Stuart MacRae – Two Scenes from the death of Count Ugolino Text from La Divina Commedia by Dante. Excerpts from Inferno Canto XXXII-XXXIII Numbers refer to: Canto.line, and are included only for the use of translators. Scene 1 32.124 Noi eravam partiti già da ello, 32.125 ch'io vidi due ghiacciati in una buca, 32.126 sì che l'un capo a l'altro era cappello;
33. 64
33. 76 Quand'ebbe detto ciò, con li occhi torti 33. 77 riprese 'l teschio misero co'denti, 33. 78 che furo a l'osso, come d'un can, forti.
33. 58
33. 66
Translation of text from La Divina Commedia (Dante) by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1867.) This is quite a literal translation of the original, and has been chosen to correspond closely to the text set in the piece. For a more expressive rendering Dorothy L. Sayers’ translation (London: Penguin Books, 1949) is recommended. Scene 1 32.124 Already we had gone away from him, 32.125 When I beheld two frozen in one hole, 32.126 So that one head a hood was to the other; 32.127 And even as bread through hunger is devoured, 32.128 The uppermost on the other set his teeth, 32.129 There where the brain is to the nape united. 32.130 Not in another fashion Tydeus gnawed 32.131 The temples of Menalippus in disdain,
32.132 Than that one did the skull and the other things. 33. 1 His mouth uplifted from his grim repast, 33. 2 That sinner, wiping it upon the hair 33. 3 Of the same head that he behind had wasted 33. 4 33. 5
Then he began: "Thou wilt that I renew The desperate grief, which wrings my heart
33. 7 33. 8 33. 9
But if my words be seed that may bear fruit Of infamy to the traitor whom I gnaw, Speaking and weeping shalt thou see together.
33. 67
When we had come unto the fourth day, Gaddo Threw himself down outstretched before my feet, Saying, 'My father, why dost thou not help me?'
Scene 2 33. 38 33. 39
Moaning amid their sleep I heard my sons Who with me were, and asking after bread.
33. 68 33. 46 33. 47
And I heard locking up the under door Of the horrible tower...
33. 51
'Thou dost gaze so, father, what doth ail thee?'
33. 42
[if] weep'st thou not, what art thou wont to weep at?
33. 69
33. 70 33. 42
And there he died... [if] weep'st thou not, [if] weep'st thou not
33. 70 33. 71 33. 72
...and, as thou seest me, I saw the three fall, one by one, between The fifth day and the sixth; whence I betook me,
33. 73 33. 74
Already blind, to groping over each, And three days called them after they were dead; Then hunger did what sorrow could not do."
33. 58
Both of my hands in agony I bit,
33. 61 33. 62 33. 63
...'Father, much less pain 'twill give us If thou do eat of us; thyself didst clothe us With this poor flesh, and do thou strip it off.'
33. 42
[if] weep'st thou not, what art thou wont to weep at?
33. 75
33. 64
I calmed me then, not to make them more sad.
33. 42
[if] weep'st thou not, what art thou wont to weep at?
33. 66
Ah! obdurate earth, wherefore didst thou not open?
33. 76 33. 77 33. 78
When he had said this, with his eyes distorted, The wretched skull resumed he with his teeth, Which, as a dog's, upon the bone were strong.
