Welcome to the Different Voices concert, a concert with a difference, a concert with a story to tell and a rather special way of telling it. The main characters in our story will be played not by actors, but by instruments or sections of the orchestra. For instance this is a story of a girl called Ellie… And Ellie will be played by the flute.

Ellie lived in a big fancy house overlooking a gorgeous park. Ellie longed to go out into the park and play, but her parents thought it might be dangerous for her to go on her own and anyway it was much more important for Ellie to do lots and lots of homework. So Ellie spent far too much of her time looking out of the window and wishing she could have been in the park making friends. The flute is part of the Woodwind section of the orchestra. Let’s hear how the Woodwind instruments sound playing Ellie’s theme.

Ellie often saw Jo when she looked out of her window, because Jo was always going to the park. Jo’s favourite thing to do was to ride her bike as fast as she could, dodging obstacles, going over jumps and generally having an exciting time. The violin is part of a section of the orchestra called ‘The Strings’. Let’s hear what the strings sound like playing Jo’s theme.

Jo knew nearly everyone in the park, but she didn’t know Ellie, because poor Ellie was hardly ever allowed to go to the park. Her parents were always far too busy to take her, after all her father was the Mayor of the town, which made him a very important person. The Mayor’s theme is played by the brass section of the orchestra.

Being the Mayor meant Ellie’s father had a lot of big decisions to make about roads and shops and holidays and taxes and supermarkets, which meant he hardly had any time for Ellie and probably hadn’t even noticed that she was old enough to go to the park by herself now. To make matters worse, Ellie’s mother was a very important and busy person too. After all she was a Mayor’s wife, which is a job and a half in itself. Ellie’s mother is played by the harp.

Yes, Ellie’s Mother and Father were always very busy, which was why they had a Nanny called Talya who looked after Ellie. Ellie’s Nanny Talya was kind and loving, and often helped Ellie with her homework. And when Ellie’s parents were too busy to spend time with her, she was always there for Ellie. Talya understood how Ellie felt and in many ways she was more like a big sister or a best friend than a Nanny. Nanny Talya is played by the piano.

They couldn’t take Ellie with them, because they would be busy in meetings and cocktail parties and boring grown-up things like that. Ellie went back to her desk with a heavy heart to finish her never-ending homework, but when she looked out of the window she saw something in the park that she had never seen before: lorries… and builders! Something was going on and Ellie couldn’t think what it could be. She found it very hard to concentrate on her homework. When Talya saw poor Ellie staring out the window she told her to shut her books and head off to the park. After all it was a beautiful day and fresh air is very important too, maybe even as important as French and mathematics and Tudor history. But the park turned out to be full of surprises. There were lorries driving through and builders putting up fence posts and it wasn’t such a safe place to play in after all. And when some fence posts were left lying on a path, an accident was bound to happen…

Ellie saw Jo cycling straight into the fence posts, but it was too late to warn her. Jo came off her bike and grazed her knee. The builders wanted to get her cleaned up and give her a bandage, but Jo was too cross to let them do it. Instead she agreed to come back home with Ellie, where Nanny could attend to her injuries. And so it was that Ellie and Jo became friends. Jo even taught Ellie to ride her bike. Ellie had never ridden a bicycle before and she was a bit wobbly at first, but with Jo’s help she soon got the hang of it. The two girls were having so much fun that they didn’t notice the time flying by and all too soon Talya came to call Ellie for bedtime. Ellie waved goodbye to her new friend and went back into the house for a hot bath, a warm drink and a cosy bed. The next morning Ellie was woken early by the sound of the building work starting up again… and she jumped out of bed, got dressed very quickly, had her breakfast even more quickly, and rushed back to the park. The builders were making the most dreadful racket as they swarmed over the grassland, and they frightened a little dog, which chased their van right onto the building site. Jo took her bike and chased off after the dog, who was scurrying away into the distance…

Jo managed to rescue the little dog, but the man in charge of the building site was furious with her. He said she had disrupted the site, torn out their markers, and disturbed the work that was going on. He was so cross that he tried to take Jo’s bike off her. Ellie saw him. And he saw Ellie too. And that was when he stopped being cross and smiled instead – a big pretend smile. Ellie was sure she’d seen this man before. Suddenly she realised who he was! He was the man who came to the door to talk to her father! He came right over to Ellie and started to show her around the site as if they were the best of friends. Ellie was in a daze. It was all so confusing! Ellie’s new friends were pushed off the site and the gates were locked to keep them out. They were shocked… and horrified. How could Ellie be friends with the man in charge of ruining their park?! Jo cycled off to spread the news about what was happening to the park and how the girl from the big white house was in on it! By the time Ellie left the building site it felt like everyone knew, and Ellie didn’t have any new friends any more… That night Ellie lay awake in bed staring at the ceiling, and then she remembered something that might help her figure out what was going on. She slipped silently out of bed and crept along the landing in the dark to her father’s study…

Ellie looked in her father’s private desk where she found the rolled-up papers the man on the building site had given him – and when she unrolled the papers, she was horrified. Ellie had found the plans, The Developer’s plans, plans which showed how the park was going to be taken away and replaced step by step, first by blocks of luxury flats and then by a shopping mall, a cinema complex and a multi-storey car park. In the end there would be no park left at all! Determined not to give in, Jo, Ellie and their friends made a plan to come back again that night when nobody was watching the site and find a way to stop the builders once and for all! After dark they gathered near the park gates, but Ellie never arrived… She was still at home with her Nanny, who insisted it was far too late to go out. No matter what Ellie said, Nanny wouldn’t give in. Jo wanted to wait for Ellie, but eventually she gave up and headed off to the park with the other children. They snuck into the building site through a hole in the fence, and some of the children started to sabotage the diggers and cement mixers. They flicked switches and pushed the controls about and let the air out of the tyres. But someone smashed a headlamp on a digger, the noise attracted attention and the children were soon to find out that they weren’t alone on the building site after all…

The developer had been sleeping on the site – the same man who had brought the plans to Ellie’s father! He came storming out and took the children by surprise. Most of them managed to get away, but the man grabbed Jo and another boy and shoved them in the Portakabin, locked the door and left them there for the night! Ellie raced back through the park telling everyone she passed about the children that had been locked in the Portakabin. Her cycling was still shaky, but urgency kept her upright. She made it home just as her parents were coming home from their business trip, but she couldn’t stop the bike quickly enough and ran straight into the back of the family car! Her father, the Mayor, was about to get cross with her, but Ellie was on a mission and told him about what was going on in the park. She begged him to come and see for himself and her father agreed. Ellie knew that the developer couldn’t keep her friends locked up if the Mayor was there. Meanwhile back at the building site an angry crowd had gathered. The developer was trying to calm everyone down, but the situation was almost out of control. Ellie and the Mayor raced back into the park, but could she make her father understand that the park was important to everybody? Could the developer be stopped?
