DESIGN CONCEPT OVERVIEW

To keep Stevenson high School at the cutting edge of educational delivery with provocative learning environments, Legat Architects has developed three key elements to summarize our conceptual design:

Sports Information and Learning Center

Science of Learning Student Centered

Digital Information and Learning Center

Art of Innovation Technology Driven

Outdoor Information and Learning Center

Language of Nature Environment Immersive

in addition to Library International Interactive Garden Theatre

Existing Information and Learning Centers

The success of both of the existing and proposed ILC’s paired with diverse learning environments informs each element, while each brings a new concept to light:

Connectivity to the existing circulation flow

10

LEGAT ARCHITECTS

Adaptability to change with flexible furniture and mobility

Experience the quality of experience engaging students through the new environments

These elements build upon and enhance the educational archipelago that already exists at Stevenson High School:

Archipelago, ar chi pel a go noun: a group of islands; a sea or stretch of water containing many islands.

The litmus test for any educational environment is how well does this space provoke learning? We believe Legat Architects brings a unique perspective to How Buildings Teach. ADLAI E. STEVENSON HIGH SCHOOL

Sports ILC CONCEPT

Every place and space we experience offers an opportunity to learn. Neuroscience research shows that our brains are wired to receive and process information differently. There are many theories describing varied learning including the research at the Harvard School of Education outlining nine multiple intelligences:

Linguistic (Verbal Learners) Visual (Spatial Learners) Logical (Mathematical Learners) Interpersonal (Social Learners) Musical (Rhythmical Learners) Body Kinesthetic (Physical Learners) Intrapersonal (Individual Learners) Naturalistic (Environmental Learners) Existential (Quizzical Learners)

We all have the capacity to use each intelligence but more often than not, each of us only specialize in two or three of these intelligences. Now let’s imagine how the concept for the Sports Informal Learning Center (SILC) can meet the diverse needs of the SHS student body.

14

Sports ILC ADAPTABILITY

Hall of Fame The hall of fame provides a space to celebrate athletic accomplishments of the past, present, and future of Stevenson Athletics. Accessibility The combination of wheelchair lift and ramps allows easy access to each of the meeting levels for students who are unable to travel up or down stairs. ‘River Delta Circulation’ Like a river delta, circulation carves through the space at the point of least resistance. This allows for fluid and efficient travel during class changes as well as niches for study and Grab-and-Go health snack stands. Teaching Panel To further adapt each space to the specific needs of the students, teaching panels are hung on walls that can be opened to create smaller lecture areas. The wall can have projection screens, digital monitors, marker boards or a combination of all three. Seating Gallery The multi-leveled space allows for the creation of seating galleries along the stairs. These seating areas could serve as social gathering space or an informal lecture hall. Entry / Exit This entry serves the outdoor courtyard and allows easy access to the parking lot and Outdoor ILC during after school events. It can also adapt to serve as a ceremonial passageway to the athletic fields.

Outdoor ILC CONCEPT

Students need an equal dose of natural and digital worlds to balance and remain healthy. Exposure to nature through outdoor classrooms, courtyards, gardens, and interior spaces with views of nature can enhance our reception of new information. Neuroscience research shows that when truly present in nature, we use all our senses at the same time, which is the optimum state of learning. Research has proven outdoor learning: Increases our attention span

Strengthens memory

Reduces stress

Improves mood

Enhances creativity

Albert Einstein famously took a walk in the woods of Princeton every single day to focus his thoughts. What if the experience of changing classes at SHS was like a stroll through the woods?

Outdoor ILC ADAPTABILITY

Building Entry Existing entry into the ‘link’ portion of the building to remain intact. The Outdoor ILC provides a ceremonial entry into the building while remaining centrally located to the entire school. Amphitheater The outdoor amphitheater serves as an outdoor lecture room during school hours. After the school day, the amphitheater can be adapted to host pubic events such as community presentations and movies. Architectural Trees A tree-like structure supporting the canopy evokes the feeling of meandering through a forest. The curved lines and nature reminiscent design offers a relief from the hard lines of the surroundings. Informal Gathering Multi-sized steps serve as addition seating and areas for students to lay as they await their bus. Vegetation is woven into the radial plan to create an ever stronger student connection to nature. Stage The stage contains a large screen for projecting lectures, images, advertisements, movies, etc. It can also be adapted to serve as a stage for small plays or musicals. Canopy To protect students during inclement weather, a canopy follows the meandering path that leads to the other entrances of the building. The numerous tree-like columns mimic the feeling of walking through a forest.

Digital ILC CONCEPT

New digital learning tools allow us to learn anywhere and everywhere and connect with anyone and everyone. Neuroscience research on brain development shows that during adolescence there is a wave of growth and change. Digital learning is providing opportunities to stimulate that growth in a variety of venues:

Individual Learning

One-to-One Learning

Small Group Learning

Large Group Learning

Active learning features small group work stations with individual devices that can input to a shared display for discussion. Then the small group can share to a larger display reporting to the entire class. We can’t predict the future of how curriculum will be delivered in the next five years, let alone 50 years, but we can plan for it by designing spaces that are adaptable to change.

Digital ILC ADAPTABILITY

Genius Bar The new Genius Bar offers students assistance with their computers and tablets as well as provides ‘café’ style work counter for students who prefer quiet spaces to study. Drop off Window The drop-off window directly connects the Genius Bar to the main corridor, making dropping off or checking out equipment easy during lecture times or after hours. Flexible Classrooms Each classroom is equipped with panel walls that fold open to the lounge area and adjacent classrooms allowing the space to adapt to the many needs of teachers and students. All furniture and monitors are on wheels or pivot walls, allowing quick and convenient rearrangements of the room. Outdoor Courtyard A fold-able panel wall allows the student digital lounge to open directly into an outdoor courtyard perfect for small group meetings or a casual stroll between classes. Digital Student Lounge The student lounge offers interpersonal learners a space to work in small or large groups while providing a great meeting space for after school events. Digital Gallery The wider corridor alleviates congestion and doubles as a digital gallery that is constantly rotating content throughout the year to highlight student work, school activities, or to promote the big game.

Education Center Renovations Students in the southeast region of Moraine Valley Community College’s (MVCC) district attended classes at the college’s satellite Blue Island Education Center, and at two area high schools. The college purchased the three-story building that houses the Education Center on the first floor. A 14,000 square foot renovation of the second floor transforms the previous tenant’s space into classrooms, student gathering areas, and offices. The project allows MVCC to expand and consolidate its programs in the southeast area of its district. The organization responds to the structure’s awkward column placement. Circulation wraps a core of three classrooms and a computer lab. Clerestory windows bring daylight into the classrooms. A curved element that cradles the lab offers “touch-down” computers and seating for break-out sessions.

It offers facilities and tools for drafting, A/V production, fashion and interior design, and pre-engineering. Meeting the Budget Despite a Unforeseen Challenge The construction manager’s first estimate was 10% over budget. Legat Architects worked with the district and construction manager to reduce costs by: reducing square footage without sacrificing program; using economical materials; installing rooftop mechanical units; building unfinished spaced. These steps enabled the owner to meet budget.

Sustainable Features

Project Overview As a one-story brown brick building, Wauconda High School looked more like a big middle school. It was the only high school in Lake County without an auditorium, and limited gym space forced athletes to start practice at 5:45 a.m. and finish as late as 8:15 at night. After three additions totaling 118,000 square feet and 58,000 square feet of renovations, the old school is nearly unrecognizable. It is 65% larger, increasing student capacity from 1,066 to 1,600. Features include: • •

With its cantilevered corridor, cascading staircase, and outdoor plaza, the 93,000-square-foot facility creates a new campus entry. Student study spaces and division offices are situated for optimum views of the lake, while corridors and classrooms display the surrounding forest. Study spaces are also situated to continue learning outside the classroom. The three-level center widens as it rises. This tiered strategy reduces the building’s footprint, maintains passages into the campus, and shelters the outdoor plaza. To the south, an outdoor classroom sits between the building and an oak tree grove.
