The Fairies was commissioned by Queen’s University Children’s Choir and their conductor Margaret Hunter, and was premiered by them in the Whitla Hall, Belfast, in spring of 1982. It was first broadcast by them as part of the ‘Let The Peoples Sing’ competition on BBC Radio 3. It is a setting of the poem of the same name by the Irish poet William Allingham.
