Needle size is based on the blade diameter (C). Example (11: Japanese notation, 75: German notation)

Needles that can be used for the TAJIMA machines have shank diameter (A): 1.62 to 1.63 mm, butt to eye length (B): 33.8 to 33.9 mm.

1-2. Standard needle Our standard needles (needles to be equipped to the TAJIMA machine) are the following three types.

Characteristic

It has spherical tip and good durability. It can be used for various purposes such as from thin to thick fabric, knit. It is effective to prevent breakage of thread and needle.

*Denier (d): Larger the value, the thicker is thread.

1-4. Change of needle Needle is consumable. Use of bent needle or tip-damaged needle will cause thread breakage and skip stitch. Change the needle when such troubles are distinguishing. It is also necessary to change needle according to conditions such as thread to use, material, sewing method etc.

- Cross section There should be no gap.

BASICS

4. Thread [Difference between sewing thread and embroidery thread] Sewing thread (three-piece twist) Its purpose is to sew fabric together and needs enough strength. Embroidery thread (two-piece twist) It is frequently used for decoration. It needs softness to emphasize brilliance even if it overlaps.

3-piece twist

2-piece twist

4-1. Upper thread Use left-twisted (Z-twisted) upper thread that fits to rotating direction of rotary hook (counterclockwise).

When catching thread in both hands and turning thread to the direction indicated by arrow, it is “left-twisted” if twisting of thread returns. When thread twisting becomes stronger, it is “right-twisted”.

4-2. Under thread Cotton thread or polyester spun thread is popular (differs depending on application). If you do not use the same thread as upper thread, select thin thread count as much as possible (the back of fabric will be finished softly).

5. Fabric stretching Fix the fabric in the state of full stretch so that no lines remain on the fabric.

Clip

For multi head machine When you attach frame holder or square frame, detach the border frame sash (1).

1

The number of clips and their length differ depending on frame size. Perform equal arrangement by using all clips.

How to fit in clip

Push it down by thumb.

If thread does not pass to each section correctly, it is not possible to make normal stitching (not possible to embroider). In addition, thread breakage sensor will malfunction to stop the machine. (Code Nos.291, 293 etc. will occur). How to use adjusting lever 1. To raise the lever

9

BASICS

7. Tension adjustment of thread To make finishing of embroidery beautiful or to perform efficient works by reducing thread breakage, it is important to get adequate tension of upper/under thread. Please perform adequate tension adjustment that is suitable to fabric or type of thread to use, conditions etc.

7-1. Under thread tension (a) When not using a measuring gauge When you shake the bobbin case (3) up and down lightly in the state of under thread (1 in the figure) not hooked to the thread guide coil (2), standard tension (20 to 35 g) makes the bobbin case (3) descend slowly. [When adjusting] Loosening the adjusting screw (4) will make tension looser. Tightening it will make tension tighter.

1 3

4

2 Use a small flat head screw driver.

(b) When using a measuring gauge Introduced hereunder are gauges to measure tension of upper/under thread. Please make good use of them (sold separately). UTG (Upper/under thread tension measuring gauge)

BTG (Under thread tension measuring gauge)

Used for both jumbo rotary hook and regular rotary hook

BASICS 7-2. Upper thread tension Adjust tension with thread apart from the thread presser 2 (illustration A below).

a. Remove entangling of thread at the first tension (1). It is all

right that only light tension is applied here.

b. Perform adjustment at the second tension (3) while pulling out thread so that tension becomes 100 to 130 g. - Standard value Type of thread

11

BASICS

8. Timing between needle and rotary hook The timing (timing between needle and rotary hook) when the needle (1) meets the hook point (2) of rotary hook is very important. When the needle (1) moves up, the loop (4) generated under the fabric (3) affects finishing of sewing. Loop shape is changed by “Fast”/“Late” timing between needle and rotary hook. The description below only shows the relation between a needle and a rotary hook. This does not mean recommendation of adjustment of timing between needle and rotary hook.

3 4 1

[Timing: 198°]

2

1 Small looping is apt to generate skip stitches. Moving up quantity: small Fast

2

Main shaft angle 200° (standard value)

3 4

Main shaft angle shows timing between needle and rotary hook. Adjustable range: 198 to 204° (standard value: 200°) Main shaft angle

Late

[Timing: 204°]

2 1 Large looping is not apt to generate skip stitches.

Moving up quantity: large

9. Presser foot When height of the presser foot (2) against the fabric (1) is improper, a gap will occur between the fabric (1) and the needle plate (3). That will cause thread breakage, skip stitch, or bad thread tension. It is necessary to adjust height of presser foot according to fabric thickness.

Value at shipment from the factory 0.8 mm

2

Good example Presser foot should press the fabric at needle sticking.

12

BASICS [How to adjust]

a. Turn OFF the power. After setting needle position to the first needle, rotate the main shaft counterclockwise (correct rotation) by using the T-wrench (1). Set main shaft angle to 178째 while checking descending of the needle bar.

b. Loosen the screw (2) to detach the cover (3) (figure b below). c. Loosen the screw (4), and tighten the screw (4) with the presser foot (5) touching fabric (urethane (6) in this example) lightly. Adjust the second needle and after by the same manner (figure c below).

d. After adjusting of one head, check if height of presser foot is almost the same at any needle bar visually (broken line part in the figure d below).

10. Thread breakage detector The rotary slit (1) detects flow of upper thread/under thread. When thread breakage occurs, the machine will stop at once.

It is possible to change sensitivity of thread breakage detection on the operation panel. For details, read “USER’S MANUAL”.

1

11. Middle thread guide with thread take-up spring The thread take-up spring (2) keeps balance of upper thread/ under thread constantly at high-speed rotation, which makes finishing of sewing stable.

Set it to the “basic position” usually. When you move the lever (3) (two or three steps), finishing of sewing will change (perform adjustment according to need).

2 3

2

Basic position

3

12. Upper thread lock (Not applied to some models) Upper thread will be locked (fixed)/released according to operational condition of the machine. Changing this timing will improve finishing of sewing. It is possible to change upper thread lock timing on the operation panel. For details, please read “USER’S MANUAL”.
