It is possible to perform the work with all of the additional parts (Upper Voices/Chorus/SemiChorus) covered by participating choirs. Tenebrae should only sing small notes in the Tenebrae part when a Semi-Chorus is not present. Footsteps is the result of many months of researching texts to structure a narrative that cycles the seasons through the view of a lonely traveller who is constantly being moved on before being allowed to settle, finding comfort in the sky and stars above. The wind is cold. Leaves one by one are cleared from the night sky. The moon bares the garden.
Sea pearl, the wanderer’s guiding star.
I praise the disk of the rising sun. Midnight. I hear the moon Light chiming on St Paul’s.
Where every bird is bold to go, And bees abashless play, The foreigner before he knocks Must thrust the tears away.
Time to leave. The huge sail crackles, the anchor lifts, the anxious ship cuts the waves and flies in silence. *** SPRING
*** AUTUMN
The cherry blossoms have lost their fragrance. You should have come before the wind.
