4 Post Race Recovery Tips Scott Cathcart
Training and completing a long race is a gratifying experience. It does not matter if it is a 5k, half marathon, or a full marathon. Pushing your body to its limits and accomplishing a goal will always be a significant achievement. Unfortunately, hard work does not stop after you cross the finish line. You need to properly take care of your body after the race to ensure it can bounce back after the grueling achievement.
KEEP MOVING AFTER RACE Your body will likely want to drop to the ground immediately after crossing the finish line, but it is crucial to keep moving. Sitting down after so much activity will lead to severe muscle cramps. Unwind after the race by slowing walking around the race facilities for about 10 to 15 minutes. Once you have seen everything the event has to offer, finish your cool down by stretching your muscles.
EAT THE RIGHT FOODS Your body will desperately need to be replenished after a long race. Grab a sports drink after completing the race to give your body some much-needed electrolytes and sugar. Wait about an hour before you eat. The first meal after the race should be filled with carbohydrates and protein. Drink lots of water and continue eating lots of protein in the days after the race.
The only way to fully recover from a long race is by taking some time to relax. Most large race events offer free massages to the participants. Take a cold bath shortly after you get home. This will increase blood circulation, which will reduce your soreness in the morning. Refrain from strenuous physical activity for the next few days. If sitting on the couch makes you stir crazy, then take a short walk around the block.
Take Time to Relax
Keep Your Mind Right
It is not uncommon for runners to feel depressed after completing a race due to the huge drop in endorphins. Get your mind right by thinking about everything you had to do to accomplish such an impressive feat. It is also a good idea to go out with some friends to celebrate your accomplishment.
