves a four-year term and is currently paid an annual salary of $138,999. The following are questions our staff recently posed to Nash, and his responses. Danowski declined to participate in our candidate interview process. OL: What's your take on the condition of the dams and augmentation wells that help control some county lake levels? Do you anticipate the need to replace or upgrade existing structures or facilities? What changes, if any, are needed in the way the Water Resources Commissioner's Office handles lake level monitoring and control? JN: They're very well maintained. I don't have anything that gives me the whole view of the whole county. There's issues with some of them, but overall it's fairly well done. It's all done on the basis of charging people who live on the lakes for the levels. Absolutely, infrastructure has to be kept up and replaced from time to time. In a lot of areas in especially the southern part of the county, there's complaints about the way the local governments are treated by the Water Resources Commissioner's Office. They've kind of — at least in several communities that I know of — (the office) treats them not very well. They just leave them out of the process and tell them what they're going to do and that's about it. In terms of countywide, it varies depending on where you are. As we're expanding the suburbs out and doing much more out here, we're ending up taking money from the inner-ring suburbs and spending it on the outer-ring suburbs, which is really not fair at all, and a lot of people are upset about that. OL: Which county drains should be a priority for the water resources commissioner, and what www.oaklandlakefront.com

needs to be done there? Where do you anticipate having to replace entire existing drains, or construct new infrastructure where none currently exists? JN: A lot of it is, again, how the system is aging. One of things I really want to focus on in this campaign is stormwater issues. There are a lot of cities across the country that are changing the way we charge for stormwater runoff and allowing companies and landowners to change the way they've set up their drainage off their properties to lessen their impact. So that means they can, over time, save money on the stormwater costs. Wherever there are impervious surfaces, whether they be roofs or parking lots or roads, you have runoff. And if you can change the perviousness of both roofs through green roofs and bioswales and all the things you can do for parking lots, you can eliminate the runoff from those surfaces. If you can do that, that starts to eliminate the stormwater problem. We can work on that effort through changing facilities, through landscaping, and through all the different things that can be done. Lawrence Tech a few years ago put in a student center where they have basically eliminated runoff in that whole area. They store that water and use it for gray water. There's several cost paybacks on that. You have water that you don't have to pull out of the system for things like watering landscape and things, and you would save money on what you are paying for stormwater runoff control. This would be a program I would be starting. We would look for ways through regional efforts through SEMCOG (the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments), which is doing a lot of work on that. It's called low-impact development, and we would be able to start to eliminate that stormwater problem. This is something that's going to take a long time to do, but we can get the ball rolling and start moving on it much better than it's been done in the past. There's a lot of cost to that. Infrastructure, where it's not been before, is generally speaking the issue of sprawl — where you're sending more and more development out farther into the county into the rural areas. To build that stuff from scratch is very expensive, and the people who are doing the development should be responsible for paying for that cost. They shouldn't have the rest of the county subsidizing growth in outer areas of the county because, in the long run, that's not sustainable. OAKLAND LAKEFRONT

Sustainability is a very important issue to me. I've been talking about sustainability since I first ran (for office) in 2002. We have to do things now and make the planning now to make sure that what we are doing today is not going to cost our future generations something they're going to have to make up in the future. What we have to do is make sure the drains that are now being used are kept up. We have to have maintenance on our infrastructure, and we have to make sure that we do things long-term that are going to make sure our infrastructure stays in the shape it needs to be in. But again, this is something that varies all across the county. We have issues in Walled Lake about weed control, and we have issues along the western part of the county about both drains and how the water is affected by runoff from either impervious surfaces or people using phosphorus lawn chemicals, which causes algae blooms and a lot of problems in our recreational and our drinking water. OL: Many of the county's lakes are vulnerable to contamination either through combined sewer overflows (CSOs) or sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), depending on how sanitary sewer infrastructure is in place across the county. What, if anything, would you do to address this threat if elected water resources commissioner? JN: As I've said in the previous question, it's learning and adjusting to properties to avoid the runoff in the first place. In my city of Farmington Hills, we put in pervious pavement on several of our properties, otherwise before that the runoff in a storm would have gone into the storm sewers and contributed to the overflow. What we're doing by putting pervious pavement on these surfaces is the water is not making it off the surfaces into the stormwater system. And as we have low-impact development, we can use those in new developments or when people are doing landscaping, when they are doing new parking lots, because again, you have to replace parking lots over time. We can do things like have bioswales either within the parking lot or around the parking lot. So whatever runoff comes off them is collected there and then slowly goes into the ground. Only 100-year storms would have stormwater overflow, so it's all in how we plan for the future and how we help companies or developments plan their pervious pavement, pervious surfaces to make sure we don't have runoff from them in the first place. You know we've been keeping up with it with stormwater www.oaklandlakefront.com

fees and trying to control it when it happens, but we need to do so before it happens. OL: Should the Water Resources Commissioner's Office have a broader role relative to general lake issues, such as water quality monitoring, for example, given both the importance of these waterways to the quality of life in Oakland and the the ongoing decreases in state commitment of funds to help protect the waterways? JN: One of the big issues right now to me — and the more I talk to people about it, people are upset, especially in the lakes region of the county — is the fracking leases that have been released and the water quality issues around that. And I want to make sure we do testing of groundwater and of lake water all around these areas because several of these leases are right near the water on Orchard Lake and Cass Lake. That can have serious infiltration underground; or if a well had blown out or something like that, which also does happen, we have to make sure we have really good systems. I would call for a moratorium on actually starting this exploration until we have top-of-the-line resources available to us in case there is a leak or in case there is a blowout, to stop any kind of infiltration into the water systems and to make sure if there is any kind of problem that the people responsible, the people doing the drilling are in fact going to be able to cover any costs to bring our water quality back. So we need serious testing around these areas where the fracking will be, in addition to what has already been done. We must make sure we have a system in place to stop anything in case there is a blowout or in case there is a serious accident. We had the name (of the job) changed to Water Resources Commissioner and these are the water resources we have. The recreational water we have with all these very large lakes and expensive properties around them, if we had a serious problem in one of these lakes, if we had a large fish kill or a large infusion of some of these fracking chemicals into the lake, it could affect property values, it could affect the ability of people to get on these lakes. That would hurt our economy a lot. Our county government takes a lot of pride in our recreational waters, and several years ago we did a study on the impact of our recreational waters on our county economy. It found it's very strong in terms of just having the recreation available to us and as a recruiting tool for companies when they are looking for OAKLAND LAKEFRONT

employees. They can say we have fantastic parks and some of the best lakes in Michigan. So if we really value that, we have to make sure we protect it long-term. And that involves all the levels of protection for the lakes — lake levels, algae, invasive species, and the potential of chemicals coming in through runoff or from fracking. These are our water resources, and I think that's the most important thing the office does besides regulating drains and sewers. OL: What are the three most important issues for the Water Resources Commissioner's Office at this time, and how do you propose to address them? JN: Collaboration within the county and local governments and regionally with Macomb, Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw, Monroe — all the counties in southeast Michigan really have to be working together on this, and this is something I absolutely will be pushing. In terms of mitigating stormwater, that's what I talked about earlier, finding a way to help communities and businesses and even developments control that water before it gets into the system. We need to have the things in place that we aren't doing yet. There's another program that I've been working on and I will make it as much as I can a part of what the Water Resources Commissioner's Office would do. There's a company in Oakland County that has come up with a program that has the technology and everything available to them to start putting in power generating systems along our sewer main. And what this does is it would have little pulloffs along the sewer mains that would bring the wastewater flow through turbines to create power. And this could be done along large sewer lines where you would always have flow. There's constant flow, so there would be the availability of a truly non-environmentally disturbing power source where you could generate power from sewage flow over long periods of time on a regional basis. This has been something I've been working on for quite some time. Again, I've been very involved with sustainability and alternative energy sources. This is something that the water resources commissioner could do in the long-term that would really have an effect on our ability to generate clean power in this region. OL: Why, specifically, should voters choose you over your primary election opponent? JN: Well, I've been involved in politics and government here in Oakland County for many years. This is something that I've been working on www.oaklandlakefront.com

for a very long time — sustainability, and collaboration regionally and among local governments. So it's something I think I've got experience doing. My opponent, who I haven't met but have talked to a few times, he's a very nice guy. He's worked for the water resources commissioner, but he's not got any real government experience the way I have. I've got a fairly good reputation in this area as somebody who is really always ready to work with whoever I can. ❏

n Arkansas man was charged in June by state Attorney General Bill Schuette with 12 felony counts of possessing and selling live Asian carp in violation of a state law protecting against the spread of invasive species. David Costner, 42, allegedly possessed, transported and sold 110 grass carp that were housed in tanks in a semi-truck furnished by parent company Farley's Arkansas Pondstockers. Costner was charged with 10 counts of possession of an illegal species, a felony punishable by two years in prison and a fine of between $2,000 and $20,000 for each alleged violation. He also faces two counts of selling an illegal species, which is also a felony punishable by two years in prison and a fine between $2,000 and $20,000 for each alleged violation. Grass carp, a type of Asian carp, are herbivores and could potentially remove all vegetation from a body of water at the expense of native species, according to state officials. They have been illegal to possess in Michigan for decades. "The reason people are interested in grass carp is that they are voracious eaters," said Debbie Munson Badini, a spokesperson for the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "They could easily clear a small pond, such as a pond on private property, of vegetation. They keep weeds and other unwanted vegetation out of the water. People who get grass carp want to use them for maintenance of their ponds." However, they also pose a threat to native fish species. "While they help clean the pond of unwanted vegetation — which is why they were used in fish farms in the South — they are a threat to our native species of fish," Munson Badini said. "If they get into a

www.oaklandlakefront.com

lake or pond, they could take away important habitats from native fish and other aquatic species that live there." Costner allegedly traveled around the state and sold the illegal carp from store parking lots. According to the DNR, Costner allegedly sold two of the live grass carp to undercover DNR investigators in Midland, Mich. on May 16. "It's common to find people who are selling fish and other aquatic species that you can use in your own private ponds at your house," Munson Badini said. "There are species of fish that do similar things as the grass carp for pond maintenance, and (those species) are legal. You just have to make sure you are getting these fish from a reputable seller such as a licensed fish dealer. But if you're buying something out of the back of a truck, then you have to question if they have a license and (whether they) are selling species that are allowed in Michigan." There are currently four different types of Asian carp listed as invasive species by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service: The bighead carp, silver carp, black carp, and grass carp. oncerns about Asian carp invading Lake Michigan grew in 2010 when the first live Asian carp, a bighead carp, was caught beyond electric barriers in Lake Calumet near Chicago, just six miles from Lake Michigan. The two species that are the main threats to the Great Lakes are the bighead and silver carp because both are found in the Illinois River. Asian carp, first imported to control algae in fish farms along the Mississippi River, escaped during a flood event in the 1990s. Since then, the carp have moved quickly up the Mississippi River and into the

Illinois River, the Des Plaines River, the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, and the Calumet-Sag Channel. sian carp can weigh up to 100 pounds, grow to a length of more than 4 feet, and, on average, eat up to 20 percent of their body weight in food each day. They are also extremely prolific. As such, Asian carp pose a major ecological and economic concern because they would out-compete other Great Lakes fish species. Should the Asian carp get into the state's inland lakes, especially in an area like Oakland County, their impact on the inland lakes' ecosystems could be devastating, as well. "When it comes to the spread of Asian carp, we are very concerned about inland waters," said Tammy Newcomb, the research program manager in the DNR's Fisheries Division. "(Asian carp) can spread from the Great Lakes (into inland waters) just by moving naturally up the waterway. And we know that Asian carp do very well in small inland waters. While a spawning population may not be produced in such waters, if a number of them occupy the inland lake, it could disrupt that system's food web." "Once destructive Asian carp enter our waterways, the damage cannot be undone," Schuette stated in a press release. "We must remain vigilant and use every tool available to protect Michigan's tourism and sportfishing industries from this dangerous threat." DNR Director Rodney Stokes said his department has been aggressively monitoring the trafficking of restricted species since the threat of Asian carp entering the Great Lakes became apparent. "Invasive species in general and the Asian carp in particular pose one of the most serious current threats to the economy and the ecology of the Great Lakes,"

A

www.oaklandlakefront.com

Stokes stated in a press release. "The excellent work in this case by the DNR's Law Enforcement Division is one more indication that we will continue to vigilantly protect the lakes from this menace." While grass carp do not pose the same threat to Michigan's waterways as the bighead and silver carp, they still are a concern due to their propensity to adversely affect good fish habitats. Grass carp have been rarely found in Michigan waters, and those previous cases in which they were found were usually the result of illegal stocking in Michigan ponds or movements from other states where stocking genetically-altered triploid fish for aquatic vegetation control is allowed, according to the DNR. riploid fish are genetically altered to have three instead of two normal sex chromosomes in an attempt to keep them sterile. They are used because they are believed to have a low probability of reproduction. However, there are doubts about the effectiveness of such an approach because the sterilization process may not be 100 percent effective, according to the DNR. Recently, allegedly photographic evidence indicating the presence of grass carp in Marrs Lake in Lenawee County was sent in to the DNR. The Fisheries Division is investigating the report, and an assessment of the lake was planned for June 18 to see if grass carp are present and if they are reproducing naturally. "We've had two grass carp incidents recently, which doesn't happen very frequently," Munson Badini said. Citizens who are aware of the trade or movement of any restricted species of fish in Michigan are asked to call the DNR's 24-hour Report All Poaching (RAP) Hotline at 800-292-7800. â??

recent survey of fish living in the Rouge River documented the first sightings of an endangered species in the river since 2005, an indication of improved water quality and fish habitat. For the first time ever, the Friends of the Rouge (FOTR) group took on college student interns to conduct a survey of the river's fish. According to the FOTR's Volunteer Monitoring Program Manager Sally Petrella, this was "very unusual." "We take on many interns, but they usually work directly on our programs or in our office," she said. "But (student intern) Bob (Muller) approached me wanting to do a survey as he has a lot of experience in sampling for fish and keeping and raising native Michigan fish. He's studying environmental studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and needed an internship. And it worked out really well." However, Muller is not your average college student, at the age of 64. Muller's interest in North American fish began in high school, when he first started keeping them in an aquarium. For the past decade, he has written articles on the captive breeding of these species of fish. However, his experience with fish began when he was a boy netting fish out of the Huron and Clinton rivers. But he had never collected fish in the Rouge River, which inspired Muller to suggest conducting a fish survey there. "Last August, I sampled the Rouge on campus for the Environmental Interpretive Center and, in talking with them, they did not know what species of fish live in the Rouge on campus," Muller said. "I met Sally (Petrella) then and, with my interest in fish and the fact that Friends of the Rouge offices are on campus, I approached them to see if they would like some fish survey work done." "It turned out really well for us," Petrella said. "We actually don't have the capability for fish work at FOTR. But having Bob, he brought his experience and he already had a collection permit from the DNR (Michigan Department of Natural Resources). We had a real need for work on our fisheries. The last fish survey conducted in the Rouge was back in 1995. Before we conducted the surveys this year, we consulted the DNR and DEQ (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) to see how our interns could fill in any gaps they had in the data. Due to decreased funding, the DNR and DEQ have not been www.oaklandlakefront.com

able to do these surveys, so we were hoping ours could fill in the gaps." One of Muller's classmates, Kristina Blott, also showed an interest in helping with the survey, and together they surveyed the river's fish at 22 sites along the Rouge River from May 15 to May 31, documenting close to 4,100 fish representing 23 different species. "With the reputation of the Rouge as a polluted river, the quantity of species we found surprised me," Muller said. "At least in the small headwater streams, the Rouge is relatively healthy, although it's threatened as any time development happens, the normal drainage patterns of nature are interrupted — large amounts of runoff from the street and fertilizer from lawns is a major problem. This is about the largest threat to the fishes — the runoff muddies the water, which is not healthy for fishes. They need clean gravel for spawning. The muddied waters can eliminate the fishes' ability to reproduce." The survey was conducted to help determine the current status of fish in the Rouge River. The two interns collected a wealth of data that will be able to tell the FOTR a lot about the river. A few times a week over a period of three weeks, Muller and Blott would go to two different sites to monitor for fish, often working from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. "We would pick an area to start (at) and move up stream as we sampled so as to make the muddy water we stirred up move away from us," Muller said. "About every 10 feet we would sample. Sometimes the seine — a 12-foot-long, 4foot-high net with 6-foot poles on its end — would be dragged through the water and to the shore scooping up the fish. Sometimes it would be held in a position and people would run down the river toward it. If we were after minnows, we would use a fast run. If we are after daters, a group of fishes that live on the bottom, then we moved slowly, shuffling our feet side to side." "We sampled all the different habitats and collected every fish we could," Blott said. "After taking measurements and pictures, we would put the fish right back into the river unharmed. When we switched sites during the day, we tried to work at sites located in the same stream so as not to transfer any micro-organisms that may be present in one stream but not in the next." Muller said the number of fish samples collected at each site ranged from 24 to over 400, and OAKLAND LAKEFRONT

identifying and cataloging the fish often took more time than catching the fish. Among the fish species found during the survey was the redside dace, a currently endangered species in the state of Michigan that has previously been found in the Rouge River watershed — but not in recent years. "We were very happy to find them, and we were hoping we would," Petrella said. "They have not been found in recent surveys. The last time the redside dace was found was by the Department of Natural Resources back in 2005." "We didn't think we would find them," said Blott, who will graduate with her degree in environmental sciences upon completion of the internship. "It gave us a bit of hope that the Rouge was in better shape than we thought it was. Finding the redside dace was the highlight of the surveys." Redside dace are small minnows — they grow up to a maximum of 4.7 inches long — and have a distinct white-yellow band extending from the snout to the tail that separates the dark back of the fish from a distinct red band on the lower side of the fish. They typically spawn at the end of May, and when they do, the males become even more vibrant in color. "When males are ready to breed, they tend to change color," Petrella said. "The male has this gorgeous red stripe which is seen at this time of year when they are breeding. The first male we caught was in breeding condition. I was fortunate to be at the site at the time. He was gorgeous." The redside dace lives in small streams with adequate overhanging vegetation for shading of the stream, and with abundant, coarse, woody structure. They need cool, clear water. The species is found in several disparate populations in southeast Michigan, such as the Rouge River drainage in Washtenaw and Oakland counties and the Huron River drainage in Washtenaw County. Petrella said the redside dace was found at four of the 22 river sites sampled, including at Minnow Pond and Seeley Creek in Farmington Hills. "The redside dace is a very sensitive minnow," Petrella said. "It's a good indication when you find it at a site. It's a sign that the site is in good shape." "The redside dace were fantastic," Muller said. "Being endangered in Michigan, we had to take the photographs streamside as we had to put them back into the creek. The DNR has not sampled in about a decade, so finding them still here is important. www.oaklandlakefront.com

Redside dace are an indicator of good water as they need clean, clear water with a high oxygen content to survive." Other fish, including catfish, shiners and a fish that is often confused with the redside dace — the northern redbelly dace, which has a smaller mouth, blunter head, and red coloration laterally that may continue to the belly — were also found during the survey. The northern redbelly dace are typically 2-incheslong with two back stripes and a red belly when breeding, according to Muller. "On one site on Johnson Creek, we sampled over 80 northern redbelly dace," Muller said. "They are another indicator of good water quality. I have sampled them several times, but always only three or four at a time, so 80 at once was a surprise. I believe they were spawning, and we just hit the time perfectly." They also found the northern hog sucker, which Petrella said was a "surprise" because it's a "pretty sensitive fish." Also seen for the first time was the western banded killifish in Minnow Pond Creek. "The killifish was not previously listed as living in the Rouge," Blott said. Next comes the time for compiling all the data and drawing conclusions from the survey. "Now that sampling is basically finished, we will be spending our time on writing up a report of our findings — not nearly as much fun as jumping in the water," Muller said. Blott added. "Hopefully, we will have a greater understanding of the condition the Rouge is in and where the fish are living. Hopefully our efforts will further encourage to keep on working on cleaning up the river. Maybe we will be able to bring people's attention to the little fish in the watershed that people just don't know about. Many people don't know about all the little colorful minnows." "I thought the whole project was a wonderful thing for the Rouge River," Petrella said. "We were able to collect data at a minimal expense, provide a learning experience for the interns, and involve our volunteers with the surveys. It was a great project. We are very appreciative of the interns' hard work, and we're hoping Professor Jerry Smith at the University of Michigan will take a look at our data. We hope the data will be able to tell us a lot of information about the stream." ❏ OAKLAND LAKEFRONT

waterway levels

Following are the waterway level readings for lakes and rivers across Oakland County, as compiled by personnel in Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner John P. McCulloch’s office. Legal levels are denoted by elevation in feet from sea level. Current (one month prior to press time) levels are denoted both in elevation from sea level and as plus or minus the legal level in hundredths feet. Prior year elevation from sea level is provided as a comparison. River depths are measured from the river bottom, at the point of measurement.
