Dear Seven Hills Community,

On behalf of our entire school family, I want to thank you for your support during the 2023-24 school year. It was, by any measure, another phenomenal year!

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS

In May, 189 seniors, juniors, and sophomores took a total of 421 college-level Advanced Placement exams. A phenomenal 93% of those exams yielded college-qualifying scores of 3 or higher. In addition, 104 students were named AP Scholars, scoring 3 or above on three or more AP exams. As usual, our students’ scores on each of the AP courses we offer were well above those of college-bound students both in Ohio and across the country.

In a very competitive college admissions year, the class of 2024 has acquitted itself beautifully. The 89 members of the class have matriculated to 52 colleges in 24 states (as well as two students who are studying overseas): Barnard College; Boston College; Brown University; Bryn Mawr College; Carnegie Mellon University; Case Western Reserve University; Colby College; Colorado College; CUNY Hunter College; Dartmouth College; Drexel University; Georgetown University; Goucher College; Indiana University; Miami University (Ohio); Middlebury College; Northeastern University; Northwestern University; Ohio State University; Ohio University; Parsons School of Design, The New School; Purdue University; Rhode Island School of Design; Rice University; Ringling College of Art and Design; Roger Williams University; Seattle University; Swarthmore College; Trinity College; Tulane University; University of Arizona; University of California, Santa Barbara; University of California, Irvine; University of Chicago; University of Cincinnati; University of Colorado Boulder; University of Denver; University of Illinois; University of Massachusetts Amherst; University of Michigan; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; University of Notre Dame; University of Southern California; University of St. Andrews, Scotland; University of Tennessee; University of Virginia; Vanderbilt University; Virginia Commonwealth University; Wake Forest University; Washington University in St. Louis; Xavier University; and Yale University.

STRATEGIC PROGRAM INITIATIVES

In partnership with the Board of Trustees and school administration, the faculty and staff have continued to advance several key program initiatives from the Strategic Plan of 2019. In this, year five of our five-year plan, we have enhanced several key programs:

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)

Seven Hills has made substantial new investments in STEM, to sustain our Lower Schools’ innovative math and science programs, fund the school’s six makerspaces (Doherty’s Science Lab, Lotspeich’s Project Math program, the Middle School’s Innovation Lab, and the Upper School’s three new engineering and robotics labs), and support a vast array of elective courses in science, mathematics, computer science, engineering, and robotics.

Mental Health and Learning Support

Seven Hills is proud to serve students with a wide array of learning styles, and like schools around the nation, we have also seen a significant rise in students struggling with mental health challenges. To address these challenges, Seven Hills has added guidance counselors and learning specialists and allocated new funds for faculty training in how to differentiate learning to meet the needs of a wide variety of learners.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Consistent with our commitment to providing a warm, inclusive school community, the school has provided additional resources for professional training in culturally responsive pedagogies and increased support for student leadership training, affinity groups, and community-building events.

Experiential Learning

Each year, Seven Hills makes an extraordinary commitment to off-campus, experiential learning, including a myriad of grade-level field trips in the lower grades, overnight trips in grades four through nine, and extensive travel experiences in Middle and Upper School associated with classes in theater, music, art, world language, and science — as well as the May Terms and service learning and Civic Engagement trips. Recent budgets have addressed the rapidly escalating costs of these valuable experiences which guide students beyond their comfort zones, help them develop responsibility and self-confidence, and foster closer ties with their classmates and their teachers.

Fine and Performing Arts

In an era when many schools have throttled back on the arts, Seven Hills has doubled down, providing, from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, a rich array of required courses as well as a multitude of optional performance opportunities. The arts department mounts over 20 major productions each year, culminating in Arts Alive, a school-wide celebration of the arts which showcases the talents of our students in all four divisions.

Athletics

Consistent with our commitment to no-cut athletics, Seven Hills fields 106 athletic teams, in 15 sports, involving 70 coaches. The new budget helps sustain this wide array of offerings, including an expanded Middle and Upper squash program and expanded team options in our Lower Schools. In 2023-24, Seven Hills expanded its Middle and Upper School squash program and built out the Lower School program, by adding several new team options as well as some intramural programs in kindergarten. In another banner year, our varsity athletes won six Miami Valley Conference Championships (with seven Coaches and eight Players of the Year) and four sectional team championships. In addition, 15 athletes qualified for state competitions.

In short, with your help, our superb faculty and staff have continued to enhance Seven Hills’ uniquely warm and inclusive community, one that inspires our students to reach their full potential, as learners and as people.

Thank you for the important role you have played in helping Seven Hills fulfill its mission, preparing these remarkable young people for lives of meaning and purpose. You are a huge part of all we have achieved!

Warmly,

CHRIS GARTEN

CHRISTOPHER P. GARTEN Former Head of School

LAIR KENNEDY

Dear Seven Hills Families and Friends,

This past year, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1974 merger that engendered The Seven Hills School as well as the rich traditions of Miss Doherty’s College Preparatory School, Mrs. Lotspeich’s Open-Air School, and Miss Titcomb’s Hillsdale School. At ceremonies throughout the year, we recognized the impact of several generations of school leaders who have helped sustain this legacy of excellence since 1906.

After my first year as Board chair, I am delighted to report that Seven Hills remains in great shape, well positioned to fulfill our ambitious mission in the decades ahead.

Robust Enrollment

In a competitive school market, demand for Seven Hills remains very strong. We opened the 2023-24 school year with an enrollment of 1,044 students, including 148 new students, and a remarkably high retention rate of 94%. The school remains a diverse and vibrant learning community with students of color making up over 40% of our population. We are proud that Seven Hills is one of the most diverse independent schools in the Midwest, serving families from a wide array of cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Strong Financial Position

Seven Hills remains in an enviably strong financial position: with no long-term debt, an endowment of $46 million, and ample cash reserves to protect against possible headwinds. This has made it possible to make significant investments in innovative educational programs and compensation, enabling the school to attract and retain its talented faculty and staff, even in the context of a national teacher shortage.

Facilities Enhancements

Over the last nine years, Seven Hills has made a substantial investment in modernizing its facilities, adding over 100,000 square feet of new space that has transformed teaching and learning on both our campuses.

To build on this momentum, we made significant improvements to our campus security system, installing a state-of-the-art network, linking more than 90 cameras and 200 cellphones, to provide real-time information to school personnel and first responders in the event of an emergency. At Doherty, we renovated (and relocated) the art, drama, and music classrooms and refurbished Jones Hall with new furnishings, paint, and flooring. On the Hillsdale Campus, we completed extensive renovations of the Lotspeich classroom building and built a four-court squash center on the lower level of the Stoehr Gym to house the school’s fastest growing athletic program.

Plotting Seven Hills’ Future

Over the last five years, the Board, administration, faculty, and staff have worked together on key initiatives of the Strategic Plan of 2019. So, as part of our on-going commitment to “being the best at getting better,” the Board launched the next round of strategic planning. Former Board Chair Steve Baggott and current Board Treasurer Angie Apple convened a Strategic Planning Task Force comprised of 18 current and former trustees and community leaders.

This strong group identified eight strategic pillars that will be the foundation for a new strategic plan, including school identity; academic excellence; health and wellness; athletics; diversity, equity, and inclusion; faculty excellence; facilities and campus planning; and financial sustainability. During the 2024-25 school year, the school’s leadership team will work with stakeholder focus groups to develop and fine-tune action plans in each of these key areas, and the Board will adopt a new strategic plan in May 2025.

Leadership Transitions

This spring, we recognized the contributions of two retiring school leaders, Assistant Head of School Susan Marrs and Head of School Chris Garten, who together have given 67 years of exemplary service to Seven Hills. After a global search, the Board appointed Head of Upper School Matt Bolton to succeed Chris Garten as Head of School, effective July 2024. Beyond his strong experience as a talented educator, skilled administrator, and thoughtful leader, Matt brings to his new role a deep understanding of and affection for the Seven Hills community. Succeeding Matt as Head of Upper School is Rick Tate, who comes to us from Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio, one of the strongest independent schools in the Midwest, where he served as assistant director of the Upper School for teaching and learning. We are fortunate to have secured strong leaders to help carry on the school’s tradition of excellence.

Finally, on behalf of our Board of Trustees, I want to express our abiding gratitude for all you have done to support this school. Your help has been a critical part of sustaining an institution that, in the words of our mission statement, “engages hearts and minds, guiding students to cultivate their unique capacities and preparing each for a meaningful role in a rapidly changing world.” We can all be proud of how far this school has come!

Sincerely,

DAYS

174 DAYS IN 2023-24

WE BUILT ON TO THE LASTING LEGACY OF THE SEVEN HILLS COMMUNITY EVERY DAY WE SPENT WITHIN THE SEVEN HILLS COMMUNITY, WE STRIVED TO NEW HEIGHTS IN ACADEMICS, ARTS, AND ATHLETICS. WE RECEIVED AWARDS, BROKE SCHOOL RECORDS, AND SHOWCASED OUR TALENTS. ALUMNI FROM THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY RETURNED TO CELEBRATE THE MERGER 50 YEARS AGO THAT CREATED THE SEVEN HILLS SCHOOL.

nd we bid farewell to two pillars of the Seven Hills community as former Head of School Chris Garten and former Assistant Head of School and Director of College Counseling Susan Marrs retired.

We shared knowledge within our community as older students helped younger ones learn the basics of coding and how to stay safe during April’s solar eclipse. We honored the bravery of students of all ages, who submitted their work to contests, wrote and performed their own plays, and took the stage in front of full-houses in The Schiff Center.

We grew the culture of sports, student-led initiatives, and community fundraising with the opening of the Wyant Family Squash Center, giving Seven Hills the largest squash facility of any school in the Cincinnati area and allowing squash to continue to flourish for all student-athletes who wish to play.

We supported our communities outside of campus, displaying our commitment to the Seven Hills values. Upper Schoolers dived into community service, by building beds during May Term, collecting supplies for those in need, and holding fundraisers throughout the year. Doherty students supported various causes with their Hive community service

projects, and Lotspeich students held a food drive over the holiday season. Middle Schoolers raised more than $20,000 during the annual Walk-A-Thon.

A sense of community flourished across divisions thanks to the dedication of Seven Hills students, teachers, faculty, parents, friends, and alumni. Doherty lifers from the Class of 2024 returned to cheer on pre-kindergartners as they ran the Mini Pig. Upper Schoolers shared their Challenge Experience with Middle Schoolers on their visit days. Middle Schoolers led Lower Schoolers through activities at the STEAM Fair. The entire community gathered for Homecoming and filled the Field House with cheers and well wishes during the Senior Circle.

As these events and accomplishments unfolded throughout the 174 days of the 2023-24 school year, all members of our community encouraged and supported each other and celebrated our strength and friendship.

In the stories found throughout the Annual Report, we invite you to reflect with us and reminisce on some of the highlights of the rewarding, celebratory, and communitydriven 2023-24 school year.

Financial Report 2023-24

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.

The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.

The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee whose duties include engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.

The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.

Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking studentfaculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs.

The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology.

Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

The Seven Hills School points with pride to the latest endowment report that places our invested assets just under $46 million. The infusion of new gifts combined with professional portfolio management, and thoughtful leadership by the school’s Investment Committee, chaired in 2023-24 by Nolan Bean, continues to produce desirable returns.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

EACH YEAR, OUR STUDENTS AND FACULTY HAVE SHOWN AND ACHIEVED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. WE HAVE SHARED OUR KNOWLEDGE WITH OUR FELLOW STUDENTS, RECEIVED AWARDS FOR WRITTEN WORK, AND HEADED OFF TO GREAT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. HERE IS A GLIMPSE OF WHAT WE ACHIEVED IN THE 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR .

LEARNING TOGE THER: STUDENTS AS TEACHERS

Throughout the year, Seven Hills students stepped into the shoes of their teachers to educate other students.

In November and December, Upper School computer science students taught Doherty and Lotspeich students the basics of coding. The students attempted to “code” a robot, played by one of the Upper Schoolers as Upper School computer science teacher Marcus Twyford explained the importance of specific, small instructions when coding. The students then completed games and activities as part of the Hour of Code, a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science and broaden participation in the field.

In science teacher Kristin Suer’s class, seventh graders shared their knowledge of the stars and space. The students researched the solar system and wrote and designed books on their chosen planet. The project culminated with the seventh graders reading the books to kindergartners and first graders at Doherty and Lotspeich.

In April, seventh graders learned about the upcoming solar eclipse and created a skit, answering questions about the eclipse and teaching about safe eclipse viewing. On the days before the eclipse on April 8, the students performed the skit for Doherty and Lotspeich students.

Upper School students learned about the dedication and hard work it takes to complete a Challenge Experience from their peers with sharing days throughout the year. The halls and classrooms of the Upper School were filled with students explaining their projects which included learning CPR, coding apps, completing building projects, and writing cookbooks.

Throughout the school year, students of all ages helped their peers learn about different cultures and holidays, from a pre-kindergartner sharing how she celebrates Lunar New Year with her family to the Upper Equity Council holding multiple lunch and learns.

LEARNING TO BE COURAGEOUS THROUGH WRITING

The Regional Scholastic Writing Awards recognized 116 Middle and Upper School students with 204 awards for their work across various writing categories, including poetry, critical essay, flash fiction, short story, and personal essay. The Scholastic Writing Competition is the oldest and largest student writing competition in the country and Chair of the Upper School English Department Mark Beyreis commended all the students who participated.

“The strong results are proof Seven Hills has a culture that inspires courageous writers. They say public speaking is terrifying but at least speech ends. Your writing is out there forever. It takes even more guts to upload something you have written for others to read,” Beyreis said.

Member of the Class of 2024 Gabrielle Walker and sophomore Will Stock, then a freshman, were named American Voices Award nominees, which are given to the top five submissions across all categories.

THROUGH LEARNING

Seven Hills students, including two Middle Schoolers, won 27 Gold Keys, which entered them into consideration for the national awards, across all categories. Ten of the awards, all for poetry, were earned by five Middle School students.

“I am so proud of my eighth graders for having the courage to share their poetry and very pleased that the judges recognized their talent. We have an incredible pool of talented writers in the Middle School,” said Middle School English teacher Laura Clemens.

174 DAYS

STUDENTS STRENGTHEN THEIR CRAFT THROUGH COLLABORATION AND ENGAGING THEIR COMMUNITY. FROM THE FIRST NOTE PLAYED DURING FALL REHEARSALS TO THE FINAL BOW IN THE SPRING, OUR FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT HAS UPHELD ITS DEDICATION TO EXCELLENCE, LEARNING, CREATING, AND PERFORMING TOGETHER, AND ENCHANTING THE SEVEN HILLS SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

ARTS ALIVE

The third annual Seven Hills Arts Alive, a fine and performing arts festival, showcased Lower, Middle, and Upper School students’ passion for the arts through a variety of incredible performances. On April 26, 2024, students displayed their skills with comedic and dramatic monologues, musical numbers, dance routines, and more in the Donovan Art Center’s Black Box theater, The Schiff Center auditorium, the deck, and the Lotspeich courtyard. Students’ artwork was also on display in the Donovan Arts Center and The Schiff Center lobbies.

OUTSIDE THE HIVE

Our students regularly showcase their talents, academic achievements, dedication to service, and strong character beyond Seven Hills, earning distinguished honors for their efforts. Sophomore Meghan Sheerin-Day won the Greater Cincinnati Earth Day Coalition’s Cincinnati Earth Day logo contest. Class of 2024 graduate Gabrielle Walker was named the 2023-24 Youth Poet Laureate of Cincinnati.

Sophomore Beckett Ceron (then a freshman) was selected to be a 2023 NPR “From the Top” Fellow and was featured on a “From the Top” show that was recorded in Cincinnati in September 2023. For the Overture Awards, Class of 2024 graduate Evelyn Gao and senior Kavan Vadivelu (then a junior) were named semifinalists, and senior Keliang Yao (then a junior) was named a finalist.

UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS AS PLAYWRIGHT AND DIRECTOR

Class of 2024 graduates Mikul Wyer and Susie Stahl were the respective playwright and director for the Upper School’s February 2024 winter production, “Just a Bunch of Stars.” Wyer set the play in a New York City speakeasy and explored the depth of human relationships and their complexity through his script. Stahl directed a talented ensemble cast

and captured the heart of Wyer’s writing.

“One of the things I learned from this experience is that you have to treat everything you write as a learning experience,” Wyer said. “You can learn something about yourself, the people around you, about everything you produce. I also think, especially with playwriting since 90% of it is other people, you have to trust the process. The story is constantly evolving and moving.”

LOWER SCHOOL EXPERIENCES THE ARTS

During the annual Bonnie Binkley Assembly in May 2024, Lotspeich welcomed the Cultural Centre of India in Cincinnati to Seven Hills through the Cincinnati Arts Association’s Artists on Tour program. Using dance, hand language, and a wealth of visual aids, the Cultural Centre of India representative engaged students in an energetic educational experience. The Bonnie Binkley Assembly is held in honor of Bonnie Binkley, a beloved former Lotspeich French teacher. She was known for creating activities that immersed students in the French language and culture.

Doherty celebrated International Dot Day in September 2023. Stemming from author Peter Reynold’s children’s book, “The Dot,” about creativity in the classroom, the students were encouraged to make dots and leave their mark on the world, said Unit II teacher Sherri Linville. First through fifth grade students did a series of dot activities, like decorating dots and translating Morse code, in their classrooms and in the library with librarian Jo Schnirring and art teacher Kacey Watkins. Doherty’s Dot Day activities were featured on Scholastic’s Instagram story during September 2023.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

THE 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR MARKED THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MERGER BETWEEN THE HILLSDALE-LOTSPEICH SCHOOL AND THE COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL (CPS) THAT CREATED THE SEVEN HILLS SCHOOL. EVENTS WERE HELD THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, INCLUDING THE ALUMNI SPEAKER SERIES AND MULTIPLE CELEBRATIONS. LOTSPEICH STUDENTS FOCUSED THEIR DESIGN THINKING CHALLENGE AROUND THE SCHOOL’S HISTORY AND THE WEBSITE 50TH.7HILLS.ORG LAUNCHED TO HONOR THE MOMENTOUS OCCASION.

50 TH.7HILLS.ORG

50th.7hills.org collected oral histories from more than 30 Seven Hills students, teachers, staff, alumni, parents, and administrators to represent every aspect of the essence and meaning of Seven Hills, documenting how it has changed over the last 50 years.

Then Assistant Head of School and Director of College

Counseling Susan Marrs wrote the website’s introduction, sharing her wisdom and memories of the last 50 years.

“Seven Hills continues to be a place where learning flowers in an engaging, relationship-based atmosphere, and where students are encouraged to challenge themselves and discover new talents and skills. The pace of life and the pressures on young people have increased exponentially in these 50 years, but growing up still feels a little easier here at Seven Hills, where our students continue to be surrounded by peers and teachers and families who love and support them,” wrote Marrs, who began at CPS in 1971 as a part-time English teacher and retired at the end of the 2023-24 school year.

“50” COMMEMORATIVE PHOTO

During the first week of the 2023-24 school year, the Upper Schoolers gathered on the field to form a “50” for a commemorative photo.

HOMECOMING KICKOFF EVENT

A series of events for alumni kicked off during Homecoming in September as alumni and their families gathered during the varsity soccer games on the Hillsdale Campus to cheer on the Stingers, enjoy food, and take part in festive activities.

LOTSPEICH’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY DESI GN THINKING CHALLENGE

In early October 2023, Lotspeich fifth graders interviewed several notable figures from the school's history as part of a design thinking challenge centered around the 50th Anniversary.

The prompt for the challenge was "design a way for Lotspeich students to celebrate Seven Hills' 50th anniversary in a way that is fun, educational, and builds community."

Students first learned about the 1974 merger from then Head of School Chris Garten, who provided a wonderfully detailed account of our school's history beginning with Doherty’s founding in 1906.

After understanding why the two schools merged, fifth graders met former faculty and students, such as former Head of Lotspeich Carolyn Fox, former Head of Doherty Patti Guethlein, former librarian Marcia Snyder, Christopher Knoop L'53, and many more. Lively chatter and warm retellings filled the fifth grade classrooms as the visitors recounted some of their favorite memories.

Later on, students used the information to design a variety of projects for the challenge, such as trivia contests, games, and a puppet show.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

ALUMNI SPEAKER SERIES

Alumni continued to share their memories and life and career experience with current students through the Upper School’s Alumni Speaker Series, which launched in honor of the 50th anniversary and brought seven alumni back to campus.

Marsha Williams ’77, Peter Wojda ’06, Frank Cohen’91, Katherine Zoepf ’96, Deborah Garcia H’67, Emily Wiedemann ’01, and Hannah Bloch ’80 visited classes and clubs related to their careers and addressed students at an allschool assembly.

The alumni shared memories of their time at Seven Hills and how it shaped their future careers. One of Williams’ earliest experiences of realizing the joy of volunteering was during an Earth Day litter pickup when she was a CPS student. Zoepf thanked her Lotspeich teachers for encouraging her second-grade dream to became a writer.

All the alumni told the Upper Schoolers to follow their passions, trust what they have learned during their time at Seven Hills, and not be afraid of the future.

“Passions change as you grow. You just have to get started,” Wiedemann told the students.

“Don’t wait around for the perfect opportunity or for some lightning bolt from above to tell you what you should be doing. Try something, and see if you like it. You don’t need to have a grand master plan, you just need to make some smaller, hopefully thoughtful, choices. Try different things, stay busy.”

50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The year of events capped off with a bang.

On April 13, hundreds of Seven Hills families and friends gathered in the Field House on the Hillsdale Campus for the 50th Anniversary Celebration. Attendees relished in reuniting and reminiscing while enjoying incredible food from Eat Well, live music by Soul Pocket, and student performances. They were also able to journey through the history of Seven Hills since the merger in 1974 to the modern day with a timeline, displaying highlights from the schools’ history.

Juniors Noah Ring and Lily Plum Gartenlaub sang a song from “Mamma Mia!” and freshman Sahana Siddharth performed “Waving Through a Window” from “Dear Evan Hansen.”

Marrs, Garten, and Board of Trustees Chair Lair Kennedy relayed their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the attendees’ efforts over the years that helped make the school the beloved institution it is today.

“We are celebrating a school that in many ways is remarkably different,” Garten said. “As much as this school has changed over the years, at its core this school is still the same as many of you in this room experienced. We are trying to provide a life changing experience for students that is still shaped by a talented faculty and staff, a lively and engaging curriculum, and a comprehensive program full of arts and athletics and all types of ways for students to test themselves.”

Here’s to another wonderful 50 years!

Parents of Alumni Donors

The generosity of the parents of our alumni fills Seven Hills with gratitude. Their ongoing support beyond their children’s graduation, stands as apowerful testament to their confidence in, and the lasting value of, the Seven Hills experience. We take immense pride in recognizing and thanking these devoted parents for their loyalty and philanthropy to the Annual Fund.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

IN RECENT YEARS, THE SPORT OF SQUASH HAS BECOME A CHERISHED PART OF THE SEVEN HILLS COMMUNITY. THANKS TO GENEROUS DONORS, SEVEN HILLS OPENED THE LARGEST SQUASH FACILITY FOR A HIGH SCHOOL IN THE CINCINNATI AREA IN MARCH 2024.

The Wyant Family Squash Center — named for long-time Seven Hills community members and donors Peg (Hogan H'60) and Jack Wyant along with their children Jack Wyant '92, Missy Wyant Smit '94, Tim Wyant '96, and Chris Wyant '01 — opened in Stoehr Gym on the Hillsdale Campus.

The new facility goes beyond giving the six Middle and Upper School squash teams a home court. Athletic Director Scott Willard hopes it helps grow squash throughout the Cincinnati area.

“There are great partnerships, and there is great squash in Cincinnati. Our goal here is to champion the effort to grow squash in the area and have more people play in town. We also hope to set a standard in the area for squash programs,” Willard said.

Former Head of School Chris Garten echoed Willard’s statement, adding squash has been incorporated into the Seven Hills physical education curriculum.

“Opening these courts allows us to launch our own fullfledged squash program. We really want to provide an opportunity to introduce the game to all our students. Our hope is to spark an interest in a game our students can play throughout their adult lives and have them be part of a community,” Garten said.

Garten added the facility will be a way for Seven Hills to partner with other schools and organizations looking to grow squash in Cincinnati for all young people.

The decision for Seven Hills to offer squash as a winter sport came from the Seven Hills community.

“This idea came from a student, it was student-led. That is what this school is all about. Students here do a ton of great things,” Willard said.

The Upper School first offered squash as a girls winter sport during the 2021-22 school year. The program added a boys team during the 2022-23 season and expanded into the Middle School for the 2023-24 season.

Both the girls and boys varsity teams competed at the U.S. High School Squash Championships in Philadelphia in February 2024. Thanks to Seven Hills’ no-cut athletic programs, there were six squash teams across the Middle and Upper School for the 2023-24 winter sports season.

For member of the Class of 2024 and squash team captain Aanvi Anand, the support from the community made her dream of having a squash team a reality.

“It’s been really exciting to have a team in high school and continue to play in college. Thank you to everyone who donated; without you, this would really not have been possible. It was a dream my freshman year for me and my sister, Aanya, who helped make it happen along with Mr. Willard. So, thank you for helping her and thank you for helping us,” Anand said at the dedication.

Though offering squash is new for Seven Hills, the sport has a long history of being popular within the community. To honor that, the Wyant Family Squash Center includes a Collegiate Wall with the names of more than 20 Seven Hills alums who went on to play squash in college before Seven Hills offered it as a sport.

THROUGH ATHLETICS

FIVE STINGERS SIGN TO PLAY IN COLLEGE

Five Stingers from the Class of 2024 signed their letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college at Signing Day on April 10.

“This is the accumulation of a lot of hard work, dedication, guidance, coaching, and the tremendous amount of support from the athletes’ families to make this day a reality. This is, without question, an incredible accomplishment,” Athletic Director Scott Willard said during a ceremony in Kalnow Gym.

Aanvi Anand will be playing squash at Middlebury College. Eli Cogan will be playing soccer at Swarthmore College. Lauren Coulson will be playing volleyball at Roger Williams University. Avi Mahajan will be playing tennis at Washington University in St. Louis. Maggie Motch will be playing squash at Colby College.

Congrats, Stingers!

BUILDING COMMUNITY

THROUGH VARIOUS INITIATIVES AND PROJECTS, STUDENTS ACROSS ALL GRADE LEVELS ENGAGED IN ACTS OF SERVICE AND GENEROSITY, SHOWCASING THEIR COLLECTIVE DEDICATION TO POSITIVELY AFFECTING THE WORLD AROUND THEM. BUILDING BEDS FOR LOCAL CHILDREN, BAKING DOG BISCUITS FOR ANIMAL SHELTERS, RAISING MONEY THROUGH A WALK-A-THON, AND COLLECTING DONATIONS FOR THANKSGIVING MEALS ARE ONLY A FEW OF THE INITIATIVES OUR STUDENTS COMPLETED DURING THE 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR.

UPPER

On May 24 and May 28-31, the Upper School freshmen, sophomores, and juniors completed one of 17 May Terms, a week-long course or trip focusing on a specific topic. The “Give, Grow, and Be Great” May Term focused on service learning. They spent part of their time working with the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace to personally build 17 beds for children in Warren and Clermont Counties in Ohio. Additionally, the Upper School Service Club and “Give, Grow, and Be Great” students held two bake sales to raise funds for bedding. On behalf of the “Give, Grow, and Be Great” May Term, Director of Experiential Learning Karen Glum also requested donations and new bedding for the nonprofit via The Blast, a weekly parent newsletter. Through their combined efforts, they raised enough money to build 25 beds and collected 25 sets of bedding.

MIDDLE

Throughout six afternoons and thousands of laps later, sixth through eighth grade students walked, ran, jogged, and even skipped around the upper field track for the fourth annual Middle School Walk-A-Thon and collectively raised $20,771.65. The money was divided between The Caring Place, a local organization that provides services to Cincinnati neighborhoods, and Leja Bulela, a nonprofit that provides humanitarian relief to people in the KasaiOriental Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DOHERTY

Doherty students supported various causes, from building birdhouses to baking dog treats for a local shelter to raising money to sponsor animals at the Cincinnati Zoo,

through collaboration with their Hive members. The Hives are multiage buddy groups with students in kindergarten through fifth grade and began during the 2022-23 school year. Head of Doherty Tracy Murch said the Hives provide students of all ages the opportunity to mentor their peers, provide leadership, and a chance to engage their peers across grade levels. During the 2023-24 school year, each Hive selected a community service project to focus on that year.

LOTSPEICH

Lotspeich students teamed up with the Upper School Service Club during fall 2023 to support those in need. Students focused their efforts on collecting an array of festive and comforting food items namely canned yams, mini marshmallows, and hot chocolate. Their contributions to the Madisonville Educational & Assistance Center aimed to bring warmth and joy to the community, ensuring that more families could enjoy a special Thanksgiving meal.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

FROM SENIORS CHEERING ON DOHERTY MINI PIG RUNNERS TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS LEADING SCIENCE STATIONS AT THE LOWER SCHOOL STEAM FAIR TO UPPER SCHOOLERS WELCOMING EIGHTH GRADERS INTO THE UPPER SCHOOL DURING PREVIEW DAYS, OPPORTUNITIES TO MENTOR AND CONNECT ACROSS GRADE LEVELS AND DIVISIONS ABOUND AT SEVEN HILLS. BELOW ARE A FEW OF THE COUNTLESS EVENTS, MOMENTS, AND CELEBRATIONS THAT STRENGTHENED OUR STUDENTS’ CROSS-DIVISIONAL RELATIONSHIPS.

YOUTH SPIRIT NIGHTS

At Youth Spirit Nights, during select Upper School games throughout the year, Lower and Middle School athletes are highlighted at half-time to honor their hard work and dedication to their respective sports. The younger athletes are high-fived and cheered on as they run through a tunnel of the varsity players and coaches.

The enthusiasm of the Spirit Nights exemplifies the joy found across the Seven Hills student body. Empowered by their community, students explore their future and celebrate their past while nurturing new and existing friendships across divisions.

UPPER SCHOOL PREVIEW DAYS

In November 2023, the eighth grade previewed life at the Upper School for two days. Then Head of Upper School

Matt Bolton welcomed students in The Schiff Center and discussed class requirements, the college counseling process, athletic offerings, Challenge Experiences, and community service hours. The eighth graders attended Upper School classes, met their future classmates, and found Upper School clubs that sparked their passions. To show their support for the incoming freshmen, the Upper Schoolers hosted an ice cream social in the Hillsdale Commons to share their experiences and answer questions about life at the Upper School. The eighth graders finished each day by attending Challenge Experience sharing presentations.

After the preview days, eighth graders anticipated opening the next chapter of their academic adventure at Seven Hills.

THE TURKEY TANGO

Later that month, the Class of 2024 and Lotspeich second graders ushered in the winter holiday season, kicking off Thanksgiving Break with the Turkey Tango, a beloved tradition during the Lotspeich and Upper School assembly.

Family and friends cheered as the second graders began the dance alone before the older students joined.

Older students at Seven Hills may serve as dance partners, role models, mentors, and perhaps their favorite responsibility, enthusiastic teachers to the younger students. Countless opportunities throughout the year present older students the chance to teach their younger peers about topics they’re passionate about. This enables younger students to learn about subjects in creative ways and reinforces the older students’ knowledge of the subjects.

174 DAYS

BUILDING COMMUNITY

LEARNING THROUGH TEACHING

At the beginning of the winter semester, Lower School students learned the basics of coding from Upper School computer science students. The Upper Schoolers acted out the instructions from the Lower Schoolers as they tried to “code” a robot, played by an Upper Schooler, to make a sandwich, demonstrating the importance of writing specific, small instructions. After the presentation, the Upper School students helped the Lower School students complete games and activities as part of the Hour of Code, a worldwide event to celebrate computer science and broaden participation in the field.

During the Lower School STEAM Fair, Lower School students immersed themselves in various science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities and games at stations throughout the Middle School. Seventh and eighth graders played a crucial role in leading each station and explaining its mechanics to the eager STEAM explorers.

MINI PIG MARATHON ON DOHERTY CAMPUS

On the Friday of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon Weekend, the Doherty pre-kindergarten students raced for two laps around the soccer field as they were cheered on by their classmates, parents, and teachers. Sixteen members of the Class of 2024, who attended Doherty, returned to cheer on the runners, hand out water, and run a lap themselves.

ALL-SCHOOL SEND-OFF TO SENIORS

To round out an amazing school year, the entire Seven Hills community gathered in the Field House to cheer off the Class of 2024. With signs, air-horns, cowbells, and our beloved mascot Sting, Stingers of all ages rallied for the senior class as they ran around the circle and thanked their parents and teachers for an excellent final year.

It was a year enriched by connections bridging across divisions, as students embodied the Seven Hills values.

Students celebrating one another’s victories creates lasting connections. From a Middle Schooler praising a Lower Schooler who grasped Archimedes principle on buoyancy, to Upper School athletes rooting for the Lower and Middle School teams, to Upper Schoolers returning to Doherty to cheer on the pre-k Mini Pig runners, students excel at honoring their peers’ efforts and achievements.
