Dear West Oakland Woman, ello, and welcome to our first issue focusing on news and resources for you — a woman living in west Oakland County. Inside, you will find terrific articles on Lynn Torossian, president of DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township; the hospital's Sinai Center for Women; how to get a good night's sleep; where to shop locally for clothing, accessories and shoes; a new retreat center to pamper post breast-cancer women; day vs. medi-spas; and other wonderful offerings. By tendency, women have a role as caretakers of the softer side of life — others' well being, children, families and friends, and those in need. No matter how "modern" we are, and how much we may also have careers and worldly dreams, the role of taking care of other sentient beings is somehow woven into our genetic makeup. We can't turn it off. Although this is a tremendously exciting time to be on the planet, with change in the air and unfolding dramatically each day within us and around us, it's also a challenging time, and ever more important to be sure that we ourselves are taken care of, too. Our internal intuitive guidance systems, those small signals and nudges, are more important now than ever before. Living from the heart is an ever increasing essential ingredient for daily life. The Oakland Communications team (a wonderful group of people, and almost all women) and I hope there is time in your day with a cup of tea or coffee to peruse what is here and receive something back for yourself — new ideas, new local resources, and new things to explore. Enjoy!

Tranquility awaits in west Oakland
veryone needs a moment of sheer indulgence, of basking in the velvety luxury of being pampered through a spa experience and leaving the world behind while your face and body are rejuvenated and destressed. Spas are a haven, a retreat from a frenzied world where people can leave their cares at the doorstep and enter into a portal of tranquility, even if it's just for an hour. There's no short supply of spas and medi-spas in the west Oakland area. With so many spas popping up all over, residents can be choosy consumers in a market rife with competition. There seems to be a choice for every customer. Day spas visits offer a flexible way to infuse luxury treatment into a person's everyday life. Therapeutic massages, beautifying facials and invigorating body wraps are just some of the popular spa treatments to relax in for an hour or the entire day. Eco spas are usually set in a tranquil and natural environment, promote green practices, and offer a collective of holistic or eco-friendly products. Medi-spas offer a two-fold approach to relaxation and therapeutic treatments. Not only do they specialize in soothing skin treatments, but they also offer diagnostic testing and cosmetic procedures administered by a staff of medical professionals. Mobile spas bring trained therapists to a home or office for those on a hectic schedule, and provide services such as facials, massages, manicures, and pedicures. The medi-spa is a growing trend in the industry that integrates clinical-grade aesthetic enhancement and spa treatments. They provide services with medical menu items such as Botox injections or fillers like Restylane or Perlane, pain management, and spider vein surgery. In tandem, they treat facial conditions like brown spots, redness, and broken capillaries that can't be treated as effectively by an esthetician. Other non-invasive services may include laser treatments, laser hair removal, IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments, microdermabrasion, photo facials, aggressive chemical peels, and skin tightening. In the United States, the number of people opting for some form of cosmetic procedure is enormous. According to medicalspamd.com, in 2009, there were approximately 10 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. Surgical procedures accounted for 15 percent of the total, with nonsurgical procedures making up the other 85 percent. Overall, Americans spent almost $10.5 billion on cosmetic procedures last year. According to the International Spa Association, the number of medical spas continues to grow at the fastest rate. Since July 2007, the number of medical spas
has grown by 85 percent, further proof that this spa type is a notable part of the industry. That said, day spas continue to dominate the industry at 79 percent of total spas. The following is a non-comprehensive list of some of the day and medi-spas in the west Oakland and surrounding areas: • Pure Salon and Day Spa, 39800 W. 14 Mile Road, Walled Lake, 248-624-4700. • De Leonardo Salon & Spa, 1123 E. ynn Torossian's professors at Eastern Michigan University had different plans for her. While studying to be a certified professional accountant in Ypsilanti, some elbow-patched academics suggested she stay the course and aim for a career as a chief financial officer. But she had a case of pruritus — more commonly known as an itch — for pursuing her life's passion in the medical field. That's because Torossian, the president of DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township, grew up in a household in which her "entire family was involved in the health care industry." "Pretty much my whole life, I knew I was going to do something in health care," said the mother of two. So Torossian — who cut her teeth in the financial sector at what was then known as Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) before going to work for Sinai Hospital of Detroit — takes her job seriously. Torossian, who began with Huron Valley-Sinai in 2006 as chief operating officer and vice president of operations before taking over the reins as president in 2008, also takes the concept of keeping things local seriously. She spent a number of years schlepping over 30 miles one-way from Milford, where she has lived since 1988, to Detroit. Living in west Oakland County for more than 20 years, she often found herself driving to Huron Valley-Sinai while still working in the Motor City and thinking "how great it would be to work there." "My dream job was to end up at this hospital and this organization because I think that, to be a really good hospital president, you really need to be part of the community that your hospital is a part of so that you know and understand what the community is about and what types of things are needed," she said. So now, after so many years of being unable to realistically and feasibly become involved in the community where she worked, she's making up for lost time. Last month, Torossian was honored by the Burnstein Community Health Clinic with its 2011 Esteemed Women in Michigan Award, which put her among such venerable company as Carolyn Clifford, Lila Lazarus, Doris Biscoe, Danialle Karmanos, and Nancy Schlichting. As a board member for the Huron Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce (although she recently delegated her board seat to Karen Fordham, vice president and chief operating officer for Huron Valley-Sinai), Torossian knows all about service to west Oakland County. But even beyond that, Torossian also devotes her time to the board of Huron Valley State Bank, as well
as the Rose Hill Center Board of Directors, which oversees the Holly long-term psychiatric facility. Particularly with Rose Hill, her family's involvement in the health system is on full display. Her father, a retired psychiatrist, prompted what she called "a passion" for mental health care patients and the issues facing them. And in the past five years she has worked at the lakes area's largest employer, there have been remarkable changes at what employees affectionately say began as "the little hospital behind the apple orchard," referring to Long's Family Farm in Commerce Township, according to Torossian. "It's just so much more now" than it was 25 years ago when the hospital first opened, she said. Those changes include going through the process — which Torossian described as "a little bit cumbersome" — to obtain a Certificate of Need for the hospital's primary angioplasty program, something that nixes what was once a need to send heart attack patients for treatment to hospitals in Pontiac and Royal Oak, or even as far away as Ann Arbor. "That was one that really made a huge difference for the community," Torossian said. But the Milford resident of more than two decades is much more than just career and community service and philanthropy. Currently, she's the only female president of a hospital within the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), an organization she calls "pretty diverse, ethnically, racially, and gender-wise." While she doesn't feel she had "a harder battle to fight" like many other women may, particularly in rising up the corporate ladder and furthering their careers, she is "extremely proud" of what she's been able to accomplish. "I think that I'm especially proud of (becoming president) because I feel like I've gotten here through very honest hard work and by really holding true to who I am and what my values are," she said. "I don't think I'm unique in that." And she also is proud that she is a good role model for her 17-year-old daughter, who is a senior in high school and about to embark on her college career, as well as her daughter's friends. It's also that commitment to family that lead her to say that participation in her children's school activities was one of the things she does most outside of her career and volunteer work. Not only that, but she and her husband are frequenters of local restaurants, and she is active in yoga and utilizing west Oakland's numerous bike trails. And what if she needs to relax? She and her family go to their cabin Up North — although it's not where you think it may be. Their "Up North" is just seven miles from their house in Milford Township, situated on the waters of Duck Lake in Highland Township. Talk about keeping it local.✿ OCTOBER 2011 | WEST OAKLAND WOMEN 7

reast cancer doesn't define a woman — it merely impedes her journey. Fortunately there is a house of hope where a woman's feelings are validated without needing to justify them, and she walks away both encouraged and empowered. This unique place, Grass Lake Sanctuary (GLS) in Manchester, Mich., provides the impetus for re-establishing life-balancing connections with nature and relationships through emotional exploration, healthy food, and therapeutic rejuvenation. "These women have been through enough, so it's a time for them to receive," said Retreat Director Christine Morgan. "It affords them the movement, exercise, rest and personal time for reflection bolstered by good food to give the body what it needs to balance so the heart can open more." GLS is a nonprofit retreat situated on 145 acres of pristine meadows, groomed trails and natural watersheds. It's a safe haven where serenity, inspiration and healing begins. The retreats are designed for women diagnosed with breast cancer who have completed active treatment and are ready to take the next steps toward wellness. Whether that was one year or 10 years ago, all women are welcome. Sue Ahrenhold has been a breast cancer survivor for about 3.5 years now. She attended a GLS retreat in July 2011 and said she would give the program five stars. "It's built around being allowed to be cared for in a lovely setting — it's a restful and nurturing place," she said. "The environment allows you to get in touch with your physical self again." Many times after the doctor visits are completed, the battle scars are healed and the hair has grown back, some may ask themselves the following question: "What's next?" Staff members at GLS take it upon themselves to help each woman discover the next chapter of wellness in her life. "We help them focus on wellness — how they move on and connect to life again," Morgan said. "In treatment, their attention is not available yet because they're busy treating their cancer." Ahrenhold compared cancer treatment to battling a war, unsure of victory. "You have to suck it up, show up, and deal with lots of people and pain — but you go through it anyway. It's normal to fall apart and it takes longer to redefine yourself in that space," she said. She added that all the while you must contend with your body changing and taking medications that make you uncomfortable. "It's a tough road. The person you are at

the end is different from the woman you were at the beginning," she said. GLS was officially founded in July 2007 by a grassroots group of volunteers who wished to pool their resources and make a unique retreat sanctuary available to the community at large. During the last few years, efforts have been spent preparing and restoring the sanctuary's land while building partnerships within the community that provide funding through grants and donations, making programs possible for people in need. With future funding, women who are underinsured, underserved or have low income and live in Washtenaw, Jackson, Ingham, Livingston, Eaton, Clinton, or Shiawassee counties may be eligible for full scholarships through a grant from the Mid-Michigan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure®! Although Oakland County residents are not necessarily mentioned in the grant per se, GLS looks at each applicant on a case-by-case basis. Check back to the GLS website for 2012 funding. "We assess on an individual basis and work with women for other subsidies and GLS scholarships," Morgan said. "The idea is (that) if a woman can benefit we want her to go and will come up with creative ways to make that happen." Each restorative three-day event focuses on life-balancing experiences via an integrative holistic approach tailored to the needs of participants. Women become part of heart-to-heart discussions during the Connecting Women's Circles and Fire Circle sessions; are privy to peaceful and simple accommodations; learn nutritional recipes; participate in nature and art activities; enjoy healing body movement and de-stress free time to hike, contemplate and rest; and relaxing therapeutic massage. "We pamper them until they giggle," Morgan said. "One of our trademarks is a program called the 'foot fairies.' When we tuck them into bed, quiet foot fairies massage their feet as they sleep." ccording to a study conducted by the University of Michigan and based on pre- and post-participation questionnaires, women find the retreats beneficial in two regards. "No. 1, the ladies loved connecting with one another; and secondly, they found it beneficial to connect with staff — so it's really about relationships," Morgan said. "It's the power of the group that says it's OK to receive and then they can relax." For example, one participant told Morgan with tears welling in her eyes, "Never in my life have I felt so taken care of." As women, it's difficult to receive care when you're so used to tending to others, but at GLS it's all about nurturing the participant. "The program is built around receiving and — being women — most of us are not used to that. Even when we away on vacation with our families, we're still tending to other people. The nurturing at GLS is startling at first, but once you get used to it, you really appreciate the refuge," she said. Participants arrive 3 p.m. Friday and leave Sunday afternoon. Meals are prepared with organic and natural ingredients, many of which are grown in the sanctuary's organic garden that produces fresh vegetables, fruit, and herbs. Apart from receiving recipes and sumptuous food, they are given tips for creating balanced meals at home. Each day, women are introduced to inspirational movement classes such as Nia, Yoga, or Gyrotonics by certified teachers. Guided meditation, gentle ➜10

9 massage and healing energy touch are also woven throughout the weekend. After the retreat experience, the participants are invited to return to reunions with other participants to continue receiving the support needed to transition back into everyday life. GLS holds a series of retreats every summer. This year they were able to pull off five. In the off-season, an army of volunteers begins fund-raising for the next round. Anyone who wants to donate time or dollars to support women and family wellness can contact GLS at 734-726-0290. The majority of staff volunteers their services — few are compensated. Clark came to a point where he and his family were unable to continue caring for the land and yearned for an organization to carry on his legacy. He put out a call for local stewards to take over and transform the nature preserve into a sanctuary that served the community. GLS stepped in to use the land for a greater good and carry out the sanctuary's mission and vision. Right now GLS is working on a website blogging capability so the alumni can keep in touch with each other after attending. The next GLS initiative is to run pilot programs, expand the volunteer and donor bases, and launch retreats to the general public. Recently GLS ran pilot programming for six families

f the copious amounts of pink everywhere are any indication, the month of breast cancer awareness has arrived. The pink serves as a reminder to women to remain conscious of their own breast health. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recommends that women over the age of 40 go in for a mammogram annually. And like that semi-annual trip to the dentist, getting a mammogram may just seem like another necessary chore to add to an already too long to do list. However, studies have proven that early detection of breast cancer with screening mammography saves lives because it allows treatment to be started earlier in the course of the disease and possibly even before the cancer has had a chance to spread. The recommended age is 40 as studies in woman under 40 have so far not shown a benefit from regular screening mammography, according to the NCI. Therefore, it's in the best interest of a woman in her 40s to get an annual mammogram. And while many may consider this a necessary chore, there's a way to make the experience more palatable, if not exactly pleasant. Time is a valuable commodity in this day and age. Women needing to go in for a screening don't want to wait hours in a hospital waiting room to have a simple test done — which is one reason why the Sinai Center for Women at the DMC Huron ValleySinai Hospital Campus in Commerce Township is a great solution for women. "We found that patients coming in for services want to come in and they want to come out and they want to do so quickly and easily and have it convenient for them," said Karen Thompson, the center's director of diagnostic imaging. "With the separate center, it's easy in and easy out. Women can have the procedures done relatively quickly." The center's similarity to an outpatient facility also adds another level of comfort for women. With a homey and inviting atmosphere, the center achieves warmth as opposed to the sometimes cold environment of a hospital radiology department. Additionally, healthy women simply going in for a screening at the center have the added benefit of knowing that they don't have to mingle with the general sickly population of a hospital to get the procedure done. "It's mainly healthy women who come in to a get a screening done," said Karen Fordham, bice president and chief operating officer for DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital. "To merge them into the general sick population or into the perception of a sick population might make a woman feel more uncomfortable than just going to a center (that specializes in these screenings)."
As part of its diagnostic services, the Sinai Center for Women offers digital mammography as opposed to conventional mammography. Both forms use X-rays to produce images of the breast. The only difference between the two techniques is how the images are stored. In conventional mammography, the image is stored directly on film, whereas in digital mammography, an electronic image is stored as a computer file. This offers several advantages, such as the ability to enhance, magnify, or more easily manipulate the image for further evaluation. "In the previous world, we would take pictures on film, and then put the film on a light board to see the patient's image," Fordham said. "Now, (with digital mammography), we use technology to enhance the images of the original image. Not only does it take clearer pictures, but the radiographer is able to see more clearly the image on the 5 mega pixel monitors that enhance the images for them." "With a film image, you get what you get," Thompson said. "With digital mammography you have the opportunity to magnify the image just as you would if you're looking at the picture on a computer instead of a 1-D image in front of you." The center also performs stereotactic breast biopsy, a minimally-invasive procedure that falls into the category of "Band-aid Biopsy" or "Band-aid Surgery," according to Thompson. "It's a targeted biopsy," she said. "(For example), the patient has a lesion in the breast that we are able to view on a radiographic image, and we do targeted imaging measuring the X and Y planes and are able to locate the lesion or calcification. And then we actually do a targeted biopsy of that area. We will image the tissue to make sure that if there are calcifications they are seen before it goes to pathology." Digital m Microcalcifications, or tiny deposits of calcium, enhan can sometimes indicate the presence of breast cancer, according to the NCI. While screening mammograms are often used to detect tumors that can't yet be felt, mammograms — also called diagnostic mammograms — can be used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other sign or symptom of the disease has been found. And if a woman has found a lump in her breast, the staff at the Sinai Center for Women doesn't waste any time.

"One thing that I think is a benefit that (DMC Huron Valley-Sinai) provides is that when women are calling in for their mammography and they say they have found a lump, we not only automatically schedule a diagnostic mammogram but also a breast ultrasound," Fordham said. "It's protocol. We're not calling the patient back on the second day to do a breast ultrasound and then possibly a stereotactic biopsy if needed. Breast ultrasounds are according to DMC Huron Valley-Sinai staff. performed to double check for the mass and to determine whether the mass is cystic or solid. The ultrasound also helps to determine the mass' margins, and provides information on the anatomy surrounding the suspicious area, according to Thompson. “Often times, we will consult with the ordering physician to provide biopsy services that same day, provided we have the referring physician's permission and the patient's approval," she said. The referring physician's permission is crucial as all patients at the center have to be referred by their doctor. "We need to make sure there is somebody responsible for the patient's care," Thompson said. The referring physician's blessing is also important in enabling the center to provide its "personalized healthcare experience" with the aid of a breast cancer navigator. "If any patient has to be called back for any reason for a biopsy, the navigator meets with them individually to go over the entire process," Thompson said. "She gives them information on the biopsy: what to expect, and what that person will experience. She is in the mammography offers the ability to room with the physician while the biopsy is being ance images for further evaluation. performed and does a follow up call the next day. The navigator gets the results, contacts the physicians, faxes the result to the doctor's office, and makes sure they get them." If the biopsy is negative, then everybody is happy. But it's when the biopsy is positive where the center's "personal touch has been enhanced over the past year," according to Fordham. With a positive biopsy, the navigator becomes a liaison and helps the patient schedule the necessary

appointments, with the primary care physician's approval. The navigator is available to answer questions and provide a builtin support system right from the initial diagnosis. "There's somebody for them to go to if they have a positive test result," Fordham said. "I think that's key especially when it's the C word. When the C word comes out, nobody really knows what to do. We provide this one person that can actually help guide them to the right doctors, to the right appointments, to help them understand what's next in the process." "It's all with the ordering physician's blessing, of course," Thompson said. "They don't do anything outside that boundary. The navigator is a person the patient can contact for any portion of their care." Since the center was built in 2006 with funds from the Sinai Guild and other donors, the Sinai Center for Women has performed approximately 12,000 procedures annually — with 10,000 of those being mammograms. However, the center doesn't just specialize in breast health; it also offers services for bone density testing and venous ablation on legs. According to Fordham, the vein therapy is "more cosmetic than medical." Meanwhile, the bone density testing is to determine whether the patient's bones are in danger of becoming osteoporotic or are developing osteopenia — a weakening of bones, according to Thompson. "The World Health Organization did a study that took the averages based on age, sex, and demographics to create a range of normal bone density. Those with bones that have become osteoporotic or developed osteopenia we want to watch carefully for fractures," she explained. Bone density testing is a painless procedure that uses pin point radiation — an amount smaller than those received during dentist X-rays. Typically, those having their bone density tested are women who have a depletion of estrogen, are estrogen dependent, are in longterm steroid therapy, have cancer or an autoimmune disease, or who have renal issues. "Basically, it's for patients that have anything that would create a chemistry that depletes calcium in the bone," Thompson said. Certain criteria needs to be met before patients are referred to have their bone density tested. This criteria normally depends on the patient's history. "If you're a young, healthy, 40-year-old female, this procedure is not something that would be recommended. However, once a patient meets the criteria, generally they come in once a year for testing depending on what the physician suggests," Thompson said. The Sinai Center for Women is fully accredited, which includes accreditation by the American College of Radiology. It's open Monday through Friday with evening hours twice throughout the week. poil yourself with high-end beauty products and “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” treatment without paying lavish prices, at a one-stop beauty supply and hair salon that recently opened its doors in West Bloomfield Township. Complete Beauty Supply and Salon relocated three weeks ago from its old location near Hiller's in Commerce Township to the newly constructed retail center located adjacent to the Windmill Market at 7275 Cooley Lake Road. Proprietor Fay Konja has spared no expense in creating an elegant setting that's both comfortable and functional. Tasteful decor in neutral and coral tones are complemented by cherry wood salon stations and ecru-patterned ceramic tile. Etched crown moldings add sophistication while the large windows invite the light in for a cheery and spacious feel. The project has been a labor of love for Konja, who after working for years in the retail sector, wanted to embark on a new adventure.

Currently Konja employs three hair stylists, one nail technician, and an MAC makeup artist. Konja's sunny disposition is underscored by her commitment to customer service. "My main goal is to provide quality service at an affordable price," she said. "We cater to our customers. If I don't have it, I will get it for you; if you find it cheaper somewhere else, I'll match that price." Apart from competitive hair and nail services, a slew of facial services are offered, including masks, collagen and deep cleansing treatments. Some unique services range from eyelash and eyebrow tinting, lip and eyebrow waxing, as well as ear wax candle instruction. "We teach you how to use these," Konja said. "They clear your sinuses and help reduce headaches." One niche Konja caters to are those undergoing cancer treatment, hair loss, or diagnosed with

She also orders matching eyebrows especially for these customers. "Cancer survivors come in even before chemotherapy and try on wigs to prepare," Konja said. To afford them the privacy they deserve, a separate drawing room has been reserved for these customers. The enclosed room, decorated in blooming spring colors, resonates with hope and renewal. "The room is not intended to make them feel different, but comfortable," Konja said. ne 85-year-old cancer survivor who purchased a wig from Konja later bought another two. Wigs cost around $99 for long or short versions, compared to $200 or $300.
Shampoos, conditioners, and brushes to maintain the wigs are also for sale. Top-shelf beauty products line the shop's walls, some tailored specifically to lakes area residents, such as the Malibu 2000 treatment for those customers who are disposed to the stringent after-effects of well water. Konja explained that, in a typical beauty supply store, the mark-up can be up to 100 percent, whereas her's range between 10 and 20 percent.

Keep shopping local There’s a bounty of area boutiques for women of all ages and tastes By Angela Niemi staff writer
hile shopping at the mall may be a one-stop, shopuntil-you-drop opportunity, sometimes there just isn't time to make the trek out to the mall. That's when it's nice to have a variety of local boutiques that can meet your fashion needs — especially if it's a last-minute grab, such as that one accessory that pulls together an entire outfit. Local boutiques can also be a great source of unique gifts for others, or even yourself. And throughout the lakes area, there are shops that cater to women of all ages and tastes. From trendy to conservative, from casual to dressy, west Oakland women can find apparel, shoes, and accessories for any event right in their own communities. This year in America, more than 211,00 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,400 will die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year. If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age and older have never had a mammogram. The National Cancer Institute and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend that women in their forties and older have mammograms every one to two years. A complete early detection plan also includes regular clinical breast examinations by a trained medical professional. Monthly breast self-exams are suggested in addition.

American Cancer Society Guidelines For The Early Detection of Breast Cancer:
Mammogram: Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year, and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. Clinical breast exam (CBE): Women in their 20’s and 30’s should have a clinical breast examination as part of a regular health exam by a health expert preferably every 3 years. After age 40, women should have a breast exam by a health professional every year. Breast self-examination (BSE): Women should report any change in their breast to their doctor right away. BSE is for women (starting in their 20’s) to find changes in their breasts. Ask your health professional to show you the proper way to examine your breast.
