Score

Skrevet med støtte fra Statens Kunstfond og Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen og Dansk Komponistforening

Songs of Solitude and Night “Songs of Solitude and Night” is in two movements. The first movement has text from Völuspá from the Old Edda, and is called “Prelude”. The text is about creation of the earth, the stars, the sun, the moon and the first people on earth, Ask and Embla. The second movement is a poem by the faroese author William Heinesen translated into english by the faroese author Gunnar Hoydal and is called “Hogboy”. The poem begins like this: “Hogboy, the spectre with the cheery name, lives in the mound Maeís Hove in the Orkney island of Pomona. Here you can hear him singing bewildered songs in the dark. Playful Pomona girls are dancing in the moonlight around the old grave”……. Technical comments on the piece: 1) The bass singer and the bass drum he plays on should not be placed on stage, but in another place in the Hall. Ex. Behind the audience. 2) The tenor has to play Percussion too: (Glockenspiel, Guiro and Flexatone). 3) The Mezzosoprano has to play Percussion too: (Crotales and Vibraslap). 4) The conductor is also a narrator and shall recite the text in a clear and neutral way. 5) While the two sopranos are repeating the last three bars, they start leaving the Concert Hall. They should walk like beeing to a funeral. When they have left the Hall they stop singing when the reach the end of the phrase. They have to reapeat the phrase individually. The Mezzosoprano is also playing the Vibraslap until the end. 6) The Recorder player has to repeat the last two bars ad libitum until 20 sec. after the singers has stoped, and then make the last two bars diminuendo al niente together with the tenor. 7) The tenor has to repeat the last two bars ad libitum until 20 sec. after the sopranos has stoped, and then make the last two bars diminuendo al niente together with the Record player. When the two sopranos are repeating the first part of the word “Hogboy” sung staccato, they have to repeat on the vowel “o”, and last part of the word is a diphthong and they have to repeat on the first part of the diphthong. The musicans on stage should be placed in this order from the conductors left side: Soprano, Mezzosoprano, Recorder player and Tenor. Make a break of 20 sec. between the movements.
