Few artists of the 20th century crossed paths with more notable painters than Jane Peterson. There was Arthur Wesley Dow and Frank DuMond in New York City. Gertrude Stein, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso in Paris. Frank Brangwyn in London. Joaquin Sorolla in Spain. Maurice Prendergast in New England. Louis Comfort Tiffany by train across the United States. Surrounded by famous men, Peterson held her own and today is recognized as one of the authoritative voices of the early 20th century. Primarily known for her harbor scenes and still life’s, Peterson frequently branched out into other genres, as seen here in the equine subject El Dorado

Heading for The Green River Rendezvous
Bronze, cast #1/10
19 inches overall height; 60 ½ inches wide
Signed and dated 1975
Estimate: $6,000 - 9,000
Born and raised on a Wyoming ranch, Truman Bolinger witnessed firsthand what it was like to live a Western lifestyle. Early familiarity with horses, cowboys and cattle sparked a fervent exploration into other areas of the West, including mountain men, Native Americans and Old West outlaws. As he dove deeper into art and history, Bolinger gave up ranching and turned to fine art. He studied first in Denver and then New York City, before finally settling in Arizona, where he relied on authentic stories and realistic representations to guide his visions in bronze. Heading for the Green River Rendezvous is one of his most well-known sculptures.

Johnny Wade Hampton was one of the four founders of the Cowboy Artists of America. While his three co-founders originated from Colorado and the Midwest, Hampton was born in Brooklyn, New York, far away from the ranch life he would eventually paint. Raised on Western movies, the artist was enthralled with Old West subjects, which were abundant in Arizona, where he eventually settled as his art career was expanding. The CA, the famous art organization he helped found, is still active today, 60 years after its creation.

Benton Henderson Clark 1895-1964
Saloon Gang
Oil on canvas

Signed lower left; This piece was commissioned for the January 6, 1940, issue of The Saturday Evening Post. The story it accompanies was serialized across eight issues from late 1939 to early 1940. Several of the original issues, including the issue with this image, are included with this sale.
Estimate: $6,000 - 9,000
Literature: Saturday Evening Post, cover, January 6, 1940
Benton Henderson Clark’s Saloon Gang originally appeared in an edition of the Saturday Evening Post on January 6, 1940. The work, reproduced on nearly a full page in the magazine, accompanied Clarence Budington Kelland’s serialized story Valley of the Sun, which ran across eight consecutive issues in late 1939 and early 1940. The work was captioned in the magazine with a short description: “As he entered the town, herding the two men ahead of him, loungers gathered on the side of the road to stare. Word ran ahead.” Clark, an Ohio-based painter who was living in New York City at the time of this commission, contributed to all eight parts of the Kelland story.

John Walter Scott 1907-1987
Indians Riding Away Oil on canvas mounted to board
24 x 36 inches
Signed and dated 84 lower right
Estimate: $6,000 - 9,000
Born in New Jersey, the son of draftsman and a tapestry mill worker, John Walter Scott was destined to become another lifelong mill worker until the factory began offering free night school. It was this nudge toward design that eventually led him into a successful career in illustration at many of the top pulp magazines: Wild West Weekly, Mystery Tales, Star Detective, Two-Gun Western, Uncanny Tales and many others. Scott later served in World War II, became friends with R.G. Harris and took large corporate and religious commissions. Toward the end of his life, after leaving illustration, he turned his attention to the Old West. Although his Western work represents a small fraction of his career, it speaks to Scott’s strength as a skilled artist and storyteller.

Early years stateside were difficult, especially with a language barrier, but Pino dug into his work and refined his romantic imagery of women and children. The look caught on with book publishers, who saw the artist’s potential as an illustrator. Pino eventually conquered the market, producing illustrations in more than 3,000 publications, including 1,600 book covers. Influenced by John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla, Pino was known for his women, including this woman in a red dress who appears in several key works by the artist.

Born in Chicago and raised in New Orleans, Frank Hoffman was destined to head to Europe for World War I except he had poor eyesight and was rejected for service. Instead, he went West to live with cowboys and Native Americans. He settled in Taos, where he studied with Leon Gaspard and worked in dual worlds—fine art and illustration. He later bought and expanded his Hobby Horse Ranch, where he raised a variety of animals, including burros.

German-born painter William Henry Dethlef Koerner’s first job was as an illustrator for the Chicago Tribune in 1898. The pay was $5 a day. Later, in New York City, the painter enrolled at the Art Students League and was encouraged to seek out Howard Pyle. In 1907, the artist moved to Wilmington, Delaware, to study with Pyle. The move put him into a small group of artists known by the movement they created—the Golden Age of Illustration. Within a decade Koerner was painting the American West for the Saturday Evening Post and other publications. Although he came after Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, Koerner’s works were responsible for introducing a new generation to the Old West.

The daughter of an illustrator father and portraitist mother—and neighbor of John Clymer and Bob Kuhn—Lanford Monroe had quick and easy access to art as she grew up in Connecticut. By the age of 6 she was taking commissions. After her art education in Florida, Monroe traveled around North America and painted watercolors before eventually abandoning the medium to paint in oils. She eventually settled near Taos, New Mexico, where she painted landscapes and scenes of wildlife, and also created horses in bronze.

Like Maynard Dixon before him, Ross Stefan sought out Tucson, Arizona, due to health issues that required warm, dry air. Coming from Wisconsin, Stefan arrived in Southern Arizona in 1953, decades before some of the East Coast illustrators, including Kenneth Riley, Bob Kuhn and Howard Terpning. In Tucson, Stefan developed his “Southwestern impressionism” style, which featured a bright palette, a delicate sense for light and loose brushwork.

Literature:
Beyond the Visible Terrain: The Art of Ed Mell, Donald J. Hagerty, Northland Publishing, Flagstaff, AZ, 1996: p. 107.
After several years working in New York City as an illustrator, Ed Mell returned to his home state to teach on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. It was there he began working on his own work for his eventual return to Phoenix. His paintings at the time were traditional scenes done in a more representational style. But as he refined his work further, the modernism he would soon be known for slowly revealed itself. It wasn’t long before he was doing two distinct styles of landscape painting: more realistic scenes with Mell’s contemporary forms and compositions, and then full-on abstracted paintings with fragmented shapes and only vague hints of realism in the landscape. Eye of the Storm, painted in 1992, is the rare Mell that has elements of each style in it, with a realistic landscape below his famous abstracted cloud forms. Mell did not name the location of the painting—some landscapes were invented by the artist— but it certainly was inspired by Arizona, where the painter was born and lived most of his life. Today, his paintings and sculptures are revered across the Southwest. After his passing in 2024, Mell’s monument Jack Knife on Main Street in Scottsdale became a tribute and memorial to the artist and his contributions to the art world.

Grant Speed 1930-2011
Ridin’ A Rank One
Bronze, cast 24/30
35 inches high (70 inches overall height, with base)
Signed/CA and dated 1993
Estimate: $7,000 - 11,000
Known for pairing larger imagery with miniature scenes all within one bronze, Grant Speed occupies a unique space in the world of Western bronze. His style can be seen here in Ridin’ a Rank One, which features a horse and rider on the top, with smaller pieces that circle the wooden base of the bigger piece. Born in Texas in 1930, Speed had every intention of becoming a working cowboy, which he did for several intermittent years. Sculpture came much later, after he had children and his daughter brought clay home from school. Sculpture hit him like a truck, and he quickly upgraded his clay and got to work. Speed became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America in 1966, a year after the group was founded.

Taos
Many Western painters were inspired by the French Impressionists, though none as fully as Robert Daughters, who used light and technique to create new depictions of the Southwest across half a century. Born in Missouri, Daughters first worked as a fashion painter, a greeting card artist and he owned his own commercial arts studio. After honeymooning in Taos, New Mexico, in 1953, he later moved to Northern New Mexico in 1970. It was in Taos where he brought impressionism to the West after being influenced by the work Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet. Among his favorite subjects were snow scenes, canyons, Rancho de Taos’ St. Francis de Assisi church and, as seen here, aspens.

Estimate: $6,000 - 9,000
During his 20s, an illness-prone James Swinnerton was told to move to a dryer climate to help make his death less agonizing. In Arizona, he waited, but death never came. What he found was the beauty of the Southwest, which he put into his grand landscape paintings. Aside from his oil paintings, Swinnerton is also known as a comic artist whose comic strips, including Little Jimmy and Canyon Kiddies, were common in American households in the early 20th century. Swinnerton died in 1974, nearly seven decades after he was told to prepare for the end.

Robert Rishell 1917-1976
Through the Grove Oil on canvas
30 x 40 inches

Estimate: $3,000 - 5,000
Painter Robert Rishell lived his entire life in Oakland, California, where he remained a prominent figure in the arts community. The son of a former Oakland mayor, Rishell painted official portraits of Ronald Reagan, created murals around the Bay Area and was also one of the founders of the Oakland Museum of California, which he supported throughout his life. His work, much of which showed aspects of the West, often used small figures to show the scale and immensity of the landscape. That quality can be seen here in Through the Grove

James Harwood was born in Utah and was one of the Beehive State’s first star painters. In the 1890s he went to Paris with impressionist Guy Rose and presented work at the Paris Salon. Harwood divided his time between Paris and Salt Lake City, before eventually becoming a teacher in Utah. It was during this time that his work shifted several times as he explored tonalism and impressionism, and later pointillism. He also took a position as the head of the art department at the University of Utah, where he trained new generations of painters.
