CREATING A CREATIVE TOWN So here we are, hurtling towards another sensational summer in the sunny seaside town of Bangor. We’ve brought together more than a hundred handpicked Festival events, in forty special places throughout the town and beyond, from the first to the thirty first of August. Our carefully curated programme has household names, Festival favourites and local heroes rubbing shoulders with the experimental, the eclectic and the downright divergent. There’ll be music, comedy, film, theatre and food, alongside readings, lectures, exhibitions, magic and mystery. In pubs, parks, pop-up venues, small boats and old buildings… not to mention an island, a courthouse, courtyards and the British Legion. Creative partners from across the local arts and business communities have helped develop this year’s programme, embracing the idea of Bangor as a creative town. With its natural assets, geographical location and creative underbelly, Bangor could be the Brighton of the North, or our own mini Edinburgh. The Festival is just a taste of what we can achieve together. So let’s have some serious fun this August.

The Festival is a true success story and, through its inclusive programme of culture and arts, plays a key role in helping to invigorate the town by increasing cultural tourism and by engaging and celebrating local businesses. The Festival’s long term vision dovetails perfectly with the broader aims of the Borough Council in making Bangor a better place to live, work and visit. This year’s programme features a huge range of activities including many free and all-ages events. We look forward to August – now Festival month in Bangor – and hope you and your friends and family will support the Festival and enjoy all that Bangor has to offer. Christine Mahon, Director of Regeneration, Development and Planning

You may have caught them during our spring 2015 Festival tour with John Smith. The all-female Prima String Quartet stretch boundaries with their brave, progressive arrangements. Collaborations include Lady

Gaga, Pink and Belle and Sebastian. They feature on the new Ports album but rarely get the chance to play with them live. The 70-strong Open House Festival Choir, lead by Katie Richardson, has been a singing phenomenon and a shot in the arm for the creative life of Bangor. Their version of 'The Few and Far Between' by Ports, during their sell-out Black Box gig, was breathtaking and started a love affair between the band and the choir. This collaboration between choir, quartet and band will be a one-off Festival special. And very special it will be too.

Sam Beam is the illusive, charismatic and bearded singer-songwriter from South Carolina, whose musical adventures go under the moniker of Iron and Wine. Despite performing for more than a decade, achieving cult status among indie-folk enthusiasts, he has made only one previous appearance in Northern Ireland – at the Open House Festival back in 2010. His acclaimed new recording, a duets album called Love Letter for Fire, is co-written and recorded with another Open House favourite, American singer-songwriter (now Manchester adoptee) Jesca Hoop. “PEOPLE GO ON ABOUT SEEING THE SEX PISTOLS LIVE. HE WAS MY SEX PISTOLS.”

In 1971, comedians on the working men’s club circuit didn’t know what was about to hit them: a 19 year-old Marxist art student. Through the next decade, Alexei Sayle would be a clerk in a DHSS office, one of London’s bottom ten freelance illustrators, a school dinner lady, and a college lecturer, before becoming the original MC of London’s first modern comedy club, The Comedy Store – when the landscape of British comedy was altered forever. Alexei will read from and talk about his recent book, Thatcher Stole My Trousers, which chronicles a time when comedy and politics came together in electrifying ways. Recounting the opening season of the Comedy Store, Alexei’s experiences with Alternative Cabaret, The Comic Strip and The Young Ones, and his friendships with the comedians who, like him, would soon become household names, this event will be a unique and beguiling blend of social history and memoir.

The late Alan Rickman stars in this 2008 comedy-drama, based on the true story of the now infamous blind Paris Wine Tasting of ’76, which put Napa wines on the map for good. He plays a maverick English wine merchant who takes on the French wine aristocracy with the little-known New

World Californians. But could the French possibly succumb to the wine making talents of the lowly pretenders from the Napa Valley? Before the film, Bangor wine expert and raconteur, Craig Walker, will recreate this famous event with a tasting of two French wines versus two from California. This time around, which wine wins is up to you. Price includes a glass of fizz on arrival, tasting of four selected wines, plus cheese and crackers. Feel free to bring your own wine (from any region you like) and nibbles to enjoy during the film.

The Third Man is a stylish film noir, celebrated for its acting, musical score and atmospheric cinematography. It is considered one of the greatest films of all time, and was voted best British film of the 20th century. Joseph Cotton stars as pulp novelist, Holly Martins, who travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of his old friend, Harry Lime, played by Orson Welles. This is a must-see for any cinema aficionados; the setting of Bangor’s former Courtroom will no doubt add intensity to this compelling thriller.

He has combined a childhood fascination with his academic interests to create the remarkable set of skills that he is famous for today. Following on from his sell out 2015 tour, David continues to amaze and confound as he reveals private PIN numbers, detects lies, reveals secret thoughts, and influences those around him with seemingly inexplicable, and often hilarious, results! F u ll b a r On July 31st 1920, a body was found lying on the rocks at the Girls Home, Bangor: Dr WJ Crawford, Emeritus Professor at Queen’s University, had taken more cyanide than was good for him. But what had brought him to that point? This is a true and fascinating story of spiritualism, fraud and obsession, that

involves three of Edwardian Ireland’s most-adventurous scientists, an unverified number of spirits, and one precocious young woman: 16 year old Kathleen Goligher. In this illustrated lecture, Reggie Chamberlain-King, the author of Weird Belfast and Weird Dublin (Blackstaff Press), leads you through the professor’s experiments and psyche to the Threshold of the Unseen. A darkly entertaining and fascinating story.

COLIN MIDDLETON THE BANGOR YEARS THE G U I L L E MO T KITC H EN CA FÉ W e dn e sday 17 August, 7.30pm £ 1 5 , o pe n h ousefestival . com Fu l ly se ated Bangor was a sometimes muse for Colin Middleton, one of the greatest Irish painters of the 20th century, inspiring many of his greatest paintings. A frequent visitor to the town throughout his life, he spent his last decade living in 6 Victoria Road, opposite the harbour. Today, the Guillemot Café overlooks that very house – so where better to host a Festival celebration of the man, his work, and his Bangor Years?

Your host for this special evening is Dickon Hall, an acknowleged and respected Middleton expert. Dickon will reveal the stories behind the artist’s paintings and host a Q&A session. There’ll be a glass or two of wine and some delicious nibbles courtesy of the Guillemot too. There are very restricted numbers for this event, so early booking is recommended. We are very grateful to The Hill Gallery, Bangor, for supporting this event.

There will be pop up musical and spoken word events, such as Andy ‘selling’ bespoke art pieces in exchange for 200 of your hand-written words! Nick Patterson, Sync Space owner, will document the emerging exhibition and creative happenings in video and time lapse photography, which you can check out at syncspace.co.uk Come and join this bunch of creatives while they work. FESTIVAL CHOIR APPE ARI NG T H ROUGHOUT T HE F ESTIVAL Ch ec k w e bsite for details

Open House Festival Choir started as a summer-long musical experiment in 2015, led by the enigmatic and multi-talented artist, Katie Richardson. The choir quickly took on a life of its own, and has grown over the last year into a 70-strong singing phenomenon, performing with Duke Special, Celtic Soul and Gill Landry of Old Crow Medicine Show. They were also the subject of a documentary film which previewed at this year’s Belfast Film Festival. Summer 2016 sees the return of the choir for a new season of weekly singing classes and performances. Places are limited, but please email us if you’re interested in joining the choir at alison@openhousefestival.com
