Preface / Programme Note CONCERTINO for virtuoso solo bass trombone and eight instruments was written for Stefan Schulz, bass trombonist with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Aarhus Sinfonietta. It is a short piece in three movements, approximately 15 minutes all together, and the title of each movement should give the audience a slight whiff of the character of the music in question. The first movement is called BOSSA NOVA, literally new trend, a well known and much loved and highly sensual rhythmic pattern, purportedly invented in Brazil in 1958 by Joao Gilberto. In my piece the bossa nova takes its time to appear in its pure shape; I patiently build up the right corporeal feeling of the samba-based cool swing. And, lo-andbehold, when we reach the solo cadenza, it is all there. But only for a short while… When a slow, tonal (D-flat major) canon appears under the label ERNSTER GESANG, it is hardly surprising that a certain song cycle by Johannes Brahms (yes, “Vier Ernster Gesänge”) had been humming gently in the far recesses of my mind when composing this little bel canto. Whereas Hector Berlioz has absolutely nothing to do with the third and last movement, in spite of the title IDÉE FIXE., i.e. the specific sort of leit motif known from his famous programmatic works. The idée fixe in my piece is more like a ´bee-in-the-bonnet´. The movement is a rondo, the recurring ritornello persistently popping up again and again in the underlying accompaniment like a…well… idée fixe… Poul Ruders November 2008 .

Forord / Programnote CONCERTINO for virtuos basbasun og otte instrumenter er skrevet til Stefan Schulz, basbasunist i Berlinerfilharmonikerne, samt Århus Sinfonietta. Det er et kort værk i tre satser, med en spilletid på ca. 15 minutter, og den enkelte satstitel skulle gerne give publikum et vink om hvad der er i vente. Første sats har således titlen BOSSA NOVA, hvilket betyder ny stil eller ny mode. Denne velkendte, populære og sensuelle musikform, baseret på samba’en, blev efter sigende opfundet af brasilianeren Joao Gilberto i 1958. Her i min CONCERTINO tager det et stykke tid før bossa’en dukker op for alvor; der bygges tålmodigt op indtil den rette cool swing er nået, og så – i solo kadencen – folder bossa’en sig ud for alvor. Men kun en kort stund .... I anden sats, som har titlen ERNSTER SANG (tysk for ”alvorlig sang”) vil det næppe overraske at en vis sang-cyklus af Brahms (Vier Ernste Gesänge) har rumsteret i baghovedet hos komponisten, da han skrev denne lille bel canto. Derimod spiller Berlioz ingen som helst rolle i tredje- og sidstesatsen, med titlen IDÉE FIXE, selv om titlen knytter an til denne berømte franske komponists såkaldte leit motif-begreb (”lede-motiv”), som kendes fra hans programmusik. Den ”fikse idé” i min sats er snarere en ”grille”, en lidt skør, halstarrigt fastholdt idé. Satsen er bygget op som en rondo, med tilbagevendende ritorneller, som dukker op hele tiden i baggrunden, lige som en.... ja... grille, eller: fix idé.
