Forward
When Scott first called to request that I write the forward to his Portfolio Book, I encountered a sense of excitement that could hardly be described with a few words in English. Or Chinese. I was utterly speechless when I found out that I was given the chance to write about someone who I highly value and respect: for the person I am to write about is not just a brother, but also someone who has continued to inspire me to explore my creativity and bring my thoughts to life. Not just for myself, but for others to experience as well. Aside from being the most genuine and entertaining person I have encountered, there is a lot to say about Scott. It’s tremendously difficult trying to recall the first day I met Scott, because I was most likely too busy crying and trying to figure out why baby food tasted so unsatisfying. I, however, do remember the day Scott and I secretively made scribbles on the walls in our home. Let it be pencils, pen, or permanent markers, we used whatever we could find that had ink. We did it so often that it seemed as if the world would come to an end if the walls weren’t covered with birds, cows, flowers or the family portrait. The point is that, even before I really learned to speak properly, I watched my brother draw. Throughout the years I observed Scott’s works expand and transform from one form to another: pencil, color pencil, watercolor, oil painting, and finally digital design. Family, friends, instructors, and schools often recognize his outstanding and brilliant works. Not only such recognition distinguishes Scott as someone with original and fascinating ideas, it also identifies him as a diligent learner and creator. However, his intensions aren’t to impress, but to better himself and the works that he creates. For him, thinking and creating are no different than the sun and the moon: together they form an endless cycle that began when he drew the first line on the wall that suffered much of our abuse.
There are only a few people I have known who truly inspire me, and those that I look up to have characteristics that no other can match or compare; this much can be said about Scott. I approached my interest in Writing seriously because he inspired me to do so; and I grew to understand and appreciate Art because he showed and taught me what he knew. Let it be learning from him, examining his creations, or simply being around him, his heart continues to wield a voice that has influenced much of mine: we can better ourselves, and we can certainly make a difference in this world. Looking through his Portfolio Book is much like looking through history. Even to this very moment, I remember the numerous conversations we have had regarding the works he has shared with me. The amount of time he has put into his creations is extraordinary, and the countless stories he has narrated through his pieces devise an unforgettable experience. I hope you will enjoy Scott’s Portfolio Book as much as I have. This book is his story: it is a compilation of places he has gone and places he wishes to go. It, however, doesn’t mark the end of his journey. In fact, it never does. Because in him, I not only see a caring brother and a truthful friend, but I also see Art as it is: with infinite possibilities. - Willis W. Liao

So the journey starts here...

As my fingers dance upon the keyboard that identifies their footsteps, I find it most difficult to define what Design means to me as someone who lives in its mysterious form. When I think of it, words scatter into the air with such silence I could hear the pounding heartbeats that have long lived inside me. It is then I realized that Design is the pounding heartbeats; it is the mysterious identity that has helped me shape the way I am as a human being. It is part of me; it is what makes and represents me when I quietly observe and create the things I like the most. When I was in my junior year, I felt strongly that I still have yet to cross the bridge of becoming a better designer. The expectation that I had for myself was high, and I did not see myself there. Wanting to push myself more, and wanting to cross the bridge truthfully and skillfully, I turned to someone who is both my friend and my mentor: Professor Michelle Lockwood. Standing still in front of Michelle, I said in a definite tone that I am likely to remember forever:
3
“Michelle, I want to be a better designer. I would like to ask you to push me more on my projects. Great, a new hell is raised. Sometimes I wonder why I said what I said, for Michelle stood by my words just as when I stood in front of her. However, I know that whatever difficulty and obstacle I came across in this newborn journey, they are not only necessary, but also essential if I am to reach a higher ground. I am more than glad to say that my dear friend Michelle has not held back at all. Whether I can or cannot define Design is no longer a question, but a matter of emotion and integrity. Design itself defines my experience in Art & Design School studies in its entirety. I walked through the door of Alfred University hoping to become a great Fine Art artist, but I am walking out as a designer: a professionally trained designer. Yes, my friend. Hell has frozen over.

Four years in Art & Design School has helped me greatly in freeing up my artistic concepts. Traveling from traditional sketch art to digital media prints has been a long but satisfying trip; A trip that often takes me out of stressful situations. My theory is that there aren’t any bad prints; every concept can be interesting through the use of different media and materials. I like to break rules in the digital world. Living in confinement is an option not considered. It feels good to be a cowboy sometimes.

As there is a beginning to every story, Drawing is what marks the genesis of my journey with Art and Design. When I close my eyes to think about the things that I have done as a child, I think of the pencil and paper that were placed before me. Since the moment I picked up that pencil, I have been drawing the world that I perceive. Throughout the years of growing up, I learned to deal with my emotional difficulties through the use of lines and shapes; I would draw with every little bit of my strength, until I grew tired and put the pencil to rest. Then there came a day when I walked away from drawing. For four years, I dared not place a mark on the paper because I lost sight of what Drawing meant for me. The magic simply lost its trail, and the romance was nowhere to be found.
69
Four years later, I stared into a blank piece of paper and once again recognized the lines and shapes that set my blood flowing. The 2B graph pencil that I placed between my fingers on that very day, became a gateway to a familiar world. I fell deep into fantasy, and felt that I had powers that others never came across. Without another word or thought, I knew that I could make a difference in this fantasy world. While I still have not yet wakened up from this fantasy, I have found the beauty of reality along the way. Don’t wake me up yet. It’s beautiful where I am.

Momofuku Ando, the inventor of Cup Noodle, once said, “Hunger is the inspiration of creativity.” As I think of it, bringing fantastic ideas to forms have always been a hunger of mine. It is as if it is my natural habit. Even until now, I have not felt fulfilled in my own creations: my mind is constantly hinting at its hunger for inspiration and creation. Certainly, without the support from my family, friends, and mentors, I couldn’t have done half of the work I have accomplished. Their trust and belief in my various projects is the key to my survival and motivations.
I hope after viewing this portfolio book, you will be hungry as well. Hungry, and wanting to bathe yourself in the sauce that makes everything so much more delicious. Thank you for the time you have spent with my portfolio book. But trust me, they are just appetizers. The kitchen is busy, and I can’t wait to bring you more appealing dishes. So in all, I would simply like to ask, “Are you hungry?”
