Commissioned by Ravinia Festival President and CEO Welz Kauffman, Program Director Kevin Murphy, and the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute for the 25th Anniversary of the Institute in 2013. First Performance of the Mezzo-soprano version: Julia Bentley, Mezzo-soprano and Lisa Kaplan, Pianist, presented by CONTEMPO, Artistic Director Shulamit Ran on February 4, 2014 at the University of Chicago in the Performance Hall, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. Duration: 6 minutes and 30 seconds NOTES: The Piano lid should be up on full stick. The term "molto rubato" is used often and means that it is not necessary to mechanically sing or play the exact rhythm (sextuplet, quintuplet, small triplet, etc.) but rather that you can consider those rhythms more gesturally. "Molto rubato" does not mean to drastically slow down the tempo. Grace-notes come before the beat. In large concert halls, it is advisable to use subtle sound reinforcement (amplificaltion) of the piano part so that the continuous resonances fill the space.

TWILIGHT BUTTERFLY for mezzo-soprano and piano

Augusta Read Thomas (2013)

Three layers of music are woven together through the entire song. #1: Loud, bell-like resonances in the lowest staff of the piano part. #2: The mezzo-soprano's song. #3: The elegant and sensous arabesques in the top two staves of the piano part.

{

RESONANT q = 48 - 60 (depending on concert hall's resonance) (Piano is L.V. Sempre; Damper Pedal should be held down for the entire song)
