Dynamics are loud throughout, and the ideal balance is one in which all the sounding tones in a tutti are equally audible. The percussion parts may be played on electronic instruments or amplified acoustical instruments, playing four-mallet rolls throughout. The contrabass instrument, as well as the violin, should be amplified. The keyboard part may be played on synthesizers, samplers, or organ. Keyboard timbres should be full but transparent. For the “manual” staves of the keyboard part, only 8-foot sounds should be used, with no octave doublings. The pedal tones should be only 16-foot sounds, sounding an octave lower than written. For instruments without pedals, a second keyboard player is required to play the bottom staff of the keyboard part (the pedal tones). Even on an instrument with pedals, an assistant is required to turn pages, and to play some or all of the pedal tones. The pedal line may also be played on double bass — alone or doubling the keyboard/organ. As an alternative, the keyboard part may be played on two pianos or piano four-hand. The pianists should play tremolos/rolled tones throughout, matching the sounds of the mallet percussion instruments. The violinist should carefully observe the written string indications.
