Sound Carvings from the Bell Foundry
Brass Quintet
Instrumentation
Trumpet 1 in C (+ wine-glass in movement 6 and striking empty glass in movement 4)
Trumpet 2 in C (+ wine-glass in movement 6 and striking shell-rattle in movement 4)
Horn in F (+ ‘ballophone’ for trumpet 1 in movement 5)
Trombone (+ wine-glass in movement 6 and movement 2)
Tuba (+ ‘ballophone’ for trumpet 2 in movement 5)
Special requirements:
Movement 2 includes a single tuned D on wine-glass, played by trombone.
Movement 4 includes percussive use of a wine glass (trumpet 1) and a shell rattle (trumpet 2) in the final section. Where the composer’s rattle is not available, performers are asked to arrive at a replacement item. The shell rattle is made of 15-20 suspended scallop shells.
Movement 5 requires the ‘ballophone’ effect, where the two trumpets play into the bells of, respectively, horn and tuba while those instruments employ fast valve movement. This may require a seating change so that horn and tuba sit next to the two trumpets. The chords employing these effects are marked with a cross-hair sign, and are cancelled by ‘nat.’
Movement 6 requires pitched wine glasses in the final section, tuned to high E (trumpet 1), high high C sharp (trumpet 2) and high D (trombone). These should be readily available and fixed to a stable surface such as a small board, so as to be taken up and held without attracting undue attention. The ‘D’ wine-glass is also employed in movement 2.
The six pieces of Sound Carvings from the Bell Foundry are designed to be played in the published order, in which the two brief ‘chorale preludes’ are played second and fifth, but performers are encouraged to experiment with other orderings.

The materials of Sound Carvings from the Bell Foundry include ideas from An Dealbh
Mòr, a theatrical music and dance project for children for which I was music director in Bun Sgoil Shlèite, Isle of Skye, Scotland in spring 2006. This work is dedicated to the creative force behind that project, the artist Julie Brook.
