John Joubert O ETERNAL GOD for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO
15
Commissioned by Nicholas Fisher for the Choir of Gloucester Cathedral in celebration of the th composer’s 90 birthday on 20 March 2017 and dedicated to the memory of Michael Perham (died 17 April 2017), bishop and liturgist.
O eternal God, endue us with a settled, quiet, and composed temper of spirit, like that of the celestial natures. Make us constant and unmovable in the choice of our happiness. Fix a perpetual cause of joy in our hearts. And fill us with that heavenly sense of things which will be always springing up in delightful thoughts, and comfortable hopes, and cheerful praises and thanksgivings to you, our God. Amen. Symon Patrick, Fifteen Sermons upon Contentment, 1719
Duration: c. 5 minutes
Order Number: NOV296813

Matthew Martin THE FIFTH SERVICE for SATB choir and organ
NOVELLO
65
Commissioned by Simon Bell and written in memory of Margaret Bowen for the Choir of Dean Close School and Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum. The first performance was given on 9 November 2017.
TEXT
My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour; for he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shew’d strength with his arm, he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He rememb’ring his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promis’d to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Amen.

Matthew Martin PSALM 150 for SATB choir and organ
NOVELLO
79
TEXT O praise God in his holiness, praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him in his noble acts, praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him in the sound of the trumpet, praise him upon the lute and harp. Praise him in the cymbals and dances, praise him upon the strings and pipe. Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals, praise him upon the loud cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Paul Mealor THE SELWYN SERVICE (MAGNIFICAT & NUNC DIMITTIS) for SATB choir and organ
NOVELLO 121
MAGNIFICAT My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm, he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
NUNC DIMITTIS Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles; and to be the Glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to‌ Book of Common Prayer

Nico Muhly LORD, KEEP US MODEST WHEN WE CLAIM for SATB choir and organ
Chester Music 151
Commissioned by the Eastman School of Music through its George W. Utech Congregational Hymnody Fund. First performed on 26 October 2016 as part of the Eastman Rochester Organ Initiative (EROI) Festival.
Duration: c. 3 minutes
Text 1. Lord, keep us modest when we claim to know your heart's desires lest we invoke you to inflame belief's destructive fires. Let it suffice that we should find the star-stitched quilt of night a marvel that provokes our mind to seek yet deeper light. 2. From wonder let more wonder flow at how the atom spins, how cells are formed, evolve and grow, how life itself begins, how mass and energy give rise to yearnings in our hearts that reach beyond the farthest skies for where existence starts. 3. Then let our yearning hearts become an open door to prayer, a way to hear your Spirit hum through words and acts of care, a way to stretch our self-concern beyond our routine course, a way to live that helps us learn you are life's end and source. 4. And let these simple prayerful ways dispel the violence bred when faith is turned from thanks and praise to hatred, fear and dread. Yet even more may prayer make clear faith's universal claim: you hold the whole creation dear, and love is your true name.
Thomas H. Troeger

Nico Muhly MARROW for SATB choir unaccompanied
Chester Music 157
Commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Choir for the project 150 Psalms to be premiered by the Tallis Scholars during Utrecht Early Music Festival, September 1st, 2017.
Text O GOD, thou art my God: early will I seek thee. My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh also longeth after thee: in a barren and dry land where no water is. Thus have I looked for thee in holiness: that I might behold thy power and glory. My soul shall be satisfied, even as it were with marrow and fatness: when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips. Have I not remembered thee in my bed: and thought upon thee when I was waking? Because thou hast been my helper: therefore under the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. Psalm 63 vv.1–3, 6–8 Book of Common Prayer (1662)

Owain Park A PRAYER OF THOMAS KEN for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 211
Commissioned by Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir for the Association of Cathedral Voluntary Choirs in celebration of their 20th anniversary
th
First performed on 29 October at Wells Cathedral, performed by Association of Cathedral Voluntary Choirs conducted by Michael Cockerham
O God, make the door of this house wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship, and a heavenly Father's care; make it narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hate. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block to children, nor to straying feet; make it rugged enough to turn back the tempter’s power: Make it a gateway to thine eternal kingdom. Amen. Thomas Ken (1637-1711)

Anna Thorvaldsdottir HEYR ÞÚ OSS HIMNUM Á for SATB choir unaccompanied
Chester Music 219
Written for Skálholt Summer Concert Series, August 2005. Duration: 4–5 minutes
The work is written from an old Icelandic psalm by Olafur á Söndum (1560–1627). There are numerous verses in the psalm – four of them are used in this piece.
TEXT Heyr þú oss himnum á, hýr vor faðir, börn þín smá, lukku oss þar til ljá, líf eilíft þér erfum hjá, og að þér aldrei flæmumst frá.
Hear us in heaven, loving Father, as we, your small children, ask for the fortune to receive eternal life. We shall not stray from your path.
Þitt ríki þróist hér, það þín stjórn og kristni er, svo að menn sem flestir, safnist, Guð, til handa þér, fegin yfir því fögnum vér.
May we help your kingdom to grow here on earth. Following your guidance, we gather around in your name, and gladly celebrate.
Síst skarta sönglist má, sé þar ekki elskan hjá, syngjum því þýtt lof þá, Þér, Guð drottinn, himnum á. Maður rétt kristinn mun þess gá.
We cannot make a joyful song unless we are moved by love. So let us sing our gentle praise to you, Lord God, in heaven, as the truly faithful have done.
En þegar aumir vér, öndumst burt úr heimi hér, oss tak þá, Guð, að þér, í þá dýrð, sem aldrei þver.
When our poor souls pass away from this world, take us God to you, into your everlasting glory.
Amen, Amen, það eflaust sker.
Amen, Amen, may this be done.

Peter Dickinson LULLABY
for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 259
LULLABY from The Unicorns (1967/82/86) The Lullaby from ‘The Unicorns’ arose from an opera libretto I commissioned from John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006) in the late 1960s. In his story two unicorns are discovered in a remote part of Africa. Both the East and West want to obtain them for research so they send out rival expeditions. The Western technique is to lure the unicorn with a young girl singing a lullaby. Both East and West capture unicorns but the mythical animals escape in the end. I never completed the opera but I made a sixmovement suite from it called The Unicorns. There are three songs and three instrumental numbers and the first performance was given with Elisabeth Söderström and Solna Brass under Lars-Gunnar Björklund at Ekensbergskyrkan, Solna, Sweden on 31 October 1982. This version was recorded (Albany TROY 760) and my arrangement of the three songs for voice and piano was recorded by Marilyn Hill Smith (Albany TROY365). The career of the Lullaby continued with a version for clarinet and piano, which I premiered with Jack Brymer aboard the Sea Princess in the Mediterranean on 29 September 1986. The oboe version was for Sarah Francis, and Duke Dobing and I have recorded it for flute and piano (Naxos 8.572287). Lullaby can be played with a variety of solo instruments and is also available for piano left hand and piano solo, which I have recorded.
Lullaby, sing lullaby, Lullaby for a Unicorn. Come gentle beast with limpid eyes, Here your peace and pleasure lies. Lullaby, sing lullaby, Lullaby for a Unicorn. Lay your wrathful rage aside, Mitigate your burning pride. Lay your dangerous horn to rest, On the ivory of my breast. Lullaby, sing lullaby, Lullaby for a Unicorn. © the Estate of John Heath-Stubbs c/o David Higham Associates

Gabriel Fauré CHANSON D’AMOUR arranged by Jonathan Wikeley for SATB choir and piano
NOVELLO 269
J’aime tes yeux, j’aime ton front, O ma rebelle, ô ma farouche, J’aime tex yeux, j’aime ta bouche Où mes baisers s’épuiseront.
I love your eyes, I love your brow, O my rebel, O my wild one, I love your eyes, I love your mouth Where my kisses wear themselves out.
J’aime ta voix, j’aime l’étrange Grâce de tout ce que tu dis, O ma rebelle, ô mon cher ange, Mon enfer et mon paradis!
I love your voice, I love the strange Grace of everything you say, O my rebel, O my darling angel, My hell and my heaven!
J’aime tout ce qui te fait belle, De tes pieds jusqu’à tes cheveux, O toi vers qui montent mes voeux, O ma farouche, ô ma rebelle!
I love all that makes you beautiful, From your feet to your hair, O you, to whom I raise my pleas, O my wild one, O my rebel!

Bernard Hughes IF WE SHADOWS HAVE OFFENDED for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 295
If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumbered here While these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, No more yielding but a dream, Gentles, do not reprehend: If you pardon, we will mend: And, as I am an honest Puck, If we have unearned luck Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue, We will make amends ere long; Else the Puck a liar call; So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restore amends. William Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night’s Dream Act 5 Scene 1)

Kevin Olson A SUMMER SONNET for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 301
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; And ev’ry fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd; But thy eternal summer shall not fadey Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest; So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. William Shakespeare (Sonnet 18)

Tarik O’Regan I LISTEN TO THE STILLNESS OF YOU for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 323
‘I listen to the stillness of you’ for SATB choir unaccompanied from Mass Observation by Tarik O’Regan
Mass Observation was commissioned for the University of Michigan Chamber Choir, Jerry Blackstone, conductor, thanks to support from the William K. and Delores S. Brehm Choral Commissioning Fund, and the Barbara Abramoff Levy Fund
I listen to the stillness of you, My dear, among it all; I feel your silence touch my words as I talk, And take them in thrall.
My words fly off a forge The length of a spark; I see the night-sky easily sip them Up in the dark.
from Listening, published in Amores (1916), by D. H. Lawrence (1885–1930)

Julian Marshall IN DULCI JUBILO for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 363
In dulci jubilo Now sing with hearts aglow! Our delight and pleasure Lies in praesepio, Like sunshine is our treasure Matris in gremio. Alpha es et O! O Jesu, parvule, For thee I long always; Comfort my heart’s blindness, O puer optime, With all thy loving kindness, O princeps gloriae. Trahe me post te! O Patris caritas! O Nati lenitas! O Deeply were we stained Per nostra criminal; But thou for us has gained Coelorum gaudia. O that we were there! Ubi sunt gaudia In any place but there? There are angels singing Nova cantica, And there the bells are ringing In Regis curia. O that we were there! Anon.
