Somewhat Broken

Next, limitations were lifted and multiple type sizes and weights were introduced. The grid is somewhat broken and the compositions become more active. In order, the last two sprints focused on space and movement. Space was achieved by playing off of the tendency of objects to shrink as they recede into the background. Movement was achieved by bringing the eyes first at the large “mw” and then allowing them to trail off to the left from the “4” to the rest of the text.

Alt Grids & Adjs

The first three utilize alternate grids based on photographs. Represented in order are two dancers, one dancer, and a satellite image of a farm. These provided unexpected results and proved to be more difficult in simultaneously following the grid and making a dynamic composition. The last three represent specific adjectives. In order, they are loud, illegible, and quiet. In producing these sprints, the adjectives seemed to provide a focus for many placement and scale decisions, giving the final piece a distinct voice.

Design Tendencies

In this next series of sprints, the focus was on addressing reoccurring tendencies in the past compositions such as 90 and 45 degree angles, loudness, illegibility, cluttered and clunky. These resulted in utilizing white space, horizontal text, readable paragraphs, and quieter elements. The last six were redesigned sprints that were notably weak and were improved based on experience gained throughout the project.
