Preface / Programme Note There is a solid tradition in the history of Westen music of turning the theme of Niccolò Paganini’s CAPRICE NO. 24 for violin solo into a set of variations endemic to the time and style of each individual composer; Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, and Lutoslawski being the most prominent names. When I was asked by David Starobin to write a guitar concerto for him, I thought: “Well, why not have a go at it?” – bearing in mind that not only is Paganini the most celebrated violin-wizard of all times, but he was also a more than accomplished guitarist. There are 22 variations in all, numbers 1 to 16 all adhering strictly to the 16-bar pattern laid down by Paganini himself. From variation 17, though, the writing becomes more symphonic and the rigid 16-bar regime is not strictly followed any more. The last variation, Finale prestissimo, is a 6 X 16 bars “white-knuckle ride”, in which the hitherto soloistic role of the guitar gives way to that of a “primus inter pares” (i.e. “first among equals”). As with another set of variations of mine, CONCERTO IN PIECES (based on a tune by Henry Purcell), the nature and shape of my PAGANINI VARIATIONS may be compared to a stroll through a hall of mirrors: the “portrait” – the theme – is gradually being distorted out of all recognition, but it is still the same “original” walking by. Forord / Programnote Det er en hævdvunden tradition i den vesterlandske musik at komponere variationer over Niccolò Paganinis CAPRICE NR. 24 for violin solo, og hver ny variationsrække afspejler naturligvis sin egen tid og stil; mest prominent blandt Paganini-variationer er dem komponeret af Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov og Lutoslawski. Da David Starobin bad mig om at skrive en guitarkoncert til ham tænkte jeg “hvorfor ikke kaste sig ud i det?” – idet jeg havde i tankerne at Paganini ikke blot er alle tiders mest berømte “violin-troldmand”, han var også en habil guitarist. Jeg har komponeret 22 variationer i alt; nummer 1 til 16 holder sig strengt til Paganinis oprindelige 16-takters skema, men fra variation 17 bliver skrivemåden mere symfonisk, og 16-takters strukturen blødes op. Den sidste variation, Finale prestissimo, er en 6 x 16 takters hæsblæsende stafet, i hvilken guitaren bliver en “primus inter pares” (“først blandt ligemænd”) i stedet for hele tiden at være i forgrunden. Lige som et andet af mine variationsværker, CONCERTO IN PIECES (baseret på et tema af Henry Purcell) kan mine PAGANINI VARIATIONER sammenlignes med en tur i et spejlkabinet; “portrættet” – temaet – bliver gradvist forvrænget, efterhånden til uigenkendelighed, men det er stadig den samme “original” der portrætteres.
