TELL US A STORY THAT SUMS UP ALDI

WHO CAN APPLY?

Christmas is always really busy. One year, in true Aldi style, everyone just came in early - without being asked. When the Store Manager asked why, they said that they wanted to support him in the same way he supports them. Magic really.

Graduates, students or school leavers who are ready to buckle down and drive productivity. The teams are small and it can get tough, so you have to want to work hard. And, of course, you have to have that extra little ‘sparkle’, bubbling with a positive personality that makes people excited about getting into work.

DESCRIBE THE IDEAL EMPLOYEE IN THREE WORDS Like. No. Other.

TELL US A SURPRISING FACT ABOUT ALDI? As the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK today, we can spot the team who’s able to smash records. Which is why we’re now the official supermarket sponsor of Team GB.

ARE THERE JOBS FOR BOTH SCHOOL LEAVERS AND GRADUATES? We have a brilliant Area Manager Programme for graduates, an Industrial Placement Scheme for undergraduates and Apprenticeships for school leavers. Basically, if hard work is your version of good fun, there’s room for you at Aldi.

ARGYLL AND BUTE COUNCIL Argyll and Bute is an outstanding place to live and work and is one of the most diverse local authorities anywhere in the UK, bringing a wealth of culture as well as challenges in delivering a wide range of public services. We are ambitious for our area and with our partners are driving forward our shared vision to grow our economy and our population for the future.

TELL A STORY THAT SUMS UP ARGYLL AND BUTE COUNCIL

WHAT MIGHT SURPRISE PEOPLE ABOUT ARGYLL AND BUTE?

Paul is 25 and joined the council’s Communications Team after graduating with a degree in Journalism and Politics. He’s travelling to one of the island communities for a council project. Before his trip, he liaises with national media and film crews, he’s on hand to answer questions from the media, as well as managing social media channels and press releases. His efforts then secured lots of national press coverage, including a slot on the 6pm news.

We’ve got a little bit of everything: from our larger towns like Oban and Helensburgh to the beautiful remoteness of Kintyre and its beaches. Not to mention the mountains, lochs and rivers which offer endless outdoor opportunities. We’re also much closer to the central belt than you think, which opens up even more possibilities for work and play.

Travelling home by ferry, Paul later goes surfing at one of the many beaches. Friends join him at a great local pub nearby. It’s been a great couple of days, and the flexitime he’s built up from Friday’s early start means he can have a long weekend very soon.

We need to grow our population and bring more people to live, work and visit Argyll and Bute. Some areas are more remote than others, so we need to make sure everywhere is as accessible as possible. In essence, we need to make the most of all the fantastic opportunities we have!

INTERVIEWS:

ANSWERING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS In a pre-interview panic, everyone wonders whether they’ll be asked a question that will trip them up. It’s perfectly natural paranoia, but it’s absolutely not what most interviewers are trying to do. To give you a clearer idea of what ‘those’ questions really mean, let’s take a look at how you can prepare… DO YOUR RESEARCH The only thing you can ever be ‘caught out’ on in an interview is not knowing enough about the company you’re applying to, or the job that’s on offer. Make sure you can answer the following questions: • • • • • •

means how well you understand and connect with the company’s business and ideals. It’s also about knowing what makes you tick. That could be whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert; or it could be whether you’re likely to turn up with a hangover three days a week. Consider who you are, and who you want them to see. Career is about whether you represent a good investment at the company; if you’re likely to want to progress and grow under guidance or leave after three months. Interviewers want to know that you’ll be committed to your work rather than just grind out the hours watching the clock. Competencies are about your ability to do

What does the company do? What do they stand for? What sort of people work there? What are the core competencies for the role? What skills will it require? What soft skills do they value?

A large proportion of interview questions will be geared to finding out about the three Cs:

the annual

‘TRICKY’ QUESTIONS Often the questions people are most scared of do one of two things: assess how creatively you respond to problems or ask a common question in an unusual way. Questions like “If you were an animal, what animal would you be?” are an opportunity for the interviewer to see who you are underneath the prep. Highlight your soft skills that fit the core competencies in the job description, but remember to inject a bit of character, something that reflects who you are. They’re assessing what you’re like to work with too. Head-scratchers like “Our product has been criticised for [something bad], what do you think of that?” are more about balance. Most companies don’t want someone who blindly follows the company line, they want somebody who understands it. For example, a cigarette manufacturer would prefer someone who believes in people’s right to choose their vices to someone who denies or doesn’t care about the potential health impacts.

KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS

Character, Career and Competencies. It’s essential that you spend some time thinking about what you have to offer in each of these areas. Character is about corporate fit, which

Being able to spot these questions and respond with an answer that reflects your best you is the essence of a good interview. Spend some time forming a clear, realistic view of your goals and achievements.

the work. Sometimes this means essential knowledge, or the nuts and bolts that you’ve learned in academia, others times it means the ability to think creatively or as part of a team.

If you can’t work out a question, take a moment to think and answer as honestly as possible. It’s better to be you than to fake being someone else.

page 44

MAKING AN IMPRESSION and stop them when they pop up; note the Consequences of worrying to strengthen your resolve to cut it out.

You’re constantly giving out signals: about your confidence, about your thoughts and about your personality type. These are things that everybody, your interviewer included, judges with their gut. The good news is that there are preparations to help you win over interviewers’ guts as well as their minds…

MANAGE YOUR BODY LANGUAGE Body language can project positivity or negativity, openness or a closedmindedness. In general, interviewers will favour the former in both cases.

KNOW YOUR INTERVIEWER Researching a company is about more than knowing what it does, it’s about understanding its corporate culture. That means getting a sense of the environment at its offices, its objectives and ideals. It’s no good turning up and projecting power and salesmanship at a company that values careful thought and a considered approach.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION Power suit or jeans and a smart top? The answer’s not as obvious as you think, and the work you’ve done in researching the company is the only way to get an answer. A trendy start-up might not want a stuffy suit, and we’d be surprised if a Big 4 auditors would consider a scruffy candidate. It’s all about fitting in. Check the company’s website or even visit the building to get some intel. James Reed, head honcho of REED Recruitment, advises wearing something “slightly more formal than what you’d wear day-to-day on the job”.

THE ANNuAL

CONTROL YOUR NERVES Panic releases adrenaline, which makes you sweat, shake and even disrupts your ability to listen properly. Fortunately there are lots of different techniques you can use to take control. Harvard Business School Professor Amy Cuddy recommends doing a few power poses before an interview. These postures raise your arms and open your body out (Google “power poses” for some great images), and they positively affect your body chemistry. Others recommend relaxation exercises. Try breathing five seconds in, five out for five minutes to calm racing thoughts. If you’re more into rationalising your worries, use the cognitive behavioural therapy ABC model. Identity Adversity by listing each challenge you’re worried about and addressing them in turn; list your unhelpful Beliefs and fears so you can spot

Start with a good handshake. Psychologists say the key is a firm grip, eye contact, a natural smile, and two or three seconds for the shake. Once you’re seated, watch your posture. If you find yourself slouching, hunching over or folding your arms, don’t panic. Calmly open out again. If you feel your heart racing, breathe slowly for a moment. Don’t be afraid of the interviewer spotting you as you check your nerves or adjust your posture, they expect interviewees to get the jitters, and taking a moment to regain your composure shows self-awareness. When the interview is in full flow, making regular eye contact, sitting forward in your seat and keeping your hands visible are all ways of showing that you’re engaged, open and honest.

ESTABLISH A RAPPORT The interview isn’t all about you. Make sure you’re mindful of what your interviewer is asking, and that you’re engaging with them directly rather than projecting your own answers onto their questions. Try to be aware of how the interviewer is responding too, after all, making a connection is your ultimate aim.

APPLICATION TIPS:

GETTING YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR Applying for jobs is all about ensuring that you stand out from the crowd. Most employers spend between 30 seconds and a minute skimming CVs and applications, so you don’t have a lot of time to show them you mean business. Use it wisely. HONING YOUR CV Once you know what the employer is looking for, it’s time to make sure your CV reflects exactly why you think you’re the right person for the job. A good CV should be: •

Short and sweet. One page of A4 is enough, two is sometimes permissible, anything more goes in the bin. A reason to meet you. As graduate and talent expert Rob Cross says, “Think about the person who is scanreading your CV in the midst of a pile of dozens, maybe hundreds… What are the three things that person needs to know about you that distinguish you?” A skills showcase. Listing the things you’ve done is fine, but employers want to know what you learned, contributed and achieved - not just where you’ve been. Searchable. Lots of CVs end up in online databases, think about what keywords fit your career goals and get them in there. Tailored to the job. Make sure the

skills, goals and even hobbies you share fit the specific job description you’re applying for. •

Accurate. Spelling, grammar, skills, experiences all need to be correct. No lies or slip ups, they all get spotted.

WRITING A COVER LETTER A cover letter is another opportunity to make a connection with your potential employer, or to bury your best points beneath paragraphs of waffle. A good cover letter:

MAKING ENQUIRIES If you’re not sure about how to go about the application process, or you want tips on what the company is looking for, there’s no harm in contacting the company to seek advice. All it takes is a quick email or phone call and a couple of well thoughtout questions, and there’ll be somebody in the office who knows your name. That’s an advantage not to be sniffed at. Remember to read the job description,
