TABLE OF CONTENTS IVSA Standing Committee on One Health 2013/2014
Introduction
Hi all IVSians throughout the world, My name is Theofanis Liatis, I am a on the final year of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and former Vice-President of IVSA Thessaloniki. The academic year 2013/2014 I was the first Chairman of IVSA Standing Committee on One Health (SCOH), as well as member of IVSA Executive Committee with debts Veterinary Public Health Director. SCOH was founded in the 62th IVSA Congress in the Netherlands in August 2014. As a newborn committee the construction of the basic trunk of the committee as well as the function and the project designing of the committee was a difficult job. However, with great efforts, willingness, dreams, imagination, trust and collaboration, we created a 10thmembered committee from the four continents and we started a great chain of projects. After designing the first necessary elements of a right committee such as emails, social media pages (facebook, linkedin), online library (Issuu), intercommunication (facebook group, emailing) etc., we started a number of projects so by ourselves, as also in collaboration with IVSA ExCo and other public health related associations (Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF), Stop TB Partnership). Finally, I would like to express that even though I had a difficult program as I was on my final year and I had also an accident with my health, which were some obstacles for being present in a lot of ExCo meetings or Symposia/Congresses, the experience of this position was exquisite! I LOVED THE….communication with people I didn’t know before/…when I saw the poster of my design for a campaign to be printed on a great banner in different countries far away from Greece/…the rapid flourishing of One Health in veterinary schools worldwide/…the willingness of local chapter to participate in every project/…the communication with other sciences’ students/…the new friends that I made/…the voluntary work for making better the vet students’ society. I would like to thank personally IVSA members as I was elected without being present in the Netherlands Congress last summer, as well as IVSA President Pim Polak, who trusted and supported me in a great level even if he didn’t know me so much. At last, I would like to thank all IVSA board, but especially IVSA ExCo which I shared a lot of time, problems, questions and laughing this year! It was a great life experience! Respectfully, Theofanis K. Liatis Veterinary Public Health Director 2013/2014, IVSA ExCo Chairman 2013/2014, IVSA Standing Committee on One Health (SCOH) publichealth@ivsa.org www.facebook.com/thescoh

Hi! My name is Ines Ben Jebara. I am from Tunisia. I find that the concept of One Health should gain more recognition by vet students, that’s why I was very excited when the Standing Committee of one Health was created during Utrecht Congress in 2013. One year after, it’s nice to look back at what we have done. Looking on our Facebook page, leaflets, and videos makes me proud to say that almost of our goals have been achieved thanks to the effort of our chairman, core members and LoVPHOs. However, a continuous effort by IVSA members for next year is still needed to make this committee distinguished for a longer time. I want to share with you my rich experience with SCOH this year. I didn’t hesitate to join this amazing committee as a core member to promote the role of veterinary doctors to save animals but also human’s lives. My main task was to organize “the fight against Tuberculosis Campaign”. I was glad to see many chapters raising awareness about TB in different continents thanks to an initiative started by this committee on 24 March 2014: World Tuberculosis Day. I believe that collaboration can create miracles. I really appreciate to work hand in hand with students from other medical related field to the same goal: ONE HEALTH. I was happy to contribute to this project and I wish that more IVSA members want to be a part of it next year. So, Are you passionate by one health concept? Are you a creative person, full of energy? Do you like team work? Do you want to work with partners? So, what are you still waiting for? Join IVSA SCOH 2014-2015. If you have a good leadership skills and more spare time to dedicate it to his noble mission. The position of chairman of SCOH is for you!
My name is Katerina Ntemka. I come from Greece and I represent IVSA Thessaloniki! I feel so glad for being a part of SCOH this year! As a team, we had the opportunity to combine different ideas and cultures, in order to do great projects: street actions, school visits, animal vaccinations, lectures, workshops, our journal. In this way, we tried to awake people all over the world and emphasize the idea of “One Health”. It was a great experience, with great collaborators (both SCOH members and external partners)!!

Warm greetings to everyone! I’m Dr. Sirjan Bastola from Nepal. I am Exchange Officer at IVSA Nepal. It was really a wonderful feeling to get selected for Core Member of first Standing Committee on One Health(SCOH) of Central IVSA from newly established IVSA chapter at Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science(IAAS),Nepal. Though it was a beginning year for our chapter, I always took it as an opportunity to learn and serve being IVSA Nepal Exchange Officer,Core member of Standing Committee on One Health(SCOH) and Member Editor of Veterinary Public Health Journal(VPHJ). I always feel the team was perfectly led and coordinated by SCOH Chairman Theofanis Liatis.I really appreciate his dynamic leadership and efforts of all of SCOH members to enhance the global understanding on concepts of One Health and address the most challenging Viral and Bacterial Zoonoses. Despite the long distance between us and busy schedules of all of us,it is appreciable to mention that we always give our best to organize programs and events at our place. The year 2013-14 went with a good networking among us and good division of work. Being a member of SCOH,it enabled me to accept the leadership to organize Free Rabies Vaccination Camps(World Rabies Day) and Tuberculosis Awareness Program(World Tuberculosis Day). Thus, our chapter was able to allure the concern of Veterinary Students from Zoonotic Diseases and One Health Concept on one hand , and create awareness in our community on the other.Similarly, other projects like “Neutering Dogs and Cats for Rabies Control” and “Birldflu and Biosecurity Awareness” would be some of the additional One Health projects that our chapter would organize in the coming year. It equally gave me an immense pleasure to be a Member Editor of Veterinary Public Health Journal(VPHJ) being issued by SCOH.It provided a good platform for the young Scientific writers to come up with their innovative writings. With the successful publication of two issues of VPHJ,SCOH team again has proved itself to be an active body of IVSA and equally an inspiring model for IVSAians and Veterinary students all round the world. Coming to the end of the tenure, I am feeling to have earned a lot of skills on leadership, program implementation and management, international relationship and communication, and publication. It was worth use of time to learn such skills when we have some time from our busy academic schedules. So,I request all the young enthusiastic Vets to come to this platform to develop their professionalism and explore the useful opportunities. My best wishes are also with the new team members who will be coming soon with a determination to lead the SCOH for coming tenure 2014-15.
Sirjan Bastola IVSA Nepal
The experiences I had in this committee were very hard to forget. It was so worthy to discuss one-health problems on a world scale. Our committee was consisted of enthusiastic and capable people. I learned a lot of things through the activities with my great colleagues. I really appreciate our members, especially Fanis. I hope our committee will develop more and more in future. Thank you.
Ι am very glad to be a member of SCOH 2013-14.It gave me the opportunity to work at an international level and represent my country and promote one health. Lot of the things I learned from SCOH particularly; team work, social work and identify my own responsibility. SCOH 2013-14 did a very nice work in presence of Fanis as he lead the team brilliantly and maintain a good rhythm up to the end. Standing committee on One health celebrated the World Rabies day, World Tuberculosis day, World Veterinary day and many more and got very huge response from all over the world and makes some valuable international collaborations which help shaping the future of SCOH. Journal of Public Health enhanced the publicity to SCOH 2013-14. .I personally congratulate all SCOH member who worked responsibly and make the dream true in all sense. I expect very good days ahead for the upcoming members; and the founder members will remember all time in future . Thanks and congratulate to all!
”Between animal and human medicine there is no dividing line – nor should there be. The object is different, but the experience gained constitutes the basis of all medicine. (Vircow, 1821-1902). As SCOH´s first term comes closer to an end I feel grateful for the creativity and eagerness of my team members, dedicated to interdisciplinary and international collaboration which will benefit the health of animals and humans. Our team has consisted of members from a wide array of countries and backgrounds. We come from countries with different challenges within veterinary medicine, human medicine, climate and economy. It would be an understatement to say that learning about the different perspectives has been immensely inspiring and rewarding. My hope for the next term is that the members of SCOH continue to learn from each other and continue to reach out to individuals and larger organizations in the attempt of raising awareness of the One Health Concept. Thank you for letting me be a part of this network. ”Veterinary medicine is a people profession, where animals are the medium we use to express our skill and art” (N. Kent Ames)

I like the style of the publications. I like them .It seems that the team have done efforts to make it Publications are very good and important for us, I am very satisfied with your work Very spot-on and educational. Essential for the better understanding of public health issues by veterinary students and general public as well.
They work as handbooks! Very useful in order to take the veterinarian student a general idea about the disease! I really like the design!! We collaborated with Dr Liatis last year on World Rabies Day, and I though the leaflet he created was excellent creative, and with all the necessary information. I'm sure IVSA members found it useful. I think they are a great supplement to explain the programs/initiatives design should be better I think to be honest i haven´t read a lot of them. not sure if it reaches many people I wasn't aware of them I like it, but it would need much care about spreading of the publications.

11. And...a personal opinion/phrase/word that expresses you for the current SCOH 2013/2014 or/and its work? Has a lot to give in the future They are born of creativity Obviously it has done great job in the matters of public health. Rabies control is one of the greatest works done to reduce rabies. It’ s an admiring step from SCOH to plan a multidisciplinary collaboration. Well .SCOH did various activities in 2013/14. I hope that these activities will increase . You guys rock! The only way to improve and make prominent veterinary medicine and education is through collaboration and cooperation in the same way that you do it. We need more projects that could be beneficial for everyone for upholding Public Health issues. Good job :) It's the most interesting and active committee this year, in my personal opinion :)
"I think it's a great initiative but right now it's a bit unorganized. The events aren't divulged soon enough and there isn't a concrete help to the local chapters." An excellent start! You achieved more than we expected! Congratulations!! You did a great job and I hope, I will hear more from you after liking you on FB!
It has been a great pleasure working with the SCOH on World Rabies Day and our new joint project, the One Health Challenge. Our primary contact on these projects has been Dr Liatis, and he was instrumental in getting this collaboration moving. In 2013 the SCOH team did a great job in coordinating World Rabies Day events among IVSA members, which helped a great deal in raising awareness about rabies. This year, the SCOH team, with Dr Liatis again as our main contact, helped us to take our One Health Challenge global, bringing in the IFMSA and offering us a presentation slot at the IVSA Congress. We really appreciate our collaboration and look forward to continuing to work with the SCOH. We wish the current SCOH all the best, and hope to see them involved in One Health in their future careers. A great initiative for One Health Great work done in such short time, hope it gets better within the next years Great job in informing the IVSA members about your projects and getting so much people to join! Exemplary!
12 . Suggestions for future projects More awareness campaigns, motivate students to be more active I can not say anything you were doing them very good. "The pregnant, the cat and Toxoplasmosis. (Myth busters)Food safety (collaboration with students from Agriculture Schools)“ We would like to continue to work with SCOH on the One Health Challenge in future to make it an annual feature. Also, we would like to discuss potential collaborations that could give students a chance to visit a field project and volunteer there. I wish they would cover other Zoonoses as well-Protozoal, Helminths, etc. Working together with AWC ;) Built in more collaboration and let One Health approach be a problem solving Developing the collaboration with IFMSA and IPSF at a local level, in publishing the names and contacts of the representatives of those associations in each country.
