Dynamic markings in parantheses ( ) are editorial. *) Geirr Tveitt has two “Tamburo” (with different “pitches”) which has been interpreted in the present score as one Tamburo Piccolo (Snare Drum) and one Tamburo Militare (Tenor Drum). Final decision on instruments and timbre at the discretion of the performers.


Geirr Tveitt A HUNDRED FOLK TUNES FROM HARDANGER After having settled in Hardanger in 1942, Geirr Tveitt collected almost one thousand folk tunes from the region, a region which is famous for (among other things) its local string instrument, the hardangerfele (Hardanger fiddle). From this vast compilation of authentic tunes he made a selection of one hundred tunes, which he arranged for piano in two volumes, his opus 150. Volume 2 (no. 51-100) was, however, lost in a fire in 1970. The first Volume of the piano version includes an extensive article dealing with the origins and characteristics of the original folk tunes. From 1953 to 1964 Geirr Tveitt arranged and orchestrated for large orchestra about sixty of the tunes from his opus 150, and with his skilful and imaginative orchestration, Geirr Tveitt succeeded in transferring the simple melodies to the concert platform.

SUITE NO. 2 (no. 16-30): Available in print (Full Score) from Edition Wilhelm Hansen: WH 29729. SUITE NO. 3 (no. 31-45): The original manuscript was lost in a fire in 1970, and the music considered to be lost altogether. Recently, however, in the 1990’s, copies of the score have surfaced. Restauration and editing of the score is pending. SUITE NO. 4 (no. 46-60): Available in MS copy from Edition Wilhelm Hansen. Printed edition in preparation. SUITE NO. 5 (no. 61-75): Available in print (Full Score) from Edition Wilhelm Hansen: WH xxxxx. SUITE NO. 6 (no. 76-?): The original manuscript was lost in a fire in 1970. No existing copies are known.
