2O18/19 ST ANDREVVS 2O18/19 CONCERT ST ANDREVVS SEASON CONCERT SEASON

Visiting artists and musical stories weave their way through our concerts this Season as we welcome a host of exceptional international conductors and soloists – friends both old and new – to make music with our wonderful Orchestra.

sco.org.uk

Our concerts span four centuries from the 18th Century world of Mozart and Beethoven, to Nordic music from Nielsen and Stenhammar; and a taste of France including a concert marking the 150th anniversary of the death of the great Hector Berlioz. There is also brand new music from our Associate Composer Martin Suckling in a special concert marking 100 years of the Armistice. We are delighted to welcome back conductor Andrew Manze and pianist Francesco Piemontesi, who continue their exploration of Mozart Piano Concertos. The remarkable French pianist Bertrand Chamayou joins us in April to perform Ravel’s lush Concerto in G. We are particularly excited to welcome the enormously talented cellist Nicolas Altstaedt and the extraordinary oboist François Leleux – they take to the stage as both soloist and conductor. François Leleux will play and conduct a performance of Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’Eté with the captivating soprano Carolyn Sampson. Artists making their debuts with the SCO include the remarkable British clarinettist Mark Simpson, performing Nielsen’s concerto. This is the concerto he played when he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2006 title when he was just 17. I do hope that you enjoy discovering our new Season and I very much look forward to seeing you at our concerts. Gavin Reid Chief Executive Scottish Chamber Orchestra

NIELSEN CLARINET CONCERTO

Mark Simpson –

PLAYED BY MARK SIMPSON – CONDUCTED BY CRISTIAN MACELARU ––––– Thursday 13 September 2018 Younger Hall – 7.30pm MOZART Symphony No 35 in D, K385 ‘Haffner’ (18’) NIELSEN Clarinet Concerto (24’) PROKOFIEV Symphony No 1 ‘Classical’ (15’) BEETHOVEN Symphony No 1 (26’) ––––– CRISTIAN MACELARU – Conductor MARK SIMPSON – Clarinet Mozart’s ‘Haffner’ Symphony makes a rousing opening to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s new Season in St Andrews. Nielsen’s brilliant and sparky concerto follows, which the highly talented, young clarinettist Mark Simpson plays to perfection, as he did when he received the title of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2006. The concert concludes with a couple of ‘firsts’: the shenanigans and wit of Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’, and Beethoven’s fascinating homage to Haydn in his Symphony No 1.

SIMPSON HAS ALL THE TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT TO DEAL WITH EVERYTHING NIELSEN THROWS AT THE SOLOIST.

4

Cristian Măcelaru – A rising star who won the 2014 Solti Conducting Award.

THE CENTREPIECE OF THE CONCERT PROVED TO BE THE PERFORMANCE OF NIELSEN’S CLARINET CONCERTO, BY THE ÜBERTALENTED MARK SIMPSON. [IT IS] A WORK THAT SHOWS OFF THE FULLEST RANGE OF THE INSTRUMENT’S CAPABILITIES. Bachtrack

SCHUMANN

CELLO CONCERTO PLAYED AND CONDUCTED BY NICOLAS ALTSTAEDT I AM INVOLVED IN MANKIND, AND THEREFORE NEVER SEND TO KNOW FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS; IT TOLLS FOR THEE. John Donne Meditation XVII (1624)

WAGNER Siegfried Idyll (18’) SCHUMANN Cello Concerto (25’) SUCKLING Meditation (after Donne) World Premiere (10’) BEETHOVEN Symphony No 8 (26’) ––––– NICOLAS ALTSTAEDT – Conductor / Cello Marking the centenary of the Armistice, this special event represents a musical response to the legacy of war and the feelings of commemoration, love, loss, joy and peace it brings. Suckling’s Meditation is bound to be intriguing, with the inclusion of bells pealing from across Scotland. With the added luxury of one of the Season’s headline artists, Nicolas Altstaedt, a highly creative director and cellist in Schumann’s hugely expressive Concerto, the programme opens with Wagner’s beautiful lullaby and is completed with a work of brightness, optimism and good humour – Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony.

GOUNOD Petite Symphonie (21’) DEBUSSY (arr HENRI BÜSSER) Petite Suite (13’) Danses sacrée et profane (10’) TANGUY Incanto (06’) BERLIOZ Les Nuits d’Eté (31’) ––––– FRANÇOIS LELEUX – Conductor / Oboe CAROLYN SAMPSON – Soprano Immerse yourself in the heady perfumes and scintillating colours of France, as François Leleux leads you through a rich collection of music from his native country, past and present. Dazzling British soprano Carolyn Sampson is the soloist in Berlioz’s sensuous Les Nuits d’Eté, six heavily scented songs of love, loss and longing, with all the sumptuousness of a summer evening.

MOZART PIANO CONCERTO No 27 CONDUCTED BY ANDREW MANZE – PLAYED BY FRANCESCO PIEMONTESI ––––– Wednesday 27 February 2019 Younger Hall – 7.30pm STRAVINSKY Concerto in D (12’) MOZART Piano Concerto No 27 in B-flat, K595 (32’) STENHAMMAR Serenade in F (36’) ––––– ANDREW MANZE – Conductor FRANCESCO PIEMONTESI – Piano Piemontesi and Manze first came together in 2011 and reunited two years ago for memorable Mozart concerts that led to a bestselling CD. Mozart is their focus once more here – his last, mellow and magnificent piano concerto. The SCO is one of the world’s greatest Mozart orchestras and it finds an ideal foil in the freshness and spontaneity of Piemontesi’s playing.

Andrew Manze – The perceptive conductor Andrew Manze is one of the most versatile musicians around.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S FRESHEST, MOST EXCITING MOZART PIANISTS, FRANCESCO PIEMONTESI HAS TAKEN THE CLASSICAL MUSIC WORLD BY STORM SINCE COMING TO PROMINENCE ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO. Seen and Heard International

Francesco Piemontesi –

Manze adds a Scandinavian treat too: Stenhammar’s Serenade is nothing less than a love song to the city of Florence. He would not be drawn on the story behind the music but hinted “… it isn’t just the titles that are Italian.”

RAVEL

PIANO CONCERTO PLAYED BY BERTRAND CHAMAYOU CHAMAYOU BRINGS EVERYTHING HOME IN A WAY THAT IS DEEPLY PERSONAL, VIVID AND UNIQUE. NO ONE WHO LOVES FRENCH MUSIC OR EXQUISITE PIANO PLAYING WILL WANT TO MISS THIS.

GINASTERA Variaciones Concertantes (21’) RAVEL Piano Concerto in G (23’) BEETHOVEN Symphony No 4 (34’) ––––– JOSEP PONS – Conductor BERTRAND CHAMAYOU – Piano So many wonderful soloists in this concert! Each of Ginastera’s 12 ‘Variaciones’ puts different orchestral players in the spotlight, making a kind of kaleidoscopic spectacular. Then Bertrand Chamayou takes the stage for Ravel’s jazzy concerto. Ravel fell in love with jazz in the 1920s and fused it brilliantly with his own European heritage. Chamayou is sparky, dazzlingly virtuosic, but thoughtful and sensitive too: the ideal soloist. After such a high-octane first half, Pons closes the evening with Beethoven’s lustrous Fourth Symphony.

COMMUNITY CONCERTS

ORCHESTRA IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMME –––––

The SCO’s Orchestra in Residence programme, unique in Scotland, is delivered in partnership with the University of St Andrews. The residency enables people of all ages from across the local community to connect with SCO musicians through chamber concerts, masterclasses and side-by-side opportunities for music students, and creative music projects in schools. The SCO is also proud to support the nonauditioned Children’s and Youth Orchestras and the St Andrews & Fife Community Orchestra (StAFCO). The orchestras are conducted by Gillian Craig and meet weekly from September to April, with regular coaching from SCO musicians. The orchestras perform twice each year, including an annual StAFCO concerto performance with a SCO soloist. StAFCO has 70+ members and is open to all students and members of the local community who play an orchestral instrument at any level. The Children’s and Youth Orchestras are open to instrumentalists of school age who have reached at least Grade 2 standard. Orchestra in Residence activity is supported by a graduate traineeship, a paid position which enables a graduate from the University of St Andrews to work across both organisations, assisting project delivery and developing skills in arts management.
