Herbert Howells’ Stabat Mater was first performed on 22nd November 1965 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, by the Bach Choir with Robert Tear, tenor soloist, and conducted by David Willcocks. The preparation of this first typeset edition of Stabat Mater was made possible by the great generosity of The Herbert Howells Trust (2013). The Herbert Howells Trust and the publishers wish particularly to thank Stephen Cleobury, for his considerable help in the preparation of the score and orchestral material, and David Hill, for recovering the composer’s late changes to a number of tempi (marked in square brackets) from David Willcocks’ original vocal score.
