It's tough being a single parent and if you are working away from home it makes it even tougher, however; there are some parents that have found ways to be able to work at home while taking care of their children at the same time. If this sounds a little frightening, it can be, however; if you plan it right and have the right mindset you can be quite successful at it. Here are a few pointers that might help you manage to work at home as a single parent. The first thing you should do is sit down with your children, especially if they are old enough to sit down and have a conversation. Parents are always concerned about their children but single parents tend to be even more concerned with how their kids feel. So it's important that you sit down with them and try to explain to them how important your work at home job is to everyone and help to understand both the benefits and disadvantages to the job at home. If you already happen to have a job that is away from home you may already have one foot in the door. Perhaps your boss is understanding to your situation and if that's the case you might want to sit down with him and see if you can't arrange for your office work to be done from home. There are a lot of employers that are willing to let their employees telecommute, all they have to do is ask. If you are not working already then you will need to find that job that is going to allow you to work at home and that you are going to make enough money off of. A third option is to simply start your own home business. If you still have a job and they won't let you telecommute but you are determined to work from home, don't quite your job! Because as a single parent that would be the worst thing you could do. You need to be able to support you and your kids. So, until you are totally sure that you will be able to support your family working at home, keep your day job. You can shop around for different types of work and when you find something you think you might be able to do, do it on a part time basis while you are still working and see how well it works out. If it turns out to be exactly what you are looking for and you can move into full time right away, then quit your day job. You will need to make sure that you have a specific work area that is designated to be your area and yours alone and your children are going to have to understand this. You need to have your work area well organized and you should be able to find whatever you need immediately so you are not wasting time looking all over the place for something you need for the job. Make sure that your time is well planned out. You need to set down specific hours that are specifically for your work and time that will be spent on doing chores and time that will be spent taking care of your kids needs. There may be times that as much as there are advantages to working at home, you may end up feeling like it's even harder though to work at home than away from home. Don't give up however.
It's a good idea if you figure out a way to network with other parents that work from home, especially those who are single parents. You can also find support groups that are there to help the parent who is single and is the sole support of their family. They will be able to give you help, offer suggestions and even try to help you to stay motivated. Most importantly after all is said and done you must find some way to include some time just for you. As hard as it may be to do, you will not be successful in your job if you don't find some way to give yourself the time you need to just be in the company of other adults and not with your children.
