Thailand Date : 26th of October 2014 Time : 8.30 am. – 2.00 pm. Place : Pongnoi village , Chiang Mai

The first activity was started when local children from around Pongoi village gathered at the temple. We taught them the necessary knowledge about the Rabies disease, for example, general information about rabies, directions how to protecting themselves from an attack from a companion animal or stray dogs and cats, and the protocol to protect themselves from rabies after the attacked. We also had fun together by playing games, coloring pictures and making some sandwiches! After finishing the first activity, we separated into two groups and walked around the village! Two Veterinarians from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Chiang Mai University supervised us in each group. We vaccinated and dewormed their pets, and we also gave villagers the knowledge of rabies. There were 76 doses of rabies vaccines used in this activity, 53 doses for dogs and 23 doses for cats.

The Netherlands Utrecht, 24th September, 2014 We raised money for Werelddierenwerk (translated it’s WorldAnimalJobs). WorldAnimalJobs Foundation is a sister organisation of People for Animals in India. This year we organized the event together with Hygieia, a One-health (medical-veterinary) students organization in Utrecht. Run4Rabies is a running competition (with or without dog) to raise money for a rabies-linked project in a developing country. Runners can run (or walk) 5 or 10 kilometers from the veterinary faculty . This year, 96 runners registered. We also raise money by selling drinks and snacks and we hold a lottery. All the money from the registration, food, and drinks is totally going to the project. We invited a band. A lot of runners stayed to listen after the competition. A few veterinarians gave free health checks for dogs of participants, to underline the interest of animal health and as a service for the runners with dogs. In total we raised ₏1050 for WorldAnimalJobs!

Nigeria – zoonosis prevention treatment

The main source of rabies transmission in Nigerian communities were from mongrel dogs owners in rural areas. These people have little or no education about rabies, need for vaccination of their dogs or a standard human health care system equipped to handle cases of rabid dog bites yet they had quite a number of dogs they live with and engage in hunting- a high risk for these dogs to encounter a wild reservoir host! The event was tagged “PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVE” – Free anti-rabies vaccination and other zoonosis prevention treatment and was anchored and registered to be hosted by the team leader Dr Oyebanji Victor O. By and large, the event was a success and the reports were covered by the National Television Authority (NTA) Uyo branch and released on the news bulletin of the TV station.

Pet fair in the target community of Barangay San Isidro: educating the community about rabies, its effects, management and prevention

Group discussions and a question and answer portion followed, focusing on the virus’ mode of transmission and its effects once it infects a host.

Then, using an “entertain and educate” approach, we worked with the children through games, specifically pabitin – a local Filipino game where kids would grab prizes hanging from a bamboo frame that randomly lowers.

Philippines - Bakuna at Dul창 Para sa Rabis Theatrical information and education campaign presented to out of school youth

The play focuses on how they can get the disease and what should happen if they get bitten. We used scenarios : 1) giving pets as presents to people who eventually would end up mistreating the pet later on, 2) dumping garbage on the streets which would provide food for the stray animals, and 3) pet owners who would let their animals roam, pleading mercifully for their pets to be released from impounding and eventually letting them out again.

Mission To teach respect for wildlife and that the best thing we can do for both them and ourselves is to admire from a distance versus direct contact

Rabies Discovery Trail Children and their families visiting the zoo were given a map with spots of stations where they could get a stamp. 1. Both wild and domestic animals are able to get rabies. We introduced children to the various canid species of the world and talked about preventing rabies in pets. 2. Highlighted the vital role bats play in our ecosystem, but also emphasized that bats do serve as a rabies vector in the United States and are the most common vector in New York. 3. Any mammal can be susceptible to rabies though some are more likely to contract the disease than others. A key message delivered was that if there is any potential for rabies exposure, children should let their parents or a guardian know and seek medical attention.

Lecture talking about rabies and its zoonotic potential Veterinary and MPH students travelled to India over the summer and they presented their firsthand experience with rabies cases

Rabies still exists in the United States, especially in skunk and bat populations. The rabies luncheon was attended by veterinary students, and also graduate students and professors of the college. It served as an important reminder that veterinarians are at the forefront of public health. Often times, veterinarians are the first to see clients and their animals who have had potential contact with rabies. It is the veterinarian’s responsibility to disseminate information and appropriately lead the client to the proper resources. The event was also a stark reminder that rabies is a serious problem in certain foreign nations, like India, where rabies is endemic.

Brazil “The Dog Days are Over” São José do Rio Preto, SP 13th September, 2014

The event took place on a Saturday morning in a dog’s adoption fair organized by the NGO Fauna Protetora. We approached people asking if they had a pet, and explained the importance of taking care of their animal. We informed them that the rabies vaccine is available for free at the Center of Zoonosis Control. As medical students, we reminded them of how important it is to control animal diseases in order to maintain our health. We reached about 100 families.

We decided to educate young students because they can easily teach their parents and mostly because they are the parents of tomorrow and the dog owners of tomorrow. We went door to door; made video and audio spots over local television and radio stations in French, English, and local dialects; talked to primary, secondary, Faculty of veterinary medicine, and training center of nurses and laboratory technicians; and put up posters and distributed fliers. Slovakia “Bats and lyssaviruses” Košice, 11.11.14 The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy

We are a rabies-free country. We have 28 species of bats. A lot of people know that it is very important to vaccinate dogs and foxes but only a few people know about bats. We wanted to increase their awareness of rabies prevention in bats and what to do when they find bats in their house. We had posters at school with some interesting information about rabies and bats. We had tea and some biscuits. About 30 people attended.

Austria Vienna Sept 28th – October 23rd Even though Austria is a "rabies free" country it is still important to vaccinate cats, dogs, veterinary students, and veterinarians against rabies to prevent this disease from spreading again. There are still a lot of rabies cases in our wildlife animals. • Photo competition with a book prize • 300 students attended the “Werewolves, Rabies, and Vampires” lecture • Free Rabies Vaccination Event
