LILLIBURLERO VARIATIONS for orchestra (2009)

NOVELLO


Lilliburlero Variations was originally written for two pianos and was commissioned by the Dranoff Two Piano Foundation for its 2008 International Competition. The orchestral arrangement, made by the composer, received its first performance on 26 July 2009 at a BBC “Family” Promenade Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, given by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Tecwyn Evans. Lilliburlero is an Irish dance tune; it was first published in Henry Purcell’s Musick’s Handmaid (1689). Various inflammatory political lyrics were written to the tune in the late seventeenth century. Several composers have used the melody as the basis for compositions.

Instrumentation: 2 Flutes (2/Piccolo) 2 Oboes 2 Clarinets 2 Bassoons 2 Horns 2 Trumpets 2 Trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion (1 player):

side drum, 3 suspended cymbals, cymbals (pair), 3 bongos, tam-tam
