Fragility is a wearable second skin which explores ideas of assumed boundaries, vulnerability and social cues. Through real world experiments, approximations were determined about which areas of our personal space evoked discomfort when invaded. In implementing these three dimensional zones of discomfort, the process of producing a wearable device to protect the user’s personal space was initiated.

3

Final Outcome

This project sought to preserve the individual’s selected personal space through creating an outfit which was so intricate and delicate that one would not wish to go near for fear of destroying its beauty. Through a computer-aided iterative process, it was determined which characteristics made the laser cut forms appear most fragile. In arranging the size and placement of these forms, a second skin was created which responded to suit the individual’s need for space.

A 1.100 Scale model of a residential project to be constructed in Melbourne’s South Eastern suburban area. Completed throughout a three week internship at the architectural firm ‘Destination Living’ the task was to construct a model to aid clients in understanding spatial qualities, flows and design aesthetics. Utilizing architectural and structural drawings, appropriate elements of the building were selected and dimensioned to accurately represent the completed construction of the project. Throughout the model making process the project architect was consulted, offering insight into the reasoning behind design considerations. Scale Model

Completed as the keystone project of the unit Air Studio at the University of Melbourne the task was to, as a group, design and fabricate an interactive installation using the 3D parametric modelling software Grasshopper. The project was implemented at a site in Abbotsford, Melbourne alongside the Merri

Creek. Primarily Cloudy functions as an isolation pod which through its tentacles collects noise. In this way the surrounding ambience is filter to enhance the user’s experience of nature. After some research into the physics and properties of sound it was determined that a cone was the most

efficient geometry in collecting sound. Consequently it was decided to combine these cone geometries to form an interactive pod suitable for one person. Using Grasshopper and Rhino the resultant geometry was 3D modelled and fabricated from laser cut polypropylene and MDF.

Given the complete structural and architectural drawings for the Collingwood AFL club’s ‘Glasshouse’ the task was to model, to scale, a portion of the building whilst expressing the details of construction techniques and materiality. In constructing the model careful analysis of the drawings and extensive product research was

required to understand exactly how elements of the structure were manufactured, installed and function. The details shown represent all the approaches taken to achieve a fully functioning building in terms of site analysis, structure, waterproofing, fireproofing, roofing, cladding, maintenance and aesthetic detailing.

Goodluck Hope is a major upcoming redevelopment project situated within East London’s docklands area. It amasses to 804 residences, 2000m2 of commercial space and 235m2 of educational space, all of which AModels reproduced at 1.100 scale. The model consisted of two parts, the existing London City Island and the soon to be Goodluck Hope district. All model buildings consisted of an acrylic base with etched detailing and internal LED light cores. The London City island buildings were clad with several layers of light blocked timber veneer whilst the Good Luck Hope buildings facades were of various acid etched metals.

Progress Shots

As an architectural graduate with comprehensive knowledge of CAD I was tasked with interpreting the given architectural CAD drawings and modifying them into files ready for laser cutting, to be subsequently assembled. As the model progressed I became involved in all aspects of the project including construction of the baseboard, light cores, landscaping and buildings onto shipping, packaging and site assembly.

As part of London’s current Crossrail development, Grimshaw Architects were awarded planning permission for a 30,000m2 oversite development in Paddington, West London. AModels was tasked with producing a 1.500 scale model representing this oversite development against the underground Crossrail tube network. Given the architectural plans and an outsourced acrylic display case

I was tasked with producing the components required for the model. These included an 8mm etched acrylic plate and base plate both to match exactly the display case, 1mm colored acrylic road layer components and the above ground frosted acrylic buildings. The completed model pictured above demonstrates AModel’s high standards for accuracy and detailing.

This 1.500 scale model illustrates the planned regeneration for Hackney Wick, a London borough situated alongside the Olympic Park. A colleague and myself constructed an new plug to fit within the timber context base. Over the course of several weeks we cut and clad perspex blocks with a multitude of timber veneers. These along with

pavement pads, vehicle and tree dressings were fitted onto the plug. Measures and adjustments were taken to ensure minimal contrast between plug and base as well as to achieve a high quality finish. The model is to be used for upcoming design review panels and to demonstrate planned developments to those impacted by the project.
