THE 2013 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI A trio of accomplished professionals in the business, creative and nonprofit worlds are this year’s Pierce College Distinguished Alumni. The awardees were recognized for their professional achievements and community service at a dinner at the Pierce Puyallup campus on April 17. L.Denice Randle, 30, of Lakewood, dreamed of going to a historically black college in the South. Instead, she chose what turned out to be a better path: Attending Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, where she flourished as a student, became president of the Black Student Union and built the foundation for bachelor and master degrees. Today she directs education and employment programs at Making a Difference in Community in Tacoma. “It’s so fulfilling and so rewarding to know that I have been able to directly impact someone’s life and their future because they were able to go to college,” she said. Alan Kropf, 29, of Napa Valley, Calif., is president and founder of Mutineer Magazine, a nationally distributed publication that makes fine beverages approachable to young adults. He’s also a certified
sommelier, and oversaw the wine program at the exclusive Beverly Hills Hotel, where he poured wine for celebrities and politicians, including Hillary Clinton. Kropf was a junior at Rogers High School in Puyallup when he entered the dual-credit Running Start program at Pierce College. At age 17, he became president of the Puyallup campus student association. “There’s no way I could do the stuff that I’m doing today without having the Pierce College student leadership experience under my belt,” Kropf said. The products that Kurt Fletter makes keep roller coasters rolling, help salmon negotiate river dams and, if all goes as planned, will prevent the Tacoma Narrows Bridge from collapsing in an earthquake. Fletter, 48, of West Linn, Ore., is co-owner and founder of Power Plastics Corp. in Portland. The company fabricates gears, sprockets and other industrial components out of high-strength plastic, polymer and composite materials. Fletter, who has dyslexia, credits Pierce College with providing the personal attention he needed to later earn a bachelor’s degree and go into business. “Without Pierce College,” Fletter said, “I’m sure I would not have been able to do a four-year degree.”
2013 DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD-WINNER Chemistry Professor Ted Wood is this year’s winner of the Pierce College Distinguished Faculty award. Pierce College faculty and the Pierce College Federation of Teachers presented Wood with the honor based on his contributions to Pierce College and the community, and his teaching excellence. Wood, 58, of Olympia, has taught at Pierce College since 1989, and serves as coordinator of the chemistry department. His primary teaching assignment is organic chemistry.
“Ted has some really nice evaluations from students, and a lot of really glowing testimonials from his colleagues about how much he has added to Pierce College over the years,” said John Lucas, a political science instructor and federation vice president. Wood has taught at universities, but prefers the community college level. “We’re teachers here, pure and simple.”
