Welcome to Refugee Festival Scotland 2015 Produced by Scottish Refugee Council, Refugee Festival Scotland is an annual celebration of the contribution refugees make to the richness and vibrancy of life in Scotland and the welcome offered by local people.
Meanwhile over 20 refugee-led community groups and integration networks cook up a storm of multi-cultural feasts, music, dance, film and performances as part of our family friendly Community Celebrations programme celebrating Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink.
The festival began in 2000 as a one-day food and music event in George Square. Today, it comprises over 100 events, centred around World Refugee Day on 20 June. It has become one of the most exciting and lively events in Scotland’s cultural calendar, packed with music, art, film, live performance, community-led events and more.
Elsewhere, Palestinian Freedom Theatre bring the UK tour of their politically charged theatre production The Siege to the Tron Theatre. Emerging talent Yol Theatre perform their musical play Hayat Yolu in both Turkish and English at the Citizens Theatre.
In celebration of the festival’s journey and to mark Scottish Refugee Council’s 30th year, we are thrilled that this year Refugee Week Scotland has become Refugee Festival Scotland.
Celebrate a diverse and welcoming Scotland One thing we know hasn’t changed in the last three decades is how difficult it can be to rebuild your life in a new place after experiencing war or persecution. But refugees manage to adapt and have much to offer their new communities.
We’ve extended the dates from Wednesday 3 – Sunday 21 June and curated strands of the programme to bring you a more exhilarating festival experience than ever before.
As attitudes towards migrants in the UK grow more volatile, there is something you can do – join us in celebrating a diverse and welcoming Scotland this June.
Scottish Refugee Council 30th birthday events We’re collaborating with a range of fantastic partners to bring you an engaging commemorative programme, with everything from magical markets to music nights, highlighting the heritage of refugees in Scotland and marking our three decades (see pages 7 – 11 for details). A festival for everyone We take to the streets of Glasgow with our artist-led Welcome Tent offering a variety of art workshops, live performances and, of course, a welcoming cup of tea.
Together let’s celebrate Scotland as a vibrant and thriving place that offers protection to those who’ve fled war or persecution, where refugee rights are respected and where they can rebuild their lives in safety with dignity. A place we can all be proud to call home and that we have all contributed to. Suzi Maciver Arts & Cultural Development Officer Scottish Refugee Council

Celebrate diversity and welcome Danusia and Wafa Danusia, whose father was a refugee from Poland, was involved with Scottish Refugee Council in its earliest days, setting up its very first office in Glasgow. Wafa has worked with Scottish Refugee Council for 15 years, after fleeing Iraq with her family.
“Refugees are not a new phenomenon. We are all refugees from somewhere.”
Danusia: Life is short and precious and by the blessings of where we live we have been saved from the ravages of war compared to other countries. We have a multicultural society rich in culture and education, filled with the experiences of others from whom we should grow and learn to be better human beings. Without the influences way back from the Irish, the Vikings, the Romans, we would not be as cultured, educated or rich. Refugees are not a new phenomenon. We are all refugees from somewhere. We should celebrate life and freedom, irrespective of colour or creed, irrespective of roots and we should learn that bridges are a two-way crossing. Wafa: Leaving Iraq was one of the hardest decisions that I ever had to make, but in the end my family had to leave for our safety. When I arrived in Scotland, I claimed asylum with the support of Scottish Refugee Council, which went on to become like a second home. My family never encountered any negativity in Scotland and we met lots of people, especially through the arts, who went on to become great friends.

Scottish Refugee Council – supporting refugees in Scotland for 30 years This year Scottish Refugee Council celebrates its 30th anniversary. As an independent charity, over the last three decades, we have supported thousands of people who have fled horrific situations around the world. We are proud to have helped people rebuild their lives here in Scotland and to raise their children in a safe place free from torture, persecution and human rights abuses. In 1985 Scottish Refugee Council opened its doors with just a handful of staff and volunteers. We provided advice and support to refugees from Vietnam. For two decades after the Vietnam war people had to flee the humanitarian crisis in the country. Many came to the UK seeking safety. Meanwhile, General Pinochet’s brutal military dictatorship forced many people to flee Chile. Many ended up in Scotland, with Chilean solidarity groups forming in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Dundee. The Bosnian Programme ran from 1992 to 1996. Hundreds of Bosnians were evacuated to Scotland during the brutal conflict following the break-up of Yugoslavia, during which more than half of the Bosnian population were forced from their homes. We opened a reception centre in the seaside town of North Berwick and led a medical evacuation programme. In May 1999 we ran reception centres to house Kosovans fleeing ethnic cleansing. The Kosovo Refugee Protection Programme was our largest
ever initiative. The first group to arrive consisted mainly of women and children, and included a 99-year-old woman and a 10-week-old baby. As well as these large-scale programmes, we also offered advice and support to people arriving independently to claim asylum in Scotland – for example, those escaping genocide in Rwanda in the mid 1990s and those fleeing ongoing war and persecution in Iraq. In a major development in 1999, the city of Glasgow signed up to the UK Government’s asylum dispersal scheme. This meant that the city became a key location for the Government to send people seeking asylum from all over the world. Our advice and support was critical in ensuring the successful integration of refugees in their new communities in Glasgow at this time. Around 9 million Syrians have had to flee their homes since conflict broke out there in 2011, escalating to the most severe humanitarian crisis of modern times. The UK has started to resettle a very small number, with some of the most vulnerable people arriving in Glasgow. At Scottish Refugee Council we will continue to do all we can to support ‘New Scots’ to build full and successful lives here.
We would like to thank all of our generous supporters who’ve helped to make our work possible over this time.

‘Welcome’ Image: Iman Tajik
Birthday Events Scottish Refugee Council is delighted to collaborate with a range of fantastic partners to bring you an exciting and engaging commemorative programme highlighting the heritage of refugees in Scotland and marking our 30th anniversary. We’ve teamed up with the University of Glasgow History Department to kick off a project to capture Refugee Lives in Scotland: Oral Histories from the last 30 years. From our earliest days, we’ve supported refugee artists to experiment and develop their voice and creative practice. This year we launch Being Human, a programme of visual art by Iranian refugee artists living in Scotland. The exhibitions explore the central theme of ‘being human’ and how the refugee experience has influenced the artists’ practice. Did you know Scotland was home to thousands of Belgian refugees from 1914 – 1918? Come to the launch of our new arts and heritage project Lest We Forget, where today’s refugees uncover and document the experience of those that fled to Scotland 100 years ago. Over the last 30 years, the rights of LGBT people in Scotland have progressed considerably. However, people continue to be persecuted in many countries because of their sexual orientation. LGBT Unity refugee and asylum seeker group celebrate our right to live and love in Scotland with their Queer Gaylidh Dance Party. To highlight the entrepreneurial spirit of refugees, we’re supporting The Southside Souk to offer a platform for social enterprise with a multi-cultural market of craft, food, music and performance.
We’ve commissioned contemporary jewellery designers O-PiN to create a limited edition 30th anniversary badge reflecting the contribution refugees have made to life in Scotland. Create your own badge at their one-off festival workshop. Amina Women’s Resource Centre partners with Abertay University Dundee to present a mini film festival highlighting past and present experiences of refugees in Scotland. We’re not the only one’s celebrating an anniversary this year. The Glasgow Girls: Ten Years On brings together the various artistic mediums in which this story has been told with BBC short documentaries, National Theatre of Scotland performances and discussion with the girls as to what’s next for their campaign. We’ll announce even more events throughout the rest of our 30th year so keep an eye on our website for details scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk.

The Glasgow Girls: Emma, Roza, Agnesa and Amal.
Celebrate rights The Glasgow Girls The Glasgow Girls made headlines – and eventually a film and a musical – with their work campaigning against dawn raids, child detention and deportations after their friend Agnesa was detained. This year they celebrate their 10th anniversary as a group.
“Diversity is a positive thing, not something to fear.”
Amal: It is not easy to start a new life elsewhere but refugees manage to adapt to what could be a new language, culture and way of life within a short space of time. They bring new skills and experiences that benefit Scotland. We can learn so much from refugees such as their culture, food and also their ability to be resilient after all they have experienced. The main thing that made me feel welcome were the people. From my teachers to community members and even shopkeepers, they all played a part in making me and my family feel welcomed. We should celebrate these people and the positive impact they have in changing people’s lives. Roza: Diversity is a positive thing, not something to fear. We learn from people who have different experiences and perspectives on things. Diversity promotes personal growth and a healthy society. Diversity changes stereotypes in communities, what people once thought can easily be changed and can bring the community much closer because of it. It strengthens communities and the workplace.

Celebrate protection Qussai Qussai arrived recently from Syria, which he had to flee because of the civil war there. He has been in Scotland for three months.
“Scotland is beautiful. My favourite thing about it is the weather. Honestly!”
Qussai: Scotland is beautiful. My favourite thing about it is the weather. Honestly! The reason I am here is safety – that is the basis of everything for me. But also I used to be a dentist, and I think Scotland is a great place to practice. I just want to complete my studies here and to start using my skills. Mainly I know the people who came here also from Syria, but I really want to know more Scottish people. I need to learn the language more so that I can talk to people and make friends. I love playing football and I hope that might be a way that I can meet more people.

Iqra, Halima, Qeyra and Jabril.
Celebrate dignity Halima, Jabril, Qeyra and Iqra Halima is a mother of three, from Somalia. She has lived in Scotland for just under a year. She has three children – Jabril, Qeyra and Iqra.
“ Scotland is home now.”
Halima: I have found people in Scotland to be really friendly – my neighbours have been very kind. I lived in London before and life was more difficult. But now I am here and we are happy. The kids really enjoy school – they have a big mix of friends and they are learning a lot. I don’t mind what my kids do when they are older – but the important thing is that they can decide. I love cooking and I also love art. When I do painting my mind is calm and I can forget about my problems. Scotland is home now.
