As a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Design Architecture degree from the University of Newcastle (2022), I bring a strong passion and understanding for design. My studies have given me a solid foundation in design principles, methodologies, and concepts, as well as real-world experience through my part-time work as an architectural assistant. I am eager to utilize my skills and unique perspective to make a meaningful impact in the industry and further develop my career in architecture.

MOVEMENT

City within a city brief:

The design brief prompts architectural practices to consider the role played by architecture in shaping urbanization. More specifically, the brief seeks to generate speculative proposals for a model city that is both situated within, and yet remains distinct from, the existing fabric of Newcastle. Inhabiting a population of 3,000 residents.

Located in Mayfield North, NSW the site was operated by the Broken Hill Propriety (BHP) as a major steelworks company. BHP played a massive role in the economic turnover of Newcastle, exhausting everything the site had to offer.

Movement addresses the implications of urban sprawl and the automobile. The word movement underpins how this infrastructure molds the way people inhabit urban environments. These urban environments are driving the decline of the environment and inducing an unhealthy way of living.

This individualistic urbanism creates a collection of anti-social spaces, diminishing human encounters and physical health of pedestrian thoroughfare. A discourse against this urbanism outlines the framework that Movement applied to the “city within a city” brief and its ability to further influence a relevant surrounding context.

MASTER PLAN

The masterplan proposes a central green space and mound organization that starts to depict foot and bike paths as well as the building lines for the residential blocks. Limiting access to site by car places importance on the use of the mobility hubs. The mobility hubs are demarcated with the black roofs and influence a healthier way of living by providing parking and external transport services to the site. Those who live there walk and ride bicycles to get to their homes and around site.

Brief:

Yield is a project that critiques public space. It asks who owns the land we stand on,and what are allowed to do with it. Imagining its possibility and finding its potential. The site is a small part of Pacific Park facing Newcastle Beach, That only 40 years ago, many people called home. The making of public space in Newcastle, and cities more broadly, has become confused with the making of buffer space, usually in the shape of a lawn. These vague landscapes give the illusion of nature, but its simplicity and neatness hides a reality of Country from us.

In my design scheme, I look at the effects of modernism in public space. The swift development of Newcastle with the focus for economic growth has resulted in the loss of its ingrained cultures. With that in mind, my YEILD project looks at providing a public space for the art culture scene in Newcastle. The council have a funding program that aims at promoting the cities culture, heritage, and art. Although a great initiative, it is highly competitive.

This public space provides an environment for artists to create and express their work. Bridging the gap between being a self-funded artist and receiving money from council to become a professional. The artists are able to work in this space for free, to help facilitate their aspirations of becoming a professional.

Spcaes are divided into two programs, the studio and exhibition space. The studio space which allows artist to create, is subservient to the exhibition space which enables artists to express their work to the public. However, I also imagine the studio and exhibition can be used by other creators and performers. Such as:

• Studio space being utilized as a backstage.

• Exhibition space being utilized as a performance area.

COVERT HOUSE

Brief:

The Brenner family requires a three-bedroom home located at 172A Darby St, Newcastle, NSW, on a battle-axe site with a total site area of 190m2. The house should accommodate the parents and two growing children with one bedroom on the ground floor that will be used by the grandmother when the oldest child moves out. The design should include the following specifics:

• Spacious art studio and entrance for clients.

• Separate bathroom facilities and no en-suite.

• A connection to nature and privacy.

The house should be designed to take advantage of the narrow footpath for access and maximize the 190m2 site while providing the Brenner family with the comfortable and functional home they require. The design should prioritize natural light, privacy, and a connection to nature, ensuring that the family has a peaceful and relaxing environment to call home.

CONCEPT & PROGRAM

Studio 3 | 2021

The design follows a central double height spine down the center of the building, the central volume assists with circulation and brings a sense of openness to the space with it’s double height ceiling. The selection of a butterfly roof design allows for water collection, utilizing the central spine form.

Along the exterior of the building, a series of light weight concrete extrusions were designed to promote plant growth. Allowing a connection to nature from the interior and exterior to be achieved.
