The Death of Ivan Ilyich was commissioned by Manchester International Festival (MIF Creative) with thanks for the support of the MIF Commissioning Circle. It was first performed on 7th July 2014, at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, by Jonathan Lemalu (bass-baritone), Steven Isserlis (cello) and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Tecwyn Evans.

COMPOSER’S NOTE “If one wants to be heard, one must speak out from the top of Golgotha, affirm the truth by suffering, and better yet by death.” The Death of Ivan Ilyich – a monodrama for bass-baritone, solo cello, two trombones, percussion and strings, – came to me after a long illness. It was one of the first major works that I composed after that time, as though Tolstoy himself was waking me from a long creative sleep. The text is taken from one of Tolstoy’s last and greatest novels. The story of a dying man’s excruciating physical pain and his emotional and spiritual crisis is composed architecturally in an intense and terse manner. A glimpse of light occurs towards the end of the piece, after Ivan Ilyich has examined his miserable life. The work ends with an instrumental Apotheosis. J.T.
THE DEATH OF IVAN ILYICH taken from the novel by Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) Смерть (Death) Смерть. Smyeart. (Death.) He has a strange taste in his mouth. It is Death. The doctor said so and so and so and so indicates that you have inside you so and so and so and so: but if that is not confirmed by investigation of so and so and so and so... and thus we must assume that you have so and so and so and so. And if we assume so and so and so... Then was his condition dangerous or not? The doctor ignored him and left him. “Doctors! Homeopaths! Diagnoses! Ikon healers! They all know nothing!” “Бо же мой!” “Bozhyea moy!” (“My God!”) “Бож (as though holding his stomach) “Pain again, pain again. It will never stop!” Ivan Ilyich saw he was dying. He hated his wife, but she had glimpsed the truth, he had lost his life. “Бо же мой!” “Bozhyea moy!” (“My God!”) “Бож “Opium, morphine. Undisguised pain!” Gerasim the innocent servant, he alone understood. He alone could relieve the pain. The lies! The torment! “You know and I know I’m dying so stop the lies, so at least stop the lying.” Gerasim the innocent servant, he alone understood. “Not right! Not right! My life is not right! Not right! Not right! My whole life is vile! Not right! Not right! My life is worthless. Not right! Not right! And now dreadful death. Not right! Not right! My life is not right!” (in sudden pain) “Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. ” “All that had seemed Joys now melted before my eyes. My whole life seemed worthless.” He turned on his back and began going over his life in a completely different way. In confession he softened. Took communion with tears in his eyes. “I want to live.” But he turned away and shouted: “Go away! Go away! Go away! Go away!” For three whole days he floundered inside a black sack, shared by invisible forces. Then an attack. (in sudden pain) “No. Oh. No. Oh.” Something started shining. His wife came to him – he glanced at her – his son kissed his hands. He felt pity for them. (with sudden radiance) “Forgive me. Forgive me. Where is death? There is no death, only light. What bliss! What joy! There is no death, only light! Only light!” He drew in some air, stopped in mid-breath, stretched out and died. Instrumental apotheosis.
